The ISRA is once again calling upon Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel to fire Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy . This latest call for McCarthy's ouster comes after a mob of young thugs - estimated to be in the hundreds - swarmed the Magnificent Mile shopping district Saturday night and began beating dozens of innocent shoppers. This latest mob action appears to be the most serious in a string of events over the past two years involving gangs of youths randomly attacking shoppers on North Michigan Avenue.
"Just like dyeing the Chicago River green on St. Patty's Day, cracking tourists' heads on North Michigan Avenue is becoming a Windy City tradition," commented ISRA Executive Director, Richard Pearson . "The first warm night of the year, and all hell breaks loose in the city's most tony shopping district. It should be clear to everybody by now that Supt. McCarthy has lost control of the city. What are things going to be like when the weather really heats up? What has to happen before Emanuel wakes up and gives the nod to a more effective top cop?"
We imagine that someone at City Hall is looking to move up the Red Line shutdown from 19 May to anything in April.
Everyone remember Aldercreature Brendan Reilly's proposal that Michigan Avenue merchants hire off-duty cops to avert this "wilding" phenomenon? We wrote about it here:
- Reilly’s ordinance, quietly introduced at last week’s City Council meeting, would allow off-duty officers to wear their uniforms while being paid $30 an hour by local businesses to work a minimum of six-hour shifts.
We don't know about anyone else, but we're thinking $30-an-hour is kind of low now. How about $75-an-hour to start? After this weekend, and looking at Skilling's predictions for next week, that would be a bargain.

Why isn't Richard Pearson asking for Mayor Rahm Emanuel's resignation?
$30 an hour is too cheap and who is gonna insure this private security force when things go bad? The taxpayers footing the bills for an off duties side-jobs when the lawsuits start flying??
It creates a two tierd system of policing and as we all know an off duty calling in will ALWAYS get preference to an average citizen.
Why should Michigan Avenue merchants have to pay extra for armed, off-duty, police officers to guard their businesses? It's extortion.
The mayor refuses to hire enough police to adequately police and protect tourists, citizens and their property and will not provide enough police officers for required duties throughout the downtown, River North and Gold Coast areas.
In these areas, which pay among the highest taxes and City service fees, the Mayor is telling the businesses, tourists and residents that they are, effectively, on their own, because he WILL NOT protect them. If they want protection, they should pay even MORE money and 'get their own police'??? Unbelieveable.
Saturday wasn't even that warm. The worst is yet to come.

What really bothered me was hearing about it on TV, and finding NOTHING online! I think the Trib posted a story at 10:36pm, when it seemed to have started about 7pm.
As a result of yesterday's mob action, my family cancelled our Easter dinner plans downtown today. We called a restaurant in OakBrook and explained why we needed a reservation for nine people on short notice and they were nice enough to accept the reservation and they treated us wonderfully today. Shocker, there weren't any gangs roaming the streets out there and none of us felt afraid to stand in the parking lot, in the nice warm sun, talking and laughing without being assaulted.
Unfortunately, I root for this City's demise. To all of those who have made a villain of the Chicago Police Department, I hope you enjoy as the ship sinks. Of course, each one of you will ultimately move somewhere safer as it gets worse, force your superior liberal morals down everyone's throat, and ultimately sink yet another beautiful place to live.

To the woman who pays 17k in taxes I agree with you, but how do you think the businesses feel now. Taxed like crazy, fee for a license, fee for a sign, fee for a cafe and some of the highest sales tax and now they are gonna have to pay for security because regardless What they pay there is not enough cops to protect them. While reading this post I started thinking about what an armed civilian should do in one of these wilding situations. If one of these groups approaches you do you display your weapon but keep it close to your body? When do you open fire? Do you have to actually be hit by one or more people to open fire? I really don't know what I would advise a citizen to do in this circumstance. Is the proper response covered in concealed carry classes in other states?
This whole wilding thing is really urban warfare/terrorism and is a new paradigm in self defense. I am being serious when I ask what would you advise someone to do in one of these situations?
My husband and I grew up in Chicago, and every summer since we left, we've returned to do all the tourist stuff. We stay in a DT hotels, eat at our favorite restaurants, shop, go to a Cubs game, visit the museums, walk along the lakefront, etc. We won't be back this year. There are too many other places to visit where you're not running a serious risk of being set upon by mindless savages.

Growing up in Chicago, it was a thrill to ride the 'el' and go downtown for a day with a parent, to shop or see the Christmas displays in December. I took my kids too, in the 80's and 90's, and they had a great time. I would like to take the grandkids downtown on the train and know they would be just as thrilled. I suppose I could go armed, legally, but not a chance in hell would I jeopardize their safety. Too bad these totally out of control little savages have ruined this for us and others as well.

I saw the writing on the wall in summer of 2010 when this first started going down by the Lake and the media kept it quiet and I moved to the north suburbs within a few months of that. Though my taxes are way higher (a cost of having reasonable schools), I am very happy with my decision. It's amazing how much more respectful everyone is when you have to pay to go to the beach.

What I saw the other night not only was disgusting, it was shameful.
I am a successful businessman and have always believed in giving back to the community but thoe other night that same community let me down.
Here is what you won't hear the media or others say for the fear of not being politically correct.
As we walked down the sidewalk groups of black kids , that's right I said black kids, not whites, not Asians but black kids acting like thugs animals intentionally making comments to older white people and trying to get white younger people to fight and making racial slurs.
The media rarely gets it right but for a change a lot of what really happened found its way into the headlines.
Black youth is out of control and what bothers me even more is you don't hear any of our black leaders coming out and calling for peace.

Honestly, why on God's earth would anyone shop in Chicago let alone on the Mag Mile. Do people not realize that they pay not only inflated prices downtown but also an additional tax. Its called an MPEA tax charged to Downtown merchants because of their proximity to Navy Pier and McComick Place. This tax is passed on to the customer. The reasoning for the tax when it was introduced years ago was that since the merchants benefit from the tourists that go to the Pier and McCormick they should pay for that benefit to help support these behemoths. Problem is McCormick is empty 2/3rds of the year now after losing most of its trade shows and tourists stay away from the Pier as many online reviews give it a poor rating for being nothing more than souvenir shops selling overpriced baubles. Face it, downtown is in its death throws and the jackals are in a feeding frenzy.

Police were called to the 1300 block of South Wabash Avenue around 8 a.m., said Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer Jose Estrada. Driver and passenger windows were broken but nothing appeared to have been taken, he said.

Just a heads up, there are other cities in Illinois who do this.I'm a suburban cop (my city does this) and let me give you an example of how it works: When you sign up for a side job you would report to the district and get a radio and car. Then report to your job. The job would pay about forty dollars an hour,$10 of which would go directly(I'm just rounding numbers off) to the city and pay for an officers insurance and used of a city vehicle. Its a win/win for the officer and the city. The City gives the impression of more officers on the street and they aren't flipping the bill. Officer makes out by getting some extra coin in his pocket.The money you make from the job is not pensionable. You would be acting in a police capacity assigned to a private vendor. The only time you can leave your side job is due to an emergency which would have to be defined by the city.It's a good idea for the city, I just think Aldercreature Brendan O'Reilly's proposal was not well thought out. Like it or not, our financial well being, ie your pension is tied to solvency of the city. Anything that hurts Chicago, ultimately hurts us. While reading this post I started thinking about what an armed civilian should do in one of these wilding situations. If one of these groups approaches you do you display your weapon but keep it close to your body? When do you open fire? Do you have to actually be hit by one or more people to open fire? I really don't know what I would advise a citizen to do in this circumstance. Is the proper response covered in concealed carry classes in other states?
This whole wilding thing is really urban warfare/terrorism and is a new paradigm in self defense. I am being serious when I ask what would you advise someone to do in one of these situations?

I am a Chicago police sergeant who thinks we need MORE POLICE OFFICERS. I think the taxes we Chicago residents pony up should cover City services in our neighborhoods (and that includes adequate policing) and no one should have to pay MORE in order to get a normal amount of protection.
And, no; ain't lately that I've thrown a soiree at the 95th. Haven't been there since prom night, a looooonnng time ago.
But you think our city's premier business and tourist district shouldn't get the same amount and quality of police service that "the box" is getting? You think we have enough police working in this CIty? And you've decided you know who I voted for the last few decades and who I drink with? (hint, it sure as hell was never Daley or Emanuel). Sadly, I'm NOT getting the city I wanted.

I'm a PO who lives in 025. Saw a bunch of squads parked by a "church" in 25. Asked a couple of POs what was going on, said that the Sup and the Cmdr. were on their way to an event being held for parolees (job fair?). I counted 3 cars from 025 and at least one County vehicle. Yet the requests to help those who live in the community with daily issues such as CDTP (3 different incidents in the last 3 weeks on my block, all reported, mind you) fall on deaf ears. Some of us can't afford to live in 016 or 020 so we live in 025, 010, etc. Thank you to the POs that do good work in the area and a big FUCK YOU to the bosses who only give a shit when there is a photo op.

Went to mass at 1700 hrs at Holy name with wife. Got a parker and while driving away from Church and Car full of 30-40 yoa Male Female blacks pull on the side of me at Chicago and Dearborn. The mutt driver Mother fucks us and I ignored him cause wife was in car.
