Show Us The Money!

The beancounters at the Sun Times finally realized that all these alleged "numbers" coming from McCompStat cost money:
  • Combating hot spots of violence, the Chicago Police Department has already burned through two-thirds of its 2013 overtime budget in the first three months of the year — raising questions about how much will be left to handle the traditional summer crime wave.

Some of the $21 million overtime bill went to officers working in “Operation Impact.” In February, 200 officers a day started working overtime in the 20 most violent zones of the city as part of the program.

The department doubled Operation Impact to 400 officers a day on March 1. But the $21 million overtime bill doesn’t include those extra officers, who began receiving their checks in April.

Where will the money for the rest of the year come from? Reorganization! At least according to our comment sections:
  • Ok, so I get to work today (Homan square) and I am talking with our commander. He said the sun times and news reports about the overtime money running out already put rahm in a tizzy. Him and gmac talked over the past two days and said VRI money will be done somewhere in the middle of August but they need to continue the saturation of areas with visible patrols. So, the idea is for..... Wait for it... A new citywide unit. Allegedly, and it's only preliminary but it will be a mirror of VRI. A car covering a two block area and can't leave. Same concept and rules of VRI except it will be an everyday unit. Gmac assigned two whTs and a Lt to explore the options/locations/ manpower requirements etc to get a unit up and running by the 10th period. Activity will not be a requirement. Sounds like the are looking for a bunch of scarecrows for visibility. There will be both days and night teams based on seniority. Obviously none of it is set in stone, it's just preliminary ideas from the phone meeting with the exempts yesterday
Truth or rumor? No one knows for sure.

But we don't need to hire more cops!!

So why did Rahm and Gary apply for a federal grant to hire more cops?

City Applied for Grant Money to Hire More Cops

Mayor Rahm Emanuel, police Supt. Garry McCarthy have said publicly that additional hires not needed

"This is acknowledging that they actually lied to the public and they lied to us," Fraternal Order of Police President Mike Shields said Friday. "The Fraternal Order of Police has stood by the 13,500 [staffing number]. You've seen other groups come out saying that the correct amount is 13,500. ... Now, you see in documents filed for federal grant assistance for more police they're asking for seventeen hundred more, which actually brings them up to greater than 13,500."

Twenty minutes goes by. Twenty-five minutes goes by.. Large crowds of Blackhawk fans then start wandering into the street tapping on windows of the passer-by's asking for rides.

Way to show off the city during a playoff mayor! World-Class hahaha.

Somehow, someway Rahm got bamboozled! In his haste to appear as if he knew what he was doing, McCarthy showed himself to lack an original idea. The disbanding of Special Focused City-Wide Units was an absolute mistake, especially since those Units made arrests and in so doing altered the behavior of the "Beast". Now we have a police presence that validates the Kansas City Study that was the basis of Community Policing. That Study stated that increased police presence does not deter crime. The current tactic of providing visible police presence cannot continue and only delays what will happen when police leave.Nobody's behavior is modified by this tactic, except perhaps for police wifes who will be filing for divorce! The expense and stress on officers will take a toll. The money is great, but the lack of a personal life and family cannot continue for the whole year. Unless Rahm really is close to Obama, this circus is going to run out of money soon, and someone is going have to face the fact that there is no new stategy here. Next do they plan to deploy officers to Englewood and set up an occupation? Boys, if they do that, don't bring home any War Brides! Baby G.

Garry and Rahm should be put in jail for stealing police resources from taxpayers and giving everything to the ghetto. Has it ever occurred to them taxpayers are leaving Chicago partially because a lack of police protection?? Who wants to raise a family knowing the police never patrol your neighborhood and are at least 10 minutes away??

Ghetto rif raff are simply going into these quiet areas to steal and destroy whatever they can because their own neighhborhoods are war zone areas that are saturated with ploice paid for by taxpayers.

If only there were a unit that was MOBILE and could STRIKE criminals in the most violent areas of the city in FORCE. We could even offer them additional training for working odd hours in the most violent parts of the city while giving up their contractual rights. Hell, we'll fuck them after we're done with them anyway and send them to the worst districts.

Hmmm. If only such a thing were possible. We could even pull recent combat veterans and officers with specialized skill sets to train them. We can ensure that supervision is high by making small teams run by sergeants. Hell, we could even work with the State's Attorney office and the feds to coordinate plans of action against the most violent offenders. Golly, why not have it run by a Marine Intelligence Officer with multiple combat tours under his belt? That experience working insurgencies might play well with gang crime in the city. I'll bet that some success might come from that.

Nahhhh. Fuck it. Just spend tax money like drunken sailors after shuffling desk dollies around while lying to the public about numbers instead.

Just tell the peasants that it's too hot near the cool water at the beach. Everything will work out just fine. Statistic count. Not reality. Go Compstat!!! I'm thirsty. Hand me some Kool Aid.

You're only halfway there. They apply for the funding knowing they are going to have many, many more retirements. The 'new' (Federally funded) bodies will be absorbed into the totals. They will not be EXTRA bodies, as soon as the same number of people retire.
In other words, the Fed pays for 100 'new' bodies and the City pays for 300. 600 retire this year and we end up with a net loss of 200. Even if Rahm hires exactly as many people as the retirement numbers, the Federally funded officers will be included in the totals. Rahm will announce he's hired x number of new police. He will also announce we received Fed money to hire an additional (let's say) 100. What he won't tell you is the Federally-funded bunch is INCLUDED in his number of hires. Kind of like counting people who are detailed out of your unit twice - once in your unit and once in the unit of detail. Voila! More cops!

Now JJR scam comes to light. He knew he was fittin to get bamboozeled by the Feds for stealing almost a million dollars and decided to play mentally ill-while he still collected a salary and Chgo Ald wife continued to live 1,000 miles from her job and collect Chicago taxpayer's money. His daddy-the play rev jessie-must have told his "LEGITIMATE" child that the race card bullshit wasn't gonna work this time. Stay tuned!

The O/T money is nice for a while. But soon you will realize that all you are doing is going back and forth to work and it gets old. No time for family. No time for friends. Making lot's of money but can't do anything but work. What's the point if you can't enjoy life? You will never get back the time that you give up so choose wisely.

Police: DUI charge for woman celebrating end of earlier DUI suspension

11:26 AM CDT, May 4, 2013

A 58-year-old Brookfield woman charged by Riverside police Friday for driving under the influence said she had been out celebrating the imminent return of her driver’s license from an earlier drunk driving conviction.

According to a news release from the Riverside Police Department, Erin James, 58, was charged after she was stopped for speeding at 2:10 a.m. Friday in the 3400 block of South Harlem Avenue. The release said that when she later underwent a breath test at the department, her blood alcohol level was 0.155 percent; the legal limit is 0.08.

In the release, police said that James’ driver’s license had been suspended in 2012 after a DUI arrest in North Riverside and that she had told a Riverside officer she had been out celebrating at a Forest Park bar the fact that she would be getting her license back from the 2012 arrest.

Riverside Police Chief Tom Weitzel said in the release that James was supposed to be driving a vehicle that included a breath alcohol ignition interlock device (BAIID) and was purposely driving a vehicle lacking that device.

“The fact that she was driving a vehicle not equipped with a BAIID shows that she had every intent of drinking and getting behind the wheel,” Weitzel said in the release.

James is scheduled to appear in Central Bond Court today.

About 138 women who were denied jobs with the Chicago Fire Department following a test seven years ago will have a chance to reapply to be a firefighter on Monday after reaching an agreement with the city in a federal class-action lawsuit.

WOW! Now women. Male whites need not apply.

I call BS. You are gonna tell me that in the middle of the summer they are gonna pull the plug on some OT program and let the savages run the city. I don't think so. If we are on pace to average the same homicides as we did in 2011, then the summer will be hot and wild.

I think it is some troll just starting some BS.

5/04/2013 01:23:00 AM

Like all details, they end. This one is scheduled to end by Aug. The department hopes by that time the new unit will be up and running and the O.T. hemorrhaging will stop. Even Tiny Dancer can't justify spending 2/3 of the O.T. budget only 5 months into the year.

First of all, be careful out there. Retired guy for about a year and enjoy it. All of your hours at work, making the money is great but will haunt you at the age of 50. Your health and family are more important. Remember the average age of coppers passing on after retirement. It is tragic. Enjoy at a young age not in a coma at an older age. After hitting your higher tax bracket with your OT check to see if it is worth it. I think not.

Who the F wouyld want to work a unit like that on a daily basis?

5/04/2013 05:41:00 AM

In the military, you would be asking who would work in the Airborne, Rangers or SF. Same pay as a cook. Young, aggressive and don't give a shit. Just want to be in the shit. Pride in professionalism. Knowing you did all you could. Only bad part is that the city will fuck them instead of honor them.

Does that answer your question?

5/04/2013 09:17:00 AM

I still cringe at not getting those jump wings when I was younger...just to say you're airborne boy. I'd take 5 jump chump over none but like you said there is pride there.

So tell me this.. What white shirt boss, alderman or even the tiny dancer are going to speak up and stop a program that's supposedly working?? And tell me this.. What coppers are going to jump at the chance to be a part of a city wide unit that drives around in a box all day in the ghetto?? I want to see 530 coppers ( because that's what it would take to staff it plus seargents ) bid for this.. So that would leave the ppo's to do it. Potential for someone getting hurt? You bet . So lets see who cracks and tries to bring down a program that's working. I think not..scare tactic because they are afraid of getting short staffed in the hot violent summer months.

There are about 400 recruits in the academy. This will be close to enough to replace the 500 that retired next year. But once they get their stars and guns they may be thrown in the boxes on foot and that would lighten the load for needing VRI. As least as far as the bean counters and the brass are concerned.

WTF working VRI one day a week isnt any big deal When I was working midnights I had to go to court usually 3 days a week and had to waste the time between being off at 530 until court started at 9 I would end up with 3 hrs pay and actually spend the same time at a day of VRI and would do this 3 times a week
As far as higher tax bracket, seldom happens and old urban legand by unifirms pos In 2013 25% bracket for a married couple goes up to #146,400.00 before you go to the 28% bracket so you have to make $50,000 in OT and that ain't happening so move on
Also if you want to save on income tax , ask FOP to negotiate in the new contract a lower wage and no overtime, that way you can save on taxes by being in a lower tax bracket Now do you see how stupid the higher tax bracket argument is

To put it bluntly, nobody gives a shit anymore. The 'troops' have no self-respect and don't care how they look and the so-called bosses are too terrified of civil rights beefs to step up and enforce uniform requirements.
There's a detective who loves to tell supervisors GOD gives him the right to wear his dirty, matted rasta locks.
Uniform requirements = a total joke.

I thought these pod cameras were suppose to deter crime and bad behavior? Why doesn't the media do a story - investigation on how much money was/is being spent on these cameras and if the money would of been better spent on hiring more police officers.

5/04/2013 12:16:00 PM

The pods work as well as the "Gun Free Zone" signs.

It's all about the contracts and who gets them.

Nothing new in Chicago.
