New Side Job - Recycling!

  • The warehouse at 940 W. Exchange should be one of the most secure municipal buildings in Chicago.

Not only is it home base for city crews that install and maintain security systems at local government facilities, it’s outfitted with surveillance cameras and an alarm.

So how could four spools of copper-lined industrial power cable that weigh more than 1,000 pounds apiece disappear in March in a still-unsolved theft?

We have an idea exactly how - and so do other people:
  • Turns out the building’s alarm system was on the fritz at the time, and many of the security cameras weren’t working, several sources told the Better Government Association.

What’s more, the cable (worth at least $20,000) had been left out — and wasn’t kept inside a locked storage area as it was supposed to be, the sources said.

The city’s inspector general now is investigating, and exploring the possibility that the heist was an inside job, the sources said.

Um....duh?

This isn't the only theft of wire though. We've gotten word from a couple people who know and it seems that a bunch of subcontractors are in the habit of leaving spools of this stuff on trailers at job sites - overnight and unsecured. And then everyone is "surprised" when the trailer is found empty the next day.

Anyone want to bet on what kind of connections might be uncovered if someone actually started poking around? Maybe a few "Outfit" connections?

Here is a puzzle to solve.

Chicago Police Department is budgeted for approximately 13,000 officers.
They are currently at about 7,000
Where is the rest of the money going?
Why can't they hire to fill the gap which they are already budgeted for?

Another question, there are apparently several hundreds of former officers wanting to come back to work from their leave of absence but are all in limbo. Why can they start re-treading these trained officers?

Anyone with insight please respond.

OT:7 arrested in mob action attack at Northwestern
About 8:30 p.m., the victim had parked his motor scooter outside the building on Chicago Avenue, a little west of Lake Shore Drive, when about 15 to 20 males--believed to be in their mid-to-late teens--approached him, according to the alert, which categorized the incident as an attempted robbery. One of the males in that group threw a baseball at the victim's face and knocked him to the ground, the alert stated.

Uncle Luke, Co-Founder Of Urban Beach Week, No Longer Attends Event

MIAMI (CBS4) – Although he was one of the early pioneers of Miami Beach’s Memorial Day hip hop extravaganza, even Luther Campbell says he no longer makes his way to South Beach during that weekend because it’s become too rowdy.

This year the (Memorial Day) event ended in a barrage of gunfire. One person was killed in the melee that saw a dozen cops firing more than 100 rounds at the driver of a car that allegedly attempted to run down five police officers.

A few years ago, while working a part time job security for the park district, I was asked to do a security survey of a garage that housed park district tradesman on the north side ( I had experience doing this in the military ). I uncovered massive theft and misuse of govt. property by the tradesman to include trucks, tools and expensive equipment, large amounts of copper piping and electrical supplies. I turned the report in to the park district head of security ( a CPD lieutenant detailed to the parks who later went on to gold star status who was also the head of the Hombergs). He read it and put it in his desk drawer and nothing was ever done about the garage. They wanted to know, but did not want to know. The tradesman were doing a lot of private work on the weekends using park district trucks tools and parts. Everyone had keys to the garage and the alarms were turned off. The garage manager knew everything. I guess things have not changed much in 20 years.

Classic example of "Carry and Conceal Firearms Law" for all private law abiding citizens of Chicago.

Just think if that Honest, law abiding, minding his own business citizen were to protect himself and let off a couple of rounds in the chest of the bad guy who threw a hard league baseball at the victims face and knocking him down so his buddies can kick the shit out of him. We would have shitbirds mama with their 8th grade picture on TV.

Then again, Chicago Mayors tend NOT to follow the laws of the United States Constitution of the 2nd Amendment!

Chicago Mayors, tend to enforce their own home rule made up laws which should be banned and are illegal!

You missed the best part:

As it stands now, Campbell complained, Miami Beach officials are running the risk of creating the perception that blacks are not welcome on the Beach.

“What I am worried about is the backlash,” Campbell said. “You have cities around America where African Americans know that they are not wanted because of some racial statement or some sort of ordinance that was put in to prevent African Americans from coming to that city. I don’t want that to happen to my town.”

Dear Curious,

Your numbers are off.

The CPD is not 6,000 short of budgeted strength but is over 1,000 officers short. The "money" does not go anywhere. It is simply imaginary money included in the budget that is not spent. The City operates at a deficit so this so called "extra" money doesn't really exist. The budget includes as "income" such nebulous income sources as union concessions not yet negotiated.

That is like including future lottery winnings and money expected to be found on the sidewalk in your family's projection of future earnings.

If you were also to include a couple of Ferraris and vacations to the south of France that offset the expected lottery winnings the little lady might scream for her red Ferarri because it is "in the budget."

If there were such a thing as a "correct" set of books, it would be interesting to see a comparison between budgeted amounts and actual expenditures.

But since you will never see true figures come out of City Hall we will never really know.

Just shut up and keep paying.

Mob Action, like in this instance, that inflicts bodily harm, is a class 4 felony. However it is more likely that the lesser Class C misdemeanor was the charge. And it is ever more certain that the charges will be tossed the first time up.

You can bet your next retro paycheck that our illustrious Cook County Felony Review would never approve felony mob action charges against the youthful thugs.

Anyone in 018 care to illuminate us on which charge was used? Class 4 Felony or Class A or C misdemeanor?

They are currently at about 7,000

OK, first off we are budgeted for 13,500 SWORN. That includes detectives, sgts., lts., capt., exempts. Anyone sworn with power of arrest. It is NOT the number of officers with the job title code of 9161. That being said, run the numbers. We are short somewhere in the area of 1200. I won’t make any comments on how these people are deployed. That is for you to form your own opinion. It appears that based on percentage, the most depleted rank is that of lieutenant. They are about 19% understaffed.
As to the budget: Just because the department is budgeted for 13,500 SWORN, it does not mean that the cash is there to pay for these people. The budget is based on revenue projections from all revenue sources. If one of these sources does meet the budgeted amount, then there is a deficit. The current budget is technically in the red. It is only being balanced by using monies that are in reserves. There is NOT enough income to meet the current expenses. We are living off of our savings. With that in mind, every dollar that is saved by not hiring, not promoting, cutting overtime or not making purchases means that we have to dip less into our savings. Although you end up sacrificing services, and in the case of police and fire maybe safety as well, it is a good fiscal move from an accounting point of view. So every police officer that is not hired makes the big budget hole a little smaller.

Not when you end up paying millions in settlements, it doesn't. I think the good citizens have every right to sue and a fair amount of basis to win, when the city deliberately understaffs its first responders and people's lives are comromised.
