Good Job Tribune

Anyone else remember when the Tribune used to be the voice of Midwest Republicans?  Now you have shit like this in the paper:

Newspapers are supposedly the place to get accurate information, multiple layers of fact checking and all that.  But as they've sold their souls and embraced the role as mouthpieces for the left, you get all sorts of inaccurate propaganda that passes for educated discourse among the uninformed and ignorant.

These asshat editors can barely tell which end the bullet comes out. The last asshole mass shooter to afix a bayonet was Patrick Purdy as he shot up the school in Stockton California,1989. The dead tree press in shitcago along with the NY Times are the worst anti 2nd amendment liberals of all time. These idiots continue to refer to magazines as "clips". Dont believe a word they print, these people dont know shit about firearms. They just want everyone to be sitting ducks for criminals and lunatics. Namby pamby liberals become instant Republicans as soon as they become victims on the street. Watch for Madigan and her daddy to throw up every roadblock that they can think of to obstruct concealed carry in the Land of Lincoln. When you restrict the magazine capacity of defensive weapons, it makes it that much easier for multiple home invaders to overwelm the defender. Enough said.

Layers of fact-checking? There's not enough staff to do so properly. Many of the experienced editors and reporters have been bought out. What's left are young journalists who have no one to guide them. And much of the crap that's published online today would never make it to the final print version of a respectable paper a mere 10 years ago. The internet is a great tool but it also quite often waters down the quality of the information that's out there (see wikipedia). It's less about the paper having an agenda and more about the fact that there are just stupid, underpaid and inexperienced people employed there.

Lou,

I hope this note finds you well. Thank you for taking the time to write. We indeed misidentified the bayonet mount in the assault weapon graphic from last Friday. We checked our work with a handful of gun experts, but as it happens sometimes, in the hurry to meet deadline we missed this important detail. I certainly thank you for bringing it to our attention and we will run a correction in the paper in the next few days.

Sometimes it takes a few days for these emails to get routed to the right people. I'm the right guy to talk to and I'll make sure we get it corrected and straightened out. We work very hard to be fair and correct, but we do miss stuff here and there and when we do it's important to us to run a correction.

Feel free to send any other questions or thoughts my direction. Again, thanks for the note. I wish we didn't make the error, but we did and now I'll do my best to make it right.

Thanks,

Jonathon

...and the stupid assholes are wrong about the flash hider too. It's just there so that the SHOOTER isn't as dazzled by the muzzle flash -- and it doesn't do a whole hell of a lot for you.

But, then, you would have had to fire such a rifle to know much at all about it...

Everybody's an expert on everything from behind their computer.

*

So where's the story on what really happened at Sandy Hook School? Is someone going to do this before the whole place is gutted and remodeled, or do we just run with some vague impressions from the first five minutes of coverage?

Last pic I saw had 2 18-yard dumpsters and a bunch of civilian work trucks parked outside.

I thought all that was "evidence" in an "ongoing investigation" that would take "months?"

I love it when things like this happen. These people trying to explain a firearm is like a tribesman in the Congo trying to explain the dangers of Nascar. Yes a grenade launcher can be attached to many AR type rifles, but good luck going down to the grenade store to get some LVHE 40mm...You might be better off throwing fireworks at someone. And a bayonet can also be attached to some rifles, and I can scotch tape a kitchen knife to a broom handle and have a similar effect. After all, how many people here are killed with bayonet fettered grenade launchers? I'm not going to detail the ignorance of that illustration, if it were some gun blog you might expect such a mistake, but a major newspaper? Fact finding is a little bias, isnt it, Tribune.

Tribune, you are a source written for sheep, by sheep. You grew up in your Lincoln Park home sheltered and scared of anything that goes boom because your teachers at Lane Tech told you so. NOW, you fear guns and your fear is even greater if the gun "looks scary", like a clown with sharp teeth. And you will scramble to publish any tripe to get any sheep in the public to agree with your irrational fear. Why would you not publish an article outlining good firearms safety? Do you not think that would be more responsible than trying to scare the sheep?

1/22/2013 12:41:00 AM

From memory --

Bayonet lug.

...and that lug is merely a vestigial leftover of military purchasing requirements. The colonels insist that "an Army gun" has to have a place to mount a bayonet -- even though the last U.S. service rifle strong and heavy enough to actually be used for hand-to-hand fighting with a bayonet was the famous M1 Garand of WWII.

...and the weapon you portray, the one available to civilians, is not an "assault rifle" or "assault weapon."

The first true "assault rifle" was the German StG44 -- "Sturmgewehr 1944" -- a selective-fire, full-automatic or semi-automatic rifle. "Sturm" = "storm, assault," as in "storm the enemy's position." "Gewehr" = "rifle." New concept, had to call it something. The first recipients were paratroopers, combat engineers, and other specialized troops. It fired a shorter and less powerful cartridge than the old bolt-action rifles, was shorter, lighter, and easier to handle on an increasingly mechanized battlefield with changing tactics, and was designed for less expensive manufacture in a war economy of bombed-out factories and shortages of skilled labor and critical materials. An evolutionary weapon in a number of ways.

The military-style rifle you depict has no full-automatic capability. Such weapons have been very heavily regulated by Federal law since the National Firearms Act of 1934, and in any case are prohibited for civilian ownership in Illinois, period.

If you wish to understand societal problems, study society and those who form it, mold it, shape it, steer it along -- and profit from these activities.

Everything else is just incidental junk laying around.

"Bayonet lug." S__t.

>sigh<

It's not so much the people in our family who carried arms as it is the ones who produced and inspected them...

+ .0001"

- .0000"

...to "make the world safe" for what? For Janet Hasson and the Journal-News to publish lists of law-abiding citizens for burglars to peruse, so that "more stolen guns will end up on the street used in senseless violent crimes?"

To put it mildly, it would seem that advocates of the First Amendment certainly give short shrift to the defenders of the Second, which guards all the others.

Readers saw an error -- and more -- in this Chicago Tribune assault weapon graphic. (January 22, 2013)

By Joe Knowles

6:05 p.m. CST, January 22, 2013
Guns are a sensitive topic, especially now, and a graphic we ran on Page 18 of the Friday, Jan. 18, paper failed to account properly for that sensitivity.

That’s the thing about errors – making an obvious one, as we did here, automatically raises questions about our credibility.

First, we made a blatant and inexcusable labeling error. In an attempt to explain what makes a gun an “assault weapon,” we mistakenly labeled the gun’s sling attachment as a mount for a bayonet or grenade launcher. We apologize for the error and have published a correction.

Readers found other issues with the graphic as well. Some questioned our use of the term “spear” to describe a bayonet’s function. While the dictionary defines a spear as a weapon for throwing or thrusting, it would have been more accurate to call a bayonet a detachable knife that can be used in various ways, including close-quarters combat. When attached to the gun, it becomes a spear-like weapon for thrusting. We did not mean to imply that the gun would be thrown or used as a projectile.

In our description of the flash suppressor placed at the end of the gun’s muzzle, we said the device breaks up the explosion that results from firing the gun. We also said that “some find the suppressor controversial as it could also make the flash from a shot less visible, allowing a shooter to conceal his position.” One very knowledgeable and articulate reader took issue with that statement, as concealment is not the suppressor’s primary function — it’s a safety device to prevent fires. We never said it was the suppressor’s primary function, only that it conceivably could make a shooter more difficult to locate, which is why it’s controversial.

Other readers questioned whether any attempt to define an assault weapon should even include semi-automatic guns, which fire one bullet at a time. (Fully automatic weapons, which fire continuously for as long as the trigger is pulled, are already banned and have been for decades.) The point of the graphic was that certain characteristics can get a semi-automatic gun classified as an “assault” weapon, depending on the jurisdiction. The federal assault weapons ban expired in 2004, but some states still have versions of the law in place, and an accompanying chart showed how the federal law differs from laws in California and New York regarding features such as flash suppressors and bayonet mounts.

Readers count on us to get everything right, every time. When we don’t, we deserve to get called out. That’s fair.

Here’s what isn’t fair, though: Some readers seized this opportunity to accuse us of using this graphic to promote what they termed a specific liberal agenda on the topic of gun control. They saw our labeling mistake as a deliberate misrepresentation, one that made these weapons seem more dangerous. Let me say emphatically that this was a careless mistake, not an intentional deception nor bias. It is regrettable because we got a basic fact wrong, period.

We always welcome feedback from our loyal and careful readers. Thanks to everyone who contacted us and offered firsthand knowledge and expertise on this top-of-mind subject.

"Guns are a sensitive topic -- a graphic we ran on Page 18 of the Friday, Jan. 18, paper failed to account properly for that sensitivity."

This has nothing to do with "sensitivity."

Technical matters are not emotional vagaries.

Either nomenclature and information is right or it is wrong.

I know that firearms use and safety is something you have to get right or you'll injure or kill yourself or someone else.

* OFF TARGET, OFF TRIGGER

* Watch your muzzle

* Watch your background

* Know your weapon's condition. Be consistent.

No time for a "top-of-mind subject" when gun handling. Sorry.

I cannot address the detachment from physical reality seen among today's smartphoners.

NOT ONE PERSON ASSIGNED TO WRITE ON THIS TOPIC HAD THE SLIGHTEST PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE.

What result do you expect?

I'll honor my oath regarding guns right after they allow me to honor my oath regarding illegals. Not gonna happen.

while you stand there, with your balls cupped within your dainty little hands, waiting for 'they' to 'allow' you to honor your oath, others who know the meaning of honoring an oath will do so.

with no regard, whatsoever, to seeking 'permission' from 'they'.

Do you ever wonder why Illinois politicians, the MOST corrupt in the nation, are fighting so hard to deny citizens in Illinois the constitutionally guaranteed right to concealed carry that every other state enjoys?

Because it terrifies them that people will wake up and put them where all tyrants belong.

I'll bet less than one percent of these so called reporters served this country in the military. A vet would have caught that and fixed it. But the anti-American left wing communists that want to control the media for propaganda doesn't believe in military service.

Fuck all of you scum bags at these yellow journalism rags.

I stopped buying the Trib nearly 11 years ago and haven't read it since. I never read the suntimes and wont. Sad, because my siblings and I delivered the Trib when we were very young and my entire family subscribed to it. Now not one of us reads it. It's all distortions of the truth and bias slanted stories. No fair reporting.

To 1-22 7:45PM.

Remember, you do have control over one issue and that is to honor your oath to uphold and defend the Constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic, and to defend the 2nd Amendment and a citizen's right to own and bear arms.

The second issue of illegal immigration is an issue that must be addressed separately. FYI, google Senator Marco Rubio's conservative/Republican plan as it pertains to illegal immigration and what can be done about it.

Last item, check out www.oathkeepers.org. If you will honor your oath, believe in the Constitution, Liberty, Freedom and the 2nd Amendment, please check this oranization out. My spouse and I have been members for the last five years. Can't say enough about this organization.

You're right. But they think it takes a socialist village to raise a child and that every child should get a trophy so none of them feel bad.

When you grow up that way, facts don't seem so important. It's feelings that are important. The communists have succeeded in softening up Americans so they will lie down instead of fight.

Hey SCC,

Since I'm overseas enjoying a nice, government funded mountain resort vacation, I thought to myself "Self, you could really use a grenade launcher mounted bayonet to to spear the infidels with"

Well, I took my assault rifle over to my unit armorer, along with the Trib's picture, and asked him to mount me one of those right there on the lug.

He laughed at me and told me to get the f**k out of his hooch! Don't they teach these armorers anything at thier MOS school these days?!?

I read your blog every day over here. I'm always interested in knowing what's going on in the Peoples Republic of Chicago!

As an aside, the Tribune is the paper that fought to publish Jack Ryans' private divorce records as he ran against obama for senate in Illinois.... thank them if you like our preezy. I would never willingly give that organization another dime of my (worked for) money...

And who used to work at the Trib and gave them the inside scoop and told them to search for it? Axelrod.
