Blatant Media Slant Continues

The Tribune is once again playing politics with Police Department issues.

The article linked at the bottom of today's posts has been altered beyond recognition. The last half-a-dozen paragraphs which told the story of the Officer's efforts to reach out to the family, the conversation they had, the explanation and regret he expressed over the mistake, have all disappeared from the story completely.

Instead, they are now quoting the convicted felon who allegedly had the gun that allegedly disappeared following the confrontation.

We don't know about you, but this altering of the narrative by the media is a giant red flag that screams "political prosecution" to us. We don't see anything wrong about covering the fact that the detective has expressed regret and contrition, but the media eliminating all mention of this when it was featured so prominently not even 10 hours ago? Someone got a phone call.

And that's a sworn official of this city whose been shoved under a speeding, double-length city bus for defending himself...makes you fear what they'll do what to the average citizen who defends himself. Conceal carry has been working in 49 other states but Chicago of course will find a way to make IL look like a bunch of corrupt asses. Time to get outta dodge.

There is no more unbiased media. Every outlet has their own agenda. impartial reporting doesn't exsist on Chicago streets. It went the way of good grammer, belts for sagging pants, and knockout game free days...Everything can be twisted and turned and fitted into any shape to fit and be presented to any given cause... As long as the ADs keep selling.

Sometimes they're actually NOT "out to get ya'"... reporters are supposed to write in an inverted pyramid style so the 'detail' information can be cut easily at layout if the story is too long. Confident that's why the bottom chunk disappeared - newspaper space is critically short since these damn rags have to make money.

The question actually is - since when did these become only "details"? Seems pretty critical to the narrative to me...

It is odd that this stuff disappeared from the story. I read it yesterday and it was definitely all there. I have a couple of reactions as somebody with some practical experience in these areas: (1) I thought I read that somebody was filming the officer's visit to the neighborhood, and then the sister was quoted making various claims about what the officer said. It wasn't clear to me whether the reporter had witnessed the video; certainly the reporter wasn't there for the statements, or all of them. The video might have omitted a lot. I can see the officer's lawyer calling up the paper and asking that this material be removed or claiming that it somehow didn't tell the whole story or somehow portrayed the officer in a false light; and (2) honestly, I didn't think publication of his account was that helpful to the officer. He's facing a felony charge. He doesn't need his post-incident actions and statements to the family splayed all over the newspaper. When I first read it, I cringed a little bit. He might be better off with that stuff taken out.

And WTF is up with that "fully automatic Glock" bullshit? Chicago media is the absolute fucking worst for anti-Police bias...

They have run plenty of interference for, stymied any constructive course of action against and kissed the asses of the politicians, corporatist thieves and catered to constituents who have totally destroyed this city as a haven for working people.

Chicago is fucked up beyond the ability of good and honest men to correct and the apparent course of action to correct that has been an ongoing political Civil War and media propaganda campaign against The Police.

Funny how all the joyful haters are given air and opportunity to give short shrift to what is so obviously being orchestrated from City Hall.

Nobody has yet to figure that The Media WAR of intentionally slanted, misleading and inflamatory reporting against the Men and Women of CPD as de facto public policy, is a WAR against the few decent people left in Chicago who truly need and WANT a robust, fully staffed and fully engaged Police Department with competent leadership and energized, fully empowered and supported officers.

That being said...

The media and their masters at City Hall apparently want no part of that.

The Police are intentionally being made to "go away" as part of a political agenda...

You hard chargers ought to be aware of that.

Can't you see that the powers FEAR US even in our intentionally depleted condition?

It's absolutely maddening when Chicago Patrolmen have the power to force a change in this town but cannot due to incompetent/compromised leadership seemingly devoted to walking us backwards while talking about how much we've "gained..."

Since when did Patrolmen make a promise to keep one hand tied behind their backs in a fight for survival?

Hello? Anybody care to weigh in?
>Crickets...<

*The Police are the problem in Chicago... Once we "fix" them, everything else will fall in place.*

We truly believe that The Police will soon be made to "go away" in Chicago.

It's not about reform, it's not about proper oversight, it's not about training and/or lack of training, or even all the trumped-up bean-counter ballyhoo from 3510 S. Michigan or 111 N. LaSalle about "maximizing efficiencies" and "doing more with less."

It's only partially about money...
Considering all the tax-payer treasure stolen by little malignant men past and present in the 5th floor executive suite at City Hall.

The Police are just convenient whipping boys to deflect attention from the ones truly responsible.

It is the artfully managed, media driven demonization for deconstruction's sake of a Police Department.

Happening right before your eyes, Chicago.

No... Wait... They're actually cheering and throwing confetti...

"Go away you Cops! We don't WANT you!"

Nevermind...

Now it's an "unregistered Glock," instead of a "fully automatic Glock" as reported earlier...

Maybe they'll censor the handful of comments that said "WTF?" in regard to the full auto reference from earlier.

May every media member be reduced to one day mincing onions and celery into some cat food just as they're hoping to reduce Policemen to the same fate...

The Tribune is famous for editing stories on the fly. The first edition of the story is often far different the next day. This is a cowardly way to do it. If I were teaching journalism I would show the student a Chicago Tribune as a good example of how to bastardize a newspaper and how not to do it.

If I ever get a chance to fuck that paper I surely will.

Except for Kass.

SCC, I realize it's probably a wasted effort to try and do so, but why not freeze out the media from all aspects of the CPD?
Can anyone honestly sit here and say that these people are our friends? I know that many coppers have friends or someone that knows someone in the media, but what reason do we have to offer these parasites a god damn thing?
Time and again, day after day, year after year, all I do is sit at home or in court and read the newspaper or watch the news and see the news as related to CPD in a negative light or simply the way they would like to slant it.
I can't sit here and say that policeman don't make great targets without fault of anyone but themselves, but when is enough, enough?
When are we going to simply wake up and treat these pricks like what the are? News pimps. Pimping out anyone or anything to get the next break or leg up no matter the cost to anyone's reputation, career or family.
Everyone is captivated for the whole 5 seconds that any of these media outlets spend on something heroic or a nice narcotic seizure, but let's look at what really sells what's left of the newspapers or makes the best opening on the 10 o'clock news. Police corruption and the police fucking up! Oh and don't forget when a copper gets killed in the line of duty. God forbid these motherfuckers don't come and butt in on that whole event, bothering the families and pretending they give a rat's ass.
It's rammed down our throats 100 times a day, i.e. Abate, Finnigan, Frugoli if the department or that officer can be made to look like shit or slant it to sell fucking papers.
I know we chose to be the police , but we didn't choose to not stand a chance with this rotten fucking media and how they or city hall want us to look.
It's time we take a serious look at giving them what they deserve from the CPD--Absolutely fucking nothing.
Sorry for the rant, but this problem never goes away and seems to get a little worse each year only adding to the overall bad view that the people we police have of us anyway.

It wrote: "The Union's interpretation of the City's letter demonstrate either a willful blindness towards its contents or a failure to recognize the legal import of its statement."

I think that is called in the legal community as a "bitch slap."

GREAT post (thanks for taking the time to put all of it here).
1. I betcha a handful of city workers are assigned to make certain RAHM'S path to the car and path up the street and path to his first stop of the day are all salted and dry and sunshiney, too. It's just the peasants who must fend for themselves on the ice, without a teaspoon of salt on the streets or the intersection sidewalks.
2. So, how are those reductions in services Rahm Emanuel instituted since taking office working out for everybody? Reduced salting? Reduced graffiti removal? Reduced rat abatement? Reduced tree-trimming?

Well, look at it from the civilian's standpoint: CPD has a pretty lousy reputation. The good cops, it seems, are the minority. I've been a Chicago resident for 15+ years and have had only one positive interaction with CPD in that time. One of my former coworkers, a former Marine, got a mid 6 figure brutality settlement after 4 officers gave him stick time. Stories like this are more common than good stories.

As for this Detective - I know that CPD officers will defend him and I respect that. However, what irritates me is that for every police shooting, the stance here is infallibility - you as officers can do no wrong.

You want the public to support you? Simple: get rid of bad cops. Otherwise the civilian populace will continue to think that CPD is the biggest and most organized gang in the city.

Since when is the Trib liberal?

Since the bankruptcy - check the editorial page. Republican isn't necessarily conservative.

Worked the desk on occasion in a number of districts and it was always fun to answer the phone when someone from the "news" would call. What? Your'e not aware of the Haz Mat incident at ......? Your'e kidding me? No idea about the train derailment at....? Yeah, that's what I said! Three people shot at ....! Always fun to yank their chain.

This former member of the media would like to thank you personally because that is how I got my training at City News. "If your mother says she loves you, check it out." Desk people used to pull that stuff on us all the time, to the point where we thought it was funnier than they did. Those were friendlier days between us. I am out of the business but sense a lot more hostility now, not that there wasn't hostility then, and I thank you for that too. After a year of getting stories despite these kinds of antics and many doors slammed in my face, I was ready for anything, in and out of the news business. For the record I always thought most of you were pretty good guys, even that meanie Earl Johnson.

Lol. Get back underneath that desk at 35th street 019 detail at the Academy. And stay there until your finished. Debauched people everywhere on this job. How do they look in the mirror in the morning. Scumbugs will do anything to keep that spot.

After reading the Tribunes front page today (27 Nov 13) about a W-------- Copper that stepped on it and was dealt with, the Tribune thought it necessary to run two small columns on the front page and two full length of the page columns inside the paper.
So, an email was sent to the reporter and believe it or not-he responded! The response is below and original email to the reporter below that:

Thanks for your thoughts. I've written many times about good works of police officers, firefighters, veterans and other public servants. I'm on friendly terms with many in law enforcement and other arenas of public service.

Have a nice holiday. Thanks for reading.

Subject: A suggestion....

Dan,
Instead of the overboard, re-hashed article about the W-------- Police Officer that you apparently feel that story is worth four columns in today's Tribune, why not try a different spin on what Police Officers are about. That Officer made a mistake and was dealt with. Why the rant?
That Officer gave no comment-smart on his part as the media will twist whatever he says as the media so desires...
Why not do an article on say, a Chicago Police Officer named Richard Cervenka Jr appearing also in today's Tribune.
In the Obituaries.
31 years of service.
Promoted to Sergeant. A US Marine, Viet Nam Veteran. Be a lot of juice on his story. And a lot more interesting. Sounds like a true hero to me.
I learned more in his small Obit than the crap you slung at the Woodstock Officer!
No, I do not know either Officer.
By the way, why doesn't the Tribune feature stories on Reporters that "step on it"? Tactics reporters use to get stories, embellishment and flat out lies.
I'd always get a kick out of Walter Jacobsen when he had his run ins with Police.
Just an idea...
Now, more than ever support for the Police is needed and warranted. Pension reform is a hot topic-do some real investigative reporting on where all the money went??
Do your job and find that good that almost all Officers possess. It's your obligation to do so, unbiased and with truth in ALL the facts.
Thanks and perhaps give thanks tomorrow at your Thanksgiving Dinner for the Police, Firefighters, Veterans and all other First Responders keeping you and your family safe while away from their families while you're at home with yours....

Read some of the comments after the article. People in this city really hate us. As far as I am concerned they can have their city and the police department they want. I am out of here in 1 more long year!

You might as well have stopped with "Stories like this are more common than good stories."

So, because the media hyperdramatizes negative incidents, you have decided there are far more bad cops than good ones. You illustrate - perfectly - SCC's header for this topic. Stop being a clueless sheep and start using your brain. As it is, you are thinking exactly the way the media WANTS you to think. Doesn't that alone make you want to sick up your lunch?

Hey pal. You can kiss my hairy bean bags. Next time your liberal ass is in trouble turn to the shit bag that got locked up and sued the officer. See if he'll lend you a hand.

My guess is that he'll go through your pockets after you got the fuck knocked out.

You can not comment on police shootings unless you are the officer involved. Yeah. There's nothing officers like to do more than go out and shoot "innocent" jag offs.

Do not comment on a profession you know nothing about.

That would be like me criticizing your fellatio tactics.

It has been two years and the same sgt from 019 is still blogging about the same p.o. Everyone knows who you are PC and you are a psycho stalker. How does a sgt who has been stripped twice for booze have the balls to talk about anyone else?

Heh...

IF he IS on friendly terms, why the disclaimer?

>Crickets<

The Police are the enemy...
That's the narrative the media has been constructing for the last 20 years.

Right?

Not everything is a conspiracy.
It appears the part of the article referred to in your comment was incorporated into a separate article for the newspaper. (see page 2 of this link)

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/ct-chicago-police-shooting-rekia-boyd-20131125,0,4179361.story?page=1
The passage referred to is all in this story, which was a sidebar to the main story in the paper and online. This story is a related item on the original story about the charges.
