A Federal Investigation?

First, Rahm brings in a schools chief who is the subject of at least two federal lawsuits alleging discriminatory practices. Now it comes to light that the new superintendent might also have a bit of explaining to do:
  • The U.S. Department of Justice announced today it is investigating the policies and practices of Newark Police Department, headed since 2006 by the man who has been tapped to lead the Chicago Police Department.

The move comes eight months after the state American Civil Liberties Union complained of rampant misconduct and lax internal oversight in the Newark Police Department, though federal and city officials said the ACLU's petition wasn't the main reason for the probe.

U.S. Attorney Paul Fishman said justice officials will also look into allegations of poor treatment of detainees in holding cells and will investigate whether officers have retaliated against those who legally observe, or record, police activity.
On one hand, we're appalled that such a thing could happen. Doesn't Rahm have an "in" to the White House? Shouldn't he have known about this potential embarrassment before it cropped up in the papers?

On the other hand, the stuff Newark PD is accused of is exactly what the Chicago Police Department was alleged to have been doing by the exact same ACLU bottom-feeders. So we guess it's kind of comforting in a way. It's familiar ground. It's almost like McCarthy is coming home after an extended absence.

This might work out well after all.

Just because there's a fed investigation into the Newark PD doesn't mean it will ever touch McCarthy. Hell, look at all the inquiries into the Burge tortures....even though there's ample evidence that the then-Supt. and the then-CCSA know about the seriousness of the allegations, nothing has ever happened to either of them. So McCarthy shouldn't start sweating about it.
The feds will find some bottom feeders if need be to feed to the public/media, and then the whole thing will just go away...leaving the next Newark Chief to sign over everything in some sort of consent-decree for the next 5 to 7 years or so.

The ACLU is one of those organizations that jumped the shark a long time ago after they were subverted by the communists. In theory, they provide a vital service to the Republic, like news papers. In reality, they're whores for the bottom feeding lawyers, liberals and others who hate American society.

I'd be worried if the new boss wasn't hated by the poverty pimps and other assorted bottom feeders. The enemy of my enemy might be my friend.

The media should submit FOIA's relating to the concerns that DOJ had relating to the Chicago Police Department during the tenure of Cline.

They will discover that DOJ was about to go to court relating to CPD and to prevent this fom happening Daley agreed to hire a FBI agent to replace Cline. This is how we ended up with Weis.

Why have us start with a leader plagued by scandal. What if any of this has some truth to it? Does the ACLU not think that some people, omigosh, lie about brutality after they have been arrested? in the 1990s, this was a common defense tactic for court: file a complaint for brutality, thus began the defense attorney's and the defendant's path to putting "reasonable doubt" in the jury's mind.

Federal investigation my ass. They are responding to reverends and bottom feeders who did not like the "take back the streets" efforts after McCarthy took over Newark. "why can't we stand on the corners and sling dope"? "Why are the poelice going through us and taking our pistols away"? He told his coppers to clean things up, they did and guess who didn't like it? Too fucking bad. I live in this city and I hope that the same policies go into effect here. On this thread there is a post about a shooting in Scottsdale. A once proud and relatively crime free community, which is now going to shit. I wonder why.

I'm retired now, but when I came on (early 80's) we did the roust em stuff all the time. It was fun and they knew who was boss. I'd like to see that come back.

Stay safe everybody!

Newark police union vote 'no confidence' in city's police director after ACLU petition

Newark’s Superior Officers Association has reignited its feud with the city’s police director with a "no confidence" vote that may undercut his bid to remain at the helm of the state’s largest police force.

"The managers and supervisors of the Newark Police Department have no faith or confidence in his leadership ability," said Chrystal.

Chrystal said McCarthy has "no plan" to reorganize the Department in the face of planned demotions that will vacate the rank of captain and leave no minorities ranked above lieutenant. McCarthy maintains the agency’s six deputy chiefs will be able to handle precinct commands, while demotions will not harm diversity in the department and actually create more racial balance at the rank of lieutenant.

The union’s announcement comes at a crucial time for McCarthy, who must go before a city council that has not hesitated to defy Booker in recent months. A recent straw poll of council members showed McCarthy has two "yes" votes and two "no" votes. Five remain undecided.

The FOP may also push for a "no confidence" vote next month, according to Hatcher, who said he will actively campaign to block McCarthy’s reappointment.

"We have absolutely no confidence in McCarthy," he said. "This administration is wrong, and what McCarthy is doing is wrong. Nobody has attempted to find any monies, any way, to save any jobs here."

I'm just saying....damn! I would have rather had my own Chicago bred Top Cop...

oh and by the way....check him out on the reality show "Brick City" on Sundance, wow! what a piece of work!

He's the classic entitled white authority figure with a mentality of being constantly besieged! He also has good credentials, as a police chief. He was successful in NYC, he's been successful (relatively) in Newark, and there's no reason to think he'd be any different in Chicago. There's also no reason to think he wouldn't continue acting like an entitled lord of the city. Like the time, in 2005, when he was arrested and convicted of disorderly conduct for trying to get his own daughter out of a ticket for parking in a handicapped spot:

When a pair of plainclothes Parkway police officers issued a ticket, McCarthy's daughter allegedly explained that she had an ankle injury caused by a prior accident and had been issued a placard, but didn't have it with her.

Garry McCarthy was then accused of driving up in a police SUV, blocking the unmarked New Jersey police car and engaging in a shouting match with the plainclothes officer. He was placed in handcuffs and led away as a crowd watched.

He was simply informing those cops of the unwritten rule of tickets! Maybe a police chief who's both successful and likeable is too much to ask. For all I know, the other candidates for the Chicago gig are even pricklier than McCarthy. They just don't have the Sundance Channel around to show it.

How much respect do you give a guy for showing up and attempting to impede an investigation, this is B.S.

Remember what happened to John Matthews a former Commander, demoted to lieutenant after he showed up in the 019th in defense of his son who was arrested?

Please, please tell me the difference.....????

Shove our bridge, O'Brien is right, we were close to being sued by the Justice department and the fear was we'd end up working under a federal consent decree with fed oversight of the entire CPD.

Weis' hiring ended that.

A fed consent decree can also suspend labor contracts to streamline reforms and the fed can shitcan work rules they don't like.

It was to the City and FOP advantage to avoid a consent decree.

True.
