Kick the Can Down the Road

  • The surprise infusion of more federal money ended a stalemate on O'Hare International Airport expansion, clearing the way for Mayor Richard Daley to depart office with a partial victory and for Mayor-elect Rahm Emanuel to avoid a tricky issue for a few years.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood brokered the deal announced Monday. The city gets one new runway instead of completing the entire project. The major airlines who sued to delay the work don't have as big a financial commitment.

The federal government, already in for a record $1 billion, will heap another $155 million to protect its investment at O'Hare and maintain the competitiveness of an airfield that Daley's father transformed into an international economic powerhouse at the dawn of the Jet Age.
Shortshanks gets to walk away a winner again thanks to federal money and a shaky bond issue backed by a shrinking tax base and an industry that continues to bleed red ink daily. Way to go!

This is just one fine example why our country is in big financial trouble. We spend more than we earn and continue to think we can do that forever. While foreigners continue to buy our bonds to finance such nonsense. One day no one will buy our bonds and literally the rug will be pulled right out underneath Uncle Sam and that is when we will all wonder what the hell happened?

"surprise infusion"?

Interpretation: "We Tribune reporters are shocked, SHOCKED, that the politicians would close yet another deal to underwrite crony capitalism in Chicagoland while also adding to the burden of debt. After all, the deal will be good for working families, and why worry that the inflation caused by the additional federal debt will be made worse if the FRS reduces reserve requirements?"

Speaking of crony capitalism: What do you call it when governments own producers' goods like an airport, without which many businesses, like Jeff Smisek's United, wouldn't even be viable?

(Psst: 'cryptocommunism'.)

Meanwhile, over at a securities and investment banking firm with offices in Chicago, Boca Raton and London, a caring community leader and his quislings are rubbing their hands with glee at the thought of a precedent renewed and soon to be invoked on behalf of the friendly, confining infrastructure owned by the Wrigleyville Outfit.

The gameplan at Irving and York is to eliminate the RR crossing by building a train bridge over Irving Park Rd. Airport expansion or not, that's something that's been needed there for years. It's not unusual to have to wait 20mins on a n/bound train only to be immediately followed by a 15 minute delay for a s/bound train.

I go that way all the time to buy my gas in Bensenville (DuPage County is at least 15 cents less per gallon), so I'm always waiting on the trains. It will be nice when completed.

I am amused that the Media is just now picking up on the Dayton story. The story is about how dumbed down they have had to make the Police test in order for minorities to score well enough to get hired.

Have they missed the last twenty five years? This is epidemic in every facet of service, police fire, doctors and the rest.

Now, this may be fine in business. You get an incompetent employee, you fire him of put him in a position where he can't do any harm. When they carry a gun or have your beating heart in their hand, you probably want someone that can pass a test.

2011 and the America begins to wake from it's slumber? Don't get me wrong, I'd like to buy the world a coke too, but where do you draw the line?

Actually, the bond issue doesn't rely on our tax base. It's purely funded by O'Hare revenues. The City's taxpayers are not actually on the hook. The airlines (and by extension, O'Hare passengers) are the ones on the hook, which is why they were suing.

The conflict in his statements will lead you to the inescapable conclusion on the incident in Englewood when he cut and ran from a nearby murder that just occurred only 45 seconds away, abandoning police officers going into harm's way. The murder remains unsolved, the unknown shooter last seen fleeing northbound (towards J-Fled) on foot.

Well, the rumors are true. MSF is not the only unit being downsized. TRU has been informed it must give up 50 officers and several squad cars by May 1st. They will be sent to Southside districts to help with manpower shortages. This is coming straight from the Big Bosses at HQ. TRU does not have the 300 plus officers as MSF, so a smaller number was chosen. The officers will be informed asap.

This started as of Jan 01, 2011 for Sergeants, Lieutenants and Captains, per contract.

Starts 2012 for those under FOP.

Anything between .04 and .079 results in being sent home for the day, and must appear before the start of next tour of duty and blow .000 . Pretty sure it is also a CR at this level. Only one Sergeant from a Unit caught so far.

If you stayed out until 0400, then show up at work at 0900, you are an idiot. The Frat boy days are over by the time you make sergeant, and I don't want an alleged "superior" who is impaired any where around me!!!

If you had a few beers with the boys and had to work early, it shouldn't be an issue. If you are still blowing over .04 hours after the bars closed, YOU HAVE A PROBLEM. Hit the program or take your 30 with a smile and a thank you.

It cost almost 700 million dollars of Da Mayos money to displace these citizens. His playground within the city limits was not enough and he decided to play in our neighbors playground.
