What's Happening in 006?

A lot of complaints popping up:
  • I work in 006 district and have a few questions. I have called FOP and they have been complete useless to talk to. I was hoping you could shed some light for me and the fellow sixers.

Since the start of the first period this year, they have stripped everybody of their partners. Officers who were in the same day off group and worked everyday together were told we couldn't do this anymore. We were told to find a third partner. If we didn't find the third to our liking, they will assign one to you. Exact words from out midnight LT M.S. "quit acting like babies, if you don't like who I assign to you, who cares, you all be happy you have a J.O.B!" So basically I had to leave my partner I worked with everyday for the past 3 years.

They have also told us no more time due! According to our bosses this is a city wide order (have yet to see an order on it). They said 006 is only allowed 6 people per night to let take off. This includes people on medical, furlough extensions and even supervisors. Since 006 usually has at least 5-10 officers on medical each day, us officers are screwed. Also a sgt can bump us on the time due list at any time. Which is outrageous. I've already been denied 3 days in February. All personal days too I might add.

Now last night at midnight roll call, LT M.S. stated that per the DC that we need to come in with 10 contact cards per night. How can they force us to do that? Especially expect us to do work for them after they completely throw us under the bus.

I guess since 006 led the city in homicide's is the reasoning for all these changes (according to our sgts). But morale is at an all time low here in 006 and looks like it is going to keep plunging downward. Is there anything we blue shirts can do? Or are we completely screwed? I hope you have a little time to reply back to me and give me some insight, I would love to hear your take on our situation.
These complaints aren't unique to 006, unfortunately.   Desperation to keep a gold star spot is driving already fragile egos over the edge.  And 006 isn't the only place - on north side:
  • SCC, in a northside district on 1st watch the XO is sending her sgt emails complaining about activity. She has the DSS pulling midnight cars in one by one and telling them they must write 3 contact cards, 5 Parker's and a mover everyday or else. In fact the cool aid drinking sgt are supporting the XO and also warning the troops about what will happen if they bring in no activity. When did quotas return?
That would be Henny Bad Penny Trahanas popping up on the radar again. And on the west side:
  • 011 Dist 2nd watch Lt has his own plan of attack!

With the start of the 1st period LT JA has decided to "Shake the Tree" and shuffle just about everyone's start time and cars.

He Routinely calls in officers and has a "closed door" meeting (berating and beheading) with them and THREATENS them with taking them off thier car or constantly chanigng their start time and/or constatnly shuffling them from one sector to another.

He even told one officer that "all you are qualified to do is drive a garbage truck"!

He has even taken it upon himself to reinstate to position of "Desk Sergeant" as he is far to busy with personal issues to do the job he is paid for.

If he beleives that by threatening officers, verbally abusing them with profanity and derogatory comments that he will get any of us to produce more contact cards and anovs, then he can beleive that. But, in reality it has having the reverse effect.
This is the lieutenant who supposedly told "truth to power" with his blogging about J-Fled and according to numerous e-mails, spent a year telling all his roll calls to go out and "give the city their 1%" after the last contract.  Now he's drinking the CompStat koolaid.

Desperation for numbers leads to crap like this:
  • I have family on the job,and just a question, aunt and I flew in to Midway airport, aunt has heart condition felt pressure, they called the Chicago fire dept,we land the fire dept was top notch, checked everything then another guy with a department of aviation police patch took aunts drivers license, and wrote a report then a Chicago police officer came took drives license and made a contact card! Are these contact cards held in a data base for criminal checks? Why if someone gets sick does the fire department, the aviation police and Chicago police make reports? I hope my elderly aunt is not penalized for being sick!
A contact card on an ambulance run?  Have the Midway people lost their minds?  Or is this an aftereffect of having to work for Mrs. Ric Flair for so long?

Just when you think it can't get any goofier, it does. Can anyone spell "quotas?"  And can anyone tell the class what quotas lead to?

I work midnights in 006 and I have had no problem with my partner and neither has many of the people I work with. I have been here through Doty and Eddie. I have worked for Glenn, Marado and the like. I have enough time to bid to any District, but I choose to stay here. We do have an issue with getting time off at the last minute, but the bosses here all try and work with us. I have seen this across the board. I am also an ex union Unit Rep, so I am aware of issues relative to the contract. This sounds like he has an issue with our Watch Commander or whatever they are called now. She does need a personality but I don't agree with one officer having an issue and turning it into a distrct problem.

Ummmm welcome to the party... 008 had to do this back in August. It's not isolated its a order from downtown to split up cars and put three people on a car. My partner and I worked together for 11 years same day offs and same car now we can't. We have people bouncing in twice a week now. Killed morale

I will tell you one thing and it is the truth. If ALL of us officers on 2nd watch would come in with zeros it would have a chilling affect on the IDIOT LT!!!!!

Only problem is too many idiots on the watch don't wanna lose their starting time, their sector car, their school spot, they don't wanna lose their position inside and go out on the street. All we have to do is ban together, but it won't happen. The city has divided us and we are a bunch of school children being bullied by the DSS, formerly known as the WC.

Well my friends, I don't care what time I start, I don't care what car I am on and I don't care for quotas. Go find a tow, go lock someone up or go do a recovered vehicle. You are still doing your job and he can't say shit to you.

Now go rip on me saying I don't know shit, I am bitter and I am lucky to have this job. All I know is I don't care and I am not gonna get bullied into getting contact cards and ANOVs. i aint no 3 year wonder scared of losing my day spot. Answer my calls and bring in some bullcrap activity to show I did something.

Whole dept is a joke. I am just the clown with a badge and a gun. I don't give a flying f**k

Even the Superintendent knows. Now go throw your rock and hide your hand some more. In response to the 1st complaint from 006 When I was on midnights, (and this goes back probably 12 years) We always had a third person on our car and we were all One D.O.G. apart. There were a Very Select few that had the same D.O.G and those were 04 cars who were in civil. dress usually... If I recall correctly they wanted PO's to be one day apart for "beat integrity" so someone at the B.S beat meetings knew what was going on any given night, and the 3 PO's were to communicate with each other about beat problems.

And regarding 6 people for Time Due:
That has been going on even before the New Year took affect, although our DSS has been pretty good after the XO said he would allow the Lt. to grant time off as long as the cars were manned.

Nobody documents any meetings>>>

To my brothers on the beat document these orders! And i mean right them down word for word time place and witness.

The exempts are playing fast and loose.

as you all have witnessed you can be sued for even letting mental prisoner walk free from the station.

And not receiving time off... its not medical abuse if you have a headache.

once those medical number go up watch and see ur x-o or whatever they are calling themselves this week.

Right up like spars take up white shirts time because they try and make it sound like your insubordinate. Just go with the flow and back up your partner

Ill say it loud and clear for everyone to hear. Lt. S has no business managing people. She is a terrible boss, and has zero people skills. 006th District first watch has been ruined by her ego. The best thing that could happen here is to dump her and the commander. Both are a cancer in this once great district.

Starting the 6th Period, Public Transportation will be reporting out of the Merchandise Mart. The Area Deputy Chief will have too many officers reporting to the same building in the next few periods and the room is needed. The move will coincide with the Acting Commander being moved as she was only placed in Public Transportation as a last minute substitute to the old Commander being suddenly removed last Friday without sufficient planning. The Acting Commander will end up just fine as usual. Also the strong possibility that Public Transportation will be all voluntary employment by officers on their day off funded by the Feds and Keating.

I worked at o'hare, we had to do contact cards and so did Aviation and fire. This practice has been in effect since 1990. Most cards were tossed in a drawer and when it got full were tossed out.I don't know what they do now but it was SOP all the time I was there. I always thought it was redundant that so many reports were made, My guess is that it was done to make sure you answered the call even though you came up w/the code 19-X.

To the poster in 006. Not trying to be the salty veteran, just offering a little advice. If I read this right, you are on midnights, you just split up (in-voluntarily) with your partner, and you've been denied time. The answer is don't do anything. Unless you are trying to get a management spot on a different watch, just answer the radio, back up your fellow p.o.'s and do the necessary reports when needed. What are they going to do to you? Dump you to midnights? You're already there. Split you and your partner up? They already have. Deny you time? They already did. If they want you to come in with 10 contact cards, tell them you want to see it in writing. No boss will ever sign their name to anything like that because they know. There isn't a general order out there that says you have to write xx amount of movers, parkers, ANOV's, contact cards, etc... If a sgt. or above "orders" you to do something like that, get his/her name, rank, star, and put it in the narrative that they ordered you to write it. Contact your unit rep. The Union can't do anything about car assignments or partners, but they can do stuff when it comes to contract violations and things of that nature. Good luck.

You're on 1st watch in 006.....what could they possibly do to you ???
Tough it out w/o your partner/car/start time for 3 mos w/ no activity and the mgt will buckle.
If they treat you like you are retarded, act retarded. I work in a north side dist. Where you are asigned according to your percieved level of competence. Handle your calls w/o calling for a sgt....20 sector. Call for a sgt every job & 10 sector w/ reassignment of complicated jobs.
Unfuckingbelievable !

DUTY TRADE DUTY TRADE DUTY TRADE, better start trying it than bitching about it, was expanding to all of Area South.

Its divide and conquer by MCDOPE... They cant make you find activity, its also still within your right to verbally admonish the citizen, if the BOSS wants a fucking citation put it in writing that I no longer have discretion... And we are operating on a quota system. This is the same shit the NYPD guys been bitching about for years, their laws and department rules are a lot different than ours

As far as man power it just makes sense to have 3 officers assigned to a car because it shows exactly how low your watch is on man power. The boss did the same thing in 025 a few years ago. At first it sucked but by doing this the Capt was able to show the commander just how low we were on man power. we ended getting a few more bodies and time due became easier to get.

006 is now a joke! All the great bosses left and unfortunately were replaced with complete morons. . When 006 was visited by McCarthy, he was shocked that the morale was so great and p.o.'s were enjoying working. He said he had visited alot of districts and 006 had the best morale he had seen. He was so impressed, he took our bosses, promoted them all, and gave us all bosses who never were the police and treat po's like shit. Morale was destroyed! These new bosses have no clue how to be the police or supervise. The po's in 006 have no confidence in our bosses. We are being told NOT to respond to shots fired calls unless the responding car asks for help. We cant back up other cars on other jobs unless they ask for an assist. What kind of policing is that?? They make recruits drive around three deep with FTO's in cage cars. To all the bosses in 006, STOP MICRO MANAGING US!!! WE HAVE LOST OUR CONFIDENCE IN YOU, AND THAT IS A FAILURE IN LEADERSHIP!!!!! You have great officers in 006, let us do our job! It's gonna be a long summer if things remain the same.

I've spent most of my career in an area 2 district. It's always been common knowledge- get a 3 man car and space your DOG's so that you all work with each other in rotation. Though I HAVE come across people on a watch who have double finding 2 people who would like to work with them. My advice- stop being THAT GUY and find a 3rd for your car.

I'll tell ya what's happening in 006. IT SUCKS! It used to be one of the best places on the south side to work and now it is bar none, THE WORST place to work!

It stems from the commander who is an introvert! Now it's understood that one commander will have an entirely different effect on the morale of a district, however, it's as bad as I've ever seen it. Even Doty was better than this guy. At least he would acknowledge you in the hallways.

Eddie Johnson was an absolute prince. Of course he is no longer there and things change. But at least under Eddie, if you needed a day off it was no big deal and things would get worked out. He would come in and tell us that we're doing a good job and he knows how brutal is is out there, but keep doing what we're doing and back each other up and that he appreciates us. That goes a LONG way. It's only January and most people who need time off are burning through personal days at an alarming rate because their days off are being denied. Yes, Sgts, furlough, IOD, medical, and military leave are included in the 6 off on any given day maximum. Is that even in accordance with the G.O.?

The morale is terrible. Partnerships have been broken up, day off groups changed, and severe micromanagement. Any little benefits of working in the worst of districts have been stripped. At least after a work week of humping and answering dozens of bull shit baby mama drama jobs, shootings, robberies, physical altercations with combative arrestees etc., you knew that you might be given a little lee way on getting a slip approved for a day off. People are scrambling to find people to do the tour of duty exchange in order to get a day off to attend a wedding or go out of town.

Something as simple as a fucking BEAT TAG is being blown out of proportion. Granted, how the fuck do so many beat tags go missing? But of all things to worry about, these little pieces of fucking rectangular plastic have been a thorn in the side of po's for the last several weeks. "hold me down in 006 squad, I'm trying to make a beat tag." A few crafty officers on third watch were able to go out and purchase plexiglass and whittle their own fucking beat tags and spray paint them black just so they don't have to kill time finding an odd one-off beat tag and making it into the respective beat's beat number. Yes, it has gotten that bad.

Stand up inspection 7 days a week. Yes, scrutinized for every little uniform infraction. We're 21 days into the new year and over a hundred shot, but goddammit you've better got a fucking high gloss shine on your shoes and a baby's ass close shave or otherwise you're written up. And don't get me started on a certain new Sgt. who we finally got off of midnights. He's 3rd watch's problem now. Sorry guys and gals! Talk about micro-managing! It's nerve wracking doing a traffic stop and worrying about officer safety when you've got a sgt with a clipboard making notations on your uniform behind you...mind you offering NO assistance whatsoever to your stop. It's like having an inspector ride on your jobs.

With nowhere to bid for another month again and nowhere to go, they know they've got us by the short and curlies and are just making life a living hell.

I was told a story by a po recently about a visit from McCarthy to the 006th district and he wanted to know why there was so much laughter and comraderie in the hallways of the 006th district. The answer by the then 3rd watch W/C (who is also onto bigger and better things) replied that it was because when you take care of the troops, they take care of you. And THAT we did. Work was plentiful and busy, but always fun. The Supt. also said that other districts it was like walking into a wake and it was silent and not a lot of laughter or talking. Well, 006 is no longer like that. The life blood has been sucked from it and it's no longer enjoyable and things are being forced upon us that would not be so bad to deal with had there been a little give and take. Nobody is asking for much, just for the day off for the one off family function which we could use earned compensatory time, a little laying off the constant verbal abuse, the daily stand up inspections to berate po's on their uniforms, and maybe an "atta boy" once in awhile in roll call instead of the doom and gloom speeches that we've been getting.

Work with us, not against us.

"Closed Door Meeting" is a chicken-shit way of telling the P.O.'s "Yeah fuck you blue-shirt. Your word against mine that I said something inappropriate. Prove it or get fucked."

That's not supervision... That's being a Kool-Aid swilling punk and a bully.

DO NOT "STEP AROUND THE CORNER" OR CLOSE ANY DOOR FOR A "CHAT" WITH THESE HORRIBLE STUPIDVISORS!

Make them say what they need to say in front of witnesses...

You younger officers need to fight back against these people pushing you to do unethical/illegal shit to make THEM look good while you're ending up sitting on the federal court shit-stool.

Since FOP seems to be waiting for permission to do "something," (GOD only knows what) and Policemen are by themselves against these wretched bosses; we strongly suggest you guys pool your money and look into hiring Private Investigators to "get in the waistbands" and into the lives of these miserable fucks who would starve to death if they had only their Police pedigree to eat with.

There is no law and no directive that says you can't do this to be protect yourselves from these wretched, crazy people.

P.I.'s can do all sorts of fun shit to get all sorts of fun information that can be "forwarded" to "parties of interest."

These stupidvisors will "sue for peace" when the first plain envelope with pictures start showing up.

A damning indictment when the supervisory and command echelon decides to turn their guns on the people who make this damned thing go.

Kind of like when the Russians turned their guns on conscripts and made them charge head-on into Wehrmacht machinegun fire... Or else... Empty-handed...

Simple solution: kindly ask the requesting Bosshole that they put their activity requests/demands ON PAPER. "Sure, "El Tee", just list what and how many of each you want and I'll get right on it".

When they balk and say "it's not me, it's the ___________ requesting this", ask them to ask them to put THAT on paper. When they refuse to honor your request, simply go about your daily routine and wait for some Dumbfuck Meritcloutorious supervisor to initiate the paper trail rope that they'll eventually be hanging themselves with.

Don't let the threat of being taken off "your" car deter you. By contract, they can't switch your start time by more than 2 hours each way from day to day without you making time-and-a-half for your inconvenience. The car assignments are made out monthly, so you'll still be assigned to beat XX13... at least for the duration of that month.

Document everything pertinent and keep a journal of interactions that supervisors may initiate with you "off the record". Refuse to be cajoled into closed-door meetings to handle things "in-house" without at least one person you trust present as a witness.

In response to 006 District issue, the same thing is happening with officers in 008 on 3rd watch. Regular partners were told to find a third person, expect to have RDO changed...all for the sake of beat integrity (so they say). And these changes have been implemented. We are also limited to the amount of people taking time due, especially if it is on Fri, Sat, Sun. Our district commander limits the time due because "he wants" a certain amount of officers on the roster per start time. And I agree, morale is at an all time low. When the bosses fuck with us, take away the little that we have and yet expect us to be productive for them...where's the incentive for us? There aren't any. Maybe they don't seem to realize this because ultimately they have their own agenda to tend to and we are just blue shirts to be treated like bitches. I think it's obvious to everyone that this is definitely not the way to motivate officers and productivity will plummet just like morale.

How ever the newly promoted Sgt M on third watch is gonna get him self hurt. This fool was a po in Iad or the inspector generals office or something like that. He has made it his personal business to make coppers life hell. He told the people on midnights his first day as a sgt they will not like him.. He has since flexed and flexed and flexed his muscles. Writing coppers up for bull shit. Hey asshole you are wrong 50 percent of the time so far you have pulled your bs on young coppers. I hope you do it to me if you do I will get paid. Then I will file a beef for a hostile work environment. You better not call a 10-1 because people may not show up. I heard that you called for an assist and no was available already. As a supervisor your job is to be there to guide your people not to set out to fuck them over because they have a uniform infraction or have bad grammar on a report.

>>And can anyone tell the class what quotas lead to?<<

Yes. I can firmly assure you that - given these facts - it appears to be a variant of the marxist Cloward-Piven Strategy which has been well documented in several journalistic invetstigations.

First proposed in 1966 and named after Columbia University marxists Richard Andrew Cloward and Frances Fox Piven, the Strategy seeks to hasten the fall of Capitalism by overloading the government bureaucracy with a flood of impossible demands, thus pushing society into crisis and economic collapse.

In their 1966 article, Cloward and Piven charged that the ruling classes used welfare to weaken the poor; that by providing a social safety net, the rich doused the fires of rebellion.

The key to sparking this rebellion would be to expose the inadequacy of the Welfare State.

Obviously, in the variant as employed by McMarxist and Rham, the key is to spark anti police rebellions by exposing the inadequacy of the Police force (which they themselves precipitated)

Ill say it loud and clear for everyone to hear. Lt. S has no business managing people. She is a terrible boss, and has zero people skills. 006th District first watch has been ruined by her ego. The best thing that could happen here is to dump her and the commander. Both are a cancer in this once great district.

Why dont you PO's start exchanging contact card info with eachother. Build up a stack of duplicates to hit your quotas. Nobody says they have to be real cards, just that you have to turn them in. Can you make up names? Maybe have a contest to see who can submit the most ridiculous card. Make it fun. But what do I know. 006 is a shitty place to work and the issue is that Johnson hung out, drank, let the women tell him what to do and let all of us sergeants and above be run by the whiners. Those same worthless officers are mad now because the new guy reads between the lines, holds people accountable, and doesn't let the same crew hide inside. This is BS. He runs this place as a place of business should be run. We have one BS lieutenant who is scared of her shadow. Half of the District is women, so what did you expect. Time off is due to no police, we get no help like 007 who just pushed their savages all over this District and the city keeps moving more and more savages into this place. We have always led the city, for at least all the years I've been here. Nothing new. Descent place for the working cop.

The issues in 006 have nothing to do with the Commander, lieutenants or sergeants. It's the lazy ass police, the new sergeants and the superintendent keeps telling us and the media we don't need more police. This is a poor community with worthless alder creatures and a hand full of officers to make this shit work. Look at it when Eddie was here. Crime was fucked up, the District ran itself, he kissed every ministers ass, especially Fleger until he got out of here. The same shit 006 is famous for was going on at full speed. I'm glad to tell you that I am now a part of the KMA club, this crap is short lived and pretty soon I'm going to do a Green in roll call. Write that stopping and talking to someone for no reason and asking them for i.d. would be a violation of civil rights. Cite the court decision re: the NYPD version of contact cards.

The same thing happened in 009 with the partners, pretty much the 3rd man on a car I think helps to balance the sheets not to mention it probably helps with shortage of cars. Breaking up partners ...the watch commander figures if your not bringng in activity then why do you the favor and let you partner up, it's just a punishment tool. As far as activity...if your pulled in and talked to or told at roll call or in person to write contact cards or parkers keep record of this, the date time location and who. Things may come to a head and FOP may have to follow a law suit and if they don't ACLU will certainly get involved, so if there is a collective record of these demands across the districts or specific districts and officers show record of it...the department will suffer greatly with lawsuits and with the minority public. KEEP A JOURNAL!!!

I've been retired 3 months and I feel great! It is amazing to read that shit keeps getting worse on CPD.

From people I have spoken to this is how it is on NYPD. Everyone is afraid of the next higher level of supervision and people are under stress at all times lest they get dumped, chewed out etc. Bosses are under extreme pressure to produce and that causes phony numbers, more than we already get, and outright violating people's rights.

CPD got the worst possible boss at the exact worst time it it's history. McCarthy needs to go and real soon. If he is as big a jerk as everyone says, and that seems truthful, then someone ought to be able to middle that somabitch real good like.

Show the prick he isn't the only one who can stick a man's dick in the mud. Show him some good old fashioned Chicago love for a fucking rat bastard.

Fuck him right in his ass, hard and quick. You can't tell me he is living an exemplary life. If so, then where is his family?

Intravert my ass. The real issue in 006 is that folks are pissed that Carter does not fall prey to the culture of CPD as did all of our previous commanders, and esepcially our Superintendent. He does his job in a professional manner, he always looks the part, he stays out of the District shit that does not involve his level, he practices what he preaches, he does not let the preachers and the alderman run the district like Doty and Johnson, he did not let Captain Wedster continue to run over the working police because we would not kiss her ass and he takes care of the workers. I have never worked inside, I don't have to kiss any boss ass, I am the street police, I have been the police in 5 different districts and units and this is the first time I worked for someone I respected. In fact the cool aid drinking sgt are supporting the XO and also warning the troops about what will happen if they bring in no activity. When did quotas return?

And what exactly did they say would happen? what was the "or else?" Sounds like threats. Go ahead, let them write people up. That will just bury them all in paper. You think they want that? Show up on time, have your uniform straight. Don't give them any ammo. And keep track of what they say to you and whether any write-ups are in retaliation for you not meeting their illegal "quotas."

I had to chuckle at the remarks about the beat tags, because I remember the same complaints twenty years ago. However, it goes to the heart of the problem. To this day many people on the job fail to get it that beat tags are on the car for a good reason. But there will always be those that feel that they are special and aren't required to have one. And you have to make one because, most probably, one of your co-workers stole it. Unfortunate that there is so much down time dealing with this issue, but it is certainly nothing new.

Yea, there is something we can do - stick together and stop working VRI and special. We would then have the city by the balls. But since most everybody is all about 'me' expect much more of the same and worse.

So the ultimate answer is WE ARE COMPLETELY SCREWED.

If only the bosses could be firm but fair and stand-up for their people like Chief Boden of Chicago Fire or Lt. Van Buren of Law & Order. But it's wishful thinking here at the C.P.D.
And when the leaders have no
vision, the troops and the programs perish. They (the bosses)make the duties unncesarily difficult to perform and expect 100% loyalty and compliance from the officers and wonder why
morale is low. Support the officers on the street because they are literaly putting their lives on the line for the city and are being kicked in the behind if they go above and beyond or manage to err. Either way they lose. Stay safe, watch your back, your partners back, and especially your surroundings.

What's happening in 006 is the same thing that's happening citywide. The deliberate disassembly and distruction of the CPD.

As stated elsewhere, this is a deliberate act committed for the express purpose of adding to the burden placed upon government.

Obama's brownshirts aren't far off. The subsidized money lost for local police is replaced with nothing BUT federal money given directly to municipalities to pay for Federal police. Emanuel will skim far more money for himself from the larger chunk of federal money than he ever was by overbilling the cititzens of Chicago alone.

And the best part: ONCE YOUR PENSION GOES FEDERAL, ILLINOIS CONSTITUTIONAL PROTECTIONS FOR IT DISAPPEAR.

The Federal government constantly steals and diminishes pensions for federal employees.

You will find yourself being a democrat whether you like it or not because you'll DEPEND on democrats to keep giving you your pension money.

Now the bosses that are claiming that P.O.s need to do a certain amount if anything is bullshit and if you're on midnights in 006 and u are getting denied personals and partner requests and still do this YOU'RE a FUCKING MORON and part of the problem. The city has a major boss issue, in that very few have any managerial skills. Realistically what kind of idiot must you be to tell guys working midnights in 006 that they can't get a Pday in February and then expect them to work for you? I assume most 1st watch coppers in 006 have very little time and still think doing something will make a difference for their careers or they still have pride in their job. I have 14 years and while not a crazy amount of time, I stopped giving a fuck about white shirts and what they said about 8 or so years ago. Well, I have a lot of time on this job and I can tell you that the department has always been a shambles as far back as I can recall. Most of the officers on the watch did little or no work: some were protected and did not care, some just did not care. When they went to straight watch the department lost the ability to force the do nothings to do some work. Now you have a boss you is forcing some accountability and the complaints are numerous. As a long time watch commander, I don't see what the problem is with what they are doing in 006. This is a common, long-standing practice. Since we went to straight watches in 1994, there have been three officers in staggered DOGs assigned to each car. This is simply how you do the monthly watch sheets and balance the cars, and it makes it easier to to the Daily Assignment Sheets.

It sounds to me like 006 was doing it wrong, and is not in line with the rest of the city.

Since the start of the first period this year, they have stripped everybody of their partners. Officers who were in the same day off group and worked everyday together were told we couldn't do this anymore. We were told to find a third partner. So basically I had to leave my partner I worked with everyday for the past 3 years.

"Basically" your a fucking idiot. No one told you to leave your partner right? They told you to add one into the rotation right? Guess what? If you had more than three years as a Chicago Police Officer you'd know we used to rotate three officers years ago. God forbid they'd ask you to work 99. You would probably piss your pants and then call FOP to change your diaper.

I will tell you one thing and it is the truth. If ALL of us officers on 2nd watch would come in with zeros it would have a chilling affect on the IDIOT LT!!!!!

Only problem is too many idiots on the watch don't wanna lose their starting time, their sector car, their school spot, they don't wanna lose their position inside and go out on the street...

And if you had a "spot" you'd kiss the the ring too. So shut the fuck up! FYI, most people on the watch who bring in numbers, do so because they need to in order to get whatever overtime they can get. People have FAMILIES to take care of. College tuitions to pay. Mortgages. Retirements to prepare for. If you want to engage in some bullshit, meaningless protest, have at it. But don't assume that you can ask the next man to do at to detriment of his family.

The problems with 011 start at the top. The commander has lost control. It seems that he too joined the ranks of only caring about preserving his spot at all cost. He has little idea of what is going on in his district and doesn't seem to care. Things on all the watches are swirling down the toilet and little is being done to address it. Shame too, he was once a good boss. Now everyone is looking to exit to other places.

Having been a Sgt for 16 yrs, I'm embarrassed that these asshole Sgt's and Lt's treat the troops this way. Don't paint all "supervisors" with the same brush. STAND TOGETHER! I don't understand it. Maybe it's because I've never worked anything but the street in a district in my 27 yr career.
Remember, your goal as you hit the street is to make sure you and every Officer on your watch is standing at check-off in the same condition you left roll-call in.
They need you more than you need them. These idiots do not understand that you attract more bees with honey than with vinegar.

For years 006 was the best kept secret on the south side. Even under Doty, it was never this bad. Carter, if he bothers to show up to something, will not speak to the officers on scene. He parks his unmarked in the impound garage at the rear of the building, so no one knows when he is in house. Isn't there a rule somewhere about that? Carter never addresses role calls and never bothers to come hear what the officers have to say. The XO is a good guy, but has his hands tied, and the WCs are tied up as well. The Sergeants are great except for a couple of the new ones. One is out to make his bars over the bodies of the officers, even though he just got his stripes and won't see bars for years. Officers are so fed up and morale is so low it will not recover for years.
FTOs are three deep, which in some slow districts may be ok, and might even be ok when it is 13 degrees in 006. This, however, will not be safe as soon as the spring thaw starts. The entire district is worried about the safety of the recruits and FTOs. Except the bosses, bars and above.
RDO exchanges are the only thing saving us. I have never checked the money box more than a couple of times. Now I check it every time, because they don't let me take time, so screw it, pay me.
The lieutenants, even though their hands are to some degree tied, are going one step further. One even had the audacity to state in roll calls "Do not call a 10-1, access the situation and decide how many cars you need." WHAT? If I'm taking a beat down from a shit head, I need ALL the cars. All the cars from 006, 004, 007, 003, 022, and anywhere else!! And if I need one, I will call a 10-1 and he can go screw himself. As he has never been out on the street in 006, and never worked south side before, he is clueless. I can not wait until summer. He's going to lose his mind! Oh, and if someone on the east side of the district calls a 10-1, west side cars can't go and vice versa. He is so far out of touch, he might be on another planet!
And as for the beat tag stuff, yes 3rd watch officers made their own. Even have their star numbers engraved on them. How pathetic is that?
This could go on and on with complaints. But I'm sure someone else will give more highlights.

Because, when the police do police work it costs the taxpayers money in frivolous lawsuits. Honestly , the bosses would rather you have 10 contact cards than a good pinch. That's why you don't ask for sh*t on this job- partners, cars, start times- with exception of time cuz your family comes before this dump of a department. If you don't have anything, they cannot take anything away from you. Stop bitching about being torn away from your partner of X amount of years- the bromance is over. I know it sux having to work with unsafe, incompetent people- we've all had to do it. Understand this- they do not care because they are not in the car with those people, and they don't have to work them. It is not their lives at risk- they will wait until someone gets shot or dies before taking any action, and even then, they just ship them out somewhere else. When you're stuck with one just have the mindset of being 99. Our lackluster union needs to hire a real lawyer and have some clauses included in our GOs about guaranteed rights of P.O.s- specifically regarding issues like this. They need to scrap that whole "officers may (insert action here) at the discretion of the district cmdr, capt, sup" - our whole existence on this job is at someone else's discretion. That crap has got to go- and that's problem no. 1 on this dept. Next, significantly reduce management spots to 5% per watch or eliminate them all together- you've got guys with 10 yrs on being dumped to midnites while guys with 4 or 5 years are staying on the watch- total joke. No one whose made it through have their career already should have to deal with that crap.

Wow! I'd do it! She ordered you to do it. Of course put her name in the report

1/22/2013 07:49:00 AM

The only direct order that you can refuse is an illegal one.

If you can justify why you refused an order to write a CC (such as listing officers not on scene, listing erroneous information, etc.) then flatly refuse the order - preferably in the presence of witnesses - and be sure to loudly and clearly verbalize why the order is illegal:

"So you're ordering me to file a false report by including "Officer Jones" on said report even though s/he is/was on another [electronically document & retrieveable] assignment in no way associated with this incident?"

Refuse the illegal order and let the jackass goldstar giving the illegal order initiate summary punishment. Hopefully (and realistically) he or she will be dumb enough to delegate another supervisor(s) to assist in jamming you; the more dummies involved means it's more likely they'll contradict each other or confirm their stupidity and violations come federal trial time.

Immediately contact the union and secure outside counsel familiar with Civil Rights and workplace/contract law.

Hmmm, very eloquent post.

How exactly is the Marine Unit going to power their police boat up to the 7th and 8th floor of that high rise? Because that is where the fire was. 6700 block of South Shore Drive. Now just because the building has a view of the lake doesn't mean the Marine Unit can power across over 100 feet of solid land including city streets with their boat and then up the front of the building to the 7th and 8th floor.

And then what would they do? Anchor up the boat to maybe the 9th floor? And it is a police boat, not a fire boat. No water to fight a fire. Minor detail, I know.

But don't let that stand in the way of a good bash. You might have a little woodie for the Marine Unit and better you get it out of your system here on anono-blog than go talk to the person who might be the object of your grudge.

OK, good work Dudley, you win, damn right, oooooh, darn Marine Unit, arghhhhh!

Bad bosses usually have one thing in common. They all came from "spots."

Places like the Mounted Unit or Traffic Administration.

Most bad bosses have never been the police.

it is not a quota if you go to work for 9 hours a day and expect to do something come on are you kidding me 5 contact cards 1 Parker two movers? it takes you that long? 9 hours to actually produce this amount of activity? wow what is the world coming to when you're expected to do something for your 80,000 dollars a year?I suppose just showing up to work on time, NOT! answering your jobs is plenty in between all your texting and internet use on your cell phones. poor privileged babies expect to come to work and get paid for doing absolutely nothing my heart just bleeds for you. I suspect that the 20 percent management on most watches carries the activity for the entire watch. why don't you spend some time checking those stats?

1/22/2013 11:30:00 AM

You're missing the point. McStupe wants these contact cards no matter what. He doesn't care the NYPD version of our contact cards, "stop and frisk", was determined to be unconstitutional and NYPD was ordered to stop the practice IMMEDIATELY. And yes, showing up on time in uniform and doing your job by answering calls is all you have to do--that's why there is no quota system for parkers, movers, or bus checks, etc. Go write 1,000 contact cards if you want. Don't denigrate people who don't do them and won't do them to satisfy some bullshit theory that McStupid has thrown his support behind. You go company guy. See how that works for ya.

1/22/2013 10:23:00 AM

Yeah, well go watch the beating he takes at Compstat some time. No matter what he does McStupid doesn't care and is never, ever, ever satisfied. And 011 is up all the time! You'd give up too. Until you stood in those shoes, don't judge. Just be glad he's not taking it out on the patrol guys.

Lt MS yells at anyone on 3rd watch who comes in with a late arrest. She will scream that she is not gonna pay any overtime. She then says that one of her midnight cars will do the arrest. She is a terrible boss that don't have a clue

1/22/2013 10:01:00 AM

Refuse to handle an arrest you didn't initiate. Simple. Or document in the paper that you were ordered to handle it, even though you have no direct knowledge of the circumstances. And make sure you put her name on the report in caps, as ordering you to do it.

Beat integrity? Yeah, right. Since this whole thing started in 006 the dispatchers still haven't followed beat integrity. As far as them getting permission from a supervisor to send a car off the beat, it ain't happenin''.

1/22/2013 09:30:00 AM

That was another thing McGoober bitched about at Compstat--make sure the first line supervisors aren't letting dispatchers assign cars off their beat. Um, what does he expect them to do then? Let jobs sit? And if you guys come up off something to handle a job, you're part of the problem and are playing on McStupid's team.

It was always supposed to be that way. 3 people assigned to a car in staggering day off groups so someone is always off. The new kids just feel entitled, and don't have a clue. 006 is trying to correct itself.

In 006 on midnights the only guys who love the LT is the 606 team mind you they start work at 2030 hours And leaves at 0300 hours or 0400 hours. They don't even work a full tour on their Friday. On their Friday they leave even earlier. The 606 team use to start at 2100 hrs back in like July but that was changed because we started to get yelled at for also coming in early and when we said well what about the 606 team they already left, we were told worry about your self. I hate working in 006 the morale is totally fucked up there unless the LT loves you, you love working there other than that don't get me started. Please send an inspector or IAD so they can see that I'm not lying. You will always see the 606 team on midnights never work a full tour..

"...there is no such offense as attempted battery..."

Illinois Compiled Statutes 720 Chapter 5 Section 8-4 specifically allows for the charge of attempt as long as there is a substantial step towards completing the criminal act.

Ask for 10 contact cards a day, and they will become like the curfews of old. Everyone will make them up. The city will have a useless database of fictional characters.
Ask for 5 parking cites a day, and PO's will hit every abandoned car on the streets. No revenue will be generated.
Arrest juveniles for no other reason than to put a dot on a map, and crime will eventually rise.
we have gotten the Police Department our Supervisors deserve. Let them wallow in it. I'm glad thay are so stressd out. Let Mc Dumbass yell and stress them out some more...then when it rolls downhill, say "Yeah, but crime is still down, Right...???

You all know why it's like this and why this will never change. There will always be coppers out here that talk a big game and will come in with a bunch of bs which includes contacts, curfews, Parker's, movers and anovs. We are our own worst enemy. We can't stick together worth a damn and you're only as strong as your weakest link. People bitch and moan and still write all this shit because they wanna be on an early car or tact or whatever bullahit team they make up next. And honestly I'm not mad at you. Especially when you have to drive 2 hours to get to work to 5 when you live way north. You can't fix this problem. It won't go away. People have their own agendas and their own lives. It is what it is. This is like the twentieth post about this I've read and shit never changes. Just saying.

You see, This is a reason that you have a unit FOP rep, he is supposed to make sure that the contract is abided for by all parties, yes. Lt. andrews in 11 is the W/C, but that gives him no right to berate any police officer, this is just a tactic used by BULLIES, to intimidate poor officers who refuse to stand up for themselves, or are afraid to do so. You guys need to call him out,in a respectful way and tell him that you WILL NOT be talked to like a child, fuck all these no balls bosses. I am a Sgt. who has always taken care of the troops and I am glad that my time is very very near, I can't deal with the spineless bosses and I just may punch the fuckout of one of them prior to my departure.
