Suburban Shooting

  • Responding to a 911 call about a suicidal man, two Naperville police officers shot and killed a man who came at them with a large knife early this morning, police said this afternoon.

William Ladew, 47, of the 500 block of Lake Street in Aurora, refused an order to drop the knife, police said.

The officers -- a police sergeant on the force for 19 years and a 10-year veteran officer -- have been placed on administrative leave per department policy, police said.

We roll out the dark humor whenever some deserving jagoff is rightfully shot by the police, but "suicide by police" is one of those things that ends up with the involved officers second guessing a lot of things. Hopefully, the officers get the support they need and we're damn happy you went home safely.

Second guess NOTHING.

Regret NOTHING.

Sleep like a new born child.

You did what you are trained to do,

what the Law asks you to do,

and what society needs you to do.

And this summer, when you barbeque with YOUR family, you can contimplate how precious they are to you.

And while I barbeque with mine, I will think about how glad I am that there are police out there willing to bear this burden.

Great Job Officers. CPD is proud of you.

Good job, Naperville PD. It's always a win when you go home with the same number of "holes" you started out with. You did the right thing!

There is no safe bastions left, not even lalaville, where they like to DUI/and rat each other out like little girls.

I think one of our own left to become a Agentville cop a while back, hopefully it was him continuing to make us proud.(2nd Notch?) Stay safe out there, the West side is getting closer gentlemen... and when the beast arrives you will hopefully band together as it should be.

I never liked it when police officers used the mob term "rat". But I'm guessing you are not much of a police officer. This post is out of line anywhere, but especially on this post.

Nice job officers, glad you are OK.

f you anna davlantes and the entire Fox morning show for that matter! They show the image of the dork (for lack of better words) from Streamwood "beating" the guy over a traffic stop (and I use "" around the word beating because the guy is hitting him as hard as he can and is barely making the victim grimace!) Anna talks about the brutality this and trial started that and how the DORK is facing upto 5 years in prison blah blah blah....and now that they have everyone fired up about the police..SHE LAUNCHED RIGHT INTO THE NAPERVILLE STORY SAYING NOTHING MORE THAN "2 police officers from Naperville are on administrative leave after shooting a man who allegedly pointed a knife at them"...THATS IT! Nthing about how it is department policy and that it by no means assumes fault by either officer...NOOOOOOO....just left it out there so all the good people can lump the GOOD SHOOT in with the dork from streamwood...I was waiting for the Abatte video to pop up immediately after! FUCK YOU DAVLANTES AND THE FOX NEWS CREW!!!!!

There is a LOT of pressure on society that you don't see from your perspective. All you do is cash your check every two weeks and think everyone owes you an automatic 3-4% raise.

The people that have always picked up the tab for government (including YOUR bloated salary) have been losing jobs for the last decade and getting ones that pay a lot less. (A LOT LESS)

I am surprised there are not more suicides and people just running off the cliff because they have lost a lot in their life and cannot regain it, especially in Illinois.

I have seen middle-class families disinegrate from lost jobs, foreclosed homes and the stress of all of that actually causing death.

When the part of society that is picking up the tab starts to crumble, you better really start praying.

Suicide-by-cop is a bad omen. You worry about the West side?? Better start worrying when the people who support you (AND pick up the tab for your salary and pension) start losing theirs.

(It's already happening)

No worries Officers. He (the disturbed individual), made a decision to advance on trained, armed profesionals, knowing full well the outcome. Suicide by cop is supposed to mess with your head, well it shouldn't. He forced your hand. The alternative would be your demise. The choice is always easy, "him or me." It's a no brainer...HIM every time.

Never violate rule #1-go home safe at the end of your shift. You've achieved that goal so no worries. Don't ever let survival mess with your head.

You don't need to go high fiving everyone you see or celebrate the use of deadly force. Taking a life is a serious matter-even if that life was derranged. Make peace with yourself and move on. Blessed are the Peacemakers for they shall be known as the sons of God.

Well done, take the time you need to heal and never second guess threats as they present themselves. Be safe!

I don't know why police can't have "magic bullets" that would not kill, but only wound people. Why couldn't a police helicopter drop a net over the man to keep him safe? Maybe drop a net over Naperville to keep it safe? If Naperville banned the sale of knives, except for maybe rubber knives or knives made out of foam, this man would be alive. Police should not be allowed to have guns, except when they have to shoot someone, but only after the Mayor reviews the need for them to take the guns out of the police station. And the officer that unsnapped his gun, should be fired and maybe put in prison, because someone could be killed if his gun is unsnapped and he is able to pull it out. If officers were carrying empty guns, nobody would be killed by them. If they need a gun with bullets, they could call the National Guard. If these officers had obeyed the traffic laws, the man with the knife would have been gone by the time they got there, and would be alive today.

29.....,That's it exactly-they don't know AND they love to take cheap shots every time they can mouth off on a story involving the police. Well, some of us appreciate the Police and have great respect for the job you do keeping the peace and keeping the crazies at bay. Thank you all, and do what you must to stay safe.

"After receiving a 911 call about a suicidal person, an on-duty uniformed officer and a sergeant responded to a second-floor apartment at 1135 W. Ogden Ave. in Naperville, according to reports.

“The subject’s female friend allowed the officers into the apartment and the subject advanced from a back bedroom toward the officers, with a large knife, in a threatening manner,” according to the news release. “Officers ordered the subject to drop the knife and he refused. In fear for their lives, the officers shot the subject. Immediately thereafter first aid was rendered to the subject.”

"Personnel from the Naperville Fire Department responded and transported Ladew to Edward Hospital, according to the release."

Just shedding a bit more light -- happened indoors, not much wiggle room and the guy's comin' at ya...

Sad all the way around. A prayer for the person's poor disturbed soul -- something must have been bothering him that he didn't know how to deal with. I hope he has found rest now -- and a prayer for his friend and family as well, they have a tragedy to deal with.

...and tomorrow's another day...

TO: I never liked it when police officers used the mob term "rat".

You miss the point entirely sir.

"A rat by any other name is still a rat."

When your officers do nothing but try to "rat" each other out about he was 2 mins over on his lunch or intentionally set up to arrest each other for some personal vendetta, that is pretty pathetic.

Pay attention point is coming...

Stay together, back each other up, leave the HS shit at home, and prepare for the beast that is at your back door because THAT was Daley's legacy, he leveled the projects and sent the shit to you via Section 8...

So I know that the most important thing is Coppers are OK and did a great job. But drop the nonsense you subject each other because PO So-in-so didn't issue a ticket to the illegal garage sale and he took off again to take care of his family, stop being petty and start being the Police you always wanted to be...

Second or third year on, riding with an old-timer whose partner was on furlough, walked into a suicide by cop situation, guy holding a knife to his belly with the third floor window broke out, threatening to stab himself. jump. Old-timer, which one are you going to do ? Shoot me, Fuck you, you gotta gun ? "No, I got a knife," yelling, balh blah blah,,,Fuck you, walks out and closes the door, "If he opens the door with the knife, we have to shoot him," What if he jumps ? He won't jump,,,One minute more, crying, open the door, guy is on the floor crying, sorry for this and that, taken to hospital, saw him months later after he got out of the VA hospital. Later I asked the old-timer how he knew the guy wasn't going to kill himself, he said, I didn't know, and I didn't fucking care, you start giving a shit too much you end up like him and alot of cops end up like him...
Not questioning the Naperville coppers here, just telling a story.

Everything you say is true, but I take offense at your description of our "bloated salary". For what we do (and what we are EXPECTED to do and face every day) we are nowhere near paid what we should be.......

"BlOATED" salary? When we were earning peanuts compared to these folks, and people would look at us in disdain for our poor earning potential, these people were living the high life in suburbia buying homes they couldn't afford, living a lifestyle they couldn't afford, and they have the nerve to envy a POLICE OFFICERS'S salary? YOU'VE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!

I say to those people, come fill out an application and join us if you want this "bloated" salary so badly! We need you, our ranks are depleted and you should have no trouble passing the police exam! Or are you too reluctant to strap on a gun and do what we do even at our "bloated" salary? Give me a break!

I find it extremely funny that my "bloated salary" is upsetting. I seem to recall getting shot in the knee, tackling a subject and rolling down 3 flights of stairs serving a warrant (it was kinda funny), and getting shot at on an almost daily basis. Yet football players that don't handle the life and death decisions and injuries on a daily basis make millions. David Beckham made 200 million over a 5 year contract. Really, that's 40 million a year. I don't know about any of you,but I don't make ANYWHERE NEAR 40 million. I think my morale would improve and would feel more appreciated if I did. It wouldn't fix my knee, but it would certainly make it more worth it. Then again, I didn't get into this "business" for the money.
