No Guns at NFL Games

Because, you know, there have been so many dozens of shootings involving cops at NFL events:
  • A new NFL policy bans off-duty law enforcement officers from taking their guns into stadiums.

As CBS 2′s [...] reports, many officers are calling foul, and fan support for the policy is mixed.

First it was the NFL’s new bag policy not scoring any points with fans this season. Now, the league’s ban on off-duty officers carrying weapons into stadiums is coming under fire.

“It’s a terrible idea because you have so many people who coming to a stadium that if an incident happens, how are the police supposed to protect and serve?” Bears fan Jeff Atkinson says.

In a statement, an NFL spokesperson says: “We believe that the interest of public safety is best served by limiting the number of weapons inside stadiums to those required by officers that perform specifically assigned law enforcement working functions and game-day duties.”
Which would be all well and good....if the NFL actually owned all the stadiums. In many cases, they don't. They lease/rent the facilities from a city, state or sports authority. Soldier Field is Park District property, so Park District rules ought to apply.

Texas handled this with its usual level headedness:
  • The National Football League has implemented a new stadium policy that would ban off-duty police officers from carrying guns into games…except in the state of Texas.

According to the NFL memo, “off-duty officers who attempt to bring firearms into an NFL facility will be denied entry.”

But a Texas state law overrides the NFL policy. As long as officers attending the game check in at a specific gate and inform Security where they are sitting – they can have their gun.

Ron Pinkston of the Dallas Police Association says that the Texas law is sensible.

“Our officers are 24/7, on or off duty, and if they run into a critical incident – they are required to take action” says Pinkston. “Our officers will be allowed to carry their weapon into [the] Stadium and other football stadiums in the State of Texas due to Texas law.”
We know a bunch of people who used to side job for various security firms inside Soldier Field and other stadiums, usually in those fluorescent jackets, and to a man they related that they were unarmed. In this day and age of the big splashy terrorist attack, the Texas solution would seem to be the sensible option.

The NFL has long been Anti-Gun, discouraging players from excercising their rights

Here is the N.F.L. policy on gun possession. It applies to all N.F.L. employees, including players:

Prohibitions

Whether possessed legally or illegally, guns and other weapons of any kind are dangerous. You and your family can easily be the losers if you carry or keep these items in your home. You must not possess these weapons while traveling on league-related business or whenever you are on the premises of the following:

A facility owned, operated or being used by an NFL club (for example, training camp, dormitory, locker room, workout site, parking area, team bus, team plane, team hotel/motel);

A stadium or any other venue being used for an N.F.L. event (for example, a game, practice or promotion);

A facility owned or operated by the N.F.L. or any league company. Put simply, the league, the Players Association and law enforcement authorities urge you to recognize that you must not possess a gun or other weapon at any time you are performing any service for your team or the N.F.L.

Note the "preamble" which is expecially humorous: guns and other weapons of any kind are dangerous. You and your family can easily be the losers if you carry or keep these items in your home. This from the same Violence Peddling corporate bloodsuckers who televised the gruesome Joe Theismann multi-fragmentary compound leg fracture, and continue to profit from the beating, breaking and incremental destruction of human bodies

This policy gives one much insight into the warped mindset that would enact such sensless rules regarding police officers, seeing as how cavalierly they treat both the bodily health, and physical safety of thier own players

Maybe the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) should write a policy prohibiting it's members from participating in Football

Last I looked stadium security was handled by a clouted firm, Monterey Security. The off duty officers working there are unarmed with no place to check weapons when they arrive. So, if they take public transportation they have to ride unarmed on the CTA. Now, won't that be fun. Of course, the CTA says citizens don't need to be armed while riding the trains and buses as they are safe.

This is 'Stoo-Pid'!!! Roger Goodell is a pansy-ass brainwashed bonehead (no offense to boneheads). This policy has the fingerprints of the Noo Yuk and Noo Jersey gun-grabbers all over it -- so I bet McCompStat loves it.

If something did happen exactly how long would that 'off duty' cop remain 'off duty'? In most places, except maybe the libtard North East, not too fucking long, it'd be all hands on deck. Then what good does an unarmed Cop do?...crickets...crickets...

Hell, there was a time that Chicago Police were never 'off duty'. Don't know if that's still the case but most folks liked it. And in those *wild days* at old Comiskey Park I hoped those off-duty cops working security were friggen armed.

Lastly, the 'off duty' Chicago Cops I knew 'back in the day' never went without a gun, usually a .38 snubby (one cop used Super Vels). I'd hope it was the same today.

>>> an aside, I wonder how much if any that 'Off Duty Cops-Biker-SUV' incident in NYC played into this? Given it was NYC 'guns' are always somehow involved -- even if not logically to most people. <<<

There is a simple solution to these asshat ideas we know our aldermen love to impose new ordinances all the time. Every business in Chicago must have a city license to operate in the city. Pass a ordinance that prohibits any business with a city license from denying Chicago police officers from entering their business while on/off-duty. If they don't like the ordinance they can relocate outside the city. Chicago police officers are required to take police action 24/7!

Where I shake my head is when I see these idiots (young and old) wearing an exposed weapon, their star on their belts and a police slogan t-shirt while shopping in the jewel, or at the park with their kids, basically just everywhere they go while off duty.
If you're carrying - conceal it, don't flaunt it. The public is not impressed, but really think that you're a nut, a Tackleberry(?) from the old police academy movies.

When there's a mass shooting by some deranged jack-off or terrorist maybe the light bulb will come on for these pricks but you must understand that this city and state are the most anti-gun entities in the country. These stupid fucking liberal pieces of shit will never understand that the only way to combat these potential killers is with equal or greater firepower. Trained police either active or retired is free security but assholes just don't understand so I say FUCK EM till the light bulb finally comes on. One armed policeman or retiree with a handgun could easily prevent serious carnage from escalating (like the Sandy Hook or Naval shipyard incidents) but these dumbfucks don't realize that so just play by the rules till the shit hits the fan and hopefully things might change.

I wont say that this policy is smart.. It's not. But this is what cops get for not supporting broad gun rights for citizens. If you think gun grabbers can go about their merry way passing laws as long as you get an exemption you are sadly mistaken. They never stop and they pressure corporations to do things like this.

With that said, your Unions and leadership have done this to you. Think of the Illinois CCW, the only cops we saw at any hearings were AGAINST CCW. the FOP didnt get involved because cops (and even retired cops) got a carve out...

That is why they include "retired" cops in all these carve outs. Because it will keep your unions and YOU from fighting against laws and goofiness.

Maybe you should back PUBLICLY and ask your Unions and organizations to back gun rights for the law abiding and we will help back you on these things.

but sorry, to see cops "feel some of our pain" will probably be good in the long run for gun rights.

This from a 20 year Marine that just came back to Illinois and has seen how this state runs.

Then the NFL said, file an appeal and we'll look at it, but the FOP missed the 180 day deadline to appeal.

I think a bigger point here is missing. The Federal law was enacted as well as local and State laws for Peace Officers to carry their weapons off duty for personal protection. You never know who you are going to run into that you arrested for a crime. Wherever you are...you don't know if some whacked out lunatic has a vendetta and wants to kill you or your family. The Federal carry law was enacted because an a convicted asshole shot and killed a Police Officer is his driveway as he was getting ready to go to work. The weapon that you carry is for your own protection as well as to protect another's life. The so called rules should not superceded the law. Today it's Soldier's Field...tomorrow it will be businesses and stores...eventually it will be off-duty. I strongly support Conceal Carry for civilians...but the rules that apply to them can be more restrictive under some circumstances. This should not apply for Peace Officers. If something ever happened to a Police Officer in an establishment that restricted Officers from carrying...that establishment should be criminally prosecuted as well as sued. Soldiers Field is Chicago Park District property. It does not belong to the NFL. I pay my taxes to support the maintenance of that property and the NFL reaps the benefits. Some out of state fuck job should not be allowed to dictate where I carry. Shame on these Politicians for allowing this to happen also. For the 2nd or 3rd largest Police Force in the United States we really get treated like shit. Texas seems to be the only State that has it's own Citizens at heart. This is the way it should be all over this Country. My hats off to Texas...as well as my deepest respect.

I also drive 20 miles an hour by speed cameras and try to slow traffic near them in my personal car.

I always spend my MONEY else where. Next I will move the hell out of here.

How do you like me now. You have free loaders on one side and people like me on the other side who don't want to go along with it business as usual.

If the NFL doesn't want us there, hell, we won't go. I'll watch the game from home if I want to see some losers in action. No guns allowed means NO GUNS ALLOWED. And guess what? If they call 9-1-1 for police assistance, since no guns are allowed, wait outside the stadium, and make the complainant come to you, since we aren't allowed entry. Follow their rules to the letter, just like everyone else (except the criminals, that is). After a couple of incidents, my guess is that they will re-think their new policy. Of course, it will be too late, just like the Denny's fiasco.

I hope this is sarcasm. While I wouldn't post a sign in MY store denying your rights, I find it perfectly acceptable for shopkeepers to post such signs in their place of business. Property owners rights usurp yours. If you don't like it, don't patronize their business.

On the other hand, the NFL rules for Off-Duty LEO's is bullshit.

With that logic, all we have to do is hang a "Whites Only" sign over our lunch counter?

In the year 2013,I sold them for $ 25,000, so make your stand if you need, but there are other chooch's lining up to buy them. I only wish I'da bought a dozen at the time !!!!

When you attend events at the United Center and Cellular Field you are asked to check your weapon. Once inside the venue you will lock your weapon in a gun locker and the officer retains the key and may pick up his or her weapon after the event. Also if you think that there is not armed security at these events then you are short sighted. Many officers have become their own worst enemies by over consumption of alcohol at these events. You all know this is true and the sins of a few goofs force the issue. It Al-Quaeda wants to detonate a WMD at one of these events, you carrying your weapon inside the venue will not prevent this. If you feel it is your duty to sneak your weapon into a venue so you can feel safe and you get your rocks off by bragging about it on the blog, then you are an idiot. People like that end up being part of the problem and probably won't react to the situation anyway. Oh yeah ... if you do get impaired at a venue and check your weapon, they will gladly hold it for you. Can't send a drunk copper out on the street with a pistol. Unless you want someone from your Dept. to come and get it. Other than that have a nice day...

Several points:

#1: The NFL's advice about players avoiding guns as they cause trouble did not do Washington D-Back Sean Taylor any good. Fatally shot by a burglar in his own house.

#2: 30% of NFL players are convicted felons?? No way. While the NFL may have the largest number of felons, that is because it is the largest rostered sport. It is a very small number. Most of the players are decent people. The NFL is very image conscious and felony record coming out of college will kill one's draft prospects. Get suspended from or kicked off your college team and kiss the pro dream good-by. The NFL does background checks on all prospects "You have a court appearance? Forget getting into the Combine." You're no good to the team if you are in jail. Some do slip thru.

As for Vick, he paid the price. He went to prison, did his probation. Lost about 1/4$B in salary and endorsements. Move on.

Some players are more savvy about their image. A clean image will make you more money off the field than you will make on it. Don't see Detroit Lion Suh in those Chrysler adds anymore, do you?

#3: A time when CPD were never off duty?? No, that may have been what the City wanted the public to think. But recruits were told otherwise. Very emphatically. Because if PO's were on-duty 24/7, any injuries would be IOD and the City would have to indemnify.

#4: No guns in stadiums: Other than the need for you to feel manly, I see no good reason for guns in stadiums. The biggest danger to you is someone spilling his beer on you.

The biggest terrorist threat today is the random mass shootings. Look at the poor shoppers in the latest mall incident.

Everyone has their opinion. Mine is just based on a little more information being on this job. I will not go out in public with my family unless I am armed. I will not go to a venue that boasts that all it's occupants are unarmed.

These things will get more prevalent, not less. Like I said, just my opinion.

I'm done going to games. I always carry off-duty.

FYI: here are a few comparisons between Houston and Chicago murder numbers. Houston has 2.1 million residents, Chicago has around 2.7 million. Houston has lots of shit areas, but numbers are numbers...unless you're working at the new Ivory Tower... Then you use some silly stat, like fewer shots were fired per murder, so the streets are safer...

Years: 2009 2010 2011 2012
Houston: 287 269 198 216
Chicago: 459 436 435 516

As SCC posted, the fields are generally owned by the government and leased to the NFL team playing there...so how does that not violate peoples' second amendment rights?

I think more states need to pass a preemption statute like Texas but apply it to peace officers AND CCW holders.

I have to agree with the writer. I off duty security for the bear games for years and never saw a need for a firearm inside the stadium. To and from the stadium if you are taking public trans is another story.

That is why they include "retired" cops in all these carve outs. Because it will keep your unions and YOU from fighting against laws and goofiness.

Yes, as a retired police officer I must agree with the marine. The anti-gunners always say they are supported by the police when in reality they are only supported by the local police chiefs, not the rank and file. The police chief must support his mayor of lose their job. I have seen more then one instance where a citizen has used a concealed handgun to save their life or the life of another and that person was always treated with respect by the police on the scene. In fact they shook his hand. Every person who is against concealed carry should be required by law to wear a button saying they are gun free and put signs on their homes declaring the house gun free. Wonder how that would work for them??
