Aldercreature Pushes for Retro

  • A Northwest Side alderman whose ward is home to scores of Chicago Police officers urged Mayor Rahm Emanuel on Wednesday not to use a paperwork mistake made by the police union president to deny rank-and-file police officers their automatic right to a retroactive pay raise in 2012.

Ald. Mary O’Connor (41st) said she introduced the resolution at a City Council meeting in response to concerns voiced by police officers who have called her office and stopped her on the street.

“People feel there’s a rift between the mayor and the FOP president and they’re caught in the crossfire,” O’Connor said Wednesday.

“The perception out there is that they are going to lose income because of a deadline that was missed. That should not be the case. It’s a clerical error made by their representative, but it impacts 10,000 police officers. It has an impact on their livelihood and their families. That would not be fair to the police.”
Now if we could only get 25 more aldercreatures to vote for this, we might get somewhere.

One alderman out of 50? Doesn't any of the other ones believe in fair play? In honor and integrity?

What about Ed Burke? No allegiance to "fellow" police officers? Willie Cochran?

Sad.

If it is explained as a clerical error, wouldn't people be rushing to correct it? Why all the drama?

Funny how this doesn't get played on the news as much as the "beating of the bartender" or the "fireman dancing at a party".

With no voice of fair play or sense of integrity to correct an issue, sounds like we don't need 50 aldermen to make decisions. Cut them back to 25 - or even 20 - and you'll have more than enough money to pay police and even hire a couple more. Issue solved.

Doesn't anyone in Chicago have common sense anymore? Maybe the bigger question would be - Did they ever?

Next case.

This entire "resolution" was politically orchestrated by Rahm. He is throwing O'Connor a carrot. Rahm is mandated by law to negotiate in good faith and could not hold back our pay. He KNOWS this. The ironworkers were in the same situation and Rahm had to pay them (the huge campaign contributions didn't hurt, either). He knows he could not do this for the ironworkers and not for us. Wake up. Rahm is having problems with numbers at the polls. He can't afford to piss off any more unions, who get out the vote for him.

Having retired as a sgt. over 10 years ago I do not have a horse in this race, but, although shields is the president and is held accountable for "the letter", what about the other officers/leaders (sic) of fop (dougherty, di maria, aguilar, etc.) who have been on the fop gravy train for years, and who should have some blame in this oversight. What about donahue, is he not paid by fop as a lobbyist. How about a little mentoring, mike?
When I go to the fop website, I see the 3 past presidents of fop, all who have sold us down the river, one way or another. example, gee, the city ONLY wants you to pay $2.00 a check for health insurance.
Maybe If the elected officers of fop maintained their grade pay, D1, D2, they would have a better feel for what the membership needs are.
How many past president have returned to the job when their terms ended? Going back to the COP days, George head is the only one I can think of.

@2:34 PM. If Tom Leamer got called to the superintendent's office, it is a sign of everything that is wrong in this department. We are at a point where we have ran out of people to promote and are now throwing shit against the wall to see what will stick. Ask anybody who has worked for this micromanager how demoralizing it is. The fact it took this number crunching geek so long to move up shows you how he is viewed by his fellow bosses. He is the perfect boss to turn loose on us by a department that hates us. To bad because his father was a good man.

I totally agree with above post, 0456am.
While i usually agree with you SCC, you dropped the ball on this one. Bashing an alderman who's trying to help us get our retro absolutely serves no purpose except to hurt our chances.
I agree that there are many hater "aldercreatures" taking up space in city counsel. But to bash the few who are actually trying to help us is a mistake.
Now many may say that the retro is "small potatoes" compared to the other issues on the table. I agree and we shouldn't let the retro be a bargaining chip. But if these aldermen want to try and get us our retro irregardless of negotiated terms of a new contract, so be it! And who couldn't use a few extra grand in this economy??
So please SCC, retract or at least re-title the post to throw the proverbial "olive branch" for your readers.

They are all playing games and ALL OF THEM DESERVE TO BE KICKED OUT COME ELECTION TIME. It's not just one guy, it's all of them.

A few grand? You're dreaming. The sergeants got 2% and an agreement that if the FOP or CFD Lt's got more, they'd get the difference. Therefore, it's money in the bank that no one will see anything over 2%. And 2% isn't a couple grand.

It's a non-binding resolution, folks. A "feel good" move to win a few votes. Means nothing. And smells like something tiny dancer cooked up with O'Conner to get them both re-elected.

Exactly - and as someone else noted, can you point out a single instance of the aldercreature voting against anything Rahm wanted? We can't seem to find a single instance.

Sorry, have to disagree with you on this one. From July 2012 to lets say June 2014 (estimate for contract settlement) is over 4000 work hours. At 2% per year, someone with 10 years on the job is easily looking at 2 grand out the door. More if you've worked special and been checking the money box in court. And no, I'm not counting on retro.

O'Connor knows that she is in big trouble in the 41st Ward. If you think she has any use for the Police, you are sadly mistaken. She is a left wing liberal that was only elected because of a high vote total from Edgebrook nd the Circle. Tons of money was given to her from Rahm and through Pat O'Connor, so it wouldn't look like Rahm was supportating her. Their s already 7-8 people lining up to run against her. She will be kept under 50% , therefore a runoff. We need a good candidate, possibly a PO to run against her.

Said it here before. If the city gave all other union's retro, an arbitrator is not going to deny it for just one union. Rahm must have sanctioned this. It is Washington style politics and spin. Rahm sets it up to make both him and the other aldermen look like they are negotiating in good faith even beyond what is required of them, hoping to garner not only votes but the favor of the arbitrator down the line.
This mayor has proven again and again he cannot be trusted. He has millions of dollars for special projects, millions in surplus in the TIF's yet he cannot find any money to increase the cities contribution into its pension funds. In fact he is lobbying hard to re-negotiate the increase mandated in Springfield crying broke and telling Chicagoans they will see property tax increases of 50%.
If Rahm wanted to he could easily work out a solution for funding the pensions. Whether it be TIF monies, casino revenue, privatization of Midway, etc,
If these aldermen really respected their emergency responders they would work together to ensure we get the pensions we earned by starting to fund our pensions accordingly. We pay more into our pensions then teachers or politicians. And we are not eligible for Social Security.
Don't buy what their selling

If we were some Acorn Community Organization with our hand in the city till believe me they would be bending over to kiss our asses to make this error go away. Why? Because the Acorn or any Community ( or whatever you want to call them these days ) gets votes and in always behind Rahm at photo ops.

Cops on the other hand do not vote and if they did would not vote for Rahm and would be holding up two fingers behind his head at photo ops.

To all you Shields supporters out there that are blaming everyone for Mikes decision not to send the letter, yes a conscious decision not to send the letter.
1. Mark Donahue the past president had 3 conversations concerning the letter with Mikey. His fourth conversation was with his secretary, who Mikey has since fired because she nagged the fuck out him to send the letter she prepared after speaking with Donahue.
2. Rich Aguilar had a conversation with Mikey and Mikey told him the letter was taken care of.
3. Mikey told the membership at a general meeting 1 week before the letter was due that it was taken care of and its in the minutes of the meeting.
Fuck all the loyal Shields supporters who voted with him and the supporters who say the entire FOP board is responsible. Mikey had one task to accomplish in his 3 year term and that was to get the letter in on time, if he had done that nobody would have known that he wasn't doing his job. He lied about knowing even though he told the membership it was taken care of what more proof do you need to concur that he failed to send the letter and lied to the membership to cover it up.

It's all about self preservation rather than the representation of its officers. Scumbags!

Get your head out of your ass and start attending meetings, Shields in the February meeting stated to the membership that he had the letter of intent completed and intended on sending it in. However for reasons unknown he failed to do so even after being told numerous times.

Sarge stay retired you have no clue as to what is going on. Let' look at the Sergeants association for example, just like the State of Illinois our leader in prison for stealing how much of our money? This is a "gift" we really don't need. Send it back. The teachers stood together against Rahm, and that is how they kicked his ass.

This post only applies to this who live in the above school boundaries, so don't loose it and think I'm referring to all public schools, so.......

You said it best. End of story. Shields is a liar!!!! Mike Shields you need to resign!!! You're making Captains pay and you cost 10,000 police officers thousands of dollars. You and you're idiot brother have no decency or respect. Resign!! FOP membership wake up. The above post says it best. Mike Shields is a liar. He either did it on purpose or he's an idiot. Why are we putting up with this BS. How can one snot nose, never been the police, punk ass do whatever he wants to us? Bottom line..... my family is out 3 to 4 thousand dollars because of Shields being an idiot. Again Shields has a take home car, an expense account, and makes Captain's pay at our dime.

I can honestly say that Cline was the worst thing to happen to this job. He promoted all FOP's, friends of Phil and they are and were horrible. His legacy will be the advancement of friends who had no business in positions of leadership since they were and never will be leaders. He was the final nail in the coffin which is now the CPD.

100 percent correct. Cline was the downfall of this Department. He was a crooked IP. He abuse the merit system and put people in positions of authority of who they knew not what they know. Incompetence and greed is what happened. Does any one person really deserve to be promoted meritoriously 3 times in a row. Pure corruption and greed.

And yet...that person is 95% correct.

Ya'all do use your extra pay for shit like that. My wife used to be a Branch Manager at InBank on Division at Wolcott....Her off duty CPD security had a cell for his wife and a cell for his GF. We all know it happens.

And your wife had no business blabbing that information to you and you have no business blabbing it to us.

The above posts are accurate and correct. Mike Shield's needs to go. If we don't get rid of him we are our own worst enemy.

Retired Lt here. Why would you Blue Shirts let a nobody like Shields make fools out of you. The Real Police that I came on the job with would have forced this shit talking liar off of FOP and the job. What the hell happened to the Real Police? Are you that dumb? I'm glad I retired. You're letting a Giligan looking Shields make you look like idiots. "Oh I forgot to send the letter." Yeah right. Wake up CPD.

Mike Shields has many people working alongside him and not one mentioned or told him to send the letter. Come on.....sounds like Shields got amnesia with a promise for a spot when he loses his election.

Solution:
1. Get rid of all FOP Officers / Board, Vote them out

2. New Officers / Board: No perks and Patrolman pay

Im sure the new board or president will change the by-laws to reflect patrolman pay for FOP pres and board...bc all of us Cops stick together, right?

Aguilar said at a meeting he told Mike to send the letter. He stood up there and threw Shields under the bus. Others said they did also. None of them could be bothered with writing the letter and putting it in front of Shields to sign, however. Aguilar can only say, "I told him, he didn't do it, don't blame me..."

That's what you get for firing all the office people who actually know how to run things. Mark Donahue's secretary, Mary Pat, knew everything. Why fire her? She can teach new people lots of valuable stuff; but Mike fired her first day.

That was a bad move and firing Pleines was a bad move also. He went in there firing people and making enemies and then wonders why everything blew up in his face down the line.
