How Big Was This Cover-Up?
Of course, the Sun Times publishes this on a national holiday when probably over 75% of readers are staying home and won't buy a newsstand copy. Why wasn't this published on a Sunday?:
- For the 22 years he was mayor, Richard M. Daley relied upon a select group of police officers to ensure his safety and that of his family.
The security detail was more than a palace guard. Its members routinely traveled with Daley and his family. They drove his kids to school. They ran errands for the family.
Now, members of the police detail that served Daley are being questioned by Dan K. Webb, the special prosecutor appointed by a judge last year to reinvestigate the 2004 death of David Koschman.
- Webb continues to look into why police and prosecutors from the Cook County state’s attorney’s office didn’t charge Vanecko.
Webb’s team has questioned retired police Cmdr. Sam Roti, who became the detail’s commander in 2004, about two months after Koschman’s death.
Roti replaced James Keating, a retired police officer who is now head of security for the Chicago Transit Authority.
Keating and Roti both grew up in Bridgeport, the former mayor’s old neighborhood. Each joined the detail on April 25, 1989 — the day after Daley was first sworn in as mayor.
The article also outlines how the Security Detail was the first call Grand Beach Michigan police made when Patrick and Vanecko threatened some Filipino kids with a shotgun and one of "Patrick's friends" beat another kid into a coma with a baseball bat. Funny how no one in the press wondered why anti-gunner Daley had a shotgun stored out-of-state.
Fran also does a good job describing the incestuous relationships between Daley's detail, off-duty security businesses, and future high-paying government jobs certain members of that detail had at various points in time. Webb is hardly independent. I predict a lot of answers consisting of "I don't remember," or "I don't know." He'll be interviewing a bunch of amnesiacs.

The really scary thing is that Bill Daley is considering a run for governor. I'm planning to leave this state right after retirement, but if that happens, it might hasten things a bit.
The word on the street is that a supervisor from Detectives North has already made his deal with the Feds, and is naming names.
Several years after dropping out of West Point, Patrick enlists in the army. Why? Was he kicked out of West Point for a honor code violation? did he have CPD body guards while in the army? there are lots of rumors about various guys making deals. if even 1 in 10 is true a lot of guys are going down, but it will be mostly coppers and other low level city employees. no one important will take a hit.
the usual deal is you take the hit for a few years and forget anything that has to do with anyone important and we will take care of you when you get out.

I love people who use the jealousy argument, some of us just want a system that is fair for everyone who is qualified instead of the current corrupt process. Why shouldn't every sworn member get an equal opportunity for all CPD positions. The past and current "merit" system has led us down the path to destruction, that's not jealousy, that's a fact!
Oh by the way some people are still unwilling to sell themselves to the devil despite what you think.

The story of the Daley boys theft of Fire Commissioner Quinn's estate made the front page of the Tribune at the time it happened. There was a lot more than the house stolen. No heirs, no one to beef. He did have a few distant relatives, but no one cared.

Daleys' oldest daughter NORA is a complete B---H, she had the priviledge of having a city owned mini- van and copper to drive her around with the kids and hubby whom Daley was trying to groom for office. This irritated the crap out of me, she would walk around like she was the mayor. I saw her while I was doing dignitary details and always got sick to my stomach seeing all this crap.

I don't have any reason to be jealous of the political assholes. My reputation is intact, I'm educated and employable elsewhere.
Daley has so much love & passion for Chicago that he now counts all his money in his Michigan home.
All of the old timers on the detail received subpoenas from Webb.....karma is a bitch and the old guys are gonna tell the truth..they have no loyalty to Daley, Daley treated them all like shit!!!! All detail guys since 1990 were subpoenaed!!!! Even the old commanders MM and LG!!! Daley forced MM into retirement after his city business came to light by the media. Keating was with the old guard as a PO and left to make sgt. Then came back after LG retired!!! All the old guys have met with Webb!!!

I recall a lieutenant and a police officer were indicted and served federal time for stating before a grand jury " I dont remember". Both of them worked vice in 018. It was a department rule back then that you could not take the 5th. Now, this is not a federal grand jury, but the guy running it was a federal prosecutor. My point is, you must testify or take the 5th or you could be facing jail time.
The detail gets more then pensionable sergeant pay. They get a monthly clothing allowance, never have to use sick days or time due. Not bad. The jealous arguement is pretty weak. The " I need my own team" is also weak. Give everyone a fair shot at a plum assignment.
I hope the lot of the arrogant, corrupt , clout fucks get indicted and go to prison.
Serves them right for serving the corruption machine and looking down upon the working No Clout blueshirts!
If Rahm were smart, he would capitalize on this fatal error of the Daleys.
Rahm has the power to destroy the Daley Clan forever!
If played out correctly the Daleys will never be a threat to Rahm.

Blast form the past, old timer! Didn't he have like 9 notches in his belt? He was the real deal, what a character. For those of you new guys (anyone on after 1982), this guys was in like eight shoot-outs, killed nine guys, all legit. He was a part time actor that had a commercial on TV as a butcher for Dominick's - good looking guy. He retired and ran for political office in like Palos Hills or something.
Yup. Back in the day, when dinos still roamed the earth. I always sighed in relief when he showed up on a job. He was working the day Sgt. Jerry Hardin was shot in the face at 75 and Cottage, was disappointed the perp was taken alive. They broke the mold, sigh.
Worked with Corny (Cornelius) Morgan in 006 when I was very young on job. HE WAS THE REAL DEAL! Went to Sportsman's Park with him to bet a few races. Great guy. HELLUVA COPPER. Almost bought his home in St. Thomas More when he retired. Big house had alot ok kids. Anyone know how he's doing?

There were always major media willing to run stories. Leaks to the Sun Times iced Ald. Mazola from the Med Ctr. board, and there were few as connected as he. I think the anti-media bias here is a little childish. They need sources. The reason they're running this now is because they have a source in the special prosecutor. If anyone has proof of anything, find a reporter. It'll get written.

One of the reasons Rich retired is people around him started to realize the anger over the parking meter contract made him vulnerable to actually losing.
What people haven't realized, but they will, is that the parking contract went to Morgan Stanley, and the conduit back to la familia was Bill Daley's son, who has a fat job there.
I think once Bill's name gets attached to the parking meter contract, that balloon is going to burst.
