Limitations

As a number of readers have pointed out, crowding 002 with tons of cops isn't going to be easy. In fact, the locker situation is said to be desperate and new people will be living out of their cars for the foreseeable future.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but isn't that how Thor got killed?

The Racoon doesn't see it that way. He could care less what your accommodations are in the districts. He just wants to parade the "new" officers around these shit districts to make it look like we have more cops. Fact is we have less. This little fucking conniving turd is putting so many lives at risk. I hope he gets his just deserts in the end. Probably not. Nothing will be his fault and he will move on to bigger jobs. Fucking rat mother fucker!

I thought they told us that more police isn't the answer.

Not to beat this dead horse, but they eliminate TRU/MSF, who saturated these troubled areas.

Now they saturate these very same areas with police.

Wheel. Reinvented.

Just a thought;

I believe Dist. 002 is the oldest dist./det. area in the city????

Built around 1969 or so, maybe older????

And it has had a history of dis-repair in the last 15 years with leaks into the lockup area and into the basement washroom areas?

Why in the world would you want to save that building?

And area 2 is just about in the same shape, a loser.

If you want to have only 3 areas, maybe they should build three brand new ones that would actually hold the amount of officers and detectives that have to work there, and provide adequate secured parking also?

Since we are trimming down our waistlines, maybe it's time for the extra 25 Aldermen to go also?

Their salaries would cover quite a few bills Mr. Mayor.

Just a Taxpayer.

Dressing for work out of your car is not what a police officer should be doing.

Not only is it a safety issue (RIP Thor) but how many will have their equipment stolen from their vehicles?

There is horrible oversight with the lockers in 002. Retirees still have locks on theirs. The gang guys still have on their locks, multiple lockers being used by po's. Lockers rusted out with repair signs on them for years. Fix the mess and on the male side most of the people from 021 should be ok. Or if its business as usual everyone of them will be dressing at home or in lot.

I think per contract, the city is required to provide every two officers one locker. That means move your shit over because they may require you to share your locker. Supervisors are required to have their own locker. Now thats interesting.

City buys face shields to protect cops from G-8 protesters

Chicago Police officers facing off against protesters during the NATO and G-8 Summits will be equipped with new face shields that fit comfortably over gas masks and include a seal to prevent officers from being blinded by liquids thrown at them.

Fraternal Order of Police President Mike Shields demanded the new shields to prevent officers from being blinded by bags of urine and feces thrown at them by “anarchists” and other hard-core protesters.

Someone posted about how many years it takes to get days in 002? Here is the overall picture prior to 021 absorption.

1st Watch is 5 years.
2nd Watch is 18 years.
3rd Watch is 8 years.

I expect all these minimums to go up at least 2-3 years for all Watches post absorption.

That is all.

Hello FOP,

Safety issue big time and the FOP should be making a lot of noise. Every member in this department should start calling the lodge to flood them with calls until this problem is corrected. That is how Thor was murdered and once again the city shows they have no regard for the safety of the police officers that protect them.

Call the lodge , flood them with calls.
This is ridiculous

We all had to live out of our cars during operation protect youth, i felt it was very dangerous/disater waiting to happen. I was very jumpy and looking over both shoulders while taking vest off and switching gun from duty belt to pancake holster out of my cars trunk. Many of the people sent to that gig were older cops that had been working indoors for 10-15 years. Its dangerous and downtown doesn't care. Bring a bag for equip. and change inside. Be safe.

Half of the 002nd district is vacant lots and the high rise projects are all gone and most of the low rise are vacant and what was the old 021st district rarely has any jobs. You don't need all these bodies going to the 002nd district. Spread them out elsewhere where they are greatly needed more.

Go dress at the Hyatt Hotel over on 53rd and Lake Park.

This 021 district elimination sweetened by a $20 million city giveaway to the University of Chicago is a perfect example of what's called the Delphi Technique -- making a decision, then "opening a period for public comment" or holding a meeting that isn't going to make the slightest difference in what happens.

"Community members said they were not necessarily opposed to the consolidation.

“I appreciated that we had the meeting so that people can voice their concerns,” President of forum co-sponsor Coalition for Equitable Community Development Pat Wilcoxen said. “I’m not alarmed by what I heard. It may be a reasonable thing to take this opportunity to right-size [the districts].”

...and there you have it.

Why?

Occupy says they're "peaceful." Ald. Joe Moreno is sending them trays of coffee and snacks from Starbucks.

What's the problem?

There we go with that "doomsday thinking" again.

I mean, just becasue they did about $4 million of damage in Oakland, California...

Like Mayor Emanuel says, "That was yesterday."

Oops. Forgot to put this link up to the giveaway story --

Changes coming to Hyde Park

"The main project is a Hyatt hotel and office tower at 53rd Street and South Lake Park Avenue, partly funded with $20 million from the city. The university, which owns the land, and LA Fitness are the anchor tenants of the office building. The developer hopes to bring 10 to 15 shops to the street-level space.

"The University also has purchased a number of buildings around the hotel project, including the former Borders building where clothing chain Akira will open a flagship store in the fall. The U. of C. also owns the building where the New 400 Theaters will open in November, and the building adjacent to it, where a Five Guys Burgers and Fries set up shop in September. Across the street the university renovated a building where a Clarke's restaurant is opening Monday."

Boy, you got that right.

Yesterday, it was $65.00 "gun titles," today the city will take money out of your state income tax refund to pay tickets, etc. -- and tomorrow the bus fares will skyrocket.

Here it comes again; the Delphi Technique. Make a decision and then pretend to "take surveys," solicit public comments," "hold meetings" -- none of which will affect the decision in the slightest.

"Hypothetical..."

Yeah, right.

CTA Survey Asks Riders’ Opinions About Hypothetical Fare Hike

February 14, 2012 4:35 PM

CHICAGO (CBS) – Would you pay double or more the current fare for a ride on the CTA? That’s one of the questions on a new survey the CTA sent to some of its customers...

"One of the options in the survey is a $3.50 fare for the bus, a transfer would be 75 cents and, if it’s rush hour, tack on another $1 to the fare. That would mean a cost of $5.25 for someone who took a CTA bus and transferred to a train during rush hour..."

http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2012/02/14/cta-survey-asks-riders-opinions-about-hypothetical-fare-hike/

Working people pay double full boat. "Flash mobs" ride free, of course...

Thor was working OPY at the old 007th Dist. Officers working OPY do not have nor are they offered/given lockers at that location.
Since Thor's death, most officers go to their unit of assignemt first and change there then report for duty at OPY. This adds about an hour to front and to the end of each tour of duty.

How sad that an officer's passing has not changed this department in any way.

RIP Thor.

off topic: Shaved has a topic on 9.5 buying 3,057 face shields for $193,461.
This comes out to $63.28 per shield.
On the companies website a regular shield costs $30.00. Let's see, with the quantity and police discount that means that they just double the cost for Chicago. Even with a special design this is too much! Good thing 9.5 didn't have to get a bid on these.
Also does this mean that we only have 3,057 patrolmen now? What about the other 9,000 mystery police. Don't they deserve face protection?

023 has bigger problems than the new locker room. Internal issues are rampant. And yes, the sewer "p trap" will dry up and start emitting sewer gasses. There is a triple catch basin inside that garage and unless continuously filled, will also dry up and emit fumes. I heard that new locker room is for supervisors only. If I get moved into that room, I will grieve it.

...not to mention rats. Perfect dark, close haven for them.

Since the place was used as a garage, there is probably old gasoline/oil accumulation down there. This drives city/state/federal Depts. Of Environment absolutely bugs, "oil getting into groundwater," etc.

If they get a notion to, they will have the whole thing ripped out and they'll drill "sampling wells" around the whole building, guys in hard hats with clipboards walking around for years and years afterwards. I've seen it.
