Not for nothing, but wouldn't it make more sense to fill Sergeants before Detectives? That is, if in fact they plan on promoting both groups? I know of atleast three officers that are less than thirty out on both lists. What a waste. I feel sorry for the officers that get bumped out because of this ass backwards process. But I guess I answered my own question. No one ever mistook any of our Gold Stars with having any sense.
Not true they want to reduce the number of detectives to 700 currently 968.

The clout babies getting promoted want both stars in their case at retirement.
That is why they promote det. Before sgt.
They are making 3 new sergeants and only 5 new detectives. I just saw the order yesterday. Signed Rahm.
I call bullshit. I've been told by command staff on five or six occasions over the past four years of new dicks classes. Never happened.

This is little to no upward mobility in this department.
Promotions will only be given out with the approval of your alderthief simple as that! Legit promotions yea ok!
Promotions are overrated. Rely on clout-merit.
70% of promotions are picked by the process of who you know, 20-30 % are management, upper 1%'ers earned it.
If there was any indication of where (or who's up who's ass) the Department has been and where it's going can be judged by the past 20 years, as most of us have lived through the worse department legacy ever.
Reform the process GMac.... or shut up about pride and integrity.

Whoever does this elicits a laugh always! There will be no changes except if you have a unit C.O. they will replaced by a unit xo a captain doing lieutenants work at that higher rate of pay! It is coming to a unit near you, just hope you don't get a wounded jagoff, crying because he/she was moved!

It's happened twice during my career. No reason it wouldn't be done ass backwards again. (Sure does help in padding the resume, though.)

I was on the stupid list for the last few years for Dicks and Sgt.
Now all I want to do is retire and leave the H.M.S. Chicago/Titanic!
Promotions in 2012 will be exempt command staff only
no new dicks , sgts or lts til mid 2013
Look for command changes this Thursday.
There is talk of a final class of 50 dicks, but beware. They will be assigned 30 to Area 2 and 20 to Area 1 and without a future class, those dicks could stay in place for years.
This is the only way the department can staff the southside without violating the contract.
Problem is there is NO money for promotions, but the city may allow the minimal cost of 50 D1 to D2A promotions so McCarthy can save face. That's at least $250k.
Right now it looks like the aldermen will approve the extra money, IF they get the merit picks. McCarthy hates this, but he's painted himself into a corner.
Stay tuned. If there is a class, watch for the entire 20% merit to be relatives of the aldermen. This could be the last promotion for a long time.

sorry, but the sgts list is getting scrapped. The city has already farmed out a company to evaluate a new process and test for sgts. The list is as good as gone. Yes I do know, I work at R and D at 35th street and had to help find the company... which of course the company was hired in the last month of the daley admin.. and the company is a local chicago company who of course has ties to.... MAYOR DALEY!! Go figure. so if your on the sgts list, sorry to be the bearer of bad news but there are no plans on making sgts off that list. They are looking at giving a test somewhere in the area of jan 2013 to april 2013. It will be put in the budget next year for 2013 and 2014 when they start making sgts again. Start looking at those general orders.

So, according to Mr/Mrs. R&D. The city has hired a company to make a new Sgt. Test. Thats atleast one year , then give test in 2013 sometime, that means scores wouldn't be out for another year. So atleast two more years without another sgt class and it's been a year and a half since last promos. I call bullshit. If the city doesn't have money to promote, why spend millions to give another test and not promote again? Waiting 5 years and under 180 on the list.

None of us want to be sergeant. It's a necessary step to get to lieutenant, which is what we all wanted. Some of us got stalled at sergeant, for lack of a phone call, or a whisper of the 'code words' at the oral board, or bad timing with testing.
So, nobody's an asshole for wanting to be sergeant; they may just be the victims of the system and get STUCK being 'just a sergeant'. We work in a culture that doesn't allow for much in the way of legitimate career advancement.

True years ago it was a $5,000 drop,and to be commander $10,000 drop plus thousands in buying tickets every year! You don't buy your demoted simple huh?
Why continue the charade of a legitimate exam ?

BS... Anybody read the fax for bidding to the three new areas can see the numbers don't add up to the number of detectives on the payroll right now. Several hundred OVER budget so what's going to happen to them? I heard retirement or back to districts.
