Teacher Strike?

  • The president of the Chicago Teachers Union said Friday on a radio show that there is a “very high” likelihood that teachers will ask her to take a strike vote, given how angry and disrespected they feel.

But clarifying later to the Chicago Sun-Times, Karen Lewis said she did not predict that teachers will ultimately go on strike, only that the probability is high that members will call for a strike vote.

“People are very upset. People feel disrespected,’’ Lewis told WLS- AM Radio’s Connected to Chicago, which airs at 6 a.m. Sunday.

“We have teachers who have been extremely vilified for political purposes,’’

To strike though, they'll need a 75% vote, thanks to a democratic controlled legislature and a democratic governor.

Sure the only "obligations" the political apparatus in Chicago has is to lecture us on how we are obligated to the ex-mayor and certain aldermen.

Bring Rahm and Island Boy to their knees with a nice 2 or 3 month strike. The teachers are being made the scapgoats for years of patronage and mismangement by the city leaders. Rahm is trying to break all the unions so he has complete control. People like him need to be on top and in control of everyone under them. He will eventually privatize garabge pickup and anything else he can to take jobs away from city workers and beat down the unions. I hope the teachers do go out and teach these arceholes a lesson they need to be taught.

Will these same teachers retain that anger and "disrespected" feeling come election time?? Whether it's the presidential election in '12 or mayoral in '15, I guarantee that this particular issue will all but be totally forgotten by the masses of the wronged.

Newer, bigger and more pertinent smoke, mirrors, diversions and other created dilemmas will push to the forefront of the political landscape, obscuring issues like this time and time again.

Jonah Edelman, the unholy spawn of Marian Wright Edelman and Peter Edelman is responsible for engineering this. He is an "education reform" huckster who is allied with Rahm.

Him and his people came here from Oregon and screened anti-union candidates of both parties to support in 2010.

....... They also realized that Madigan was boss and donated to him.

....... They also hired the best education lobbyists before the teachers could.

Edelman is basically a marxist willing to do what he needs to do to seize power of institutions. Guys like him also know that they can get republicans to cooperate because of their anti-union bias.

FOP better be paying attention.

Google Edelman and you will understand.

Share it with your neighbors to show it isn't all "about the kids".

I hate Democrats but I don't think they went far enough with the teachers. Teachers (those employed by the Gov't) are entitled ASSHOLES!!!!! They should not be allowed to strike!!!! They are so self important that they must be necessary. They want everything and more than the Police. Police are not allowed to strike. The teachers shouldn't be allowed to either.

When teachers actually sacrifice something then maybe I will give them an ounce of respect. The teachers sacrifice NOTHING!!! When they start working Christmas, New Years Eve, or the Summer give me call. FUCK OFF TEACHERS!!!!

And cops aren't vilified for political purposes? Wait for Rham tell us in November that he won't give us our next (and last) step raise. We didn't vote for him as a group, so he's going the Chicago way on us as he does to all of his enemies.

Just like Obama and Eric Holder did and are doing to S&P for doing what they did legally

Yes, support the teachers and then cry the next time you look at your tax bill, the teachers retirement age , their pay and benefits and their salary. Teachers do have a hard job, if they do it correct. I often hear about the long hours they spend at home grading papers and doing lesson plans. I have often said bullshit to this as I spent 12 years in the education field. But, if you want to be a professional, then act like one. Open the schools at 8 am and close them at 5 pm. The teachers should be required to spend that entire time in the school. They will have plentyof time to grade papers and write lesson plans. Then, 2 weeks vacation the first five years and two more after that. The rest of the time they can attend in-service training. Yes, an all of this with no increase in pay. Let them join the rest of the working professionals . I am, frankly, tired of them. The teachers union has never come up with one workable idea on education. They are always " for the children ", but that always means more for them. The unions bribe the crap out of our legislators and the taxpayers become just a source of revenue for their personal ambitions. The children be damned. The public employee landscape is changing. It does not matter at this point who is responsible, what we have now cannot be sustained and tax money cannot solve the problems. Illinois is the worst state in the Union for debt, five times that of California. Things are going to get rough.

Let them strike. It is not as if most of the CPS students are actually getting an education in anything other than being leeches anyway.

Would it change anything significant if the school year was cancelled?

The parents that care about their kids will see to their education regardless of whether CPS is in session or not.

I support the teachers Union on this one. Someone has to put their foot down and put Rahm in his place. The only way to deal with a bully is to confront him. If the teachers Union gives in on this one, he'll be back to take even more.

"Scapegoat" you say? Let me explain who's caught in the middle and disrespected here.

I'm just your typical unconnected person who believed in being self-supporting and self-controlling, but now out of work, pretty much tapped out, so I have no more to give. And anyone else you think you can take it from, you'll still end up making my situation worse. That's one harsh lesson and not exactly being dished up to the mismanagers who deserve it. They pass it all on to us.

Where do I get someone to go out agitating on my behalf? How can I go on strike?

to 2:59pm. Your answer indicates that your idea that the teachers shouldn;t strike has nothing to do with their situation or with the education system itself, and just with the fact that you won't have a baby sitter available. Your child and his/her education should be your primary concern. If the teracher isn't there, stay home and teach little johnnie yoursself. Pool a number of parents in a like situation and take turns teaching the group of kids. What ever it takes. Maybe when parents stop looking at teachers as babysitters and actually suporting and assisting them, the teachers will be able to actually teach the kids rather than taking so much time disciplining them.

Your only concern is a baby sitter and not the quality of education? That is the main difference between public schools and private schools. Parental involvement. The last thing teachers want is a strike. Rather they are just expressing their frustration with a rotten system. I seriously doubt they will ever come close to a strike but this does show the administration they are fed up; similair to a vote of no confidence. Something CPD could never accomplish.

Quit crying already! Teachers shouldn't be able to strike. Teachers are public servants and work for the city and not a private company. Teachers need to stop crying and START teaching. There are a lot of teachers that shouldn't be teaching period. Maybe when you go on strike they will fill your spots with those teachers fresh out college eager to start a career. Before you go on strike just remember what Ronald Reagan did to the Air Traffic Controllers. Rahm can do the same with you!

Teachers are educating our children. The average teacher in Chicago makes $58,000/yr and are now working year round. Streets and San Laborers and Truck Drivers make more money than our teachers.

Please....We need to support these teachers!
