Thanks Quinn!

  • Illinois fell to the bottom of all 50 states in the rankings of a major credit ratings agency Friday following the failure of Gov. Pat Quinn and lawmakers to fix the state’s hemorrhaging pension system during this month’s lame-duck session.

Standard and Poor’s Ratings Service downgraded Illinois in what is the latest fallout over the $96.8 billion debt to five state pension systems. The New York rating firm’s ranking signaled taxpayers may pay tens of millions of dollars more in interest when the state borrows money for roads and other projects.

“It’s absolutely bad news for taxpayers,” said Dan Rutherford, the Republican state treasurer. Illinois received its bottom-of-the-pack ranking when it fell from an “A” rating to “A-minus.”

That’s the same rating as California, but California has a positive outlook. Illinois’ fragile overall financial status netted it a negative outlook, putting it behind California overall. The ratings came out now because Illinois plans to issue $500 million in bonds within days.
"Death Spiral" is an apt term.

Now who do you think will pay the extra millions in interest, US. "US" as in the productive taxpaying citizens of Illinois.

Who do you think will GET these extra millions in interest that WE will pay? The friends of Quinn, Blaggo, Madigan, Daley and Rahm, etc.

Question: If Quinn, Blaggo and so forth had to pay the pension debt with interest, more than the interest they would pay the bonding companies don't you think they would have solved this mess long ago?

Yeah S&P can blame the pension mess that the state created, but the reality is the reckless spending and waste is the main cause. If the democratic politicians that control the state would not spend so much the pension would be in better shape. By the way. I thought Quinn's state income tax increase would make things better? Oh, did they just spend more instead?

They've stolen the pension money and it's everyone else's fault but the politicians.

The pension money went to their clouted friends via no-bid contracts and now the taxpayers are suppose to accept higher taxes and the city workers are to accept cuts so that they can do it all over again.

No accountability!

We are going to see headlines soon how the political apparatus is here to "save you" OH, oh-oh here they come to "save the pensions"!

How they gonna "save the pensions"?

BY CUTTING EVERYONE'S BENEFITS IN A TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT PROPOSAL.

In the end they will boldly stand in front of the press and tell us all how proud they are to do this for the city and how it's a good day for all involved.

The clouted ones have our pension money and they are already coming for more. Hello Maggie Daley park and six figure bike paths and 100 year parking meter contracts.

The lawyers to fight the parking meter contracts and the next rounds of second amendment challenges will go to the city law firms as pension payments are skipped once again.

No one held accountable as the crimes go unpunished.

Was watching the news last night. Now, they want to print the government's pension liabilities on property tax bills. This is an obvious effort to convince the public that action must be taken on the pension problem. It is a problem created by the politicians, but they want to shift the blame on the workers. Why don't they cite statistics like monies spent for education which continues to produce the worst scores in the nation. How about monies spent for all the social programs which have no effect on Chicago's homicide rates?

In fainess, Quinn has been working hard on this, he is the only Illinois governor out of the past three, to actually increase funding for the pension obligations. Quinn has in all actuality, poured billions into the pension funds.

So the thing is not why the bond/credit rating has been downgraded but rather if Quinn had done nothing the downgrade to this level would have happened already. Quinn's moves have managed to make the downgrades further apart.

Still, the alarm is sounding and we cannot wait for Madigan and Daley to fight over who gets to carve up the state, more action is needed now.

I am definitely not a huge Quinn fan but he has been working hard and has been paying as much as he can into those funds. It is such a huge problem it just feels like little or nothing has been done. Not altogether true.

I hate being fair to a politician but when the alternatives are named Madigan and Daley I make an exception.

If Bill Daley gets in there I am afraid to think what he might do to pay bills. What can he and Richy sell or lease off to get some walking around cash? The Mississippi River? Entire State Tollways? State Parks? Entire Counties that he can sell of lease to other states or private developers? Coal mines and deposits to China? Miles miles of corn growing regions to Russia? With a Daley involved, anything is possible. I wouldn't be surprised for another attempt at a Daley grab for control of pension funds to prop up the Daley Family ATM network of friends and family slush funds.

Remember the old parable about the devil you know vs. the other devils.

The state is in a much worse position than the city. City pension plans are not well funded but the city has the means to fix that if they have the will do to so. I do not think city employees will suffer much from any pension changes. There may be some tweaks around the edges and some minor changes to new employees but on the whole it won't change much.

Existing state workers are in much the same position because the state constitution gives them strong protections and there is no indication that congress is going to allow states to declare bankruptcy as that would create all kinds of constitutional issues that would be in court forever. Existing pensioners are in an even stronger position than existing employees.

New state workers might have to accept some changes that would probably not amount to as much as you might think.

The real problem is that the state wasted hundreds of billions of dollars on other things over the last few decades and the pot of money they can borrow from to pay for that is about empty, so at some point they are going to have to make some serious cuts to social programs or go bust. I am not sure how a state can actually go bust though. At some point, state suppliers will just stop selling to the state or demand much higher prices for their goods and services to cover the long time before payment. At present the state is almost 6 months behind in paying its bills, and if the rush to spend does not change soon, that will get worse.

At some point something needs to be done about cutting social programs and state government employment. But, most of that is oriented around buying votes, so I don't see a whole lot of change of the good type coming. My guess is it gets worse before it gets any better if it ever gets better.

Illinois is the perfect example of a place where the looters are in charge. Rahm, Madigan, Quinn and their cooperating Repuke lapdogs work together (the "combine") to loot the middle class on behalf of their dual constituency - the oligarch class (concentrated in Chicago, with lots of dual-citizens) and the welfare leeches. It's a de-facto one-party state, ruled much like Mugabe's Zimbabwe - with an election system to match.

It's unreformable. I'm outta here ASAP. The sooner the God-forsaken wasteland sinks into utter third-world chaos, the better. Any state that spawned the likes of Hussein Obama deserves it. Let Illinois serve its real purpose on earth.

The clouted ones contracts will go on uninterrupted I'll bet. Oh-NO can't cut those, they're the first to be paid!

$55 Million Dollar Maggie Daley park, a prime example.

A casino would bring money in eh? Nope, not going to do it until the public workers take cut in benefits.

How about bringing in some of those good wage doctors that also hire support staff. NOpe, not gonna do it. The politicians cut funding to the licensing dept. in Illinois and new applications to practice are running 18 months behind. We don't need that stinking tax revenue. We need to show shortages to get the public employees to agree to cuts in benefits and wages. Create a crisis to use the crisis.

Ban guns sales, ban sugary soft drinks in city vending machines, ban smoking in the casinos that are here so that people gamble in Indiana instead. Direct the banks to cut off the four Illinois gun makers so that they can't hire anyone. Ban, ban, ban..Then sell off all the sources of revenue generation, the parking meters, the skyway, midway airport, sell all the cities assets.

History has shown the last thing to get raided is the treasury before everything collapses and the so-called leaders leave the country with the cash..

When the austerity comes down and they start cutting the food stamps and the pensions and the health care there's not much left for many in this city -- and hungry desperate people have been known to do desperate things.

civil forfeiture of all assets, accrued and/or acquired, by those persons elected, past and present, who are, collectively and individually, responsible for our city, county and state debt to date.

the citizens do not owe this debt, neither individually nor collectively, since no citizen will ever claim personal responsibility for directing their elected representatives to incur, either via incompetence, intention and/or deliberation, such debt solely for the improper dispensing of said debt for the personal gratification and/or enrichment of any and all person or persons, directly or indirectly, by whatever means, other than for the honest purpose of financing the functioning of necessary and/or essential governmental responsibilities, said functions being limited by state and federal constitutional specifications to serving the citizens' sole interests, as enumerated within said constitutions.

in other words, hang the guilty parties upside down, shake out every last asset of value, return said assets to the citizens, via debt elimination, then, if the mood fits, drain them of all bodily fluids and burn their dessicated remains as fuel for the fires of hell.

I read a poor Indian dude was poisoned when he got a wheelbarrow of lottery money. Or perhaps it was an accident. Or suicide.

Now what happens to the stats? Does the homicide numbers from last year go up by one or is that poisoning now counted this year? Or do they quietly ignore that one and thus it flies away without being counted as a homicide at all?

Just wondering.

This guy told me that this chain will ever open a site in Chicago, period. This guy stated the taxes to run a business in Chicago is not worth the effort. Can you think of others who avoid the Chicago market !
Culver' has a few in Cook county, because the locations are $ makers and the county is a lot better then the city in soaking the businesses.
There is not enough federal jails to house these crooks in elected offices.
I am retired from the job and will stay around Chicago until I get planted. Too okd to move out of state.

People are moving from Illinois because of the high crime rate and political corruption. Jobs go to "dummy" relatives who do not know what they are doing, which costs more money in errors and waste.

All kidding aside I am in my early 40's, have over 15 years on the job and I was born and raised in Chicago. When I was a young kid and teenager I cannot remember my father ever complaining about taxes, be it real estate or sales tax. My point is simple, spending has gotten out of control and the borrowing of our pensions has gotten even worse. And no my father was not employed as a person who received a pension, he worked in the private sector. Yet he never beefed about a few of his friends who were getting pensions back then.

I would like to know where all the money has gone and where it currently is going. Where I grew up you had very large apartment buildings with one tax bill, one water bill, they were all paid by the building owner. Now you have that same building that was converted to condos, which has several tax bills and water bills. So I guess what I am saying is we have more money coming in than we ever did and we are broke. I love living here I just hate paying dearly for it.

I have a few more years to go and I am saying goodbye to the place that the Democrats and welfare recipients have ruined.

I just wish some of these media suckholes would dig into the spending and backdoor deals instead of making all of us look like selfish pension grabbing people.

Since I'm now among the dead (even getting a promotion in the process), let me tell you jokers something: There are uncountable legions of us spectral electors in Illinois. We inhabit vast necropoles all over the state. We vote early, and often - and fast (even thousands of times a second). You fools are no match for us. We always vote one way, too. Uncle Yusif stated it elegantly many moons ago: Those who cast the votes decide nothing. Those who count them decide everything. Y'all better stop bitching on the internet and get back to work - Rahm, Gerry, Michael and Lisa need your money. Never forget - what's yours is theirs and what's theirs is theirs.
