Awards Luncheon

  • Chicago police Sgt. Jason Kaczynski and Officer Kimberly Thorp were on desk duty, both recovering from medical issues, when the sound of gunfire ripped through the police facility on 61st Street last July.

Thorp was outside first. She spotted another officer taking cover behind a squad car, then she took aim at the gun-wielding man advancing toward her amid a spray of bullets.

Close behind, with weapon drawn, Kaczynski fired several shots as he passed through the station's open door, striking the gunman in the chest.

What the two officers did not realize immediately was that Officer Thor Soderberg had been mortally wounded in the parking lot moments earlier. The man they encountered outside the facility was Bryant Brewer, who was charged with Soderberg's murder and is awaiting trial.
There really ought to be a listing of all the recognized winners along with a narrative of their actions. That by itself would be a morale booster. In any event, congrats to all the awardee,

Would it really bost moral? I dont think it would after reading a few that were certianly not deserving but we all know who their clout is. Or the ones where the sergeant puts himself on the paper too. Don't get me wrong, there were 70 awards given out, thats a lot of brave men and women, and i am proud of all the deserving ones. btw nice job sgt kaczynski and officer thorp.

While this was the first year I was not honored at the event, I attended, and showed my support and congratulations to all of the deserving awardees. What an impressive group of Officers, none more than the young lad who received 3 AOV, wow — you're truly a legend. Kim Thorpe, excellent job, and you give a mean haircut too. Those three of you from the Area 2 task force, you bring chuckles where ever you go, great job lads. Glad you are healed up. Finally, I also want to thank all of those who keep bringing up my name for this job and that, it is humbling, but please do not campaign for me. I will let my work record, exams scores, and treatment of my troops speak for me. And for the record, it was not Yankee games, it was the football Giants. Oh yes, I did not eat all the corned beef either Myron.

Walking to and from my car every day in 15, I am conctantly running into shit heads using our lot as a short cut so they don't have to walk an extra block. It's gonna happen again but let's just sit back and take the wait and see approach. Then when it does happen all the clout babies in charge can point the finger and say why wasn't something done. O.T. You probably didn’t know that, as a student at DePaul University in the 1960s, the mayor served in the Marine Reserves.

Daley was a member of Marine Wing Communications Squadron 48, which, as one member would recall, “was very large and composed almost entirely of guys who joined to avoid the draft. These guys were my age, but had college degrees and good jobs.”

This Saturday, the Armed Forces Council of Chicago will host “A Tribute to Mayor Daley” at Soldier Field -- not for his military service, but for his support of cadet and Junior ROTC programs in the Chicago Public Schools. Chicago has the largest JROTC program in the nation, both in total cadets and schools. All four branches of the service – Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines – operates a public school in Chicago. In addition, there are nine military high schools run by the Chicago School District, and 10,000 students enrolled in JROTC programs.

WRONG! (Lighten up Francis)
It was my oversight in that I failed to include PO Kim Thorpe in my original post. No slight intended.
BOTH are 'Top Cops' as far as I'm concerned.
However, it's not a 'done deal.'
Jason and Kim are, as stated, semi-finalists in the Top Cop Award ceremony.
Like the Academy Awards, just the nomination alone is an honor.
(These ten semi-finalists are dwindled down from a large number of submissions from throughout the entire U.S.)
Then, on 12 May during the 'Top Cop' ceremony in D.C. each of the ten nominees, represented by a member of the Screen Actors Guild who played a role as a law enforcement officer in a TV series or movie have their submission reviewed in front of the audience.
Then at the conclusion, ONE member is chosen from that group as the (2011) "Top Cop," a segment of 'Police Week' in Washington D.C.

Thanks to all who honor 'ALL' the heroes of law enforcement, whether in attendance at the National Memorial or in prayers or spirit.
Good Luck to Kim and Jason, truly "Chicago's Finest."

See ya' in D.C.

Subject: wta training

This is additional training offered to members of the wta. they get instructers to train women and a few select men(men part is a joke about male members). this is out of pocket training not given by the department. they are using the academy as a host location. however if you seek to hone your tactical skills an organization geared towards men is available. illinois tactical officers association is a great organization that offers great training. it's run by police for police. if you want to start an association within the department then go ahead. these women do it for themselves. dont knock them for doing something to better themselves.

It would be so bad, but KB has fucked over many cops! Not to mention she is a complete goof and DOES NOT HAVE THE SKILL SET TO TRAIN ANYTHING. Just think she has a badge and gun, when most PO's know she cannot be trusted with a stop sign and whistle.

There are 10 incidents selected from all Law Enforcement agencies in the U.S. their's is one of them. All officer involved receive the honors. NOt knocking anyone for trying to better themselves. It sjust seems that KB is the only one really getting anything out of all this, $$$$$.
The department needs to stop using the Academy as a Community CEnter and go back to using is as a training facility for ALL CPD members!

READ the post of 08:48.
(paraphrased)
ALL 'nominees' have their incidents reviewed in front of the audience with a TV/Movie rep as their sponsor.
ALL incidents are reenacted or TV file footage is used to portray their incidents.
The fact that the film crew was there does not make them a shoe-in, it's just part of the 'Top-Cop' event process.
(They all are 'top-cops' in my mind, however from the ten semi-finalists, they select one as the {2011} honoree.
Attend the National Memorial in DC during Police Week and you'll be 'better informed.'
Just Saying....
(Good luck to Chicago's Finest)

Sgt Kaczynski, and Officers Thorp and Casey have already won one of the "Top Cop" awards. Ten are selected from across the country. Each of the Top Ten winners is then flown to Washington, DC for the award ceremony on 12 May, 2011. This is a great program that is hosted by John Walsh and is sponsored by NAPO, of which the PBPA is a member. From this group of ten a "Top Cop" finalist is chosen, but each of the awardees is already a Top Cop winner. I will see them in D.C.

He was Daily's guy all the way. Daily made the phone call to get him exempt himself. True story

Really!!!! "Daily's" guy. Gimme a break. You can't even spell Daley correctly, but you are right. We all know that he was Daley's guy. He has been hooked to the family for years. It still goes without saying that he doesn't deserve an award, except maybe a suckass award.

Rent a gym for a host location! If the department is not running the training it shouldn't be held at the academy. Liability issues??
