Connecticut Connection?

  • Taking a page from the 2002 film Minority Report, New Haven cops want the feds to help them to predict crimes and preempt perpetrators of crimes before they act.

In the neo-noir sci fi flick, detective Tom Cruise has a device that shows him who’s going to commit what nefarious deed before it occurs.

New Haven’s police department hasn’t reached that ambitious goal yet. But it has applied for a federal grant to get started.

Assistant Police Chief Tobin Hensgen told the Board of Aldermen;s Public Safety Committee about the plan Wednesday night. The aldermen then authorized the police department to apply for and accept, if successful, a $300,000 two-year grant from U.S. Department of Justice for a cutting-edge crime analysis computer software package that “will involve geospatial predictive analysis and threshold analysis.”
Why do we care about New Haven, Connecticut? We don't really, except an old friend works there:
  • Currently the department does basic analysis of data largely using crime statistics and knowledge of hot spots to predict and to deploy resources.

That’s pretty primitive by technology standards.

“We can see hot spots right now, but the new software can actually predict placement of crime based on models where it’s likely to be displaced, and what kinds of resources we put in place,” said Chief Frank Limon.
Hi Frank! A quick question - how is that $300,000 being spent?
  • Of the $300,000, $216,000 is for the new software, the remaining $84,000, for overtime.
New software. That wouldn't happen to be software developed in Chicago, would it? The article is kind of vague, but we must confess we have our suspicions about Chicago connections and all. Maybe we're just too damn cynical.

I can tell you one thing. If Brett or Lewin made that deal, us remaining mopes got nothing out of the deal!

Maybe Brett's new friend Rahm got the $216,000? Or maybe it was one of those last minute deals that Richie pulled off on his way to his new retirement thievery? Either way, I've got some swampland in Florida to sell the DOJ, if they're interested.

The Thought Police.

And it's the age old case of stronger armor, stronger weapons. Viruses mutate and so will criminals

The other catch phrase that applies is this:

"When the only tool that you have in the toolbox is a hammer... everything looks like a nail."

In this case it's the computer and we think it's going to do everything.

Deniers need to be laughed at and ridiculed and labeled as resistant to change -- not able to grasp new technology or concepts.

Money thrown out the window imo.

..and let me just point out what many are already aware of.

The software is base upon regressive analysis of what has happened in the past.

The software identifies traditional hot spots and we already see the crime going random and mobile.

Hell the media even labels the perps as members of a "crew" as opposed to a gang member because the phrase gang member implies a territory, a turf.

So the virus is already mutating and adapting to saturation teams and hot spots. Now it's becoming more and more random.

Better start sticking wheels on those pod cams as they are becoming outdated as we speak.

Retired Chief of Organized Crime Frank Limon is the current Chief in New Haven.

The FOP in New Haven recently passed a no confidence vote regarding Limon.

It appears he has brought Chicago high ranking stupidy with him to New Haven.

Frank Limon is a very dim bulb and chose to bring two clueless people with him to the NHPD, Wheeler and Hensgen. Sincere condolences and a wish of better days in the future to the NHPD and the people of New Haven.

I used this type of analysis for my dissertation and for several projects I've worked on. First off, there is no reason the software should cost this much. The software I used (which produced the pictures shown a year or so ago on local news...the same software) is available for FREE! Secondly, the analysis is not regression based, but log-linear(not that it matters a whole lot to a non-nerd audience)analysis of odds ratios but does require specific data to be useful. That said, I think there is value (not life-saving but informational) in these analyses, but not for that much money. What a joke.
