Englewood Overrun by Rats
This article was entertaining on many levels. Some highlights:
- The rats in the 7000 block of South Parnell Avenue have become a problem, Ruthie Shivers said. A big problem.
Shivers, 83, said she no longer barbecues or lets her small dog, Bella, play in her backyard.
"I'm afraid if I let her in the backyard she will be attacked by those rats," she said.
Rats are a fact of life in the big city. But you can make your neighborhood less "rat-friendly" if you make some effort.
- Residents said they have called the Streets and San several times since July, but nothing has happened.
"All they say is 'We'll look into it and get back to you.' One time I was told when I called that it is the owner's responsibility to clean up the site," Shivers said.
Bill McCaffrey, a spokesman for Streets and San, said he didn't know what residents were told and did not know if the city has the authority to clean up private property. He said he'd look into the problem.
Ald. Roderick Sawyer (6th) said it is true that the city cannot trespass on private property to clean it up, even if it's abandoned.
So it's no one's problem evidently. But everyone knows exactly who's to blame:
- "People Downtown think because we live in Englewood we are a bunch of savages, [that] we do not care about where we live, but they are wrong," said Robert Coley, 62. "The city could easily come out here and clean up these lots and send the bill to the owner. But because it's Englewood, they have a 'I couldn't-care-less' attitude. We pay taxes, too, and deserve better."
The neighborhood could do something about it, too. Rent a dumpster, bait the property, fill the holes, stop dumping trash onto abandoned property, tell your neighbors to stop it, and send the bill to the owners or alderman's office. Expecting the government to come in and fix things isn't a solution. Well, unless you promise to vote for them.
Which someone must have done - DNAInfo reports that the city came in and cleaned up everything. We'll bet a dollar that it's a fucked up again before the snow flies.

What a crock. I went out of town for two weeks for a family crisis last year. When the grass got too high for the ward superintendent's liking, my vacant lot got mowed by the city and I got a $300 ticket in the mail. They can't go on private property, my ass.

the west and south sides since the nato cameras and dignitaries left town are covered with artistic renditions such as you would see in a chicago city sticker art contest -- that is buildings, streets, sidewalks, fences, etc.. covered with drawings of pitch forks and crowns representing the various political parties that control the streets within the wards.

I find the giant snap traps and black boxes baited with ketchup lure the rats very well. I have them set up outside my Nside abode. I normally catch a dozen or two a year. Unfortunately they don't always die right away. Nothing like hearing a rat move around desperately while caught in a snap trap. That normally happens around 3am or so.
Have to get up, put on a pair of pants, grab a flashlight and a bat and finish the job.
Mice are attracted to peanut butter and also I hear Minnie Mouse. She's one sexy rodent.
Another good way to lure rats is to leave the carcass of a dead rat in the back of the trap box. This lures other rats to their deaths. Smells like hell after a few days in the summer though.
I recall Carol Marin writing about finding rats in her back yard.
She called the alderman's office and the City responded the same day that she called and killed the critters and baited the neighborhood.
It all depends who you are and were you live!

And I'll bet my property taxes against yours, Mr. Robert Coley, which - conservatively speaking - is 10-1 odds, that you and your non-contributing 'Englewoodians' receive ten times the city services and see ten times the amount of police than I see in my neighborhood.

Yes, you pay taxes too, but not much in the way of taxes. Just compare the property values in Englewood and the property taxes that are assessed and then try the same thing with Mount Greenwood. you will be surprised. As a matter of act, try this same thing with Ald. Burkes home. You will really be surprised. Then go down the line and check many of the political classes taxes versus their actual property value. Seeing a pattern here> When you have a two story apartment building and you only pay $500 a year in property taxes you are on to something.

Well maybe if those ghetto fools knew how to use a garbage can they wouldn't have rats all over the place. Just look at their streets- they treat the sidewalk and roadway like it is their personal trash dump. When you throw the tails of your fried "scrimp" from jj fish on the ground, or the bones of your chicken wings from harold's chicken in the street, you're going to attract vermin. As with everything else in their subsidized lives, they expect the "city" aka taxpayers to come in and clean it up because they can't lift a finger to help themselves. It's always someone else's responsibility- never theirs. And by the way, the pennies they pay in taxes are nothing compared to what people pay in neighborhoods where residents actually pick up after themselves and go to work. We pay over $8K/yr in county taxes and here's the kicker- we pay for our own road maintenance- including snow removal, and pay for garbage removal because we live in a townhouse subdivision. That's the biggest scam here now- all these new developments shell out thousands in taxes each year but get no city services. Meanwhile, cleofus down in the ghetto has city workers wiping his ass and cutting his grass- total joke! A few more years left on the job then we are gone from this state. And you are wrong about people downtown thinking you are savages- EVERYONE thinks you are savages!

Alexander Moy, 47, was arrested Monday in Hamlet, about 80 miles from Chicago in northwestern Indiana, on a charge of illegally selling wildlife, Lt. Tom Torsell of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources said.
The arrest followed a two-year investigation during which Moy bought wildlife, including turtles and fish, from undercover officers, Torsell said.

Residents should get awards or small tax breaks for having the best and most vibrant urban art. It shows community pride. As for the rats, put a bounty on each carcass. It works other places.

NEWS FLASH!!! residents of englewood are requesting assistance rather than doing things on their own. boy this is hard to believe. apparently it is not enough that we give them the most police service, give them money from our taxes, try to parent their children, walk their children to and from school and now they want others to clean up their mess they have made.

Plenty of rats-Two legged or four legged. I went to a call of a disturbance and would you know there were five grown men drinking beer and spirits on the porch. Children were playing in the vacant lot next to the porch. This lot had an array of broken bottles and when asked if any of the SSI receipients would pick up the bottles, the reply was we are not janitors and we don't get paid to clean up someone else's lot. You would think these assets in society would at least clean up for the sake of the children. You think all those females in the community would tell these deadbeats to clean up their act. Maybe the community could organize and take some personal inititive w/o the assistance of government. Maybe putting trash in the can is a winning plan.
sorry scc this is some bullshit. The city has a group that gets rid of rats. I have never seen or heard of a private citizen having to go this. In most alleys you are instructed to call 311.
