Wait a Minute...

  • Hot and steamy conditions didn't keep people from enjoying outdoor activities Saturday, from Ribfest in Naperville to the Crosstown Classic at Wrigley Field.

  • The triple digit heat index didn't keep folks away from two major cultural events: Chinatown Festival 2011 and The Festival of Life in Washington Park...

  • Saturday's soaring temperatures made for perfect beach weather but the Chicago Park District issued swim bans for Montrose and South Shore because of high bacteria levels.
Ah, two beaches closed. And amusingly, this time they blame it on bacteria. After all, you can't really see a bacterium with the naked eye, so it will be easier to blame the entire beach closing on something invisible, rather than the actual cause. We suppose that's the new "heat."

Seems like all the Thugs caught so much "heat" from Memorial Day they decided to stay in the hood.

All beaches open in Whiting, Indiana. Same body of water, even the same general proximity to the beaches they closed up there in Chicago.

I was out at little Whihala Beach just today swinging the metal detector- they weren't having any troubles there with bacteria or what not. People playing in the water, having a ball.

The beaches weren't closed.

Entering the water was prohibited.

Happens every year.

If someone from my family was at a City beach or park today and had a heat related injury, is that grounds for a LAWSUIT because that beach or park was not closed?

I've lived in Chicago for 44 yrs. And the park district has been closing beaches and or swim ban due to high levels of bacteria ever since I can remember.

So this one is probably legit.

I'm just sayin....

Do your duty and take out a seagull. They crap all over the place and bring up the bacteria count. That's what closes the beaches.

Bacteria is an issue close to shore, most often due to fecal contamination. It would take an awful lot of shit to contaminate every beach from here to Whiting.

You're probably right, but you've gotta admit, this would be a pretty clever idea; close two or three beaches every summer weekend and you lower the possibility of something bad happening & bringing bad publicity...

I'm just sayin'.

Went to Naperville rib fest Saturday. Seemed like everyone from the city was there. It was overcrowded couldn't really move around it was so packed. They stopped letting people in at 6pm it was so crowded. 30 minute lines to get some ribs.

Nothing new here, in 2010, Montrose and South Shore Beaches had bacteria levels exceeding government safety standards on at least a fifth of all summer days.

It's all birdshit, really! They go to the shore and get a water sample to check for bacteria. Look out from shore about 100 feet and you see nothing but seagulls flying out over the water pissing and shiting in it.Go beyond the birds and the water will test negative.

The government has finally identified the bacteria infecting our lakefront. It is called the "flashganganimalisticitis bacteria". There is no known cure at this time so be careful!

In the newspaper today statingthat a lot of folks in oursuburbs are not even bothering to come into the city this summer. High cost of buying anything here, way too crowded, and of course the gang problems. Helloooooo Detroit......

The least of your troubles is bacteria on the beach if you live in Whiting, Indiana or Hegewisch. You probably save a ton of cash on lighting since you glow green at night.

I don't know people let's think about this High Bacteria Count stuff for a minute.

Oil companies can blow a hole in an oil rig down in the gulf and it pours millions of gallons a day of oil into the water and we're told no worries it's all okay...it's safe.

Then a handful of seagulls fly's over Montrose beach and takes a dump on the beach and they have been doing it now for how many years and now it's an eco disaster?

Pardon the pun but it doesn't pass the smell test.

Some will argue that it's the high temperatures that makes the water dangerous...

Well let me ask you something.

By how how much does the water temperature increase on this cesspool we call Lake Michigan when we get one or two days of 95 degree heat?

The reported water temp was about 68 degrees the other day..

I mean think about the latent heat effect of water, the mass of the lake, and the time it takes to heat and cool it.

Can the water temp really ramp up one day to cause a bacteria crisis and then all that heat dissipate the very next day and it's all okay?

I no expert but I have my doubts.

If the bacteria is there and is in fact too high I have a problem with a ten degree air temp drop and a two or three degree water temp change making it all better.

Think about it. Something stinks!

Nope. Couple bucks in coins, a Casio digital watch that was still running... and lots of trash. That's about it for that trip in particular.

Oh, and if it's really shit and not them closing down the beaches due to crime issues, why are Chicago beaches so infested with shit while Indiana beaches- on very the same body of water, where the very same birds fly over- are not?

==========

Seriously?

Even if it was thousands of gulls and you rounded all the excrement would it even fill one fifty-five gallon barrel per day?

...and it's more toxic than all the oil leaks from the offshore oil drillers in the past?

Thousands of barrels leaking per day and the experts tell us don't worry it's a lot of water and it all dissipates.

Which story do you want to buy because they both can't be right.

------

Hegewisch in Chicago is turning into a ghetto and will be uninhabitable in less than 10 years, maybe less.

Whiting is actually pretty nice. Very much the little 'all American town'. Clean, safe... Don't mind the refinery at all. Good paying jobs like that is why Whiting is still a pretty good place to live. The only problem is that we're surrounded by bad neighborhoods on all sides.
