56 FTO's

We got word from someone at the Academy that 56 FTO's showed up to take the classes. This is after 118 individuals were listed on the Personnel Order.

47%. Of course, that's pending completing the classes, graduating and accepting the assignment, something that caused half a class to quit a few years ago.

And how are the FTO's filling their time at the Academy?

They don't even have a curriculum for 40% of the time.

Wow, outside of Snelling (who is a merit hack) I have not heard of ANY of the other instructors.

That seems odd to me with almost 20 years on.

Have any of these instructors been the real police?? Been to 26th and Cal?? Been sued??

I think not.

And people wonder why this department is going down hill.

And please, do not comment that Snelling is a great guy. He is a merit hack, nothing more.

Imagine that!

A ship without a rudder. The Field Training Officer molds and guides a newly minted officer into a working copper in theory. If the FTO and the FTO program are shit, expect the next thirty years of coppers to be worth shit!

Not rocket science, I often wonder how I survived my Patrol Specialist.

I'm guessing that the "TBA" was really suppose to be "GTBA" but the type they used was to big to fit it all.

So what's GTBA? Gone To Buy Ammo I guess.

Looking at the ftos in 004 I just could not imagine signing up and becoming one of them. Recruits need to know how to cover their ass and work safely. Not to get free pop and wuss their way out of jobs. No wonder the new recruits are afraid of their shadow. I feel sorry for the new guys... But its not like things were any better 15 years ago. Who would sign up for this spot? No partner, no friends, no clue, no experience, no training, and just plain lazy. I had 5 different ftos and 2 of them were outstanding. To this day they save my ass with the things they taught me. The other three? I thought they were criminals, trying not to arrest or make a report. We are screwed. Go to 87/stony on midnights. You see them all there, all night, whole shift, not moving, and just clowning.

"56 FTO's"

56 people without enough time to bid out of the ghetto on a monthly bid saw greener pastures - at first. They hadn't yet figured out that the Lion's Share of them would be sent to the ghetto anyway. Perhaps angling for a change of watch and scenery?

56 Dummies that that should've taken their cue from the other 62 that took the test and said "Fuck That Noise" when they actually ran the numbers and logistics involved and came up with the final product that had them on the losing end of the FTO equation.

And a tip for those in charge of this catastrophe of a program: the greener pasture has been revealed a mirage; expect more than a handful of these FTO's-in-training to decline the position at the conclusion of this 3 Week syllabus of "T.B.A.".

Ya see, "word on the skreet" is several plan to return to their current unit now that they realize that they don't have the seniority/juice to get one of the few spots in the more "desirable" training districts. They are enjoying this "training" as a three week vacation away from the daily grind of humping from job to job.

This is FACT, but you didn't hear it from me [wink, wink!].

Considering the bullshit that HR has done to the academy and considering that the academy does not have a leader, Snelling has done a great job with recruits. There is a reason no one wants to be assigned to the academy. Still the sgts there are task with bullshit and no leader to guide them. The last 4 or 5 times the department made noise about rebooting the FTO program and taking field training seriously?

The department thoroughly shit on it and shit on the people who tried to give it a shot.

Same thing here...

It seems like they pull this shit the same time of year too...

Right before the Spring & Summer Shit-Head Offensive.

They sell these guys a bill of goods then they shanghai them to other districts then try to turn off the bids for the summer killing season so nobody can escape back to where they came from.

If they were serious... They would and COULD do much more to attract first rate people.

Remember when CPD made noise about a pay and grade differential among Patrolmen for education and training like LAPD? (early-mid 80's?)

It fell by the wayside because the clouted CPD birth-righters and their backers didn't want a bunch of "regular guys" getting this fast track to promotional opportunities.

Just like the couple of occasions where Sergeants classes and the one Lieutenants class we can recall were waved off?

*Who da fuck are deez guyz? We don't know nunna dem!*

Field Training is unfortunately an afterthought.

It strikes a nerve when instead of praising other POs on, we spend more time downplaying other POs in a negative way. All the negative responders, did you take the test and if you did, did you not pass it? This is not the first time the city has not been completely organized so why downplay the POs that successfully passed the test and stepped up to take the PROMOTION because whether it's D2 now and D2a in the future, it's still a PROMOTION. That is all!

4/17/2013 09:15:00 AM

Nope. Nor should it be. Many FTOs are misfits that can't find anyone to put up with them. Many are in it for the money, some pathetic head cases do it for the power they wield over some poor recruit. Many bosses are in it for that same sick reason.

That being said, there are many fine selfless men and women who give of themselves to make some recruit into a similar fine officer. FTO Bob Caviani from 025 is one such fellow.

For FTOs like that, I pray that the meritorious system works the way it should. I know that is not how it is, sadly.

Keep doing what you do best. I hope your future peers are as good as you.

I wish nothing but the best for all involved. I just hope the city doesn't fuck them and try sending them other places other than back to the districts where they came from.

They deserve to go back and they will have to find a way to sweeten the pot to get more ftos because the next few years will pump out quite a large number of ppos and we need that.

And also rumor has it each fto will be training 2 ppos at a time. That's a huge responsibility put on the ftos.

Best of luck to the new ftos. Unless the city has turned over a new leaf I'm afraid the new ftos will get fucked liked the old ones.

Here is my two cents. According to the original message only the top 30% were supposed to make the list. Per SCC about 170 took the test and 118 got called in. Seems off a bit.

Last night in 017, armed robbery occured with three offenders, offenders shoot at a few people and an off duty, before getting into their car to get away, off duty calls it in, comes out as a 10-1, offenders are chased onto edens with off duty and 017 cars, 017 district W/C JS calls it off and leaves the off duty on his own, without any backup chasing these offenders. Eventually State took it over but there was some time the off duty was on his own. Good call Joe.

It wasn't Joe, it was a certain vertically challenged Sgt. acting DSS.

O.T. Any truth to the word that a new Chief of Patrol was made in light of Patterson's departure? Word is a certain Deputy Chief of the south side area is being put in the spot. I guess we will hear at the Comstat meeting. Should be interesting.

OT got an email from a familiar name of an obvious house mouse with little time on job that McCarthy wants unit / district softball teams for his league. Well my district only allows 5 people off a day hardly enough to fill a team. Lets see where this goes.

4/17/2013 08:35:00 AM

So now he wants camaraderie? More likely, he wants photo ops. He wants something to point at, when the stats go bad again. Look at me! They like me! See, I'm not like Jody!
Too late, Garry.

Snelling is one of the better instructors that the Academy has. He may have been a merit selection Sgt., but I've seen a hell of a lot worse...besides, when Snelling got promoted, he went back to ENGLEWOOD. Probably could have gone wherever he wanted.4/17/2013 12:50:00 PM@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@Snelling went to 022 after he was promoted and only for a few weeks. He is a great gym instructor but has No clue what to do as a Sgt. He keeps f nig up at the Academy.Nice guy tho4/17/2013 06:19:00 PM

The original poster just got his "woods" confused. These neighborhoods are all confusing to a new suburbanite.

They better send us back to the units we came from

If they don't they can have my spot and the spot of several others. I won't go train in another district.

They say fuck you to me I holler it back twice as loud.

The funniest but saddest part of all this is these poor kids think they are actually going back and staying in their district of assignment. You may be going back after training but YOU WILL be reassigned somewhere else.

4/17/2013 02:25:00 PM

I doubt they will even go back. And if they do, it's going to be a long, long time from now.

When I went through the academy 11 years ago, Snelling inspired me to get in shape. I went from 200 to now 140 still today. Which probably saved my life. So you piece of shit don't hide behind your computer screen come forward and let Sgt Snelling know how you feel.

After seeing what has been done to FTOs over the last 30+ years why would anyone good enough/smart enough even take the position?

4/17/2013 01:59:00 PM

I don't know, maybe to actually try to train the new breed correctly and not remain part of the problem.

Snelling was a great guy and probably the only one that really seemed like he cared about keeping the recruits safe. Merit or not, he deserved it.

How is Snelling making mistakes at the academy? Give us examples? He is in charge of 500 recruits without any help. When was the last time one sgt was over such a large group of recruits? He is doing an excellent job and he takes care of his crew. The instructors that work for him are grateful for his leadership. There are a few officers at the academy that keep shooting their mouth off about him and soon you will be exposed. Carma is a bitch!

Yea, you must be one of the instructors with an advanced degree from Lewis. I am sure that Snelling is a great leader. But he is not the only supervisor at the academy.

Snelling had a partner killed. does that count as being the real police? you miserable crusty, salty fuck.

So, if you never heard of someone, they can't be any good, right?
