- Just so everyone is made aware. The only people subjected to firearms
registration is active Chicago Police Officers. State law has eliminated
this for everyone including retired CPD. The only reason that firearms
registration is still in existence is because by General Orders, active
CPD are required to have their duty firearms registered. Active CPD are
also the only ones still required to register their non duty weapons as
well. State law has exempted everyone else from this. Also because of
the CC law, the CFP (Chicago Firearms Permit) is no longer in effect so
anything associated with it, fingerprints, classes, etc are no longer
required. You can now legally have an unregistered firearm in your house
in Chicago without having or needing a CFP. The only thing that would
be required is a valid FOID card. That's it.
You don't have to believe me. Feel free to contact the Chicago Police Gun Registration Section at 312-745-5164 to verify.
So now we have to get the General Order rescinded so we can enjoy the freedom legally that everyone else has. And people look at me funny when I describe us as second class citizens. This is a great example of why we are...
If this is true and the Gun Desk has been legislated out of relevancy, shouldn't a sizable percentage of the folks there be out patrolling in the districts where we're still a bit short-handed? All hands on deck and that sort of thing. Or was that just more BS for the cameras Rahm?

SCC has it right!! Went down to HQ last week Wednesday to register firearms and was told "you can keep the form, we don't accept them any more from retired P.O.'s". It's a beautiful thing being retired along with our 2nd Amendment RIGHT!!! Ladies and Gents stay safe out there in the good Old USA!!!
This is true. I am a suburban officer that lives in the city. I recently attempted to register my firearm , but headquarters mailed all of my information back stating that registration was not necessary.

This is absolutely true. The CFP is dead. They are no longer accepting applications for an illegal permit. You are now good to go for concealed carry with just a FOID card until such time as the State Police comes up with the qualification course, which they have 180 days to do. They will not make that deadline.

WTF has the union got to do with this? Last time I checked the only things the unions can enforce are contractual issues. Think you need to read your contract dickhead.
I suspect if it was challenged it is also preempted for active cops.
Well the CPD doesn't have military grooming standards. Hair must be worn and or shaped to not though the collar and be over the ears. The United States Marine Corps hair standards are all hair to be zero to 3 inches on top, evenly graduated. The CPD does not require hair to be any length.

Having that State Certification does not mean he is a sworn officer anywhere. It only means he has had the requisite training and is therefore authorized to be hired by a police agency within the State of Illinois.
If he works for some governmental agency or a private business and is not now employed as a police officer, has not taken an oath of office (sworn) then he is not a police officer and if, alternately, he is not a retired police officer who retired in good standing with at least 10 or 15 years of service and has in his possession a valid IROCC card then he is not legally entitled to carry a weapon in public or anywhere outside of his basement at home.
Carrying the water for Bernie Hansen does not qualify him to do anything other than suck a fat old man's balls.
Now arrest that man.
Great thing to worry about-- when you are 70 and there is no pension you will be eating cat food.
Does this mean I can expect a check for $115.00 from tiny dancer to reimburse me for that now fucking useless CFP + 1 registration?

Everybody needs to understand that this police department has been taken over by Intellectual Idiots. Yes they have law degrees and Master's Degree but they couldn't catch a crook in cook county jail. The current bosses were never the police. They couldn't clear a corner to save their lives. Which brings me to my next point, the hiring process. The police academy is a joke. Fat out of shape, three year wonders teaching at the academy. We have college kids that lack common sense. We have Marines that were administrative clerks or Army logistics mail clerks and they actually think there entitled to this job. Very few cops out there know how to deal with the streets. Very few good detectives left. The bottom line is the leadership lacks competent leaders. The Sgts suck cause there good test takers. What a fucking joke. The troops are spineless because they have this sense of entitlement. Just look at their uniforms and the way they carry themselves. I have never seen such a worse breed of Chicago Police Officers. We look terrible in our uniforms, our fitness level is horrendous even coming out of the academy. Once they took the wall away from the testing process this dept started hiring fat asses. We did away with our old beautiful star for the Disney World Star. Thanks Hillard for nothing. It's funny how the Exempts kept there old stars. Double Standards. I'm sick of the Supt., sick of the exempts, sick of how lazy and fat we look, and sick of baseball caps with the stupid black vest and cargo pants. Masters and Hamilton really fucked up our great uniform. Enough ranting. One more year left. I am embarrassed to call myself a Chicago Police Officer. We suck as a Dept. Nothing will save us. There are very few police officers on the Chicago Police Department. I'm just happy I worked with Real Policeman and can retire knowing I was the Real Police and not a joke like most of you are. Well the CPD doesn't have military grooming standards. Hair must be worn and or shaped to not though the collar and be over the ears. The United States Marine Corps hair standards are all hair to be zero to 3 inches on top, evenly graduated. The CPD does not require hair to be any length.

Whomever made the comment about this department having "grooming standards," should take a look around this department. We actually DO have a general order that requires officers to be groomed; however, it is not enforced at all in my opinion. Officers basically look like shit. Now it's the "trendy" thing to have a bump card so everyone can walk around looking like a mountain man. Braids, dreds, ponytails, males wearing earrings, women not having their hair pulled up neatly......officers in this department look like garbage in uniform and it's a complete violation of department orders. Not to mention the P.O.'s who come on the job Tattoo free only to get their arms and neck covered in tatts looking like bikers and gangbangers in uniform. If you go to any other big city, even most suburbs, officers for the most part look neat and professional. On CPD it's a different story however. It's really disappointing that it's not addressed by the department more.

I strongly recommend that everyone read the actual newly-passed law for yourself. Section 90, pre-emption, states that the regulation of handguns and ammunition for handgun is now an exclusive power of the State. IT DOES NOT EXEMPT LONG GUNS. Chicago is still legally allowed to require a CFP and registration for any rifle, shotgun, if they so choose. For some of the other commenters to this post, the ISP website also states that you may NOT carry with nothing more than a FOID card; you must wait for the carry permit. It also does not allow you to own anything the state already prevents (such as SBR's, SBS's, silencers, machine guns, etc.), nor does it remove existing assault weapon bans, it simply overrides current home rules on handguns only, and future laws on long guns.

The CCW law (HB183) does undo all local control over handguns, handguns accessories, etc. But as far as I know, long guns aren't covered, so Chicago can still demand the same registration for rifles and shotguns.

The reason CPD and other agencies won't arrest for UUW now is that the State is behind in compliance. Until they do comply, you CAN carry with an FOID. No trooper or cop would risk their career on the lawsuit for making that arrest. Until they come up with the training requirements and the permit, you're good to go with an FOID.

I left a year early last year for many of the same reasons. I gave up that last 2.5% because I no longer wanted to come to work for an organization I could not respect. I do not regret it. I lost the 2.5% but I have been getting the pension these past eleven months. First COLA coming soon, next COLA Jan 1 2014. Peace and quiet, no more gnashing of teeth. Not bad, good decision.

They could but they are no longer accepting registration applications for long guns either. The whole point of registrations was to keep people from having handguns in the city. When it started, those that had them were required to register them in order to keep them and after a certain period, no more handgun applications were able to be submitted. Hence the handgun ban. Only law enforcement and armed security were able to register handguns after that point. There was not a lot of concern over long guns as they are not readily concealable so they continued to accept new registrations for them. But since they have lost the handgun registration, they could care less about long guns other than the evil black rifles...

1. There first was no CC in Illinois. If you were caught you got a UUW charge.
2. Then came the Chicago Firearms Registration and a General Order requiring everyone and P.O's to register.

So yes, the General Order should be rescinded but because there has been no move on rescinding it, we are stuck and subjected to something that the Illinois legislature no longer agrees with. So yes, that's why are being treated like second class citizens subjected to something that everyone else has been completely freed of.

All this bitching about the uniform is interesting, but here's the deal, Marine: The CPD uniform is our COMBAT uniform. Unlike the military, we go out onto the streets, fighting an insurgent war every day, for twenty years or more. How many of the men & women fighting in Afghanistan give much of a damn about their gig line, except for the REMFs?
The CPD uniform isn't a dress uniform. We have one of those and the field uniform ain't it.
They might want the field uniform to be a dress uniform, but that's simply not practical.

Your first mistake was trying to explain something to a brain dead jarhead.
