No 5B Furloughs Next Year

Someone in the comment section spotted this at the Sergeants website:
  • After meeting with the department, there will be no 5B furlough selections next year. The city is invoking its emergency operations clause for the G-8 summit that is scheduled for next May.
We looked up the word "emergency" in the dictionary:
  • A serious, unexpected, and often dangerous situation requiring immediate action.
We don't think you can define this as an "emergency" seeing as how it's about nine months away, so there's nothing "unexpected" about it. "Dangerous" might be a stretch, too, given the lack of evidence on the ground at this point (yes, we know how these things go and agree it will probably be a disaster...we're talking about the legal threshold though.) Aren't there some sort of contractual repercussions for declaring an emergency though? Especially this far in advance?

They are not prepared, nor will they be, for this event given the current leadership structure in place. This will be a disaster and Rahm (never let a crisis go to waste) will have a field day with it.

Isn't that the same time the police memorial is going on in Washington, D.C.? So family/friends aren't going to be able to make the trip to D.C. to pay their respects? We have lost so many cops in the past 2 years! I hope they at least give time due to P/O's that want to go to the memorial ceremony.

Sometimes your responsibility as a police officer at home, outweigh the ceremonies conducted elsewhere. Our honored slain officers would have understood this.

Say a prayer for them and our military whenever you feel the need to do so, EVEN next May, but realize that, like it or not, you will be needed here in Chicago, where you were hired to "serve and protect" the citizens of Chicago. Real police officers know this. Others will whine and cry and suggest a stint on the medical is appropriate. To them I say GFY! We need a union with some stones. If Pres. Shields had any, he'd be announcing our march on City Hall the week of the G-8 Summit. This would be an informational picket addressing the lack of manpower, the unfunded pension and the lack of a contract. The union needs to play hardball or else we're going to get walked all over. We need to BEG for a " Forensic Audit" to highlight where the dollars were stolen that were earmarked to keep us fully staffed. Let's see what our new President is made of.

Sooooo....the City is saying no 5B furloughs. Nothing in the Sergeants contract allows them to cancel days off or furloughs (even in an emergency) without paying time and a half. Nothing allows them to say you can't PICK a 5B furlough. So, pick the 5B furlough, and when they cancel your days off, get time and a half for every day you have to work it. If they refuse to allow you to pick it, grieve it immediately (in December) and have the union go through expedited arbitration and we will win the arbitration and they will have to pay you. Oh, and you still get that furlough segment at some other time after 5B. I hear Wisconsin is great in the fall.

Oh, and they have to cancel RDOs before they cancel furlough, so look for a lot of overtime in 5B kids! Check the money box!

Every where this conference has been there has been huge trouble. Let them take this circus somewhere else. We don't need the grief. We certainly don't need another black eye for our image.

This is the time for the Union to confront the City about its criminally negligent manpower issues. If the City declares May 15-22 to be an " Emergency" and furloughs are cancelled due to the lack of manpower, we should be compensated at a pay rate higher than our salary. If the budget allows for 13,500 officers and we are at 8,500 the salary of the missing 4,500 officers should be spread amongst those who are forced to go above and beyond the call of duty in the form of a class action lawsuit.. We have been asked to do so much ,with so little for so long and now we're in a bind. Everyone needs to make their furlough request for the time in question and the F.O.P. needs to do its job and get us some bodies.

You're just as guilty as the rotten cocksuckers who did the dirty deed. Don't deny it bitches! We saw ALL you motherfuckers laughing & running off into the woods together away from the wreckage.

Deflection. Distraction. Slippery syntax, weasel words and overall just a bunch of political grease & doo-doo being spewed from the 5th floor of city hall and the executive suites of 3510

Declaring an emergency nine months in advance? O_o?

Tacit admission that they've been shitting the bull about manpower all these years?

Sheeit! Every district is DOWN 200+ coppers in authorized manpower! Ask anybody with time on the job who can count above ten without taking their shoes off.

These idiots are going through the motions, SCC.

The best they can come up with is continue to aggravate the hell out of The Beat Car Pilots because they really don't have a plan.

The organizational and political stupidity is like blue sky... From everlasting to everlasting, no matter which way you turn.

A skull on a stick can run things better... Probably give better answers at press conferences and comp-stat meetings too.

We hope and pray that it won't be Policemen paying with their lives (Well, fuck... Who are we kidding? Policemen have already been paying with their lives.) when the piper demands payment for the years of neglect, lack of foresight and lack of preparation by city hall & HQ.

I will tell you this about the G8/NATO event next May. We have incredibly talented Officers trying to get everything in order with regards to training. These guys and gals (PO's mind you...) want whats best for us. They create their wish list and send it up the ladder. If it doesnt come down to the PO's, don't blame the Cop's getting it together. One thing MSF did VERY well was train, and that's who's involved with this. Think about what's involved in the aquisition of a training facility, equipment, scheduling. It's a logistical nightmare.

At the very least Ladies and Gentlemen, make sure you have a very good quality vest (3A with plates is strongly suggested), a striker fired pistol (lose those Smith and Wessons, Berettas and Rugers...) and get a quality personal radio, Kenwoods last 3 days on a full charge.

"Sometimes ceremonies conducted here do not outweigh the responsibilities elsewhere."

Do you see how easy that was to make your whole statement false? I did not need to throw random commas here and there throughout my post to make it appear as tho I am being profound.I am guessing by the way you write and how similar it is to the speech patterns of the POTUS that you are either a politician or political police hack. May I suggest "Elements of Style" published by our very own University of Chicago?

The G8 and NATO summit are not my responsibility nor are they Chicago's. Here is a thought. Give these alleged leaders all Iphones and they can facetime each other with all their fascinating plans and ideas that have just been working so fabulously the past decade or two. If they were real leaders they would just postpone a week so American Law Enforcement Officers can honor their dead. But they wont. This president has blown off the National Police Memorial before. It is not like law enforcement was ever a priority with him unless someone was coming through a window near Drexel.

Between my two brothers my sister and myself, we have over a century of service as police officers in this city. My other brother has been a Marine since 1968. He is currently serving in the Middle East as a civilian. We each have our own memories of friends that have died serving this city. Their names are on the wall in Washington D.C.

You have been served.

the pensions are underfunded because were 2,500 + short from putting into the fund. manpower issues means we're freakiing short. they need to admit that we're short, stop paper shuffling and stop lying and hire the cops we're short. seniority and furloughs is all we have on this job and they continualy fuck with that. that's fucked up.

Hearing that McNutty also wants to cut 6th, 7th, 8th period furlos from 7% of unit down to 3% of unit. Also hearing he wants a 5/2 schedule, and on both counts he's claiming "manpower needs" as the reason. Anyone else hear that? Can he do that? Isn't 4/2 in the contract now? Hello FOP? FOP? FOP?

8/19/2011 11:08:00 AM<<<

The 4/2 work week is a target.

If you do not want to go back to the 6/2 work week do not, repeat

DO NOT GO DOWN ON THE AIR "WAITING FOR A CAR", GO DOWN ON A CASE REPORT, WEAPONS CLEANING, SEEING THE W.C. OR ANYTHING BUT NOT DOING NOTHING WAITING FOR A CAR.

McGeneralissimo will not solve the problem by buying enough cars.

Save yourself some effort. Just hand the input officer the pages from the phone book where you got the info.

Contact cards. You young guys think that's being a police officer. The guy doing the input was probably arresting and CONVICTING bad guys when you were in diapers.

Goof.

8/20/2011 01:26:00

My fault. I stand corrected. All you guys that are salty and don't do shit anymore are the real police. Thanks for all the help. By the way its a square card, white in color. They also come in yellow and blue. Maybe if you used it properly an arrest would follow. Oh my fault, using it as a scraper for the jelly that's caked on your vest is probably the most you've done. Look in the mirror. GOOF!!!!!!!

Would that be around the National Law Enforcement Memorial in D.C.? Soooo..no CPD there at all?

8/19/2011 12:13:00 AM

Sometimes your responsibility as a police officer at home, outweigh the ceremonies conducted elsewhere. Our honored slain officers would have understood this.

Say a prayer for them and our military whenever you feel the need to do so, EVEN next May, but realize that, like it or not, you will be needed here in Chicago, where you were hired to "serve and protect" the citizens of Chicago. Real police officers know this. Others will whine and cry and suggest a stint on the medical is appropriate. To them I say GFY! If you don't want to be the police, go find another job since you're probably not going to be worth a shit in combat, anyway.

8/19/2011 06:28:00 AM

Obviously written by someone who has never attended the DC Memorial to Honor Our Fallen.

The G8 Summit was a voluntary host location with agreed upon dates controlled by Obama, et al.

Chicago has a respected reputation as the largest 'voluntary' attendance in DC during Police Week.
'Voluntary', as in... own time and funds to honor those people who didn't volunteer to make that 'ultimate sacrifice' but did so to 'serve and protect.'
They should be honored and remembered.
Go tell the (Gold Star) family surviving members that scheduling a conflicting G8 Summit is more important. Then go ask the powers to be planners why it simply couldn't be pushed back 1 day to accommodate BOTH events and you'll get some rhetorical retort similar to your initial asinine statement.
Beat it, troll!

8/19/2011 05:50:00 PM

Yeah but the only difference is Chicago PD work more than 40 hours a week and over 80 in a two week period. It sucks if they can change ours schedule at whim. Why go through a contract, just do what you want boss!

STFU if you don't know what you're talking about. You cannot be prevented from retiring.

You can't retire with an open CR, so you STFU and learn..

Anyone looking to retire next year, please do not work the G8!!! If you are named in a CR# you will not be able to retire until it is cleared up. Other wise you retire under investigation and that can effect your ability to lawfully carry.

He didn't say you could be prevented from retiring. He said you would retire with an open investigation and this would directly impact your ability to receive a concealed carry permit. This is true.

I'm getting married/honeymoon during 5B next year. How am I going to explain this to my bride? Why should I have to explain this to my bride?

Take your contracts and other documentation to your commander. You'll get your time off.

Problem is, you won't see any of your police friends at your wedding. They won't be able to get time off.

This is one of those things you're not going to really win on. Even when you win, you'll miss out on sharing the day with all your friends.

8/20/2011 01:52:00 PM Not a problem because I don't have any police friends(blue shirts that is)My only friend is the Commander and a few exempts. I don't think they will have a problem getting time off.

The two main reasons that the pension is underfunded is that the city hasnt been putting in their share for over 20 years and that the stock market is down along with interest rates. Being short po's doesnt help, the the other two reasons are the main problem
We wont even go into the Gold Braid
All those extra made up commander spots take from the pension

Is this a joke?

You certainly CAN retire with an open cr. They don't hold you hostage and force you to come to work.

Now, if you do retire with an open cr, the city can cripple your chances of carrying as a retiree. Not that they always do, but they can.

You're right on, brother.
That's why I also posted a response (08/20, 10:03 a.m.)
Thanks to all that have served and sacrificed.
It appears the Nolan family is a prime example of that revered product as... "Chicago's Finest."
Simply put, Thank-You!

Wow, Too too bad they will be adjusting manpower in the districts desks, most desks, not all do absolutely nothing, they sigh, moan and bitch when some poor citizen walks into the station needing a traffic crash report, they yell at senior citizens because they didn't have their vin number, it would be really hard to use that big ass computer and run the plate. and then they cry because they were interrupted in finsihing the magazine they were reading or chatting on phone, the females are the worst, followed by fat ass young men who are afraid of the streets, put older, limited dutiy coppers who have apid their dues on the desk. We also need W/C's with balls, not little peas to controll the lock ups and desk people, the biggest decison on desks are what's for lunch and who gets to duck early today.

You are funny. Salty. Jelly on the vest. That's some funny stuff. I will admit that there have been arrests made from contact card info. But that's still not police work. Making good arrests, testifying in court, getting convictions-that's police work.

Good luck

You are correct. Trying to make a point here. It all adds up in some way shape or form. Make plenty of good arrests, but most bosses don't give a shit. It's where are my contacts, anovs and movers. It's a Damn shame it has come down to this nonsense.
