Number of Applicants?

Someone posted a comment that claims the city received 9,639 applications for the upcoming police test next week. We can't find the article at the moment but WBBM had something about it, too.

That's a few more than we thought would apply and way less than the heydays of the 1980's and 1990's when 30,000 was a regular occurrence. And "applications" doesn't translate into "test takers" by any means.

We're short well over 2,000 and Shortshanks says the city will hire 200 next year. Wow.

I wish there were no need for police and we lived in a utopia. I wish all those who applied had better job prospects. I wish the police department was different and we were respected. Well I wish all who are about to come on the beat. This is a bad time to be the police as fair as work goes. But its still a job where you can feed your family. Good luck to all the test takers.

"Drop the college. I would rather work with a street smart kid than a book smart kid any day."

Even as a recent college graduate I would have completely agreed with your statement 8 months ago, but after getting a good job and having employees with no education and some with education under me, I realize that an education is important. People who have finished school seem to be years ahead of the ones who do not. They are able to act individually without having their hand held for every single task. I'm not saying this is 100% true with everyone but in the 8 months as a manager, I haven't seen otherwise. Just because you have college does not mean you cant be street smart. You act like kids from Harvard are applying who have had everything fed to them with a silver spoon. College has been preached to us from birth how important it is as I'm sure those officers who are parents do to their own children. So if I were in your position I would want someone with both an education and street smarts out there on the streets with me.

---------------------------------

What's to guarantee that you will get someone with "street smarts" just because they have no college. Might just get a moron who does not know the streets either.

While I agree that "street smarts" can be more important that "paper smarts" - I don't think we need anymore "dumb as a box of rocks" idiots who have to be carried by the rest of us because that are too stupid to form a sentence or know the English language. I heard a few on the radio and I thought I was in a third world country and needed a translator.

Dump the college but put in "real" testing that will weed out the morons yet keep those who at least can pass a High School test... a HS diploma these days does not mean anything at most of the local public schools!

I have a question that has been bugging me for a while, and not being a lawyer, thank God, has me perplexed and a little worried. M3 claims to be a "Sworn Police Officer." He has a badge, carries a gun, has responded to calls and even made arrests. Supposedly he got his State Certification by attending a State Certified Academy on the weekends and on line classes.

So, if I want to be the police in Chicago, why do I have to go through the Academy? There is a president set that YOU CAN BE A CHICAGO POLICE OFFICER without ever attending or graduating from the Chicago Police Academy. Can officers from other Departments who have a state certification be made a CPD officer with the wave of a Politicians Clout Stick? If so, what are the criteria?

What about recruits who didn't make it through the academy or who are in now who fail? Can they take a state certification test somewhere then sue to get on the CPD?

If M3 is the Police, are their all kinds of law suits out there just waiting to be filed once someone catches on? And, if M3 isn't the police do any people he assisted in arresting have a lawsuit against the city? It seems to me their got be a wheel barrow full of shit heading toward the Department if some smart lawyer or newspaper person ever catches on. Of course smart lawyers and newspaper reporters is pretty much and oxymoron.

Last I herd from Personel & the Academy, we loose about 1/3 of the applicants at every testing phase.

9000 get the applications,
6300 take the test,
4500 drug testing
3200 take the physcial
2400 move to the psyc test...

Sad numbers... this is whats going to replace us. Even in a fucked up economy, people dont want this job, or dont want to put up with the bullshit we do every day.

Get off the college nonsense. Not all college graduates are idiots nor are they geniuses. Having the degree just shows that they finished something they started. Same thing with being a military veteran although there isn't much chance of quitting and still coming out with an Honorable Discharge. I did both but so have many, many others on this job. I wish I had a dollar for every time someone griped about "college kids got no common sense." It usually comes out of the mouth of someone who also lacks common sense and who overestimates their own level of "street smarts."

Chicago Prepares for Single Highest Police Officer Exam in 10 years
.by Chicago Police Department on Friday, December 3, 2010 at 9:07pm.Nearly 9,700 Individuals Invited to Take the Exam December 11, 2010

The City of Chicago today reported that 9,639 individuals are scheduled to take the Police Officer Examination on Saturday, December 11, 2010 at McCormick Place, reaching a record number of applicants in just five weeks time since the Chicago Police Department made the announcement in late October.

The administration of the 2010 police officer examination represents the largest number of applicants who will sit for a police officer examination in the last 10 years. The 9,639 individuals who successfully completed the online application and paid the required fee have been notified to report for the exam.

"I am encouraged by the number of applicants for this exam. There is no greater profession than one in public service. I applaud the men and women who have taken this first step toward a noble and fulfilling career," said Police Superintendent Jody P. Weis.

A total of 13 examinations for the Police Officer position have been given since March 1999. The second highest number of applicants sitting in for one written examination occurred in February 2006 with a total of 4,061 individuals seeking to become Chicago police officers. That was one of four separate exams offered with a total number of 8,859 applicants taking the exam that year.

36,000 people took the police tests in August and October of 1985.

Two tests were given because an age cutoff to apply of 35 was given at first and there were lawsuits that the city lost.

This was no record by a long shot.

Every time you or posters here talk about how we're down thousands, City Hall just laughs at how stupid we are. Stop it already. We'll never have any progress if we don't discuss reality.

I agree with Anonymous.
Drop the college requirement for
applicants, teach them the CPD Rule
Book and how to shoot.
Let them shoot to kill because then
the City and the offenders next-of
kin can't come back later to sue
them or bite them in the behind.
Hire upper and lower management that know how to effectively run
the CPD and will back the troops.
The offenders no longer fear the
Police because there is nothing to
deter them, no death penalty, very
little, if any jail time, and a whole posse of do-gooders willing
to go to bat for them and justify their dirty deeds. The populace in
certain sections of the City hate
the Police and don't care when an
officer gets killed or wounded.
But when the shoe is on the other
foot who do they call, The Chicago
Police Department to come to their
rescue. And what's equally disheartening is that the higher-ups, from the Mayor, the Superintendent on down to some of the
local commanders screw-over the
officers under their command and
then expect them to go out on the
streets and give 99 percent.
You can't have it both ways.
You can't tell the officers on the
street to fight crime and if necessary, shoot and kill offenders
and when the " I'm not going to change" crowd runs to the City and
complains, you can't let them hit
the "lottery" and then punish the
officer and throw him under the bus. And while you're at it spend some of that TIF slush money and
buy some decent, late model vehicles for them to patrol with.

some college kids are street smart, most afraid to make a decision without a supervisor

you don't need a supervisor to protect yourself (kick ass) when you are theatened

no boss ever gave approval to kick ass
we didn't abuse citizens in the
70's and 80's , we protected ourselves from being battery victims , nothing wrong with that.

seems like police today are afraid to protect themselves , police officers were being sued then and always will be , protect yourself
someone threatens you , use your nightstick , asp or spray

It's "too" dumb, brainiac. I don't know what it is about college kids but I've trained a few and I trained a few hs grads who came from labor jobs or also attained 60hrs. while working. The ones w/4 yr. degrees were the worst...no common sense, pussies and acted like their shit didn't stink. Those assholes made me not want to be an FTO.

That being said, I got on in a south burb at 21 w/only a hs diploma, decided I wanted to get on CPD, picked up my 60 hrs, and now here I am...an invaluable 7 years on the street and a very useless 60 college hours. I learned to write in hs cuz I'm not a retard. A police test should include basic math/reading comp./grammar and a writing sample. Too bad CPD doesn't do lateral hiring, but cop or not, asking for a writing sample is an excellent measure of mental aptitude, I know this from personal experience.

If anyone is wondering why the turnout is so low compared to years past, it's not the economy, nor the college requirement. The online application with the city takes about 2-3 hours if you know what you are doing with some pretty good computer tech skills.

1. Create a City Jobs Profile - Fairly easy and straight forward if you signed up and used email before.
2. Login with the profile and start the application. - Easy
3. Fill in the usual application stuff same as a paper form.
4. Upload your college transcripts or DD214.
If your college is advanced, they may email you a pdf. Mine did, but my pdf was too large. City only accepts 512kb or less. Official PDFs have security features, which exceed the file size.
So you print out the transcripts and then scan them in yourself. I don't know too many standard home PCs with scanners. Even fewer that will scan into a PDF format.
This step alone probably stopped a good number of "just trying out" people.
4. Answer all the questions that yes, you did upload your transcripts and your driver's license.
Crap they want a scan of your driver's license? Back to Kinko's or a buddy's place with a scanner.
5. Submit, then wait for an email.
6. Pay your $30 via CC and then you are finally applied.

It's much different from the days when anyone could walk in, pick up a paper application, write it in, and submit it.

I consider myself extremely technical, and it took me 4 hours to start to finish cause of the funky file size limits.

There are probably some good candidates that didn't want to put up with the changing requirements (first no under 25, then ok, but you can't get hired until 25), the complicated city HR system with outdated file size limitations, and then having to pay for the exam on top of it.

refering to an earlier comment, i wnt to know how an ofc from another deprtment with a state cert just walks onto CPD? i took the test in 06 and it was determined by some POS investigator that i wasnt cpd material becuase i wrecked a squad and missed a court date......their jutifiction was that i would have been disciplined by cpd as well......good luck with appeals b/c they dont do shit, so im back to square 1 after 7 yrs of suburban work. also, being that i have been a life long city resident and from a family of POs, how does one claim the city is only down 1k officers when you lose huge numbers to retirement every month and only hire two classes of 40-somthing to replace them? seems to me like some brass felt the need to voice their bs opinion. and however i dont agree that college makes better cops becuase i have schooling and learned more from street sense than school, do you vets with 15 yrs on the job want to be partnered up with a 21y/o who spent the last 4 yrs of his life drinking all week? i think its a maturity thing.....and 200 hires wont cover the retirees that cpd has lost in the last 3 months. maybe im jut rambling, but whether it be a book smart or a street mart, cpd needs bodies. and i dont know why they wouldnt look at ppl who hve been the police already? accelerated training? if your already an ofc you dont take another certification. you learn cpd ordinances and ways etc.....

M3 is considered "police" by data warehouse standards only. Yes, he is went to some suburban academy and I assume he took and passed the state exam. However, he is not part of the rank and file. The city did make a booboo by allowing this. The other civilians that are considered "police" was because of their fed background. Like it or not, that could stand a debate. But M3's situation has great potential to explode, implode, etc. Once he is gone from that spot, he will not resume his duties in the beat car, he is gone. period. I want our timekeeper to go to a weekend academy, take the state test, and tell the department they will start coming to work with a gun. let's see how that would work. i want to start a pool to convince her to do it!
