Officer Hit by Car - Driver Shot

  • Police responding to a burglary in progress shot a man, who then allegedly hit an officer with a car he was driving near the United Center Sunday morning.

Police shot a man about 6:45 a.m. in the 2000 block of West Monroe Street, according to police News Affairs Officer Michael Sullivan. Sullivan said the incident occurred as police were responding to a burglary in progress call.

After the officer shot the man, that man then allegedly hit an officer in the leg with the vehicle he was driving, police said.
Even the "slow" districts are seeing a seeming upsurge in attacks on police, especially with vehicles. Be extra careful out there this summer - slow don't mean a thing with a two-thousand pound hunk of metal and plastic bearing down on you.

No matter how well you shoot and how large a caliber weapon you carry, you still can't beat a moving car. GTFOOTW of it.

Officers have been killed in "slow" districts as well as "busy" districts. Anything can happen anywhere. Be careful out there.

012's faster zone brother to the south, 009, is getting crazy. I would venture to say it's up there as one of the busiest districts in the city these days. God be with all of us officers this summer.

I am betting some or many of these cases are people panicing and hitting the gas when someone points a gun at them. Maybe not deliberate. Just some kind of reaction they can't really control.

You can't stop a multi-ton vehicle with a pea shooter real quick.

No matter what it is not worth being dead over. Get out of the way first.

I don't think you were there, were you? Maybe there was no time to get out of the way. Who are we to judge? I am just thankful the officers are ok and that they can go home to thier families at the end of the night.

I'm betting that you are an asshole. Did the city pay for your defense lawyer education? You are not the Police. If you were you would keep your flytrap shut because you were not there and don't know the full set of circumstances. DipShit!!!

009??? ummmm, ok... if you say so junior. I suppose that the only place you have worked in your career is 009. Try working in 015, 011, 025, 008, 007 or 005 006 in the summer. I first started my career in 005 and it gets buck wild in the summer. then I went to 006, sos where we would be in 007, 011, 15 etc and yes, sometimes 009 but when I left sos and went to 009 it was like a breath of fresh air. Im not bashing 009 at all. I loved it there, plenty to do but also alot of good places in 009 to go to stay out of trouble. When it comes to the buisiest districts in the city 009 may be in the top ten but it would be a suprise. all of the ones I already noted are way more busy that 009 24/7. some of those districts are so damn busy that its constant jobs all day long. 8, 5, 25 or 006 you will never stop getting jobs no matter what watch you work. I loved 009, great people and plenty of stuff to do but definatly not the busiest in the city or close to it.

Does not really matter if I was there or not. It's still not worth being dead over. Self protection comes first. Shooting at a car coming at you is not a high percentage thing.

I've yet to see the powers that be explain why only 8 of our 25 districts received manpower from TRU/MSF.
Shouldn't patrol as a whole have benefitted from this additional manpower? I'm not saying every district should have received the same amount of manpower but every district should have received some extra manpower.
Media, Aldercreatures anyone care to ask the tough questions?

Story details are vague but it reads that the PO was struck AFTER the subject driving the car was shot. Regardless, your comment makes me pray you're not the Police.

OOPS!!! I was just minding my own business and accidentally ran from the Police! I didn't mean too. I just got so scared when I saw them approaching with their guns out, my foot hit the pedal! And in my panicked state I almost hit that poor cop! Man I'm not even sure what happened. Geeze, I sure hope I didn't hit anyone. Maybe I should go back and make sure everybodie's ok.

See how ridiculous that sounds?

Anybody not on shit, doesn't react by panicking when someone, I mean, the Police, show up with weapons drawn. A reasonable person stops, and doesn't do anything stupid enough to FORCE an Officer to decide he needs to pull the trigger. Like driving a vehicle in his direction.

Armchair desk quarterbacking? Getting out of the way isn't always an option...WHEN YOU'RE GOING AFTER THE BAD GUY.
I commend the officers for doing more than what was 'expected' of them. I wasn't there, but have been in such situations where dude wants to get away and "we" won't let him. That's the way it's done, like it or not, sometimes we have to take action.
It's not safe anymore anywhere, dude is all over this city.
These officers chose to respond to a call and arrived quick enough to find a fleeing felon rather than lay low as it's done in some districts.
These officers did more than GTFOOTW - the bad guy didn't.
Good work 012 Officers - you didn't let the bad guys go so they can burglarize my neighborhood tomorrow, or wildly flash mob the lakefront this weekend.

It does matter if you were there or not because this shooting was nothing like it is in you imagination; which is where you obviously did most of your policing.

012 is really a fringe district now, mmostly slow calls-wise, but still has plenty going on; ABLA still has plenty of mutts, Touhy-Herbert Park and St. Stevens Complex loaded with GDS, Pilsen still active with hispanic gangs(nothing like it used to be ) a lot of robberies in the University area, and alot of car burglaries, theft and res burgs on the north end. Certainly not a place to let your guard down... be safe wherever you are assigned and don't get complacent!!!

No shit, 2 high-profile robberies reported on the news along Roosevelt and on 13th-Racine, isn't that the ABLA area? gee big surprise huh? Now they are doing wilding robberies on the buses..
