Where's Our Bonus?

  • Mayor-elect Rahm Emanuel already has proposed creating a local version of the federal “Race to the Top” fund to reward the best teachers and schools. He also has suggested five-year performance contracts for every Chicago Public School.

Now, he’s dangling a cash carrot in front of school bosses.

In an interview with the Chicago Sun-Times, Emanuel proposed cash incentives to reward the best-performing principals.

Performing at what? Juggling? Grade inflation? Cooking the books? The minute cash gets offered, bad things happen. Imagine giving police commanders bonuses for keeping crime under certain levels. Or index numbers above certain levels. What do you think is going to happen?

Commanders have zero to do with the actual results of keeping crime in check - they're at meetings, not out there arresting people. Principals have about the same effect on educating children - it's the teachers (most of them at least) that educate, not the bureaucrat.

An overblown, overpaid travesty like JPWeis would happen.

Oh, wait. It already has. And then, someday, the REAL numbers surface.

I'm sure 003 could use another Lt., even one as piss poor as RayRay. Heck, he might even learn how to be a boss while he's out there.

Even if we did get a bonus when crime went down, it'd be run just like everything else; the clouted would get the cash. The rest of us, not so much.

On tonight's 60 Minutes, teachers in a NYC charter school were paid $125,000 per year but were at will employees. These teachers were assumed to be the best of best teachers in the nation. Scores on standardized NY State math and reading tests under these teachers were under those of similar schools. The students of these well paid teachers came from poor hispanic families. No mention of family involvement (parents reading to their kids) was made in the program.

Throwing money at the problem is not going to help unless parents, teachers, and principals are going to work together. Don't expect this to work in Chicago either.

Rahm-meister is going to be a one term mayor. He is looking to move to on to bigger and better things such as the US Senate and then the eventual Presidential run.

To make this all happen, Rahm needs some big numbers highlighting his mayoral achievements on improving education, reducing crime and pension costs. Of course the reduction in crime and improved education will be accomplished through smoke and mirrors.

Education has been Daley's focus for the past 20 years. The result of Daley oversight has lead to very little if no improvement. Case in point, 80% of students enrolling in City Colleges of Chicago, who are almost all CPS graduates, need some form of developmental education. Some of these CPS graduates can barely read. It was not uncommon that many graduating high school students were reading at the 7th grade or lower level. How is a school principal going to improve these numbers? Any improvement of student learning will depend on what support these kids are getting at home. The City and State cannot provide this support. It must come the parents.

SCC, Rahm knows best! Just like the recent news report stating former Dep. Supt. Ramsey is a front runner to be our new Supt.

Rahmmie, please give me faith that you can find someone that has at least LIVED in Chicago for the past decade. Ramsey has not ben in Chicago since 1998. Thirteen years!

Wait. Rahmmie likes "Chicagoans" who spend years and time away from "home". Just like himself.

Ramsey has just amount of a clue about Chicago's issues as did Weis. Maybe less because Ramsey thinks he knows.

Been a decade. Things gave changed. And remember why he was not chosen back then. Has he changed his ways?

OFF TOPIC...BUT VERY IMPORTANT!

Early Voting begins today in 14 wards for Aldermanic runoff elections.

It’s time to vote again in Chicago and our chance.

Early voting at 17 sites in the city starts today to decide runoff races for aldermen in 14 wards.

The April 5 runoffs are for wards in which no candidate got more than 50 percent of the vote last month. The top two vote-getters then advanced to the runoff.

Rahm and the 50-member City Council will be sworn into office on May 16.

Turnout is expected to be low and is between a Daley appointed incumbent and an independent candidate.

HERE'S OUR CHANCE to vote out some of those Daley stooges ad maybe get some people in who will fight against all the new Rahm Taxes.

As much as I hate to say it eugenics may be necessary. If they can't make it out of eighth grade and read and write at grade level, sterilize them (Margaret Sanger's idea).

If they show a tendancy towards violence, lobotomize them.

Why reward the principals ?
They are now at the beck and call
of the Local School Councils who
really run the schools.
The principal is just a figurehead
and most of them don't have a clue
as to how to run a school and
effectively deal with children,
parents, and bureaucrats.
And by the way, where is the money
coming form to reward them ?
The Chicago Board of Education
claims they are broke and bearly
has enough for regular operations.
Remember last year when they had
to furlough teachers to save money?

Mayor Daley didn't want good schools. He just wanted to control the money. Siphoning-off the
property tax money for TIF's and
forcing the Board of Ed to raise
property taxes to the max to run
the system and Daley was right
there with his syphon hose.
When Arne Duncan left and went
to work for Obama, instead of
replacing him with Dr. Barbara
Eason-Watkins, an educator to run
the board, and schools he turned it over to the
firm of Huberman and Mazanky.
Two yahoos who don't have a about
running a public education system.
And damm if they aren't turning out
"defective" products.
But they always need more and more
of taxpayers money.

"... Bomb and Arson? Couldn't or shouldn't fire handle that? Adjustments or restructuring is needed.

3/14/2011 08:00:00 AM"

Fighting fires and making rescues are very different skills than investigating the web of crimes that come from bomb and arson cases. Once the fire is out and the smoke is cleared it is a matter of checking records, examining evidence, interviews and preparing cases for court and that is a case for detectives.

Bomb Techs and Arson Investigators used to be the most educated and specialized personnel in the department. In the past few years Chicago has thrown away a lot of the institutional memory and experience from these people. This has been extremely foolish considering the possibility of terrorist attacks.

The little block in 006 that you talk about is on 76th street, and I believe it's on Normal. It's surrounded by shit and the houses are given for free to those who offer to foster children. It's a children's community and they're brand new houses built within the last 5 or 6 years. The only other nice area of 006 that I can think of is right behind the Stone Terrace lo-rise over on 85th off of Vincennes. Those are brand new houses butting up against the railroad tracks. I agree that some units are just doing the same as others. Disband most and put them back in the district to help answer all the calls.

As fas as B&A, I have a friend on the fire side that use to work in OFI(office of fire investigation). He said the reason it's a to department job is that CFD determines if the fire was accidental of purposely se, where it was started & what was used. Then the police investigate to solve the crime & make arrest. CFD members don't have the expierence of staff to investigate.

Horseshit! I work in a busy westside district, I remember when I got here a few years ago about 2/3's of the watch worked hard, we had a few dogs, and everybody else did at least what was required of them (backing each other up, and handle calls in a timely manner).

And don't give any of this"hair gel/ wait till you get some time on kid" bullshit. When I first got to my watch there were guys with 10, 13, 15 years on the job who are still out there locking motherfuckers up everyday.

It makes me sick, when it's a busy weekend night and there are 2,3,4 cars holding themselves down till they get a tahoe, or talking to the watch secretary for 2 hours. And don't get me started on the female p.o.'s, who only manage to go down on a stop when you need one for a search. Now, I've worked with some great female coppers, but it's like these broads got together one day and decided not to do a god damn thing!

Sorry to rant, there is more that grinds my gears, but it's time to enjoy my day of! be safe.

7920 eggelston (spelling) was were my irish grandmother lived. I went there as a child many times. My mother skated there her whole childhood and they always called it the lagoon. I had fond memories of the place too bad my grandfather was armed rob and my uncle (double purple heart)and later contracted polio (cripped)was robbed too. Of course my father had to move them the fuck out of there. Animals runied yet another fine place to live.

Is there is any truth, or whenever this happens, they will have to be retrained. Case reports? Missing Persons? Domestics?
