And the Award Goes to...

  • Mayor Daley has been around so long and shuffled the deck of his City Hall cabinet so many times, he was bound to draw some bad hands.

That’s the way it goes when you’re Chicago’s longest serving mayor. Some of your appointees make you look like a genius. Others make you look like a fool. Or even worse, they embarrass you by resigning in scandal.

Daley has experienced his fair share of good and bad over the last 22 years.

  • The mayor’s decision to hire career FBI agent Jody Weis as police superintendent —and pay him $310,000-a-year — is the most notorious flop for the morale problems it caused. But there were other, earlier examples.
Ouch. That's going to leave a mark. Nice to see Fran is still doing Shortshanks' dirty work, right up until the very end. We wonder if Rahm's going to hire her like the Shankster hired Heard all those years ago.

Does anyone else remember what he tearfully shouted at the press when they asked him years ago if he was grooming Patrick to take over.

"My son is dead!" Referring to his (R.I.P.) infant son who died.

That is some serious family dysfunction.

I don't blame Weis for the disaster that the CPD evolved into under his watch as much as I hold Daley himself, and Masters, to blame. Daley sent Weis that pint size
managerial mistake, and it hurt the Dept. plenty.

I heard it on good authority that when Weis dumped
John Risley, he actually wanted to keep him when he found out what Risley's responsibilities entailed.
But O'keefe, who was present when Weis lowered
the bomb on Risley, held a list, and when Weis inquired of O'Keefe if it was possible to keep Risley (at least for a little longer), O'Keefe shook his head
after viewing this 'list,' and said 'no.'

Who do you think put this 'list' of gotta go names together? Daley couldn't have put that list together himself. It's been suspected for some time that the
list had actually been compiled my Masters himself,
and O'Keefe was dispatched to ensure that those on the list were cut immediately to make room for
people such as Masters, Roman, etc.

Even though Weis was a dolt with a history of buffoonery at the Feeb, don't blame him totally for the mess left for McCarthy. Daley and Masters share most of the blame for the poor planning, poor decision making, and for never accepting blame for
disaster after disaster for numerous departmental poor decisions made at City Hall.

At least Daley will be gone next week; Masters has now been quietly shoved down Preckwinkle's throat
as the price for Machine support in her victory for
CC Board Prez. At least Rahm had enough sense to ditch that loser. Hope Preckwinkle survives that fool.

The City Colleges of Chicago is honored that Mayor Richard M. Daley will address our faculty, staff, students and their families during our Spring Commencement on May 11th at UIC Pavilion.

This will be one of the Mayor's final speeches before leaving office in mid-May. Mayor Daley has been an unparalleled leader of our city for more than two decades.

We hope you will join us to witness this historic speech and take the opportunity to celebrate his commitment to our institution and education across Chicago.

Great post. Just saw where NYC did exactly the opposite. Bloomberg hired a Deputy Mayor (Steven Goldsmith) for Operations who oversees the NYPD. When interviewed by Brian Lamb Goldsmith said I don't need to tell Kelly how to run NYPD, who to assign etc. I was recently in Manhattan and felt much safer than the loop even riding the subway at night.
Daley treated CPD like it was Streets and San, just another place for for connected hacks to get a spot.

I am going to puke if I read another article praising Daley for his passion for the city. He lost focus, took the easy way out - circuses for the masses on borrowed money and passed out city jobs as political favors until the whole thing is ready to implode.

When asked, he told me that he point blank pulled the trigger to smoke "some motherfucker" and missed. I asked him why and he said "because I was going kill that motherfucker, bitch why you think." And I said, the cops knew you meant to kill this guy and you were charged with battery? And he smiled and said "Yeah, man, motherfucking battery."

Interesting quote;

"Police officials said they welcomed the probe. Detective James Stewart, Jr., vice president of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge No. 12 in Newark, said they were cooperating with the investigation, but that oversight of the police, and department regulations, were more stringent than ever.

"If anything, there is excessive discipline in this department," Stewart said. "The perception that we run around out there and do whatever we want to is completely untrue."
