"Heat" Story Goes National
CBS 2 was linked by The Drudge Report. Drudge pulls in a few million hits a day, so this is a rather big deal. We'd also like to point out something we and most of our readers missed during this entire debacle, but Channel 2 didn't:
- If the heat was the reason for closing the beach, why did every other beach in Chicago remain open during the supposed emergency?
Was there some localized weather phenomenon that was unique to North Avenue? Some confluence of superheated air that usually emanates in the vicinity of politicians but somehow gathered in the area of 1600 North and LSD and struck down so many fine citizens on their bicycles?
For an answer, we reached out to renowned weatherman extraordinaire, the only meteorologist to be awarded a Department Commendation by J-Fled, WGN's Tommy Skilling. Tommy had this to say:

I'm on vacation in Ireland but have been following this story all week. The outright lies by the new superintendent and by Rahm are troubling. I was hoping that in a situation like this they would both be man enough to admit there is a serious gang problem in this city, and say what they are going to be doing about it, not LIE right out of the gate and pretend nothing bad was happening.
I want to know what they city is going to do to combat this growing problem - one that is going to plague us all summer. Brushing the problem under the rug will only work for so long. Daley got away with tiptoeing around the Michigan Ave violence so as to not scare away his precious tourists that he cared so much more about than the citizens here. I'm hoping that Rahm will take a different path.
Personally, I wish the military would round up every last gang banging piece of shit in this city and dump them on a deserted island somewhere to let them start the civilization they seem to want. I worked the old Summer Mobile twice. It was a break from the routine, but I cannot say we always had fun. One of the things we did do was post a wagon on the bridge going to North Ave beach and confiscated the beer and wine in the collers. The wagon filled up quickly. The problem we had at the end of the night is, "What do we do with all of this beer?" It sure kept the problems down to a minimum

One TV station tonight showed a pattern of pepper-spray assaults and robberies developing in that area...
Mounted and other units much in evidence at North Avenue Beach today, breaking up clusters of stupid behiavior...
The department has pulled out all of the stops to fight the heat this weekend. All Safe City officers as well as tact teams from 001/018/003 and 021 all sent to the beach. Per Chief Williams email to the deputy. He can't begin to express the supt concern that NO incidents occure at the beached this weekend. The Chief goes on to advise all DC and Commanders to "deploy resources appropriately" to ensure no incidents take place. And we thought there was NO gangbanging at the beaches. NONE were his exact words. And as we speak, one shot in the head at 43rd street and LSD (beach side). Gmac is gna be pissed!!

The department has pulled out all of the stops to fight the heat this weekend. All Safe City officers as well as tact teams from 001/018/003 and 021 all sent to the beach. Per Chief Williams email to the deputy. He can't begin to express the supt concern that NO incidents occure at the beached this weekend. The Chief goes on to advise all DC and Commanders to "deploy resources appropriately" to ensure no incidents take place. And we thought there was NO gangbanging at the beaches. NONE were his exact words. And as we speak, one shot in the head at 43rd street and LSD (beach side). Gmac is gna be pissed!!

Those historically black beaches weren't the object of the domestic terrorism on Memorial Day. I would expect your 'plan' to be implemented, just in reverse.

Funny yesterday listening to zone 6 7&8 districts,at about 1500 hours no cars available a off duty sergeant needing help no cars,the dispatcher though was cook she said "I don't care about all the school closings the sergeant needs help the schools can wait!" Don't know her name but that was the best ever!
I'd be happy to carry a gun as a law abiding citizen. Since I legally cannot, I avoid the Lakefront, Watertower, North Ave stores, Oak street and now Lakeview for pepperspray attacks. Although I wish I could go for walks in my neighborhood, I do not go out at night. I feel quarantined in my own home. It makes the taxes I pay the city so worthwhile.
I read SSC blog for my news about street safety. As depressing as it is to read, you may be saving my life by providing a forum for people to tell the real story of what goes on in the city.
Thanks SSC! Keep telling us what the media and city govn't will not.

There's a strong police presence at the beaches in South Boston today, following the Memorial Day weekend flash mob wildings we had here.
There were eight squads parked at Carson Beach this afternoon with many officers on foot in bright green vests. Mostly State Police (who have jurisdiction), but also Boston PD.
There was also one squad parked at Castle Island along with a mounted police truck. Plenty of other cars in the parking lot, patronizing the restaurant Sully's.
The beaches are pretty empty otherwise, however, as it's been really cool here today in the upper 50's to low 60's.

I've heard the stories. I've been stopped for 8 times in 25 years in Wisco and always got a pass. I was not being a dick, dissing a fellow officer like he isn;t the real police, was not drunk to the point of being a bigger asshole. The only time I was ever treated badly was by one guy just north of the border; and even he gave me a pass with a very big attitude. Over the years I've run into quite a few in bars or whatever. They have some bad asshole cop stories themselves. When my kid was 17, he got a pass, but the cop told him he was going to tell me, and he dropped by the house.
