More Mortgage Fraud?
A whole bunch of people are looking at time over this. Now comes word of another mortgage scandal brewing:
- A Chicago Police officer was ordered held in lieu of $25,000 bond Thursday after he was charged in a mortgage-fraud scheme that netted nearly $750,000.
Darius Thompson, 32, of Chicago, was charged with multiple counts of felony theft, loan fraud, money-laundering, wire fraud and forgery for his alleged role in a plot to falsify mortgage applications during his previous employment as a loan processor and originator.
Prosecutors claim Thompson’s co-defendant, Terrence Reese, filled out loan applications for buyers with inaccurate jobs, salaries and assets and then gave them to Thompson to submit while he worked at First Star Funding in Olympia Fields.
Reese allegedly would then get fraudulent liens against the properties and pay Thompson a kickback. Prosecutors claim losses from the loans, filed on three different occasions in 2010 and 2011, are $749,162, with Thompson’s portion $42,717.
Thompson, a probationary officer working out of the 5th District, was arrested Wednesday at CPD Headquarters at 3510 S. Michigan Ave.
So this is one of those things where actions prior to becoming the police are going to come back and haunt the rest of us? Though he barely has 3 minutes on the job and hasn't even finished probation, he's already labeled a "Chicago Police officer" and will carry that label through trial, separation, and if convicted, he'll be "convicted Chicago cop" at sentencing. How wonderful.

There was another ppo arrested this week. So who the heck is Ladner hiring?!? Because the other one was so damned special no one who dealt with him was sure how he made it through the hiring process and academy.

If the charges are true, he deserves to be punished. I wonder though, why does the government only go after the low hanging fruit? Why hasn't any top management personnel from Wall Street been charged from the credit bubble of 2001 to the implosion in the summer of 2008? The credit reporting agencies lied, the banks lied, etc. yet not a single person was charged! Simply astounding.

I agree with you SCC but I have to ask what kind of background checks this city is doing on new hires because the investigation for this shit didn't just materialize last week. It still doesn't change what you're saying though that all cops are going to get painted with this shit bag's brush.

No one has been charged with a crime because the loan originators did exactly what the regulators and the GSEs wanted them to do. You can't make mortgage loans to sub-prime borrowers without risk. When Fannie and Freddie insist that 57% of purchased loans are sub-prime, the market is in trouble.
When a guy like Angelo Mozilo was running Countrywide he saw the politicians and GSE executives for what they were. Whores. He donated a fortune to both sides of the aisle and had guys like Dodd and Raines as part of the "Friends of Angelo" club. A friend told me that he is a son of a butcher from the Bronx. He is 75 and his wife is dead. He will spend all $600 million of his net worth to defend himself and bring down every single politician along with him.
Wow, it is like Rahm was a board member of Freddie Mac and picked up millions as compensation because of all that advanced mortgage theory work he did while getting a PhD in Econometrics.
The first red flag should have been on his background check when he indicated that he attended the John Paluhusky School of Finance, Auditing and Accounting.

In 2004, there was a bank robber that was caught and convicted. The headline said former CPD officer. The article mentioned that he had been on the job for about 6 months in 1964. He got fired back then and was not in law enforcement. It was however in their fucking headline. I was so mad, I wrote the Tribune. No response. Media fools.

I've heard people make commments like "I cant believe that PPO drives a Range Rover." What they don't realize that the car is actually ten years old, with 160k miles, and was probably purchased for 10k. Don't worry about other people, worry about yourself. Maybe use a rubber and put the wife to work and you can get a nicer car......I know you don't give a fuck, but you obviously do.

Why don't they list who they are and what their qualifications are to teach new officers of the department. This can be posted under data warehouse and bureau sites. Sounds easy doesn't it? Never will happen!
3 commanders kids drive Audi's and I also know of 5 Streets and San/Water Dept people driving Lexus/Benz Trucks.

The majority of resisting and obstructing charges are dropped due to the dubious nature of them. If someone is not convicted, it is very hard to hold it against someone.
