Election News

Some good, some still waiting:
  • Stone loses big - Ald. Bernard Stone, the second-longest-serving Chicago City Council member, conceded defeat tonight to challenger Debra Silverstein in the 50th Ward contest.

With 84 percent of precincts counted, Silverstein had 62 percent to 38 percent for Stone.

  • Police hater and drunk driver Dixon loses - In the West Side’s 24th Ward former alderman Michael Chandler ousted bitter rival and current alderman Sharon Denise Dixon. Chandler had a 60-40 lead with all precincts counted.

Chandler, who held the office for 12 years before Dixon defeated him in 2007, had called Dixon “the worst alderman in the history of Chicago.”

  • CFD's Sposato wins - Firefighter Nick Sposato, 52, a political neophyte, came out of nowhere Tuesday to knock off Ald. John Rice (36th).

With 100 percent of precincts reporting, the underfunded and unknown Sposato led Rice 56 percent to 44 percent

  • Garrido is behind by twenty-nine votes. We aren't sure if this total includes absentees and provisional ballots though. We aren't sure on that process, but that's close enough for the Machine to steal it for Arena.
An interesting finish.

Yeah and he was none too graceful about it, at least in the clip shown on CBS-TV.

He said he "felt sorry" for residents of the ward because he thought Silverstein wouldn't do a good job.

Very classy, Bernie. Good riddance to bad trash!

Arena led a negative campaign. Garrido held true to a gentleman's election. Shame on you 45 ward residents who didn't vote for John.
I had a long discussion with Arena in person and his answer to the budget deficit question was to rid the city of pensions and leave you in the hands of Social Security. He also said he would be for privatization for the money and use it as a stop gap measure until the economy returns. The scariest part was when I asked him where the majority of his campaign contribution had come from. He is part of the problem and not of the solution.
I will be leaving this city and state by the end of the year. Enjoy your win, I hope yo choke on it.

"Ald. Bernard Stone, the second-longest-serving Chicago City Council member, conceded defeat tonight to challenger Debra Silverstein in the 50th Ward contest."

Rep. Ira Silverstein's daughter. This is funny. Stone crying crocodile tears on the radio today, he made Silverstein what he is today, did anything for him, now this treachery. Like a stab in my heart!

Stone publicly refusing to "lift a finger" to help Debra Silverstein get started. Privately, they'll all get together for lunch and have a good laugh.

I think there's still an "Elect Bernard Stone" wall sign -- painted up high where it survived -- on a building on Devon near California. Looks like it was put there about 1948...

Enough. It's not like this is going to make the slightest difference anyway. Be quiet and go.

Wrong.

Sid Davis was elected as Recording Secretary and is still Recording Secretary. What Sid is not is a Field Rep. Thus, he doesn't work at FOP HQ but Sid Davis is the elected recording Secretary.

Two others were brought in as Field Reps, Jim McCarthy and Saul Del Rivero. I don't know what other elected officer was replaced as Field Rep, likely Aguilar or Caparelli.

Also Mark Donahue's assistant, Mary Pat was let go as was Aguilar's secretary, Cathy.

Also, Attorney Tom Pleines was fired.

More news as it filters down.

The candidate on the short end of a very close 45th Ward aldermanic election is going to wait until more ballots are counted Friday before deciding on a recount.

Unofficial tallies show John Arena leading John Garrido by a margin of just 29 votes out of 12,077 cast.
Arena is calling himself the winner, but at least 49 absentee and provision ballots in the race won’t be counted until Friday, Garrido said.

I lost and I learned yesterday that might have been a good thing.

Gust Avrakotos: There's a little boy and on his 14th birthday he gets a horse... and everybody in the village says, "how wonderful. The boy got a horse" And the Zen master says, "we'll see." Two years later, the boy falls off the horse, breaks his leg, and everyone in the village says, "How terrible." And the Zen master says, "We'll see." Then, a war breaks out and all the young men have to go off and fight... except the boy can't cause his legs all messed up. and everybody in the village says, "How wonderful."

You LOSE the FOP election for FINANCIAL SECRETARY and you WIN a $140,000. a yr. job.

You WIN the FOP election for RECORDING SECRETARY (and you're the biggest vote getter) and you LOSE your $140,000. a yr job and get a $7,200. a yr. stipend?

John Garrido was told that a recount would cost upward of $20,000.00 Tonight he is holding an online fundraiser at www.johngarrido.com

It is galling that John has to come up with the money for a recount, considering how close the vote is. He is separated by only 29 votes, with 48 absentee votes outstanding.

John Garrido also has a facebook page which will refer you to his website to donate.

Any amount over $5.00 would be appreciated.

It wasn't 100% of the VOTE, it was 100% of the precincts counted.

Absentee ballots are mailed in and they are NOT counted unless they can actually have a effect on the outcome.
Most times, the outcome is clear enough that they don't NEED to ever be counted. In this case, they become critical.

Folks it is not over in the 45th Ward. There are still absentee votes and provisional votes to be counted tomorrow. Last I heard there were near 50 absentee votes to be counted. If Garrido has to request a recount which he has until Monday, April 11th end of business day to do so he will need to raise funds. With that said I am posting a link a recount will cost him approximately $20,000. I am donating because I believe in his ability to RUN & REVITALIZE the 45th ward from Six Corners to Super Dawgs! AND I really don’t want the SEIU as our next Alderman. If you can spare even $5 please consider donating. It is tax deductible! You can donate at his website via pay pal or write and check mail or drop off. http://www.johngarrido.com/ Thanks for reading this far and thanks for supporting him.

Maybe I'll take a walk to pedestrian friendly Sears at Six Corners with the 40% of vacant storefronts.

Welcome to Arenaville!!!

Just donated $25 to John Garrido via his website.

Wish I had done that before the election but I was helping out Sposato in my neighborhood.

Good Luck John!

I donated to John and support him wholeheartedly no matter what he decides to do. One thing though, political donations are NOT tax deductible.
