Jobs? What Jobs?

Remember a few weeks ago, Rahm was boasting about the 1,100 jobs he had secured for Chicago over at the Torrence Avenue Ford Plant?

We'll call this one "counting his chickens before they're hatched:"
  • Workers at Ford Motor Co.'s Torrence Avenue plant have overwhelmingly rejected a proposed labor contract that would add 1,100 jobs to the facility.

Of 2,317 votes cast by union members, 1,778 voted against ratifying the pact, while 539 voted for it, according to a posting by the UAW Local 551 Communications on its Facebook page. Polls closed at midnight after two days of voting.

Scott Houldieson, secretary-treasurer of UAW Local 551, said he had heard from workers that they did not like the lack of a cost-of-living allowance in the contract and the continuation of a two-tier pay scale.

  • As the votes roll across the nation, union leaders have instructed members to prepare for strike if the agreement isn't ratified.
So not only are Rahm's promised jobs about to dry up, the UAW might be striking, meaning the 2,000-plus jobs already in place might be temporarily on hold until a settlement is reached.

Too bad for Ford they don't have Rahm to bust the unions and circumvent their contract.

However striking in this economy is a hard sell.

Just a few years ago, FORD laid off a few thousand of these workers in a cost cutting measure.

Those that remained gave up plenty in consessions to keep working with a promise from FORD that they would be taken care of down the road when the company was doing better.

Well guess what, FORD is doing quite well, and now the employees want a piece of that pie. And they deserve it for keeping FORD alive.

Screw Rahm and Quinn for counting their chickens before they are hatched.

UNION YES!!!!!

Barry again, " pass this jobs bill, ( stimulus II ) right now, and half a million people will become employed " EVEN THE DEMOCRATS DIDN'T VOTE FOR IT.

Meanwhile you may have heard about Ben Bernanke doing what they call an "Operation Twist" , manipulation of interest rates to try and further juice the economy?

Well corporations in Chicago are doing a little twisting of their own..

Check out the little battle for more tax breaks that will result in either more city cuts or higher tax rates for the middle class.

Oh is sounds so noble and something of valor when you say that you're going to save something doesn't it?

Seems Mr. Duffy from the CME is not happy with the cooperation that he's getting from Governor Quinn. when it comes to his tax breaks.

Keep twisting..maybe these guys will be able to hit that high C above middle C on the music scale soon.

Yeah they are always "saving" something. Every time they save we end up paying more. Transferring the wealth by transferring the tax burden.

Let's not forget that Sears is still on deck for a tax break soon too if I'm not mistaken.

Gap is closing 27% of it's stores nationwide, and was it Morgan Stanley or JP Morgan that has announced the elimination of 10,000 more positions.

We're in a race to the bottom

A cost of living raise? Did you really expect that to
be 'thrown in' in today's economy? And an end to
the two-tier pay scale? Really? Time to wake up
and smell the coffee, boys. Now is not the time
to flex on those things. Make this contract a short
one, get your contract signed, put your laid off co-
workers (at least 1,100 of them) back to work.
As the economy improves (and who knows when
that will be, but it won't be anytime soon, regardless
of whoever wins the White House in 2012), you
can fight for those other issues in the NEXT
contract. Fight the battles you can win right
now.

Now Racoon Eyes is giving his top mayoral aids almost 9% pay raises. Didn't this mutt just take office in May? What the hell gives. He lays off hundreds of workers, raising taxes, and he gets generous with his own crew at the Hall. If the city is so broke then everyone should share the burden. Again if you are connected you don't suffer. What a hypocrite bastard!

The more money we give these whore politicians the more they spend! Why not use that money to pay back some of those I.O.U.'s you have in our depleted pension funds.

That $15.00 extra vehicle tax is going to turn out to be a major pain for a lot of city residents. Finding out that almost 164,000 vehicles will have to fork over $135.00 a year instead of $75.00. The city is lowering the weight from 42,000 pounds to 40,000 pounds. The little guy gets fucked again. The city will reap an extra $14 million a year from this anal intrusion of the citizens.

Racoon Eyes says there will be no property tax hike in his budget. Really Rahm. Your bills are higher this year because the state is giving all homeowners who claim the Homeowners Exemption less of a break on their bills. All that extra revenue will go to all the taxing government bodies...including Chicago. We got a property tax increase Rahm. You LYING ASSHOLE!

Now go back to our union website and contact the Representatives that would like to give control of our pensions to the Mayor.

I see a lot of trolls on this blog lately. They are the posts that say our pension is a Ponzi scheme and disingenuous. It was a contract agreed on by both sides. WE took BENEFITS instead of cash we could have invested ourselves. The pension would be solvent if the City had put in it's portion. It did not.

Two Representatives from Naperville and down South want to give control of OUR money to Rahm Emmanuel. What insanity is this? What dirty deal was struck? The last Mayor's nephew dipped into out money and stole 70 million with out consequences.

Every politician in this State has been corrupted in some fashion or another. It is time to wipe the slate clean in the next election. VOTE OUT ALL INCUMBANTS! They clearly are not capable of honest work.

Understand what you are talking about. The contract was rejected because Ford did not live up to its end of the bargain. The workers have made concessions on the past contracts (including pay cuts)to keep people working. You are thinking is back words. This is the time to fight for your contract and not give up what you have already earned over the years. Then when times are hopefully better, you improve on what you already have.

As a police officer and member of a union myself I must say that unions are a huge reason this country is going bankrupt. businesses don't care anymore, they know Mexico and Asia don't have unions and will work at more than half the pay rate that union workers will. Unions are too hard to deal with and companies know this. There needs to be something else. There has to be fair pay for the workers but not so many complications for the workers. Every contract everyone screams for money money money. Which in turn makes the products the company is selling rise in price. So now, everyone has to pay more because the cost of labor is skyrocketing. businesses loose out on money, the government looses out on money so taxes go up. Taxes go up now union workers complain they are getting taxed to death so they ask for MORE MONEY! They go to arbitration and get more money. Now the same cycle happens and inflation and cost of living sky rocket for everyone. I love the union we are in but its just reality. Unions hold too much power and are destroying the economy. My dad worked for GM in Detroit before they were in a union he got a good wage, enough to where my mom didnt have to work, we got a new car every five years and he retired with a good pension. They eventually joined a union and over time he said it was the downfall of the company. The union actually complicated most situations. Before they had the union he was guaranteed a good pension by gm! Once the union got in they wanted more more more. Gm started loosing more money because of ridiculous demands for more pay and benefits that the labor/management conflict began. Now the cuts began and then the demise of gm happened. It took a good 20 years or so before the full fallout happened with the pulling out of detroit and flint but it happened because of the greed of the unions. Theres got to be a better way than unions. It has made it a competition between management and labor to see which one can win in negotiations. Before unions it wasnt like that for businesses.(cpd back in the day was a different story, im talking about labor unions U.A.W. etc). corporations wanted to take care of its workers because it was good for quality and business... now, the greed has turned it sour and we have the country we have now. add in the freebies for the non taxpayers and greed of unions and sending trillions over to somolia and other countries and we are broke... our economy will not recover until unions are regulated.

4: 41am. I would have to disagree with you. The UAW had already given concessions last contract. Ford is doing well, time to pay a living wage. What good is a job, if your wages are of that of a walmart worker, where your health insurance comes by way of cook county hospital and your rent has to be subsidized through section 8. The middlclass taxpayer again, is on the hook, not only to subsidize, Ford, with the tax breaks to offer said jobs, but also to subsidize the lower wage workers healthcare and rent. Its a vicious cycle. Look @ the sacrifices the middlclass taxpayer will have to endure, in the coming year, paying 135.00 for a city sticker, on a vehicle weighing 4 000 lbs, because the weight of those vehicles destroy roads. We all know thats, Bullshit, recycled, low grade asphalt, provided by daley's cronies and their subcontactors, is the culprit, not your Ford Taurus. The water bill, will be approx. 1200.00 and up by 1800.00,by 2015. Rahmmy, is pushing all this, while giving his commissioners and chief of staffs 9-12% raises. Watch for alderman and illinois state representatives to do the same. Where are their sacrifices "skin in the game". Give NO concessions. The money is there! TIF monies, skyway monies! Tax hike monies! They have been nickel and diming us for decades, now is the time to make sure we let the public know we are not the "greedy" enemy. We are like them. We want answers, so we can clean the mess within the structure of union leadership, which is the scourge, that should be dealt with by the membership, by enacting new by laws. We need to make sure our collective bargaining rights are protected, from the gannon and foley sell outs, and the political whims of the criminal families, that get elected by the sheeple, over and over again. We, the worker, have been under attack, just because we want to make a decent living. Time to turn the Tide. All Unions must unite and support each other. Our union leadership needs to see all of us @the meetings. Differences have to be put to the side. Your mayor 9.5, stands with that stupid smirk , pointing, the only evidence, of a real job he's ever had, at the public, knowing the working people and their unions will have to bend over and take it. Your mayor 9.5, made it clear in his campaign tour, thru some firehouses, that he liked to do it "dry, without lube". Imagine that. The Fire and Police boss get a raise, yet the rest of the rank and file, along with all the other lowly citizens will have to line up, to get it dry. Wake Up, this guy is satan. Its time to send him back to hell.

Why are we giving away millions to corporations just to stay here? If they wanted to really move they would have done so already. If I threaten to move out of Chicago (and I can't) would they pay me to stay here? Hell no.

Call a conference of governors meeting. Have the goverors of each state to agree not to give tax breaks to any company. If a state is found to be guilty then they will pay a fine equal to 100 times the tax break they gave away to be shared with the remaining states. Oh wait this would never work there is honor amoung theives but not honor amoung politicians.

Sadly, the politicians are making "union" a dirty word in American vocabulary.

How soon people forget that these unions have fought for so much for the American worker.

So many people are willing to sell themselves so cheaply and undo the protections unions have provided (Yes, even the FOP-ask any copper who was here prior to Jane Byrne).

There have been some abuses, as evidenced by recent double-dipping stories in the news, but for the average Joe, the unions have been a guardian.

Don't let America forget how much the union has done for workers and don't let the politicians distract Americans from the real problem; the politicians.

"If true" is the operative phrase here.
1. Is the 'victim' telling the truth?
2. Is the writer (note; I don't use the word 'reporter')
And, since you weren't there, there might be a lot about the demeanor or validity of the story that caused po's to tell the handwaver to 'take it into the station' and see if the desk sergeant thought it was worth a report.
btw, Noo Yawk, you gave yourself away. You need a Chicago translator.

it wasn't the grammar, buddy, it was the meaning, or rather, the meaninglessness of the content.

it's nice that you've managed to add a + b + c, but, until you factor in d through z, all you've got is a child's conclusion, drawn from a woefully incomplete understanding of practically everything.

i've gotten more thoughtful reasoning from my grandchildren.

and they've just started grammar school.
