Rahm's Going to Love This
- Three Georgia legislators have proposed licensing bicycles in the state, in what could become the first mandatory statewide registration of all bikes.
Hawaii now is the only state that requires registration, said Douglas Shinkle, senior policy analyst at the National Conference of State Legislatures. It has a one-time $15 fee for bicycles with wheels 20 inches or more in diameter; owners get a decal to attach to the bike's seat post.
Other states — including California, Michigan and Ohio — allow counties or cities to enact bike license laws but none would be as broad as Georgia House Bill 689, which would revise portions of state motor vehicle law to include bicycles and place specific rules on groups of riders.
And of course, it's for your own good:
- One benefit from such a law would be to prevent bicycle theft and allow bikes that are stolen to be returned with greater frequency to their owners, Shinkle said. Oregon and Vermont proposed legislation earlier this year that tried to make bike registration mandatory, but neither bill was successful.
And the fact that cyclists don't contribute to the state coffers in the form of gas taxes or red light cameras or speeding tickets, thereby starving the government of revenue has nothing at all to do with it, right?

John Kass predicted this about a year ago in one of his columns.
Huh?
No freshly twisted balloon animal of distraction?
>Squeeky Squooky Squeek!<
*POP!*
Rahm just creamed in his spandex bike shorts.
I think these assholes are really oxygen starved and slowly going insane.
Hear Gov. Potato Head and Madigan's Minions are going to require licensing ATVs in Ill-noise. Yeah, piss off the redneck hunters. A stroke of "genius" by a bunch of strokes. What next, my Deere yard tractor? Go F**K yourselves, thieves!
Damn it, it's for the children!!!!!
This is a trend in the U.S. Many of the latest generation are not getting drivers licenses and can't afford cars and all the costs associated with them. Welcome to the de industrialization.
Of course the taxman will not be denied even if you ride a bike from your s.r.o.
Why stop there....how about baby strollers, roller blades, skateboards...maybe even lawnmowers....
In August we were on the island of Oahu and staying in Waikiki. While there, I saw a bicycle chained to a post which and a No Parking sign attached. A motorized meter maid wrote a ticket and attached it to the bike.
A good idea. No, a great idea. As long as bicycles are going to clog up the streets roads and highways, than register them, require a bicycle license and maybe even minimal operating insurance. Just like cars and trucks. If it rolls on wheels on the public roadways, then register it, regulate it, and tax it. A win - win for everyone.
I hope it happens in all 53 states.
I agree and if they choose to ride on the street they should be required to wear a helmet as well as have a minimum level of front and rear lighting attached to their bike. They should also wear a specific reflective vest.
Can someone in 019 discuss the new bike path on Berteau and Clark that is going up? On the one-way sign they have another sign below that says "except bikes". Were told they have to follow traffic laws but now that is in question?
I'm all for it. These asshole bicyclists don't seem to think red lights or stop signs apply to them. Now mind you I don't mean all, but most don't. Make'em pay.
SCC, I agree with any law that goes after Bicylists. These clowns think they own the road. They run every red light and stop sign. They go the wrong way down one way streets. We have special lanes for these assholes. They want on the street they should be licensed and ticketed to MAXIMUM!!!! They rules should apply to everyone. Not just those in cars who actually contribute to our ecomony (buying gas, cars, repairs, insurance, etc, etc).
I'm not sure this is entirely a new idea? When I was around 5-6, in the mid-50's, say '54, I seem to recall some bigger Bicycles did have a 'Chicago License Plate'.
This wasn't just for 'motorized Schwinn bicycles' kids had or 'mopeds'. They were on the larger delivery type Schwinns that had 'balloon tires' and a big basket on front. The plate was mounted-hung from the rear of the bike's huge seat.
I know they made 'play license plates' for kids bikes and still do, but these weren't those. Granted I could be completely wrong but again I do seem to recall bigger kids (teens) who had pt jobs and these bikes had them.
--- No I haven't Googled it. I found that doesn't find everything 'old', like when Chicago also had a 'Chicago Park District Police Department'. It was merged with the CPD around 1956 and the Real Chi Police were too not pleased. That search turns up squat. ---
Nothing new. When I was in college in the 70's, the small town it was in did this.It was a $1 I think.
It could be worse-----I have relatives in Ireland, where they pay a tax of between $350-$500 yearly on every TV they own....
Shiny ball. Shiny ball. Shiny ball.
Cellphones will be next.

What happened to the squirrel? It was here a minute ago. Oh look, a shiny ball.
It's about time (and $$$)
Fuckin Vultures, Anything to squeeze even more money out of Middle Class Taxpayers, so the Politically Connected can continue their lavish lifestyles, because they've already raped and bankrupted the Country, and of course, still want more of your hard earned money to continue their Party.
Next Step, a Chip that detects how far you've walked, taxed by the Government per mile. Also how much food and water you consume. Pay,Pay,Pay, till you can't pay no more. Then live on Government crumbs, or die.
This is what happens as a Country slides first into Socialism, then Communism, then Totalitarianism.
What if you are an out of state visitor that brings your own wheels?
This country is flucked.
Well, New Jersey is going to start to register panhandlers!! However, they will need to provide a Photo ID and we all know how hard it is to get one of those!!
Funny how it is discriminatory to ask one of a person who wants to vote in how "other people's" money is used/given out, yet logical in having one to directly ask somebody for a handout! Eesh!
Every time you turn your back to them they come up with another tax.
Unfortunately I would to see this..I work downtown. I drive around all day witnessing these idiots on bicycles ride along blowing red lites and stop signs with impunity. I'm sure this was the plan all along. Why set up bike lanes and even bike street lites ei lasalle n wacker if there wasn't something for the tax man. I'd love to see a bicyclist get hit with a nice ticket for causing a three car pile up downtown. Plus now that there's those Divy stations set up everywhere I'm sure you'll have to get a temporary bicycle license.
Wish I thought of it!
Plus now that there's those Divy stations set up everywhere I'm sure you'll have to get a temporary bicycle license.
The Divvy bikes actually belong to the taxpayers. The company is just administering the plan. Maybe they can make the redlight cameras sensitive enough to take a picture when a bicycle with it's temp tag blows through the light. Uhh, my bike plate was stolen again, office....
First you register bikes. Then you license them, plates on them for $5.00 or so, another source of revenue. Small smart card thing on each plate. Detectors at major intersections, then, you guessed it, red light tickets for bicycles. I love it. More money for the City! Yay!
And safety. Think of the safety! Cuts down on bicycle injuries and fatalities after running red lights.
Can you imagine the bike riders howling over that one? And we get to stop them and ticket them for no Bike License Plate! I love it!
How about putting plates on them an giving them red light and speed zone tickets? Most of those regular bike commuters drive like total assholes. And guess who'd get the ticket if they cut in front of you or turn in front of you with no warning? You.
They should also be required to carry insurance.
I'd love to see the city do something other than encourage and enable these fucking assholes. I travel extensively, and nowhere in the country (except perhaps SF) has such a group of reckless, self-entitled and dangerous bikeys as Chicago.
Bikeys have killed three pedestrians in SF in the last two years. It will get that bad in Chicago if these assholes aren't reigned in.
License them, force them to carry liability insurance and for fuck's sake, slap that $200 ticket on them for riding on crowded sidewalks.
