And speaking of the Fourth of July, Harvard did a study and here's what they found:
- "Fourth of July celebrations in the United States shape the nation's political landscape by forming beliefs and increasing participation, primarily in favor of the Republican Party," said the report from Harvard.
"The political right has been more successful in appropriating American patriotism and its symbols during the 20th century. Survey evidence also confirms that Republicans consider themselves more patriotic than Democrats. According to this interpretation, there is a political congruence between the patriotism promoted on Fourth of July and the values associated with the Republican party. Fourth of July celebrations in Republican dominated counties may thus be more politically biased events that socialize children into Republicans," write Harvard Kennedy School Assistant Professor David Yanagizawa-Drott and Bocconi University Assistant Professor Andreas Madestam.
Their findings also suggest that Democrats gain nothing from July 4th parades, likely a shocking result for all the Democratic politicians who march in them.

Chicago has to be the only major US city with no Independence Day celebration at all. But they pull out all the stops for Puerto Rican Fest and Cinco de Mayo and Mexican Independence Day on September 16th.

I found it so interesting that Joe Biden came to Chicago to address the Teachers convention. He made Republicans look like real bandits taking away teachers rights and money. Wait a minute....Didn't our own Rahm..THE DEMOCRAT FROM THE OBAMA WHITE HOUSE...just trash the 4% raise for our own teachers? YES. Isn't it Island Boy Brizzard who wants to give teachers longer days, make visits to students homes in the ghetto, and get raises only if HE thinks they deserve one? YES. As a private citizen reader, the first poster is on the right track. I will always celebrate my independence memorialized in the Constitution of this country by its founding fathers. I will always fight against successor governments regardless of political parties who attempt to denegrate the documents, intents and wishes of the founding fathers and more importantly, the very idea of a free and independent nation of people. We have seen what has happened to this city, then the state and now the country when people allow political parties to get in the way of facts. Thank you to ALL who serve the citizens of this still great country and always think about those in quiet moments who have given their lives for us or have been severly injured in their service. May God continue to bless this nation of individuals who create their own destiny with free will.

All personell in units that are "not subject to bidding process" give up all rights to scheduling and furlough selection. If your assignment is not open to bid WHY DO YOU GET ANY CONTRACT PROTECTION AT ALL... YOU ALREADY SOLD YOUR DUMBASS SOUL TO THE DEVIL..OR RAHM OR WHOEVER.
That way they can detail all the unit hacks to the districts for the summer months on necessary watches.

I miss those days also. Bosse was strict but fair and likeable guy. He wouldn't lie to your face like the nitwit in charge of swat now. I don't think I've ever seen him lose his cool and yell at a officer. If you messed up he would tell you to find somewhere to go and that was the end of it no grudge held. If one of his guys were involved in a shooting on or off duty he would show up and handle the whole scene to take care of his officer, he would show up even when he was off the clock. Of course he would put a slip in but the point is he showed up when he didn't have too. I really miss the lot parties! They were fun and comical.

Have you ever wondered what happened to the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence?
Five signers were captured by the British as traitors,and tortured before they died.
Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned.
Two lost their sons serving in the Revolutionary Army;another had two sons captured.
Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or hardships of the Revolutionary War.

Until both Dems or Repubs cut the spending on the Programs and Services, neither are a good party. I agree the Repubs seem a little more tolerable especially after this administration but the way they have gone after government pensions, misrepresenting how much our pensions are worth, I will be hard pressed to vote for either. I know it is all about the votes but why is it so hard to say ahhh....time's up....you have 6 months to get a job.....and your housing voucher is done in 6 months too.....also,if you are not a citizen . you have no more housing, medical or free schooling. America was founded on the GREAT premise that our RIGHT to be FREE is a GOD-GIVEN right, pre-ordained by our Creator so that we each, as humans who each possess an Eternal Soul, a piece of God, can fulfill our destiny without undue government interference. Consider myself a conservative but also a peacenik. Spent a tour in Vietnam in the USMC- saw enough. Love this country but we should pull out of Afghanistan,Iraq and forget about Libya.
We have 50,000 troops in Germany, 30,000 in Japan. Why? These countries should be able to defend themselves. Why should we pay for it.

Maybe OT, but since you brought up the fireworks, I'd just like to take the opportunity to thank you all for doing such a fine job of upholding the ban on fireworks in the city. At least 30 years ago when I was a kid there was some restraint, since we knew if we made too much of a show you folks would stop by to pick up some "party favors" and drop them off for the kids. (Everyone who grew up in the city knew that cop kids had the best fireworks.)
Thanks for providing a nice quiet evening at home. And for keeping the revenue for illegal fireworks from going to the bangers.
(And yes, I do wonder how honor students have no problem finding money for fireworks but can't pay their bills on time, buy clothes that fit, and tutors.)

It's poetic justice that a Democrat town like Boston gives the lie to these professors' "research", right in their own front yard. I bet they have to scurry away every year to "The Cape" to save themselves from succumbing to such patriotic "polarization."
Consider myself a conservative but also a peacenik. Spent a tour in Vietnam in the USMC- saw enough. Love this country but we should pull out of Afghanistan,Iraq and forget about Libya.
We have 50,000 troops in Germany, 30,000 in Japan. Why? These countries should be able to defend themselves. Why should we pay for it.

Uh, 'John', we're not in Germany or Japan to defend THEM; we're there to maintain a presence for our OWN benefit and purposes. Eyes and ears, a convenient airfield, diplomacy or whatever they call the CIA these days...
And, as for Libya, etc., ditto, but more critical.

Naperville still has a 4th of July celebration.
Chicago has to be the only major US city with no Independence Day celebration at all. But they pull out all the stops for Puerto Rican Fest and Cinco de Mayo and Mexican Independence Day on September 16th.
Hell, they even name the high schools here after past presidents of Mexico (Benito Juarez) and Puerto Rican baseball players. (Roberto Clemente)

Evidently you've never heard of Curie high school.
Why would Democrats have a fireworks show if it was counter to their own political interests? Don't they know that being a sanctuary city just isn't enough! I wish I would have studied at Harvard so I too would have been able to discern such nuanced trends that affect the political landscape.

This reminds me very much of a piece Paul Harvey used to do on the radio for the Fourth; you realized the terrible price the Founding Fathers paid for their actions.

Because they were brutal war mongers who attacked us in an attempt to take over the world and that's the price they pay for defeat. Now we have convenient bases for world wide deployment when we need it.
