Retirees at St. Jude's
As in years past, we have this from a retiree:
- In addition to the various districts and units within the department, a special contingent of Chicago Police Retirees will be represented here as well.
All retirees are encouraged to attend and march in this time honored tradition to, "Honor Our Fallen."
Retirees will assemble on Museum Campus Drive and Solidarity Drive in preparation for the March. Extended family members and friends are welcome to view the March from the west side of Museum Drive, across from the Park. Since retirees are scheduled to march at the beginning of the parade in the first seven positions between the Gold Star Family Members and Chicago Police Board delegations, it is advised to arrive by 0700 hrs. The March will proceed south on Museum Campus Drive to Waldron Drive and step off promptly at 0800 hours.
Immediately at the conclusion of the March, there will be a brief 15 minute interfaith service presented by the Chicago Police Department Chaplain’s Unit. Department members and guests are invited to attend this service.
Complimentary parking for police personnel and families attending the St. Jude Memorial March will be available in the Waldron Deck Parking Garage, the South lot of Soldier Field, or the North Garage of Soldier Field. All traffic will exit at 18th St. or McFetridge Drive for parking.
A traffic detail will be assigned to direct you to the parking.
We ask all our fellow retirees to again attend one of the oldest and proudest traditions of our department to continue to send the message to our Gold Star Family members of our commitment to them to, 'Never Forget' and to honor the memories of their loved ones.
See you all on Sunday.

This is a great event. I am glad they are giving complimentary parking for it.
Too bad they are charging for parking for the CPD Memorial Run to Remember.
They were selling "prepaid" parking passes at the Academy where runners picked up their packets on Thursday and Friday.
Nothing like showing the police how much you care by charging them parking on a lot that is not being used anyways.
thanks soldier field
Honor our fallen.
Because of low turnout, they're gonna have retired guys march now?
what is the dress code for retirees?? does anyone care what we wear if we march in the parade?? I don't want to be the only one in pajamas.....
Illinois State Police will be honoring two Troopers killed while on duty in the past year. Their families will be in attendance.
THANKS for the post SCC
Let's hope for a great turn out to 'Honor Our Fallen' a testimony to that thin blue line in law enforcement.
Ah yes.... the entitlement police. Wheres my discount bc youre somebody
Return St Jude to Michigan Avenue!!! Not showing any respect to the fallen hidden behind Soldier Field.
First time I'll be at this event. All recruits at the Academy are required to attend, but not getting OT for said-appearance. It's good to show out support though for what we are getting into. :-)
It's always the dollar!

Good that all you go Dont worry about OT, you will have plenty of time to get OT and to bitch about not getting it. That will come later, dont be a crybaby already
I agree. The St. Jude march BELONGS on Michigan Avenue. It almost seems like we are being hidden in the back.
Screw the Michigan Avenue retailers if they were the cause of us getting moved in the first place.... Don't want a bunch of cops tieing up traffic and slowing sales. Boo Hoo!
In any event, I will be there.

The Michigan Avenue retailers aren't open at 0800 on Sunday mornings. They'd probably be thrilled to find a few thousand leftover parade attendees (potential customers)at their doorstep at 1000hrs.
If you want to point a finger, think about Richie Daley, the guy who has such great love and respect for the police.
"First time I'll be at this event. All recruits at the Academy are required to attend, but not getting OT for said-appearance"
Make sure you tell the permanently disabled Officers that are Wheelchair bound your tale of woe about no OT @ St.Judes.
Never ceases to Amaze.
There should be a special uniform for retirees
Heh...
Maybe Rahm will pull a Shortshanks and have the Park District guys put down fresh manure overnight before the march.
Classy...
Our CPD Family Members in 001 and 018 told us there were some >ahem< discreet inquiries but it seems the Park District guys were all in on playing dumb...
Whatever...
Prayers for the fallen...
Remember the survivors.
I was out there with the retirees this morning....there were about 70 people in the group. A nice turnout considering it was sort of put together at the last minute. I does this retired guy's heart good to see the sea of blue and the respect shown to the fallen and their families.
For you young guys out there....this is what it's about....brotherhood and respect for those whom have gone before.
Thanks for your help SCC....a brother if there ever was one!
Never forget!
To all who attended:
A class act, as usual. You made the city proud. Thank you, on behalf of those who gave all, and those who gave much. There is nothing like the sound of the pipes calling over the grassy hills, as we march tall and proud past a fitting memorial for our own.
God Bless!

Yeah, right, because a retiree has never marched in this parade before.
We get kind of used to it, after thirty years. We like to see our still-active friends. We believe in honoring our friends and co-workers who died in the line of duty.
Got nothing to do with numbers or turnout. Got everything to do with integrity.

I agree. Another member of the me me me generation chimes in. Probably the same jag off that bitched about the two dollar parking at the run to remember. You know him, he'll spend 4.00 on a fucking Stella, but can't put in 2 bucks to honor the fallen.
The department I retired from is gone.
God bless our fallen.

No one told us to march. Or jump in for DC last year. We do it out of respect.
26 yrs and gone.
ON THIS TOPIC...
When our members retire from the Chicago Police Department, they only give up their active legal status. They do not surrender their values, pride or allegiance.
They will forever remain Chicago Police Officers. They earned that right.
A quick count of retiree brothers and sisters revealed app. seventy-three(73)marching in attendance.
Considering that this is the first year that a formal 'notification' was sent out(Thanks again SCC) that our retired members have their own recognized delegation up front in the parade, their turnout was even more commendable.
A great big THANK YOU to ALL who were able attend-- active and retired along with the outside agencies. Once again you did us proud in one of the oldest and proudest traditions of our department.
Thanks also to our police family who worked the streets Sunday to keep our neighborhoods safe.
For those unable to attend in person, please continue to keep our Police and Gold Star Family members in your thoughts and prayers.
God Bless the Chicago Police Department, all our fellow 'First Responders and God Bless America!
Thank You...One and All.

Wear the regulation uniform with your Retired Star. You deserve it Sir.
Thanks for remembering Our Fallen.
To the kid in the academy bitching about the OT. Show some respect or get the fuck out. I'm sure you will be the one screaming on radio so loud no one will understand you when things get a little tough

You sir are one kind person. Saying the above words brought tears to my eyes. I been retired recently after many years on the job. I really miss the job so very much there are times I wished I would just die. But, I hope it gets better.
When you retire and go to turn in your stuff, civilians throw you a new retired star and ID and its over.
I really miss all the fine men and women otj and all the great times.
Thank you again for those words of kindness, he made my day to read them. May God bless all you great people of the CPD. You are all GEMS.

The hardest part of being retired, early on, for me was seeing something on the street and the natural instinct is to go jump in or to say something to asshole in police voice. It is hard going back to civilian status but it does happen gradually, I miss burning the City gas and backing up my partners. And the checks, down to only one a month!
But the values, the everlasting loyalty to those who Serve and Protect, that will always be there.
Stay safe you magnificant bastards!
