Coolest fire pic ever was a color scene with some old Blue & Whites. ('64 Savoys)
Will we ever get our mojo back like the mojo our Dads and Grand-Dads had?
Quiet McCarthy! You don't count!
A hearty Hee-Haw SAL-UTE! to the hose rollers out there. Now, go warm up, guys. Good job.
2 massive and deadly fires that the Fire Dept (and us) had to deal with in freezing weather yesterday. But the Fire Dept doesn't do anything to earn their pension. They have to share the pain too, per Rahm.
What a joke.
Firemen rock. Ur my hero. What would the city do without u
News report said that a fireman was seriously injured falling on all that ice -- prayers and best wishes.
These are always a nightmare - burning like crazy on one side and frozen solid on the other...
As one C.F.D. Chief said after the McCormick Place fire (16 Jan. 1967), "When they get that big just send me engines and leave the trucks at home." (Yes, I am that old)
Thank God, no serious injuries.
I'm familiar with the old time rivalry between the CFD and CPD for various reasons, but they do earn their yearly paycheck a few times a year. Your service earns it back in spades everyday, it just deserves way more recognition than what you get. The Rahmulator can't fool everyone forever.
Hats off to the CFD....
and $100 says the fire sprinkler system in that building either wasn't in service or properly maintained by the building owners.
first responders are always the true heros, did anyone catch the news clip last week, didnt happen in chicago, where the firefighter was ascending his ladder only to be knocked off by a huge falling chunk of ice, sure enough he shook it off and was climbing back up only seconds later....
thats a super hero in (my)most books.
With all that frozen ice on the building, how can it burn?
Does anyone think for a moment that our TuTu Mayor, or Aldercreatures would have the balls and stamina to stand in that cold and fight a 5 alarm fire? Would workouts at the East Bank Club give someone the courage to face real danger? Sure, firefighters work 24 on and 48 off; but when they work that 24 tour on a major fire, we realize what they really do. Just like you pay insurance, for when you have that crash, and for when you do not, we pay them to be ready. And no matter what they are paid, it is never enough to stand up face to face with the force of nature that is fire. As a cop, I run toward gun fire, and firefighters run to the fire. That is why we are different from the elected cowards that run our government.
All our fellow first responders in the CFD...
Bless em' all, the long and the short and the tall.
Ban all fires!!!!!

God love the Fire Department, I would rather be shot than run into a fire and burn to death.
Woooooooooow I wish I was a fireman! Wowy wow wow! Zoinkers are they coooool!
I would love to see the House Mouses at my District work as Firemen.
I have a question for any firefighter that may be reading the blog. I understand the need to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby buildings and that the heat from a fire of that magnitude produces heat one cannot explain. My question is since it is an abandoned building why do you guys put so much effort into putting the fire out why not let it burn itself out once the building is that far gone while keeping the buildings that are close "safe"? For the record this is not a dig or a judgement just a question from a person who is truly curious. Thanks for your answers and stay safe!
Fire roared up again at 0600! Chief said it was never fully put out do to fear of collapse!!!
These warehouse fires our getting way out of hand. We need Obama to use his executive powers to control this type of shit. Get me Gov Quinn on the phone! Wait what's that you say? That's the warehouse where all the CPD contact cards were being stored, oh boy.
Isn't that the location Rham wants to put a Silver Line Station for that new El Line that's supposed to link up with the Orange Line at Ashland? Why buy & pay to knock it down over preservationist protests when you can burn it down and annex it... That's the Chicago way...
First thing I thought of when I heard that there was a massive fire in Bridgeport is that it must be the Daleys burning all their incriminating paperwork, especially since it flared up again the way it did. I suppose though, that it would take a fire many times that size to actually do that job!
Damn, that bottom one looks like it was shot with IR film, freaky.
God created firemen so policemen could have heros too!
Thanks to our firefighters and police officers for doing what they do on a daily basis.
A GRATEFUL CITIZEN
Where was the Marine Unit one this one?
Great work by CFD!! Glad everyone was ok.
This just in: Marine unit on scene in jet skis to support the CFD. Great job guys!!
Marine unit stop baby seal robbery at lincoln park great job guys!
Did anyone see who owned that building??? Calvin Boender who went to the joint with IKE Carothers for fraud and other shady deals. I'm sure that fire was not an arson. Riiiiiiight, wink, wink.
I wonder if the Mayor showed up on the scene to shake the hands of the Firemen like he did in the tv series he made a special appearance in a few weeks ago(Chicago Fire)NOT.
hmmm
giant fire a a few weeks back on 21st and western?

Now this giant fire only a short drive away?
Anyone know how u do an arson investigation on a collapsed building?
Suspended one more factory and it will be a pattern good luck new Bomb and arson detectives.

Been in that building (or the one next to it). Tens of thousands of board feet of old growth lumber cut to 3"x14". Set on edge to form decks throughout the building. Terrible waste of irreplaceable resource.
Hey I figured why we're not getting winter weather...
Old Man Winter is afraid to come to Chicago because he might get shot.

They were roping those engines down, too, afraid they would go sliding off into the lake...
When I made a contribution to the Salvation Army Red Kettle I told the Bell Ringer that the Sallys made the best coffee in the world.
Of course I added you had to knee deep in a 2-11 or better fire in January.
Stay Safe, see you on the roof.

Not kidding, I just came from a Law Enforcement dinner where C.F.D. Commissioner Jose Santiago was the guest speaker. He spoke about this fire and the InterContinental Hotel Chimney rescue attempt and high-rise fires.
One of the concerns he stated was that this warehouse fire threatened to spread far and wide due to airborne embers. Nearby were residences and a pallet factory.
Writing for myself, the firefighting here was mostly defensive, not risking the lives of firefighters.
He went into detail with photographs about the rescue attempt of the college student who fell down the chimney at the InterContinental Hotel. Of great concern there was the victim was only inches from a 400 foot drop into bowels of the furnace system. They had to cut through boiler plate steel to get to him. All the while they were doing this they had to carefully monitor the atmosphere in the chimney for toxic fumes. Sad that all the effort was only for a body recovery.
Since he noted that there were a lot of C.P.D. personnel in the group he told a quick story of how he met McCarthy at the funeral of a Fire Fighter.
McCarthy said, "I hope you don't mine a guy with a gun comes up to shake your hand."
One of the Chiefs behind the Commissioner said, "What makes you think you’re the only one here with a gun?"
You've been watching too much DIY and This Old House. You've become a yuppie.
NOTHING is irreplaceable. Not even YOU.
