Lost in the shuffle of the Boston Bombing was this rehash of old news by the Slum-Times:
- One of Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s biggest campaign contributors has the president of the Fraternal Order of Police on his company’s payroll — a relationship that’s come to light as Emanuel and the union try to negotiate a new contract for 10,400 Chicago cops.
The connection between Emanuel donor Howard Labkon and FOP Lodge No. 7 President Michael K. Shields is spelled out in a court case in which Shields got an order of protection last year against an FOP lawyer he said threatened his family after the union stopped giving him business.
Labkon and his family have been major campaign contributors to Emanuel. Altogether, they and their companies have given $156,500 to Emanuel campaign funds, plus another $50,000 to the mayor’s inaugural committee, records show.
Labkon employs Shields and his brother, Officer Daniel J. Shields, to schedule security workers for General Iron Industries, his family’s scrap-metal recycling company on North Clifton, records show.
The article is by Chris Fusco, who after his brilliant work on the Hired Truck scandal, has been the Slum Times most consistent ball-washer of Rahm Emanuel after Fran Spielmann and Frank Main. No article is too pimpy for smearing Rahm's enemies. It's just too bad that the timing was off on this one - it has been driven completely off the Slum Times front page. We had to dig in their archives to find it again after reading it this morning.

What happens if the contract talks extend into next year, and Shields loses the election before the contract is settled? Would the negotiations then have to start over with the newly elected people?
I want the guy that has to be dragged, kicking and screaming, onto the ballot.
we need to ammend the by laws about attending meetings in order to be eligible for office. I may not want to vote for someone who doesnt go to meetings. But that person should be allowed to run

I'm an old timer and I've had my disagreements with the Shields team. That being said, I work a second job and I sure don't agree with the guy who I work for. But I have mouths to feed. My kids might not eat as well as this goof Herbert's, but any officer that works a second job knows, sometimes you take what you can get.
Shields seems genuinely anti-Rahm to me. Given the way the rest of our leadership jumps when Rahm snaps his fingers, that's something I can respect. Shame on the Sun times. God bless all the people in Boston.
I don't get it. The story had no punchline. It starts with Shields knowing a big Rahm contributor then veers into crazy DAn Herbert's visit to the Shields residence. SCC, I am not so sure "Fusco" is the brilliant writer you think he is.

Daniel holds the Private Security Contractor's and Private Detective licenses but Michael has neither and is NOT a registered employee (PERC holder) as required by law. heard a rumor that Shields sent Rahm a special gift for winning the mayoral election. Hmmmm......I figure you draw a line to see where it leads and honestly it starts at the top with the Mayor, followed underneath by the fundraiser family Labkons, and finally followed by the FOP President.
From the beginning this issue was not as eye opening as it appears now. There is definitely too much connection to the other side. We, as a fraternal organization, need to be a separate organization. We must represent its members first. I have a different take on this guys. If Shields was in bed with Rahm why did he work so hard to defeat the Sgt's contract offer?
I think this is more of Rahm's dirty work trying to undermine FOP.
1. Rahm's first move which failed to to take over the pension boards with the city having one more representative than the unions had.
2. His next move was to keep retirees from voting in FOP elections with a by-law change. That failed too.
3. That bullshit Sgt's contract offer failed too.
4. Then the "letter story" gets planted by Fannie from the Scum-times.
5. This story also gets put in the newspaper.
If little Mikey was in bed with tiny dancer it sure does not look like it to me. And most of the above comments seem to come from people who sound like they will be running for office.
I went out of my way to make last month's meeting when a lot of blow hearts here said they where going there to demand answers. Funny thing is not one of them asked any questions. Thus making my point.

That is no lie, that part of Goose Island is literally crawling with rats. I have seen multiple coyotes runing over there too, there is plenty of food for them.
General Iron is a disgrace! That place is leeching oil, gasoline, acid, transmission fluid, antifreeze, PVC's and an assortment of toxic chemicals directly into the Chicago River and into the surrounding ground water.
There is no doubt in my mind that nothing can ever be built upon that site.
The real travesty is that the Chicago River is literally soaking up thousands of gallons of toxic waste from that unregulated dump.
Mayor Rahm Emanuel wants to make the Chicago River the tourist magnet of Chicago but allows this all to happen?

I knew Marilyn Labkons' father Nathan Perlmutter. He and the General Iron manager Irv Hoffman were extremely good to the police. I mean these guys would go far out of their way to help a police officer. I am not a big fan of shields, I'm less a fan of our bought and paid for media. I will take a wait and see attitude with regard to our contract, I will support our current team until then. If he fails to represent us effectively, he should be removed from office.

Actually, I question the reporters intent. It appears that he is attempting to sow sedition amongst the ranks. from a personal view: There is nothing sinister about a father, who happens to be a retired lieutenant, asking his son Michael to help him with administering routine day to day duties of his FATHERS' business, (in this case a security firm). Additionally, one cannot dictate what the owner of a business will do with his money for a political campaign. The question boils down to who is trying to stir a conspiracy pot. I smell a rat.

You are correct when you comprehend what you read past the 3rd grade level. Maybe in 4th grade they teach you how to infer. A text goes out to a po he will be here in 10 minutes. Wow that po must be in the 5th grade because he was able to infer Herbert from He. This must have been an incident thought out and shared by Mike Shields to do what a person with balls would do. Fire someone that they don't want to work with without making someone look bad. In 6th grade you could infer that Shields is a pussy for waiting till the po arrived to shove Herbert. Maybe with his own admission Herbert could press battery charges. But that is not what men do. They handle the situation and move forward.
