Charges Dropped?

What the hell is this?
  • Attempted murder charges were dropped Tuesday by Cook County prosecutors against a 27-year-old man charged last month with wounding two Chicago police officers in a shootout in a West Side alley.

The charges fell through even through the two officers, [...], had identified Daniel Jones as the gunman in police lineups.

A gun that matched the description and caliber of the weapon used in the shooting was found in an abandoned home a few doors away from Jones’ home, authorities had said after his arrest.

Prosecutors were vague in explaining why the charges against Jones were dropped, but a law-enforcement source said a new witness and physical evidence excluded Jones as the gunman.
They ID'ed the offender and located the weapon, right?

it took 70 hrs and a complete recanvass of a crime scene the following day to approve charges for a shit head who fired off a round at the police in 008. When asked what the problem was, ASA's said "when Chicago Police stop lying, we will approve charges". And apparently, that came straight from the top.

Limit of 5 poeple off per night even though there are so many people on that watch ther are not enuf radios to go arounfd and some people are being detailed to cover 016 because they are so short over there. 25 mans extra beats every night like 2516 2526 2536 2549 2506a 2596b etc. and still he denys time to the troops!!! Why??

Why would this SOB do something like this? Oh, yeah....I know why...He has never worked patrol in his career. He has always been givern every good spot in this department. Narcotics, Detecive Division merit promotion after merit promotion all the way....USELESS PRICK

That said, I sure hope the ASA's met with the victims and discussed the rationale for dropping the charges. If not, shame on them. And eventually Alvarez needs to explain this one to the voters.

I'll cut them a little slack because I think if they got the wrong guys then it does us no good to give up on finding and nailing the right ones. But this wheelgunner's patience is not unlimited.

Read the form. The WC is not vouching for the person. The form is a verification that the person is a chicago police officer employed by the city of chicago, not that they are a good guy or not a psycho.

The PO had his ID, star, and FOID card. Why is that not enough?? Did he need to provide a resume and recommendations too?

The WC is a stroke for not signing that.

Why aren't officers picketing Alvarez's house in River Forest? Time for same "political action tactics" that reverends and community activists use. Stage a protest, call the media, maintain your cool and stay on message. Comments on a blog site or insufficient.

Can someone explain the plain white t-shirt look now worn by most black low-income men? It's so commonplace that it seems to be a political statement. I'm assuming the new fashion is to make descriptions more difficult, though I've noticed many media outlets are now identifying supposed race of crime perpretators.

OT: 16 district tact Lt.who is acting WC would not sign a firearm purchase form for a PO from another district on the grounds that "I don't know you." even though the PO presented a valid cpd, and foid card. Under this logic, if an outside unit comes in with an arrest. Will he also not approve the arrest since, he won't know them either? Bird brain bosses, who were never the police. Some leadership.

That old gas-bag should have retired years ago. Makes everyone in the Tact office miserable. All the good sgt's left or were dumped years ago because they refused to cover for his "dollies" who did what they wanted, refused to work details, etc. He must have some big juice to survived through so many commanders.

8/17/2011 05:40:00 PM

Yeah, you're still pissed because the Lt. dumped you. How do you get dumped from 16's tact. team? By being more of a dog than the rest of them. And now you beat up the Lt. who saw through your bull shit. Nice.

Write him an ANOV and move on. Watch your COMSTAT numbers. There's other stuff to be dealing with. And if you guys weren't wearing those black vest covers in the first place this never would have happened.

SORRY rookie....you are showing your lack of time and knowledge. CCG was made for Tommy Byrne, by Tommy Byrne. TB back-doored the department and had this invented. maurer went insane

8/17/2011 04:56:00 AM
yes, i believe u are right. t byrne went straight to the mayor on this and daley signed off on it. you rarely saw tommy byrne's face cause it was so far up daley's ass they had to call CFD squad 1 and a CTA wrecker to pull him out.

8/17/2011 06:56:00 PM

All of the above 100% accurate with this caveat. Even then Supt. Terry Hillard wasn't aware of this self-promoted command change until he was ordered by Da' Mare to put it into effect.

It is the way of todya's thinking for the politicians and the judges. reward the jagoffs and punish the good guy. But don't forget the G8 and NATO is coming, paybacks are a bitch. When the jagoffs want to cross the line and crash the summit, just remember they get rewarded, look the other way and then just say oh I didn't see them. Sorry. That could be fun

I would be a little suspicious myself of a person walking into a station asking for such a signature.....why can't he get his own boss to sign it, or maybe just wait the 3 days? There are a lot of people on this job who shouldn't be on this job, or any job for that matter.

8/17/2011 05:45:00 PM

Finally someone with some sense... I wouldn't sign one of those for a copper I couldn't vouch for.

8/17/2011 11:12:00 PM<<<

As long as the Officer is Full Duty and not on a Domestic Can't Have a Gun Bond or something like that. (Even though the purchase forms ask those questions.) It just may be a matter of convenience, but you are asking the Boss to take a chance.

SPECIAL EMPLOYMENT requests should go through their own Watch Commanders as some of them have productivity requirements.

TRAINING REQUESTS should go through their own Watch Commanders as that may have scheduling issues.

Stay Safe, it is always better to do things with your own Boss.

too the w/c in 016 that wouldnt sign the gun form...all you are signing off on is that the person is a sworn officer ..its just a certifying statement. loser. learn your job "Boss". what, you couldn't determine if the p.o. was a CPD cop.?

8/18/2011 12:33:00 AM

Learn your own fuckin' job....does the form say "get any Lieutenant to sign it?" or does it say something like maybe "get your own Lieutenant to sign it?"

Whose side are they on ?

8/17/2011 07:42:00 AM

NOT THE POLICE OFFICER'S... never have been, never will be..."

Why do you say this? State's Attorney's can do their job best by working with and supporting the Police. All of those whom I know (over 21 years) do this. I have only seen two or 3 ASAs who had disdain or contempt for the Police, and they became defense attys after only a year or 2 as an ASA. That's Appeals or Traffic Court.

Really?? Here's a hypothetical situation on why he tried to have someone else sign it. Copper lives in 016 and works far south. Maybe he's on midnights, even afternoons for that matter and it's his RDO. He wants to go buy a gun but forgot to have his W/C sign it on his Friday. So instead of driving completely across the city to have it signed in his district and then all the way back and then to wherever he's buying it from he goes to the District he lives in to save about 2 hours of travel time. Is that so wrong? People need to lighten up.

With all the evidence and witnesses, this truly is bullshit. This shows that the ASA's office don't give a rats ass about us. I swear I hope I work a case where one of these jackasses is the offender. I'll make sure every news agency is present when they are led out in cuffs.

Maybe Anita went to Hawaii again and she wants on hold until she can show her compassion for the police by having him charged when she can get in front of the cameras.

Some evidence can't be ignored. If it is, the ASA's are true idiots.

WRONG!. Dumb fuck, it's a sworn statement that says hes a P.O. and that the purchase is exclusively for official use. It's not to be used for the purpose of personal purchase and to avoid the 3day waiting period.
I agree with the Lt. and I'm just a career P.O.
BTW, what that 'boss' can't determine , right away, is if that CPD cop is in good standing. It's called CYA, and apparently by all the civil suits, a lot still haven't learned that.
