Vanecko Case Gets Legs
It’s been two weeks now since the Chicago Police Department concluded Mayor Daley’s nephew threw the punch that led to David Koschman’s death but closed its recently reopened investigation without seeking criminal charges.
The case is closed. And the police aren’t talking. But many questions are still unanswered.
The police have said only this: No one received special treatment.
Which no one we've met believes for even a moment. Novak and Fusco of "Hired Truck" fame have their teeth in this one and the only thing keeping it from a federal grand jury is pressure from Washington DC.

The only question is how long can Vanecko be protected by the powers that be? Maybe if it gets national media attention something will be done.
At the very least, Vanecko should easily be found liable for Koschmann's death in a civil suit.
Don't expect any charges of anything substantial to stick on this case; it's a dog case, even if it does involve a member of the Daley slime/crime family.
"David Koschman of Mount Prospect..."
The city is a very dangerous place for suburbanites.
Silience from the media? As my 11 year old Daughter says....."cricket cricket"
Hired truck fame. They didn't do to good of a job on that story. They never figured out who hired the gang banger that ran the program. And all the companies that were mentioned in the article are still used by the city on a regular basis. So what good did it do.
Nor should it go away. They should not be able to kill their subjects after fleecing them. This is just out of control.
Aren't cops supposed to be the out of control bar brawlers? Oh, that's right. It never happened that way. Just smoke and mirrors for the media to play into while Shortshanks and his family plunder and murder in the city.
I read the article. All very valid questions. It's a shame reporters have to ask them.
Can't the mother request the government to investigate since it's obvious that it was hushed up on the local level?
---not a cop
The Daley family M.O. is to just keep quiet during the storm. Eventually the storm passes, and life in Daleyland goes on as usual. Ignore it, and it'll go away, in other words.
A few more questions that an eager investigator may want to ask are?
What are the criteria set by the FBI to have a case closed “exceptionally”? (JFeds old employer and an investigative body that JFed has shown some pull with in his tenure as CPD superintendent.) (i.e. Bill Cozzi)
One of the criteria is the case must have a "known" offender, and that appears to be Vanecko AND some sort of extenuating circumstances as to why the offender is not being charged, usually because he is DEAD. Last I checked, Venecko is not dead...yet.
The FBI also needs to APPROVE all cases that are closed “exceptionally”. (This makes me wonder if JFeds near $1 million salary over 3 years was not more like a $1 million bribe to get in with the FBI to get a bad situation to disappear.)
This case is as dirty as they get and I would just love for John Kass or Ben Javorsky to pick up on it and apply pressure to the right people.
When the civil suit is filed the truth will come out, for good or bad. Everyone involved in the case will have to face a deposition, from the investigting detectives to the witnesses. I have a feeling that the CPD will face some flak over this, justified or not, for conducting a very short investigation, if you listen to the media.
I have never heard, nor do I believe, that any federal agency approves a case closed " exceptionally". Can you site a source for this? I think this is just at CPD catagory, nothing more.
How can the police have no comment on a murder investigation that has been closed?
These half ass bosses are destroying any integrity left in this department. How hard is it to read the reports and explain that Darren OBrien rejected charges?
This more than anything shows the quality of our exempt ranks. It's a total disgrace.

I never read anything more incorrect than the above post. This writer has no idea how a murder case is charged or how it is cleared exceptionally (either cleared closed or cleared open).
This was very likely written by the dumbest person on the CPD. We are all now a little dumber for having read it.
Sorry, this case is not going anywhere. Marin in her ST/channel 5 gig and Novak and Fusco are the only ones on this. The other media outlets in town have not uttered a word. Kass? unless he can work Obama into the story he will have nothing to say
Fitzgerald, it's time to really fight corruption instead of picking on old retired coppers and cops who struck back after being spat on.
Do the right thing and take the Vanecko case on. Dets involved don't let yourselves get thrown under the bus.document when you were leaned on and by who.
We all know if it was a off duty copper he woulda been charged already
if this was a police officer who threw the punch that caused a death what would have happened???
this just stinks.....
hopefully a wrongful death or civil rights lawsuit will provide some answers

Obama "owns" the national media. If any of them even think about acting independently or critically, he simply has Axelrod call the head of the news division and threaten to restict White House access...which only works, oh, 100% of the time.
So, when that is viewed alongside this equation (Obama > Holder > Fitzgerald), this story will soon fade.
Makes you proud to live in the land of the free and the brave, doesn't it?

Question To The Troops;
Why Did This Case Lay Dormant Under The Previous Administration ?
When the civil suit is filed the truth will come out, for good or bad. Everyone involved in the case will have to face a deposition, from the investigting detectives to the witnesses. Ahhh, the civil suit. Where has that been. Maybe having trouble getting a lawyer to take the case. What, no Flint Taylor, no Loevy & Loevy.
As far as a criminal case, go ahead, you arrest him with the existing EVIDENCE. I want to read your probable cause.
I hate the media. Fusco is the exception. I know him personally, he is very intelligent and very ethical. He gave his dying friend part of his liver, unfortunately Mark didn't make it.
To the few who drank the kool-aid and lended a hand to the Daley criminal enterprise. Keeping their out of control brats out of the spotlight. Was it worth it, to give up your integrity so his nephew could escape a proper investigation.
This case is done.
By most accounts there is not really a case, other than the guy being related to Daley.
He probably got away with manslaughter. It happens now and then.
Maybe a civil suit will get some money out of the Daley crime family if there is a competent lawyer willing to risk being found in the river who will take the case.
OTOH, I would not be surprised if some of the people involved in the investigation got some time off. Some very irregular things went on.
I agree (for once) with the reporters questions...this is a b.s. cover-up 100%. And I love Det's saying it was all legit...the ASA didnt approve..Bullshit...they didnt WANT to approve!! AND the investigation was screwed up from the beinning...on purpose no doubt.Called in 2 weeks after for a line-up after changing his appearance? Yeah ok Detective...great job. On this one EVERYONE is to blame...Sad thing is no one would give a flying fuck about this kid if the offender wasnt who he was.
Perhaps they will charge him federally. With obama i doubt it though.
The family had a two year statute of limitation to file a wrongful death civil suit and, for whatever reason, chose not to.
Here's another question the media may want to ask. WHY weren't the original detectives assigned in A/3 given the case to close? Not all of them have retired two are still working there. WHY give it to a detective that was not assigned to A/3 and never on the paper? Does someone not trust that these two detectives in A/3 are competent enough to handle the closer? Fresh eyes you say well what about the detectives filling the spots in the cold case squad? WHY weren't they assigned to re-open and re-investigate this case? Hmmmmmmmmm
When the civil suit is filed the truth will come out, for good or bad. Everyone involved in the case will have to face a deposition, from the investigting detectives to the witnesses. I have a feeling that the CPD will face some flak over this, justified or not, for conducting a very short investigation, if you listen to the media.
There will be no civil suit. The mother has no interest in filing one. And it is long past the date to file one anyway. this is why this has come out now and not sooner. Basically there is nothing anyone can do and this guy got away with murder. and stealing from our pensions.
Hey I feel bad for the family, but since when does this department release homicide reports???
These reports are exempt from FOIA requests per stattute as well as our own department policy.....
I hope Rory O'Brien had the authorization to release the shit, what is the sense of blocking out his PC # on the bottom of the report in the Scum-Times but keeping his name on the report?
This fucking department is doomed..........
Maybe someone should tell the ASS CLOWNS running this department that when you put out an addendum to a department order you should make sure it would work.....
So now Interim Supt Hilliard issues the order nobody wanted to sign theirname to on Police involved shootings where the narrative will read.....
"See Detective Division supplemental report"
Does anyone other than detectives and the ASA'S see whats wrong with this..... How do you now have the Preliminary investigator's document what they saw upon their arrival?????
So we just gave all these dumb ass private attorney's REASONABLE DOUBT.
Well, you'll say you just testify toit, andon cross examination well officerif it was that important why didn't you document it!!!!
The civil suits are going to be even worse, again more conspiracies.......
GET REAL.......The fucking continues
Can't the FBI get involved under the concept of Vilation of Civil Rights?
I've heard of them doing just that in similar situations.
WOW the Scum-times is figuring that Daley is fair game now that he is set to leave office. WOW growing testosterone producing organs! Guess better late than never.
Wonder who was the Commander of the "D" Unit who made sure this crime never saw the inside of a court room? The same guy who was thanked with promotions and a job at the Chicago Department of Tony... Little Tommy Burns. How does this guy sleep at night?
It is and always was a BS case. It's going nowhere.
Give up on it already.
One criteria for exceptionally closing this case would be that the offender is identified.
There are several criteria to be met, I worked homicide as well as many other units and the criteria is spelled out on paper for the detective division. I had to refer to this order several times and the number one was to identify the offender, other wise the others don't matter.
If the offender was identified he would have been charged in any other case like this.
If Venecko's case does get legs, based upon past performance, he'll use them to... "WALK!"
BUT...Cozzi can go to jail for a punch and Burge can go to jail for lying on a civil deposition.
Dumbo-Ears protects the shortshanks crime family
AGAIN !!!!!!

It is astounding how much inaccurate information is in this post. What an idiot.
this whole thing was turned over to the feds by a copper who worked that night and knew it would come out as a obstruction of justice under color of law and didnt want to be caught in the middle when it came time to bite him in the butt, his union rep told him to go ahead with it.copper kept all records and case reports concerning the death of the kid and all the bosses involved at the scene that nite.
"The family had a two year statute of limitation to file a wrongful death civil suit and, for whatever reason, chose not to."
Koschman's mother lost her husband earlier, and now her only child. She just wants justice; Daley family money is filth, anyway.
Maybe we could call that mobster snitch frank calabrese and break some legs of that punk KILLER VANECKO! Stole from our pension funds, now KILLS a young kid and not in prison. The criminal daley empire rolls on!
TO: I agree (for once) with the reporter . . . . .
-You, my friend, know not of what you speak.
You guys aren't going to believe this but I was flagged down yesterday by a witness to this incident that they just saw Daleys nephew a block away and that he's killed their friend a few years back.
I toured the area but could not locate Vanecko.
I hope I see him because I will detain him, call the Detectives and have a line up done because the witnesses and victims family want to pursue the matter. I'm sure the Det's (especially their bosses )will call the States Attorney quickly so we can charge Daley's nephew with murder...Right?
I'm sure the States Attorney will take this seriously, becuase Alvarez ran on a anti police platform, so now here chance is here again.
If this was a homicide in a High Crime Area it would have be pursued and charges filed. How come not in these circumstances.
But I bet Vanecko is probably on Vacation with Daley's kid in a non extraditeable country..
Slight correction....
We all know if it was a nonclouted off duty copper he woulda been charged already.
3/15/2011 10:30:00 AM...
"Ahh, the civil suit..."
SHEEEEIIIIT!
You can bet a fat woman if it were a copper that threw the punch in question, flint taylor, loevy & loevy and all the rest of these low class whores would be all up in that ass like cheap tissue!
The word is already out... NO LAWYER IN THE CHICAGO METRO AREA IN THEIR RIGHT MIND IS GOING TO TAKE THIS CASE!!!
The motion to fix is in...
We'll lay good money that an "ambassador" from Daley Inc. via multiple layers of "intermediaries" has already sent out feelers to momma to try to make this "go away" quietly or they're expending much time and capitol trying to dirty the victim up so as to set the table for possible civil litigation if momma tells them to run away and piss-off.
Again... If a copper were involved, their feet wouldn't even hit the bottom steps en route to being summarily stripped, charged, jailed with no bond and everybody saying "YOYO and it sure sucks to be you don't it?"
The Daleys are drunk on power and influence in addition to their native traits of being cowardly, vicious, vindictive, spiteful and cruel.
Horrible that this young man needlessly lost his life.
So very interesting that the public is being shown the REAL face, character and doings of the Daley family.
Irony that The Police have known this about these people for years. Sounding the alarm was dismissed as random carping by disgruntled, out of control employees being disciplined and "whipped into line" and not liking it.
It sure as hell isn't The Police who are out of control here...
Lets see local media run these rotten muthafuckahs down like they've run coppers down with relentless updates and breathless, lip smacking and over heated word play.
It would do our outraged and wounded hearts quite some good to see a Daley most deserving being perp walked into 26 & Cal or the MCC in front of bright TV lights with a look on his face that says to the world, O_o "I think I just shit on myself."
Why not? It's good enough for a coppers to endure so it's good enough for a Daley to endure.
What's good for the goose...
Viva Hate.
This is not going to turn out well for Felony Review; it's going to be much worse for 630.
Pt. II
All this harping about "why didn't the Police do anything" is for the most part a bullshit distractor designed to middle and dirty up CPD in this madness.
We cannot IMAGINE any detective in their right mind, given the current climate, not wanting to slap the cuffs on Vanecko. More incentive just BECAUSE HE IS a blood member of the Daley Inc. crime family.
This literally begins and ends at the doorstep of the CCSAO and you can be sure Anita Alvarez as a LOYAL associate member of Daley Inc. was given her marching orders early on.
The failure/refusal to approve charges is Alvarez'a ugly baby and shortshanks is the father... No paternity test needed for this one.
This whole damn thing has been intentionally compromised beyond salvaging.
There will be absolutely no justice for the still grieving family, sorry to say...
This is beyond the power of the Police to address and correct. The Police apparently did what they were supposed to do. Work this investigation to it's conclusion; which is identifying the offender and presenting it to CCSAO for approval of charges, seeing as how moving beforehand would expose those involved to false arrest litigation which WILL be made to hurt REALLY BAD by orders of City Hall.
No rose colored glasses here!
Daley Inc... Some real rotten sons o' bitches.
Dare I think Obstruction of Justice too? Nah, no chance. Just another example of the Daley family getting away with murder. Literally.
Reading this shit is funny, coverup, conspiracy theory, give me a break. The media presses your buttons and you all jump. you should post this everyday until the guy gets charged. karma is a bitch. and since everyone looks at the blog, that will be the first thing they see. the scum name vanecko.
So how does an Area 5 double merit sergeants name appear in the supervisor approval box for an Area 3 incident? Did merit lieutenant, er, Chief of Detectives TB go "shopping" for someone who supervisors easily influenced to do the wrong thing-upon command-since he's beholden to a thoroughly corrupted system for his own advancement? And where is the Skull? Did he get a phone call as well? Lets see if uber Mic' Fitzgerald will move as swiftly to investigate this cover-up as quickly as he moved to sandbag Cozzi. This one has Chicago written all over it. And with Bill Daley in the White House he'll make sure Eric Holder never allow any federal investgation of this crime. Let's hope the press remebers this one as long as the victims mother does.
-You, my friend, know not of what you speak.

Thanks for posting Detective...Ya fucked this one up,now go back to work
There is time to file a law suit still. Even though this occured seven years ago, the identity of the offender was not discovered until now. The clock starts ticking now, and regardless believe me when I tell you that you can find a judge that will allow a law suit after the time expires anyway. Hard to believe in Crook County I know.
Move along already? From somebody who has a clue? Are you kidding me? If any of the sun-times story is correct, someone in the police department has egg on their face. It seems, on it surface, to be a very shoddy investigation into a very serious matter. It does not matter how many murder trials someone has testified in, this investigations just does not look right. I am not saying cover-up, but shoddy .It might not go anywhere, but just does not look right for the CPD.
"There will be absolutely no justice for the still grieving family, sorry to say..."
But there could be if they chose to go outside normal channels, what a Op of a lifetime that would be...
It would be interesting to know which of the police officers (beat offcer, his sargent, His Lt. The initial investigators, their Sgt's Lt's and Violent Crimes Commander initially involved in this case were promoted to the next higest rank after the initial investigation in 2004 was closed out.
To all the posters who refer to a civil suit I believe the statute of limitations on that has long passed. Don't get me wrong I'd love to see Vanecko dragged through a civil suit but I don't think it's possible at this point.
I did read the UCR handbook and the definition of " exceptionally cleared" is in this handbook. However, that does not state that the feds approve all cases that are in this catagory. They take the word of the reporting agency and all agencies do not have to report to them. The CPD reports to the state of illinois who reports to the feds. There is no " approval" per se. The city can, and does enter what it wants to enter and there is no follow-up by the feds to see if entries are correct.

Oh yeah? Then if there's nothing here I guess there should be no civil trial either. The Daley clan can just kill people now.
What would have happened if that was a cop who threw the punch?
No go get your fucking shine box. Daley's shoes need some work.

Great post. Made me laugh
You state Obama owns the media? This happened back in 04 along with the truck driver scandel and several other world famous criminal events from Chicago. How does Obama figure in this one?
I don't believe it was a coverup by the police. This was an order from Mayor Daley: you saw nothing, you heard nothing, and you'll do nothing. Why would a cop risk his life to get a Daley family member? I understand.
