Show Us the Money

  • A proposal to hire more police officers rather than pay up to $100 million in overtime died in the Budget Committee Monday.

The measure, which would have diverted $25 million in the 2014 city budget to hire at least 200 and as many as 500 more officers, was tabled under a motion by Ald. James Balcer (11th), head of the Public Safety Committee.

  • Budget Director Alexandra Holt testified Monday that, while a rookie officer has a salary of $43,000, total first-year costs of hiring that officer were $76,000.

"The costs begin to accumulate quite quickly," Holt added, with police salary topping $100,000 within four years.
Really? Someone has been shorting us then. Let's get out the calculators. We're owed at least a quarter million at those rates. Anyone else want to hop on this one?

Hey SCC, this is your new buddy, Police Superintendent Bronx Bullschitz here. You and I know why she said coppers make $100,000 a year. That's right, so they tell a fat lie to the taxpayers and make police officers look like a bunch of greedy sons of a bitches, that's why.
Any bets if any of these local journalists pick up on it? Calling Frank Main!

By the way, the other night a poster called me "Bronx Bagballs". Can you please tell your readers to stop being rude?

whelp, what's it gonna be... 43,000 dollars a year to put a rookie cop on the street or 52,195 dollars to keep an inmate locked up for a year.

kind-a shows you where a rookie ranks in value on the mayoral maslow pyramid of value, yes.

inmates vs cops are just another tool that can be used to extort 'protection money' from taxpayers.

i mean look...the city is fucked. if we spend 42,000/yr to put one more cop on the beat and he puts one, just one thug in jail for a year, then the taxpayer is out 42,000 + 52,195 == 94,195 dollars.

and we would hope that more than on thug with a one year sentence would be going to jail.

cuz ya know damn well the corporations are not gonna anti-up. corporations get tax breaks because they create the much needed sweat shop jobs.

how many walmart workers would it take even if the walmart worker contributed one-hundred percent of their salary to fund the 52,195 for one year let alone the 94,195.

this is the politician fun with numbers trickery at it's finest,

"The costs begin to accumulate quite quickly," Holt added, with police salary topping $100,000 within four years'

yeah, that's what it used to cost. what's it gonna cost once they shift everyone on obamacare and make the officers pay for it. after the pensions are robbed and it's the officers not the corrupt city liars that will deal with the increased contributions...

and let us not forget the soaring cost of living with an a-hole union fuck-up that has been either unwilling or unable to perform it's most basic function that of which an 8th grader could handle.

are we really expected to buy that this was just a glitch, a paperwork error, a memory lapse. now that is your conspiracy theory right there.

The cynic in me has me thinking this is all part of a plan... Don't hire more officers that would be contributing their share and causing the city to contribute their own share to the pension so the number crunchers can show how unsustainable it is.

Wake up boys and girls, and more importantly FOP & PBPA. I know we have a no job action clause, however since VSWO are voluntary there should be a way to list a Friday or Saturday night that no one works without facing consequences of being made a fair share member.

Basically, we are all, myself included, scabs hurting ourselves and I for one have now cancelled all future special. Before anyone responds how much they need the money, etc... you'll need it just as much in retirement as well and at this rate it will not be there.

In honor of his spirit and striving to help all of the oppressed, how about the weekend of MLK Day or President's Day, then once more Easter Weekend?

If new hires go elsewhere their lifetime compensation in this career will be higher. Also with no residency their expenses and quality of life will be greater.

of course if you hire more officers you have to put money into the pension fund which we all know the city does not know how to or want to do.train an officer you will have him for 29 and a day pay him overtime and he's gone in one tour.it's all about the city taking the cheapest way out.i don;t know who does the calculations on our salary but we are all owed alot of retro pay..oh i forgot we donot get retro pay.

The pension fund will be at ZERO in 10-12 years. Repeat, the pension fund will be at ZERO in 10-12 years. Quicker if less are paying in. If you judge not by words, but by actions the only deduction is that Rahm wants it to be zero. That lets him off the hook to make the required contributions. If there is no fund then there is nothing to contribute to.

Then again, it could be that the woman is just a retard and UNINTENTIONALLY quoted the total costs to the city for those officers. Not sure what your specific "overhead" is regarding insurance, taxes, etc. but you cannot go too far wrong with quoting salary, overtime, etc and adding 25% of that total to come up with the total nut.

Spouting that $100K figure as your annual salary however is either a sign of dishonesty or stupidity - neither of which are in short supply at Shitty Hall.

"But you all keep voting democrat. They're for the working man."

    11/27/2013 12:25:00 AM

The Wall Street backed corporatist demo-commie-crats of the large urban centers of this nation, (of which, Chicago stands head and shoulders above the rest,) are leading the charge to render the "working man" obsolete.

Particularly if said "working man" is a public safety employee with collective bargaining rights...

    Look. Around. And see.
    What is REALLY happening.

Your pensions represent the last big honey-pots of unmolested (for the most part) "other people's money" just sitting around doing nothing... And it's just driving the Wall Street bunch crazy that they can't outright steal it from you.

    Hiya Rahm!
You shriveled, crooked little false-flagging bastard...

It's really about catering to people who will mindlessly pull the straight democratic lever to keep them in power.

You "working men" don't fit into the demo-commie-crat calculus because you hold "old fashioned" notions like work, responsibility, duty, decency and integrity.

The "working man" (public safety employee with collective bargaining rights) in America is done for...

    The FIGHT is coming...

Those with good common sense should be frightened out of their wits.

As it is, The Patrolman has no friends or allies.

"Other Peoples Money" IS the prime mover behind any ginned-up, spun by the media pretext at the behest of their Wall Street and political masters.

Okay, once and for all. Hiring is not going to solve the pension problem - might keep it a alive for a couple more years thats about it. The problem and what most of you fail to address is that the city is not contributing their portion which is rougly 12.2% (we contribute 9% per pay check). Sure we can use more p.o.'s in OUR neighborhoods but the reality is that they're gonna end up patrolling you know where, so enough of the bitching about hiring more to shore up the pension. START ATTACKING THE PROBLEM which is the city's failure to contribute its portion!

Shouldn't the first and most important concern a mayor should have is the safety of his citizens? You don't build another park right on top of a park, when crime is flying high and you don't have enough police officers to stop that crime. If the mayor says he doesn't have enough money to hire police officers, then there obviously isn't enough money to build another park. A park is a luxury, not a necessity. No politician cares about the citizens. I fucking hate them all.

When you bake-in the salary, healthcare, pension, vacation, and other costs that accrue to an average figure of what a rank-and-file Chicago police officer costs, I begin to wonder what is the all-in cost of the typical shitbird gangbanger that gets shot and patched-up at the hospital at public expense.

Then we can get in to the cost figures of the able-bodied welfare recipients buying food with public assistance money and then selling the prepared food in the summmer at house front stands along S. Pulaski.

My brother has worked for a chain store in the Chicago area for 20 plus years without missing more then a few days of work.

He and others like him living at the community for "mentals" as they are commonly referred to by some CPD are taxed on the meger earnings they are paid because they receive public assistance.

I can see the logic of their being taxed, a nominal amount. But what is fucked up is that, for the most, part the people in his community are mentally challenged thru no fault of there own. It's genetic. Yet on the other hand we have perfectly able-bodied gangbangers and welfare hustlers that just suck from the public teat and don't put anything in.

    I don't begrudge cops pulling down $100K, all-in.

You put your lives on the line everyday and deal with some pretty fucked-up situations. Cops behind a desk? Not so much. There, I think pay should be in accordance with the risk of your job.

Without a unified voice we will die on the vine. Before our very eyes the City has successfully divided all facets of C.P.D. and is using our greed to destroy years of hard fought gains, that were obtained at great peril . The city is laughing at us over how easy they are getting off with V.R.I. They are using our own greed and shortsightedness to pay for this. Within 5 years we will be working 12 hour days with 2 shifts like a factory and then pushing a Beat Car at 62 and wondering what happened. Now is the time to fight.

Once upon a time, in a land far, far away, there was a Chicago Police Dept. budget. The budget handled vehicle expenses, benefits, salaries and funding for supplies to make the department run. Monies went into that budget from tickets written and paid for by the citizens the court fined. And, at the end of the budget year, the SURPLUS from the Chicago Police Dept. budget went to the City of Chicago General Fund. The greedy ogre, Prince Richie, became enraged that he could not use that money for his own purposes like flying to Ireland to hide it in his pot of gold at the end of the rainbow..... So, he found a way to include the Chicago Police Dept. budget as part of the city and not funded on its own. And the rest of the story becomes very sad, as the greedy leprechaun sucked every last pence and more, leaving the CPD barren and without the means to do their job.

What difference does it make? It passed 45-5.
Happens all the time , the aldermen of the wards that are populated by alot of police and fire, always put in their token vote and the budget goes thru. The mayor understands that

He voted for it according to the NBC Chicago website. Just like he votes for everything else Rahm tells him to. CPD is short, 022 needs coppers, other districts need coppers and there's no money to hire them. But hey Matt, there's 10 or 20 million to build a skating rink right? Without a parking lot, so fuck the neighbors. He's a puppet.

Hey, lazy fuck reporters..here's some facts: in order to have a base over 100g, you have to be a Sgt or above. And the sgt has to have over 25 years. The highest paid patrolman makes 93,700. After 30 years. I would guess that pay grades under that line, when benefits are included are compensated over 100k, but joe citizen doesn't think that way. Mr citizen sees the 100k figure and makes the assumption that that is salary only.

Maybe, just maybe one of you hard charging reporters could put these figures in the paper. Better yet, here's the link to our salary schedule:

Some of these assinine posts that either the Douherty or the Angelo Team posts are more than I can take.No matter what the thread, I have to read Bill Dougherty post about us not getting our Retro-pay, pay for a term the arbitrator has not even given us. What if that arbitrator gives us what the city proposes, 0%, 0% and 5% over three years. That adds up to NO Retro-pay too Bloody Bill, but I know that somehow you will spin that into being Shield's fault. Just like Obama blames everything on Bush. Bill we are tired of your same posts, either get a new issue or better yet drop out of the race, your toast anyway after that Vet thing. As far as the other posts blaming Shields and Donahue for the Pension "reform" bill they are passing in Springfield, what did you think they could do to stop this bill besides what they are doing. You on the Angelo team need to stop this BS too you are showing your
utter lack of knowledge about politics and displaying to people why you too should not be elected.

A detective with 25 years on makes $93,192 per year. All officers make $1,800 per year in uniform allowance but of course must buy and maintain their own uniforms which are marked up 10,000%. They also make $3,220 per year in duty availability. So a detective with 25 years on makes $98,212 per year not counting overtime. $100,000 per year after 4 years... If you add to your salary the cost to the city of their pension contribution, which is approximately twice your contribution and also add the average cost of hospital expenses paid by the city on your behalf, yes they do self-insure, but they do pay for the expenses, I suspect that it comes to well over 100,000 for salaries around 75,000 or so. It is a correct average figure. Whether or not it is enough, is another question that is answered through negotiation.

Of course he will still be forced to pay into the pension. Thats the way its been and will continue to be. Even under our current pension that is the case. After 29and a day you are maxed out but continue to pay into the pension. Only makes sense because every year you stay your pension goes up with raises. Only way your idea is right is after 29 and a day your pension is frozen at that amount and you get no credit for any of the additional years you work

I have some questions for Bill. What did you and Donahue get for turning down a 16% raise and then take 10%. Even if you could convince us it was something good why did we not get to make that choice. Why did you, Mark and Aguilar have secret negotiations with the city apart from the core group and keep them secret? Loyalty to our members is not your strong suit is it Bill.

I am looking at the magnet from your last campaign with Greg Bella. There are at least 6 people not running with you this time. Three are now on Angelo's ticket and at least three on Shields ticket. Why are they jumping off of your ticket? Why are they not loyal too you?

If Shields is soooo... bad why did you ask to run with him this summer? If Mike would add Jim Bailey to the five field reps and throw out Frank Di Maria you would run with Mike? Loyalty is not your strong suit is it Bill?

Why did you stop working mid conversation with the vets and try to strong arm him not to endorse Dean Angelo Sr. Loyalty is not you strong suit is it Bill?

    **************************************

I also was at that meeting sitting in the back and the vote was 598-2. The 2 votes were Steve Robbins and some Dic Joe Gentile who was sitting next to Steve. Jim Moriarty should have killed at committee. The state lodge said it was said it was illegal but JM still let it go for a vote. The National Lodge said the motion was illegal and it still went to the floor for a vote. The National Board has a retiree on it. If Bill Dougherty did not speak against it he would have been lynched.

But Bill Dougherty, Mark Donahue, and John Capparelli all talked at several meetings four and five years ago about getting the retirees out of the union because of how much per capita the retiree cost us. Just look at what just happened to the Park District retirees. They do not get to vote in elections.

Just remember retirees is that Steve Robbins is Mark Donahue’s neighbor and hand picked candidate for the pension board. They wanted to take away your voting rights. That group already tried to screw you. First time shame on them and if it happens again shame on you. DO NO VOTE for anyone associated with Bill Dougherty if you are a retiree.

Any Retiree who votes for any of the Citywide team deserves what happens to them.

Agree 100%. The problem is, every copper works and thinks about tomorrow, not 10 or 20 years down the road. They would rather whore themselves out for some petty ass money now(to buy a harley) and bitch about it when they have to work for 40 years. Its typical. We will reap what these assholes sew, unfortunately

Who started the rumor that minimum retirement age will be 63? They're not gonna raise the minimum age 13 years. You guys are a bunch of fear mongers.

No. Minimum age for retirement, if Rahm gets his way, will be raised to 55. He wants the MAX retirement age to go up to 67.

As of Jan 1, 2011 the retirement age was already raised to 55 for new hires after that date. It covered under SB3538

To 12:41 PM nice to hear from you Bill but are you really going to take credit for the new work schedule and the 55 health care? Let's talk about the number of cops who were disabled and you didn't go to bat for. As far as Mike goes we are better of when he is not at the office. At least he can't screw us.

Kevin Graham, reporter for the Scum-Times, called in again to the paper. The word is they requested a FOIA at the Pension Board on Dean Angelo. They were told no dice. They refiled and asked not for the content of the file but only if their were any hearings that Dean Angelo requested to the Disability or did he ever request to come off of Disability. That request is still under review but should also turned down.

Nice job Bill of getting Carlos Cortez and Kevin Graham to do your and Mark Donahue's dirty work.

Bill ( thank a vet ) Daugherty and his puppet master Donahue, have always been against retirees. Ask Steve Robbins. He'll tell you.

Any Retiree who votes for any of the Citywide team deserves what happens to them.

AND, anyone who votes for the Angelo team is a fool too.

Do your homework on Dean Angelo before you vote

He will be far worse for the FOP than Shields ever was.

    Trust me.

I'm a retiree and haven't received a ballet to vote since I retired? I pay the required dues and didn't know we could vote!
