15,000 Free Rides

  • An outage on the Ventra Card system that shut down at least some Ventra readers at 60 of the CTA's 145 "L" stations this afternoon and evening resulted in 15,000 free rides for commuters before the problem was fixed, according to the CTA.

    A "back-office server" failed about 4:30 p.m., causing Ventra readers to go out in a ripple effect that shut readers down from anywhere from 15 to 90 minutes, said CTA spokeswoman Tammy Chase.

    The card readers affected were rebooted, with customer service employees at CTA stations waving through riders in the interim. In total, 165 card readers were affected, out of about 800 Ventra readers at rail stations, Chase said. Buses and other Ventra machines were not affected, she said.
Anyone losing their job over this? No? Exactly the same as Obamacare.

    If the ventra or obamacare debacle happened at a company like GE, the project manager would of been gone a month ago. Obamacare has a female in charge of the health department, Sebelius and her subordinate in charge of the actual website program is a female. Women should not be immune from being fired. I believe in equality.

    What was wrong with the old system?

    It's not a 'Ventra Card', it's a 'Claypool Card.' And, when the system went down it should be called a 'Claypool Event!' I really hate to say this; but, I think there would not have been such problems if Ron Huberman had been in charge at CTA. I think Claypool is in way over his head with this technical stuff. Then again, isn't that the Claypool story overall? A gadfly political gnat annoying the populace with his mere presence; or is it just me?

    the secrete word is 'glitch'

    have you noticed that all f-ups are called glitches. obamacare, ventra, etc...

    see, ya see.

    this is why the sgts exam is afu. the study materials are asking about omissions and/or errors and we call all that shit glitches now. how we spose to answer that -- nineteen-paul

    I think this is way under-estimated (Wait a minute, under-reporting, in Chicago? Give me a moment to pick my jaw up off the ground!)I ride the #77
    almost daily, and on any ride, I see 6-7 people where the card just doesn't work and the passengers ride for free. In many cases my old-style magnetic card no longer works and I have ridden for free also. Mind you, I'm only on the bus for less than two miles, so just multiply this by X and you'll begin to understand the true scope of this issue. Kudos to Rahm and Co. for launching this around the same time as the ACA, perhaps they knew it would take the heat off them.

    Of course Ventra is screwed up. It's from the Gubmint. You know, all those over educated *experts* with 85 letters after their names like; BSMAPhDJDDR, EIEI-fucking-Oshit who all *graduated* with *top honors* like: Magnum Cum Daddy [watch it, Keesing Bandit ;-)]. But I digress, here's some sage words on these assholes in charge.

    As President Ronald Maximus [Reagan ;-)] said oh so prophetically;
    -- "The nine most terrifying words in the English language are: 'I'm from the government and I'm here to help.'"--

    Then there's that oh-so famous Philosopher, 'Anonymous';
    -- "A camel is a horse designed by a committee" (today everything that comes from the certified morons running the gubmint is a fucking 'Camel')(no offense to Camels) [smoke 'em if ya got 'em ;-)]

    And from the father of modern conservatism, the honorable -- William F. Buckley Jr.;
    --'“I would rather be governed by the first 2000 people in the Manhattan phone book than the entire faculty of Harvard.”--

    Lastly, following up on our over-educated pinhead 'betters' who just must tell us morons on 'what's best' -- famed American 'humorist' (philosopher?), Mark Twain;
    --'I have never let my schooling interfere with my education.'--

    But seriously, the ways things are going, and it sure 'ain't' good, the 'zombie' apocalypse looks like it's coming with all the shit in the news, we may have to take William Shakespeare's words to heart as Standing Order No 1:
    "The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers" (Henry VI, Part II, act IV, Scene II)

    You really have love and laugh that Obama and Rahm rolled out their programs even after being told they weren't ready.....it's amazing how arrogant these 2 assholes are....

    They are admitting to 15,000. Do the math, that many machines at 4:30; they had more than 15,000 free rides.

    Why dosen't Claypool and the rest of
    the CTA higher-up's just admit that
    Ventra is a failure and go back to
    depending on what they collect from
    the bus farebox and "L/Subway" turnstiles. At least the fares they
    collect would be theirs to keep.
    Admit Mr. Claypool, the CTA "Venture" into the "banking" business is a complete failure and the mayor's defence of it is downright stupid. Oh and Claypool,
    leave Lake and Jefferson every now
    and then and ride your buses and
    trains and see for yourself what the real deal is, Dave Kruesi did when he had your job, or do you care ?

    Who's brother-in-law at the CTA owns Ventra?

    This is "gotta guy" all over it.

    Nothing the matter at all with the old fare and Chicago cards.

    Change for change's sake?

    Ventra is a mini ObamaCare for Rahmmie

    ATM technology is really not 30 years old, is it? It must be some magic genie the banks use that can't be duplicated...

    The widespread use of machines to pre-pay your parking fee in many office and commercial buildings that allow you to swipe and tally your time and pay so the arm rises ? That's like the mystery of fire to the cavemen running political "projects" meant to "save taxpayer money" and "make things run more efficiently in the 21st century."

    Let's be honest. Total up the cost of all the time-saving and cost-cutting projects and programs in the CTA over the last 20 or more years.
    Has anything saved money, cut costs, or made the system run any differently than when a human took your fare on a train or bus?

    Quite the contrary. No one asks why before they finish paying the tab on one system overhaul, they've already announced that because it's obsolete, it's time for another system-wide installation project of machines, card readers and systems no one wants, needs, or understands.

    Then they wonder why ridership goes down when we're supposedly trying to achieve greener, energy conscious public transportation to alleviate traffic and congestion.

    This buffoon president will have spent 8 years running at the mouth about "roads and bridges," and, "nuclear, wind and solar...and public transportation," and all the while this country's elected corruptocrats take more of your money, and ensure everything they touch is an endless improvement project.
    Goodbye, America. We're the new soviet states.

    Just so you all know, Ventra is a private company that CTA contracted with to save money so they could fire the customer service people based in Chicago. Ventra is not a government agency. It is out there in the free market that everyone loves so much.
