Still No Gang Problem - Just Heat
This time, seven arrests though:
- More than a dozen young men attacked a person Saturday night in the Streeterville neighborhood outside a building on Northwestern University's downtown campus, according to an alert issued by the university.
Seven people thought to be part of that group, mostly youth, were arrested on "mob action charges" when Chicago police and Northwestern police responded, according to police News Affairs [...].
About 8:30 p.m., the victim had parked his motor scooter outside the building on Chicago Avenue, a little west of Lake Shore Drive, when about 15 to 20 males--believed to be in their mid-to-late teens--approached him, according to the alert, which categorized the incident as an attempted robbery. One of the males in that group threw a baseball at the victim's face and knocked him to the ground, the alert stated.
- Other recent mob action or flash mob incidents downtown include one in April, when a group of about 70 youths stormed a McDonald's restaurant on Dearborn Street and Chicago, and created a disturbance. The restaurant was closed for nearly three hours.
In February, Loyola University warned its Water Tower campus students and staffers about "flash mob offenders," who would exit from Chicago Avenue's CTA Red Line station and allegedly steal items from retail stores around the campus.

Interesting, isn't it, that these two incidents weren't reported until AFTER Loyola U and Northwestern U police sent out a warning to their students?
Maybe Chicago's citizens should all sign up for security alerts from the local university's if they want to be advised of dangerous conditions around here.
It will take some off duty cop or security guard to light up several of these animals before widespread attention is paid.
Either that or some tourists or students get seriously hurt. Don't the people in charge know how dangerous and bad this is?
Chicago has a major weather problem, the mayor should have hired a meteorologist for a superintendent.
I am cpd and I'm training for the marathon. A lot of my long runs are going to be on the lakeshore path. I have one of those belts that holds the waterbottles, keys, some power gel, and my ruger lcp. I may even leave my ipod exposed with headphones on even though I don't listen to music when I run. I promise I will do what needs to be done when the flash mob comes for me.
Call the Media and tell them they are endangering the public by not giving descriptions of possible offenders to watch out for. Let it lie where it lays, Chinese, Afro American, senior citizens, whatever...
As a PO that has to deal with these problems constantly, I can honestly say that nothing will change until we at least can identify the problem. What is wrong with saying black youth? I have noticed lately that even some other POs don't state race. It is NOT racist to state the race of an offender!

I was downtrown in 018 last night. I work down there. I am not a cop but am a lifelong Chicagoan. I saw several bands of these black "youths" roaming in groups down there on Clark Street and up by the old Water Tower and I can tell you for the first time in a long time I felt in fear of my safety down there -- only because there are so many of them together at once. Several of the males were shirtless and had their pants down below their asses showing off their boxers in full ghetto regalia fashion. In groups of 15 and larger, all loud and boisterous and obnoxious, talking their usual shit -- Fenger H.S. type citizens. I almost called 911 twice to report the groups but I didn't what to say (I'm reporting a roving flash mob on Chicago Ave??). I would not be surprised if the one group I saw by the tower are the offenders involved in the Northwestern campus attack as they appeared primed to commit an act of violence. I did not see any cops anywhere near the water Tower and I am not at all criticizing deployments but I'll tell ya what these little bastards are on a roll and probable cause to stop should be a given as soon as they appear from the subways. Good luck. I do not envy your job having to deal with this shit and here it's only early June.

My wife is a student on NU's downtown campus and received an alert email from the school last night that did give a general description of "african-american" and 16-20 years old.
These attacks are getting alarming... I'm especially worried because my parents live a block from this attack, my grandparents are also right in the Michigan Ave. area as are my aunt & uncle. Plus, my in-laws are here from overseas for a sabbatical and living right near Lake Shore and regularly take walks between Navy Pier & Oak St. beach.
Um, how come the pod cameras in the area didn't jump off the pole and save that poor man from being attacked?

Just read a story about a woman high school art teacher in St. Petersburg Florida who was charged with child abuse when she cold cocked a student who was threatening her and had her up against a wall. The "kid" stood about a foot taller than the teacher and wouldn't back off. So the brave teacher gave him a right hook and knocked him right on his ass. The teacher is 64 years old. The charges were later dropped. This goes on all the time in our schools. Stop protecting these little animals and give them the punishment they deserve. We now see these same fools in the Flash Gangs terrorizing our lakefront and shopping areas. Time to put these little creeps in their place!

The Tribs breaking news comments are still open, but any comments mentioning race in any way, or criticizing the Trib. are being removed. This is sick.
As the number of "wilding" attacks amount, the media can no longer ignore this phenomena. They still persist, however, in failing to describe who the "wilders" are and why they are doing what they are doing.
The article noted in this post is a case in point. The Chicago Tribune reported what it characterized as a "mob attack." It described the offenders as "mostly youths," and as being "in their mid-to-late teens," confronted the victim. The article went on about crime statistics, but never mentioned who are committing these crimes.
This is where the liberal media's agenda creates even larger problems going forward. Here is how these problems will manifest themselves.
Everybody knows that black youths are responsible for these attacks. The failure to publicly say this is related to the liberal mantra about stereotyping blacks as criminals. This mantra has scolded us that we should not be prejudiced. Indeed, any notion that blacks are stereotyped as criminals is evidence that those who believe this are racists. Thus, the logic is this: if you believe roving black youths are potential criminals, as opposed to being "shoppers," then you must be a racist.
With this "logic" in mind, the reality of roving bands of black youths seeking to commit crimes leave police and security officials with a very delicate circumstance. Here is how this works. Do police confront black youths before they commit crimes? If they do, they also run the risk as being labeled as "racists." Why else would you confront a group of black youths who have not yet committed a crime?
Further, when the police confront these youths, do you think they will be inclined to cooperate? Remember many (or most) of them intend to commit crimes. What are the chances that these confrontations will go well? Do you think they will "resist" arrest or other police intervention. You bet they will. You can also bet that videos will be taken.
The videos will depict the police "harassing" and "abusing" these poor black kids. You get the picture. Do you think the media will "resist" showing these videos? I think not. It perfectly fits the template of the abusive (and racist) police officer abusing these poor black kids, who were doing nothing wrong!
Now that the media realizes the "monsters" that have been created--and the implications to public safety, and the economic viability of the city, it is even possible that the videos will not be shown by the media. If this happens, it will create controversy in the black community. Why are the police allowed to abuse our children? Why are the media refusing to shown these videos (which will be posted on YouTube)?
Do you see the inevitable dilemma? If these videos are shown, the hand-ringing will commence. Shame on the police! If they are not shown, conspiracy theories will prevail. Given that these will be embedded with the explosive racial component, it will inevitably lead to more black youths going "downtown" to make their own videos--and to commit crimes. As these occur more frequently, an inevitable conflict will occur, either with police or with some victim who happens to be armed.
The "explosive" nature of these implications is clear. Riots and urban unrest will result. Some percentage of the rioters will carry weapons, possibly assault weapons. If this occurs, the impact will be far reaching.
In the end, there is a "cause" to this effect. All concerned will have different perspectives of what precisely are the "causes." They will also have different notions of the "solutions." I offer neither causes or solutions. I simply connect the dots...

Man, we have a problem here.
The Loyola/Northwestern/University of Chicago police departments which patrol parts of those areas didn't get the memo. There is no crime around there. It's all heat related and merely mischievous children having some fun.
Seriously the first requirement of dealing with a problem is acknowledging a problem exists. Groups of black kids are coming downtown to cause trouble. I'm sure most of them are from the south and west sides, but perhaps a relative few are from the suburbs like our former mayor said last year. It really doesn't matter where they come from.
What matters is what they do and how the city and the police department respond. Do we acknowledge the problem and deal with it proactively or do we deny a problem exists? Do we wait until some tourist from South Dakota tries to defend his family and gets beaten to death and the video is posted to YouTube by the proud thugs?
This problem can be dealt with rather quickly if it is acknowledged. Put an appropriate number of cops downtown on bikes and have some Sheriff's buses on standby for the inevitable arrests. Put some cops in plainclothes as "targets" and wait till the young scalawags attack. Then hit back with an overwhelming and appropriate use of the escalating use of force model.
Let them rot in county until the summer is over and the States Attorney cuts them probation deals. Maybe in time so they can go back to school and terrorize their classmates.
Do this for a few weeks and the word will get out to the young rapscallions that downtown is off limits for violent crime.
Or just keep denying that a problem exists and close beaches and cancel fireworks and festivals.
It freaking amazes me. In 2003 this department "herded" anti Iraq war protesters onto Lake Shore Drive and then arrested them for being on Lake Shore Drive. I forget which clouted genius made that call. I recall Sheriff's buses being used to take those peaceful folks in.
If we can arrest hundreds of peaceful protesters it seems to me we can find a way to deal with a likely smaller number of lead paint sandwich eating thugs.
Call Sheriff Dart. He has the buses and I haven't seen him on TV for a day or two. Perhaps he can even let a few CCSPD personnel assist us in "thug wrangling". That's if they can be pulled away from arresting "rub and tug" operators in unincorporated areas.
One last thing to add to my rant.
If the city and police department don't get a handle on this then we might as well cancel Taste of Chicago right now. For that matter let's wall off the lakefront and any inland parks where trouble might occur.
Shit, in fact let's just evacuate and wall off the entire city and then let the airport cops patrol the fence line.

Did you hear the MacStupid on 102.7 this morning? He was asked outright by the radio host exactly what led to the shutdown of the beach on Memorial Day. Before he answered the host played interviews from individuals at the beach. Each one mentioned gangs, fights, rowdy crowds, etc and then a police presence shutting the beach down. When it was his turn to respond, I bullshit you not, he said, "I've been trying to set the record straight for a week now. That's not what happened. It was extremely hot and the water was cold. People were trying to stay cool but weren't going in the water and they passed out. Emergency personnel had a difficult time getting to them with all the crowds so the decision to shut the beach down was made."
Second statement regarding gangs. He wants to have a meeting with them and let them know they need to change their behaviour. He is going to tell them, "We aren't going to arrest you, but we will if we have to? Now what can we do to help you change?"
I just laughed hysterically. CRAZY!!!!

We here at the UCPD are praying that the cycle of abuse is over! Word around the UCPD is that John Doty's job has been advertised on the UofC website; It seems to have been taken down today.
If this is true, then Doty has either left the UCPD, or his departure is imminent. We are ecstatic at the news here! If Doty has left/or is leaving, we here at the UCPD want to thank you, SCC. By airing our disgust at working conditions under the guidance of Doty, it has obviously caused U of C officials to do something a mountain of grievances and a few lawsuits have failed to do; admit that they hired a seriously disturbed and incompetent man to the #2 post in our dept., a position in which he has failed miserably. You have our thanks again, SCC, along with the thanks of those in the CPD who have worked for Doty in the past, and provided colorful insight into the workings of a truly sick mind.

A police officer shot a man while responding to a burglary-in-progress call this morning near the United Center on the Near West Side officials said.
The incident happened about 6:45 a.m. in the 2000 block of West Monroe Street, said Chicago Police Officer Michael Sullivan, citing preliminary information.
Police said the person fled the residence and tried to escape the scene in a car. At one point an officer was pinned between the vehicle and a building.

Shots were fired and an officer fired a gun, hitting another person, who was taken to Stroger Hospital, Sullivan said. That person's condition was not known.
The police officer that was hit by the car was taken to Rush University Medical Center in stable condition, said Chicago Police Officer Laura Kubiak. He was treated and released for a minor injury, she said.
Investigators from the Independent Police Review Authority, the agency that investigates police-involved shootings, were on the scene as of about 9 a.m., said IPRA general counsel Eric Muellenbach.
The location is about a block west of the United Center.

It would go a long way to boost morale if you advise some of your underlings who apparently are afraid to make a decision that restrictive time due means just that restrictive and not PROHIBITED. You have several officers who have paid for trips that are still waiting to see if they are allowed to attend them next week. Trips that they have planned for at the beginning of the year. Some of these officers are all in limbo because they happen to be working for bosses who will not make a decision to approve their requests.
To deny time is one thing but to take away money as well is another matter.
Because of the time taken to make a decision most of these officers have already gone past their refund period, so if their time is denied they will be out money for the trip.

Superattendent Jersey McFibbler slams unhelpful reporting of an incident on Lake Shore Drive. Contrary to earlier reports what actually happened was a group of baseball honor fans was returning home from playing honor ball in the honor park when a baseball accidentally slipped out of someone's hand (due to having sweaty palms from the heat) and smashed a citizen in the face. The 15-20 honor yout rushed to help the injured man but in the crush caused by their stampede to be good samaritans the citizen accidentally suffered further injuries.
Some items belonging to the gentleman were also mislaid in the darkness.
Chicago trib actually posted the letter NorthWestern issued describing the attackers as Africa-Americans mid teens - 20's. Where is rev Jackson now? And you know there is going to be no mention of hate crime with all vics being 2's.

Make this a mission that will have a starting narrative that will draw the ASA and the judge's attention to the specificty of the problem. Now, all you need is money, because you are going to have to open up Special and other o.t. initiatives to counter this problem. Why tact and gangs are in uniform in these districts is beyond me, they need to get out on foot and be able to watch these fuckers. I disagree with you. The newest casino in Des Plaines will not put up with the bullshit from Chicago. Off duty police will quickly make arrests and bosses that back them up. We have handcuffs on. Out side Chicago they can do real police work.

Somewhat OT question for the officers on here: can citizens carry telescopic batons? I saw a "youth" riding the Red Line last week--with 5-6 friends--carrying what I am fairly sure was a telescopic baton. He didn't extend it, but he was holding it in the open and kind of playing with it in his hands.
If they're legal, maybe I should look into getting one for myself, as I am frequently in the areas that are being targeted.

Just heard from Superintendent-meteorologist Garry Skilling-McCarthy that the extended forecast shows very hot temperatures afflicting the North Side every Saturday until August 20th. Thus, every beach north of 12th St is to be closed on the above days.
Six paragraphs in the 'Chicago Breaking News' is a description of the offenders, which is very disappointing since its from the Northwestern University Police alert and not via any reporting from the less than stellar 'Sam Zell owned' Chicago Tribune.

Since you're obviously not a runner, let me fill you in--the temps have been so low lately, that a sudden change to high temps and humidity requires more time to acclimate the body to the sudden stresses it undergoes while running.

I cant speak for my fellow Officers but I know I have stopped "Good" citizens like yourself in the past who have carried a concealed handgun and I have never arrested or taken the gun away. I believe in the right to bear arms.
Now if you should need to use that gun to protect yourself and you are legitimately defending you or you families lives you should not have a problem. The CCSA will not prosecute you. The worst that would happen is your gun would be confiscated.

Chicago Govnmt. can learn by example; just look at other areas of the country that have well manned police depts. and legal CCW. Also, I wouldn't necessarily despair about your new Commander, yet. Yeah, he may really be a shitty political hack, but you can't be sure at this point. Most managers keep their heads down when they start a new job, until they can figure out the lay of the land. He has to learn what's going on with his co-workers in the department. A lot of people get into management because they are dicks who want the power at any cost, but a lot of them get into management because they believe they can do a better job and are leaders of men. In the mid 80's to early 90's, Miami had a similar problem. The European tourists were getting lost trying to navigate from the highway (I-95) to the beaches. They would get off at the wrong exits and stop at gas stations in Liberty City etc and get redirected to streets where they would be robbed and murdered. Miami refused to acknowledge anything for years. That severly deterred tourism. Now, you see exit signs with a picture of the smiley sun to let you know its safe to exit in Miami. The Mayor had better get this problem under control quick, it's making national headlines.
To all the Officers who responded to the citizen's request about what action you would take if you caught him CCW, and responded in favor of the citizen-THANK YOU. Amazed to see a rather long story about teen mobs downtown, starting on page 1 of the paper Tribune this morning. Wow, who knew this stuff was going on? Oh, wait, I did, and anyone else who reads SCC or at least has been listening to WLS radio for the past week. And again, the story brazenly mentions things that happened over the past several months, as though the paper ever reported them at the time!
Updated story on Tribune site this morning shows over 400 comments, except you can't read any of them now. Older version I saved link from yesterday still shows many up to 7am today.
By the way, what should I read into the biggest page 1 Tribune story about the new police chaplain? Is that the paper extending an olive branch to you police officers? Or is that just an attempt at distraction?

Wish I'd been able to save one from a twentysomething African-American woman who said (I paraphrase) that she's outraged at the situation and the mobs must be stopped. Thanks, I couldn't remember the conviction. I do remember that he died when the family house in Sauganash caught fire. He was left all alone in there on some kind of stipend from the family, life of Riley. Crackhead who lit the wrong thing.

I visited North Ave beach over the weekend. Police were very present with searches galore of coolers and ticket writing for open alcohol galore. The mounted unit was out with 3 as well as foot and bike patrols. Nothing major happened and I was there from 11am until 3 pm.
Non-LEO and questioned the cooler searches without PC. I'm guessing they can play the Homeland Security card to keep the public safe card?

it's impractical and not funny.
If you see these large groups walking around and you want to call 911, just call, give the description and say you smell pot. The cops will come pretty quickly. That will give the cops probable cause to stop them.
I am not happy that these wildings are occurring. But, as I have no choice about their occurrence, I am happy that it is happening in the bastions of liberalism known as Chicago's private elite universities. When I go to NW hospital announcing that I am an officer, they send security personnel to escort me wherever I go. Civilians can come and go as they choose. Fuking unbelivable. Not a tale but my own experience.
