Madigan Muscles Through "Reform"

  • The Illinois House approved a comprehensive pension-reform plan for the first time on Thursday after years of talks.

The House voted 62-51 Thursday to advance the measure -- SB1 -- sponsored by House Speaker Michael Madigan.

The Chicago Democrat's proposal is designed to close a $97 billion deficit that dogs the state's pension plans. Underfunding for decades has left the accounts short of what they need.

The legislation  requires employees to contribute 2 percent more of their earnings to their pensions. They would also have to delay retirement and accept less-generous annual cost-of-living increases.

The state would guarantee it would make its required contribution every year.

The unions have already threatened a lawsuit and the Senate president Cullerton D-Machine) has expressed doubts about certain aspects of the bill.

A very irritated reader posted this interesting list though:
  • FOP LODGE #7 ENDORSED HOUSE MEMBERS THAT VOTED FOR SB 1

Acevedo; Arroyo; Berrios; Burke, D.; Burke, K.; Dunkin; Feigenholtz; Harris, G.; HURLEY - We could have elected CFD member Tony Martin; Madigan, M. The Speaker; Mell; Willis

SO the bill passed by 3 votes (needed 60) and 12 of the people FOP endorsed voted for this shit!?!?
Interesting? Yes. Shocking? Not really.

Cutting middle class pensions has a destructive effect on the overall economy

One person'a pension and spending becomes another person's income.

The pensions benefits are moderate and on par with other States. The problem was IL unlike other states put off paying their contributions

These latest measures are only breeding more IL economic dysfunction.

Why would we endorse Tony Martin a firefighter. He just finished law school, has been on the pension board for 15+ years and goes to Springfield to fight against benefits that the legislature wants to take away. Next to Fran Hurley he is way to qualified for the job. So we give Madigan money and endorse his hand picked candidates and they turn around and fuck us. Shields and Gorman are playing Tah game right. It not what you get today but what you will receive when it's done. No need to explain Mikey nobody believes a word you say and shame on us for not demanding an answer at the meetings. The rest of the board is there for their $600 check. Good job guys spend it well.

Now go out there and bust your ass for the non-working ghetto assholes who, at the end of the day, make more money than you do after taxes and deductions. All for sitting home, watching Maury and making babies that they don't raise. Or for hanging on the corner with the homies smoking weed and drinking better booze than you drink. While dressed in clothing and shoes that you can't afford to buy your kids even with that part time job and the Better Half working.

And while you're out there saving them from themselves, please remember that the pension you were promised when you signed on is going to be reduced by a good amount so that the aforementioned non-contributors can continue to live their hedonistic - albeit abbreviated - lifestyle.

That's right, suckers - YOU'LL have to sacrifice a bit more to make things work. No, the pols won't even dare entertaining the thought of scaling-back the entitlements for their loyal, Democratic voting constituents.

The script has been flipped and modern day slavery is in full effect. Enjoy.

So now they have the new and improved magical pension bill they have been crying for and this is supposed to solve the budget issue, right? Now tell me what the excuse will be next year, or maybe 2-3 years later when the budget is STILL in a deficit??? What will be the solution then? If you think anything will change with these fools your are mistaken. Things will be even worse in the years to come because the revenue this bill is supposed to allocate towards the pensions will be used for everything but what it was designed for. There are no guarantees that the state will contribute their share and leave the fund untouched. This is why the pension deficit happened in the first place. These legislatures act like nothing but irresponsible teenagers with mom and dad's credit cards going on a spending spree. And We the People, are footing the bill for their spending and fiscal impropriety. Same thing happening with city workers' pensions too- the city uses that money to fund projects and programs that it cannot run otherwise, and then fails to meet their required contribution on top of misusing those funds. And now after years of mismanaging this money, they push responsibility on the workers who have contributed their portion with every paycheck. It's just like the banks when the government used taxpayer money to bail them out- they acted irresponsibly and we paid for it, yet no one was held accountable. Same principle here. The state is acted irresponsibly with our money and now we are supposed to bail them out. And again, no one is held responsible.

People in this state and city constantly bitch about the mismanagement, the corruption, the inside dealings, etc... But when it comes to election time; they act like idiots. Here is a real life example. My good friend ran for public office. His opposing candidate was a well known son of a well known politician. Everyone told him "oh we need to elect someone with more experience". Yep, the people spoke and they voted for the son of a politician who had more "experience". Then the very same people bitch and complain how the insider politicians keep raping them.

Looks like it's all coming to roost. Everyone blamed Ade and co. for being in bed with the city. Mikey screamed that he was a sellout. Our pension is on life support and needs some type of infusion quickly or it will be dead and buried very shortly. Constitution or not.....when it's gone, it's gone. Right now it looks like the deal that Ade proposed was pretty darn good compared to the alternative. It was actually fair and not that hard to stomach. Unfortunately coppers aren't too bright and couldn't see a good deal if it slapped them in the face. The good deal got voted down and now we all have to suffer and live with the alternative over which we have no say. This will be interesting. Thankfully we have our pension trustees that are doing such a bang up job of protecting our funds. Remember, Mikey was one of those trustees for a number of years along with Lazarro. Both were critical of the Ade plan but both are guilty of not doing a damn thing while being pension trustees. Maybe an investigation into those two and all the others that serve/d on the Pension Board is in order to determine guilt and charges that need to be levied against them for letting this get so out of control. Just saying!!!!

Boys and girls don't tie the noose to the ceiling joist just yet. Sit back, take a deep breath, and clear your minds.

Should any of these proposed changes actually become law, you can bet that court challeges and appeals by both sides will occur. This would tie this up for years.

As for Chicago, there is already a fix in place. It's called the ARC and it's set to go into effect in 2015. It has Rahm literally shitting in his mayoral pants because it will finally force the City to be making the appropriate pension contributions to get the funding where it belongs.

A casino is forthcoming and that is a part of solution for the City if that little shit is smart enough to realize it. There is also proposed legislation to force his hand.

I'm not saying that we should ignore the situation, just keep it all in perspective.

Here is the WORST part of the new bill..it will not stop the elected officals from not paying the pension money into the pension funds. Just like the past 40 years, when they were spending pension dollars on roads, unemployed, or whatever..they can do it all again. It's not like they are preventing what they have already done---jags.

Fran Hurley and Billy "the do what I'm told" Cunningham voted for a bill that saves the state over 1 billion immediately with none of the current savings going back into the system to help fund the systems better. Great Job Beverly! Keep electing O'Shea's people. Let us not forget all the teachers he sold out. Everyone except a few friends at the AG.

Madigan is probably the biggest culprit for the huge mess the pension funds have become.
Yet nowhere do I see him admit guilt and put some of his skin in the game. No he'd rather gloss right over his and his cohorts guilt and put all the pain on the poor workers who've done nothing wrong.

Question is...What does this mean for us? We are seperate from this bill, right?

5/03/2013 12:42:00 PM

Yes we are seperate. Don't think for a minute that Rahm won't use the state as a starting point when he fucks with our pensions though. He told the firemen that they need to learn how to bleed.
This slimy, arrogant, egotistical, evil prick will try and fuck with our pensions even more than Madigan is proposing for state workers.

What a sad comment on the Judicial System. They can't find a few judges to be impartial to a question of law. The politicians in Springfield have to bribe all of them by not diminishing their pension. Madigan already is predicting that his Bill will pass judicial review. This is a great civics lesson in Illinois politics. Glad I moved out.
