- Four men are dead and at least eight other people were wounded in shootings throughout the city this weekend, police said.

I love Chicago. Every day it becomes more and more like Haiti. Neighborhoods all over the city are becoming more like territory controlled by warlords. i heard from someone on scene that gang enforcement actually grabbed the guy. but i did not confirm that. and also every gold star was jumping on the radio trying to take control of the situation. nobody could communicate. but u are right. i was hoping mean gene okerlund would would put the mike up to him.

Well to be fair, GEU monitored a flash message given by the 018 District unit and they spotted the guy trying to leave the beach and made the arrest. Look up the arrest report.

Whether you like king Leo or not, the incident in 018 on days DID have something to do with him/his unit. That newsworthy incident, although it was a group effort among foot/bike units, Leo's GEU guys were the ones who grabbed the offender.
The incompetent management in 022 left 6 cars working on the 1st watch for the 03 July. Of the 6 cars one was 10-99 till 0100 hrs. This happens on a regular basis on the first watch. They better thank God that nothing happened. Soon enough something will and someone IS going to get hurt.
One year ago our block in Albany Park (not far from Hibbert school) was like a war zone with BIG fireworks from late June through the 4th. Setting one off in the alley behind our condo at 4:00 AM really seemed to amuse some shithead.
THIS year is is...MUCH quieter. Far fewer explosions and they are much smaller; mainly bottle rockets and firecrackers.
I think the difference is that ONE family of CPS's finest has moved off to wherever they move to. Amazing how so few people can so screw up the quality of a block.

A little gray-haired wisdom to all. First of all drive carefully and soberly and make sure all your documents are up to date.
If stopped, you know the drill, interior lights on at night, hands on the wheel and all that and always be courteous.
DO NOT GO FLASHING YOUR STAR/ID OUT THE WINDOW WHERE A DASHBOARD CAMERA WILL RECORD IT. Discretely show it as you start looking for your license and insurance.
The best line is to ask for professional courtesy, the same as you always gave to every cop you ever met, including a few from (wherever your stopped at).
Stay safe, always pay it forward with professional courtesy because what goes around comes around.

I want to say thanks to the officers on July 2nd who made what looked like an arrest of a flash mob at Illinois and McClurg ct. I think a supervisor had a handgun that he got from one of the gys bag. I saw the officers swarm in an instant and no onenwas hurt. Thanks to you guys my wife and I actually felt safe the whole weekend seeing you guys out there.

Sounded like Beirut in Logan Square and Avondale tonight, from dusk til after midnight. NEVER heard or saw so much of it before.
It doesn't help that the newsreaders glorified it, saying stupid stuff like 'you have to take your fireworks where you can find them, since the city canceled the show' and 'here's another shot of the skyline to the west, with all the personal fireworks shows going on'.
In a city of frame homes and tar roofs, this is just another disaster waiting to happen. Yeah, it's pretty. Until it's deadly. (And don't bitch; I really like fireworks... just not on my roof.)

The victims who lost their lives were all men between the ages of 19 and 25.

Official: Kids with fireworks started extra-alarm Pilsen blaze
July 04, 2011|By Serena Maria Daniels and Cynthia Dizikes | Tribune reporters
"An extra-alarm blaze at a three-story brick building in the city’s Pilsen neighborhood this afternoon apparently was started by children playing with fireworks, fire officials said.
"By about 5:20 p.m., the fire that spread to two nearby buildings from the three-story brick building at 1323 W. 18th St. was under control. An 80-year-old woman was taken in fair-to-serious condition with minor smoke inhalation to University of Illinois at Chicago Hospital after being rescued from the second floor, Fire Commissioner Robert Hoff said at the scene of the fire.
"Hoff said it appears the fire was started by two or three young people, at least one of them a pre-teen, playing with fireworks on a rear porch of 1323 W. 18th Street, and that the fire spread to 1319 and 1317 W. 18th. The children told firefighters that they were playing unattended.
“We wanted to just spread the word and let people know that we think that this fire started as the result of fireworks," Fire Departmetn spokesman Larry Langford said on the scene of the fire.
"At least two of the children suspected of lighting the fireworks, and their family members, declined to comment this evening.
"The way the buildings are constructed close to each other allowed the fire spread quickly to buildings to the east, from 1323 W. 18th, which houses a hardware store on the first floor and apartments above, Hoff said. There was a partial collapse of the first building's attic.
"Firefighters were called to the scene just before 4:30 p.m., and the first firetrucks arrived within three minutes, Hoff said. By then the apartment adjacent to the porch where the fire started was fully involved, Hoff said. About 150 firefighters responded, officials said..."
