Connections Connections

  • Mayor Rahm Emanuel on Friday appointed a Chicago hedge fund executive as the city's new comptroller to replace a former aide who faces federal corruption charges in Ohio.

Emanuel selected Daniel Widawsky, a managing director at Citadel LLC, to succeed Amer Ahmad in the cabinet-level position that oversees the city's collection and disbursement of funds and the Department of Finance. If approved by the City Council, Widawsky would start at City Hall on Jan. 31.
And why would Rahm choose this guy?
  • Widawsky, 48, has donated $9,000 to Emanuel's campaign fund: $4,000 in February 2011 during the mayoral campaign and another $5,000 in September. For both contributions, he identified himself as a tax attorney.

Widawsky also has been an active contributor to federal campaigns, giving $7,500 to Republican Mitt Romney's presidential effort and $4,800 to Republican U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk. Since 2003, Widawsky has given $28,200 to federal campaigns: $10,850 to Democrats, $15,050 to Republicans and $2,300 to political action committees.
So this guy leaves a private company for a civil service job? How noble. Unless you suspect Rahm is going to try to phase out pensions and move retirement monies into something like a retirement account? After all, Citadel LLC CEO Ken Griffin, Widawsky's now-former-boss, now has one of his guys working directly for Rahm:
  • Widawsky could not be reached for comment Friday. His current boss, Citadel founder Kenneth Griffin, has been one of Emanuel's largest campaign contributors. Griffin and his wife, Anne Dias Griffin, have contributed more than $200,000 to Emanuel's fund.
  • Citadel LLC founder and CEO Ken Griffin criticized the Madigan proposal, which includes:
  • raising state workers’ retirement age on a sliding scale
  • setting up a state funding guarantee
  • introducing a 401(k) option
  • reducing the employee contribution.
  • limiting annual cost of living increases to reflect annuity payments, based on length of employment
  • providing authorization for unions to sue the state if the full amount required for pensions is not paid each year
  • Griffin writes the deal will ultimately force the state of Illinois to break its promises to government workers. He says there's no way Illinois will be able to provide the pension security it says it will...
And everyone is connected to Rauner, Republican candidate for governor. Curiouser and curiouser.

rep. or dem. makes no difference which party they represent, they are the same, the corporate party in most cases.

the corporations are where the campaign contributions come from and no matter what noble b.s. 'for the children ' propaganda is pumped out the money will corrupt them -- and you cater to the ones that brought you to the dance.

the party first crap the voters are suckered into is nothing more than a game of good cop / bad cop with each side taking their turn

divide and conquer. endless banter over your party did this therefore
it's okay for my party to do that.

your side's worse. no, yours is..etc.

bush was going to do this and that but if doesn't fit the corporate lobbyist agenda even with control of the house and senate it's doesn't get done. later the reason given is that the other party wouldn't let them.

and it's the exact same thing on the other side with obama and his lies.

funny tho, how if a corporate lobbyist wants something, bam, fuck congress, the bill of rights and the sworn oaths...here's your executive order.

meanwhile. the gov't runs guns to the drug cartels in mexico, the gov't funds al-queda in syria, ignores it's own laws on illegal immigration, ignores new laws like obamacare, picks and chooses at will, collects legally owned firearms telling people 'it's policy'

but the fear if good. fear is a powerful motivator. when our leaders fund the terrorist the crisis created can be used to grab more power, increase the police state. take away more freedoms.

does anyone think that it's just a simple matter of voting for the other party next time around.

while the corps are bailed out and tax break'd to higher levels of greed the pensions and social security are being busted out. the clouted ones get sweetheart deals.

I'm a little confused....

We criticize Madigan's iron grip on this state and then worry when a highly successful businessman, albeit who has heavy ties to Rahm, criticizes the Madigan plan, which isn't a horrible plan but not a great one either and realistically just pushes the problem forward until the state declares bankruptcy.

The majority of people on this site have at the very least Republican leanings, myself included, although the Republicans are not pro labor.

The democrats, including Rahm, are becoming very anti-labor. Rahm is linked to the Republican candidate for Governor, Rauner. Rauner doesn't seem like he is going to be our greatest ally. For the record I can't stand Quinn.

The politics in this state are very inscestual. Who do you pick? Who do you back? Its like picking a life raft with the fewest amount of holes.

The only possible bright side on this that I can see is at least the city is rid of the guy that was under investigation in Ohio and now has a guy from a highly successful firm that is presumably not part of the Daley clan.

I think the ideal situation would be to have laws in place that protect us, but at the same time have people in place that know how to invest so the city doen't go bankrupt and default on our pensions.

when bush took over the reigns from clinton republicans had a long laundry list of things they did not like over the prior years. but when they had control of the house, senate and executive branch did they overturn or reverse the things that they had complained about -- hell no.

and it works both ways.

the same can be said for obama, the dem's, the libs, when obama took the reigns from bush.

the overwhelming majority of voters didn't want the banker bailouts and they got rammed down our throats anyway. many didn't want the automaker bailouts.

straw man arguments and stalking horses. washington is theater.

reps and dems are on the corporate side not ours.

adm is cheering the pension theft for example.

not to mention the engineered illinois bond rate cut to create a crisis that could be used for pension cuts.

man that story kinda just disappears off the map didn't it -- what was the name of the club of corporate exec's beating up the rating agencies to lower il. debt rating again..

anyways, get the taxpayers bickering, divide them on race, religion, guns, gays. piddly ass shit. those have been the talking points for how many years now when the economy should of been the main issue at hand. distractions. the economy effects all of us not just some special interest groups.

currently is al-queda the greatest threat to america or is it perhaps the radioactive waste pit fukushima that has been ongoing for over two years now.

maybe you haven't read it yet but they just recorded the highest level of radiation, 25 siverts per hour leaking from a duct there and that makes it lethal after 20 min. of exposure.

imagine if you will if japan has to be evacuated.

is it any wonder that japan just passed an emergency hitler-like secrecy bill to muzzle the press.

then imagine if the entire northern hemisphere needs to be evac'd because three molten cores start spewing radiation into the jet stream. i don't expect our neighbors south of the equator would be too happy with our invasion.

i'd scratch pacific seafood off the menu.

but no. we have politicians patting themselves on the back taking photo-ops of first gay marriages and praising the death of mandela trying to make him a saint like maggie daley.

people need to ask if mandela was so great why did the us cia get him jailed for 25 years. is that how long it took to break him and re-educate him. seriously. that media ain't gonna talk about that. you have to look it up yourself and most don't care or don't have the time to do it.

i'm done. sorry for rambling.

Growing up in, or living in Chicago and IL naturally makes one...uh...'skeptical'...about almost everything concerning government. That is except for the low information voters and the catered too constituency who don't give a rat's ass about anything as long as 'it' keeps coming for *Free*.

However, one thing I've learned first hand from being on the business side, aka Private Sector, my whole life is; It ain't always what it appears to be what it appears to be (it may look & quack like a Duck, but it's not a Duck. And that 'it' can be, be someone "connected" to Rahm or any Pol from Chi, and/or IL. Of either political stripe, in this case Bruce Rauner. That's because Illinois has made doing business here, a dirty business in itself, that is if you want your business to stay in business.

It's not graft, bribery, or anything 'illegal', nope, that'd be too blatant . It's just smart 'donating' -- even if you're donating to someone who you loathe, and personally loathe that persons politics. And I've seen this first hand. Conservative businessmen donating to Democrats they despise, but they better donate, or get out the Going Out of Business Sign. Because pretty soon the 'G' is going to unleash a ton of whoop-ass on you.

And It Sucks! But that's the way it is, and 'always' has been; As Alderman Mathias "Paddy" Bauler, said eons ago about Chicago (fill in IL too); 'Chicago ain't ready for reform'. I think that was in 1842.

Bottom line, you can't rise up and 'make it' in Chi, Cook, or IL, without rubbing your elbows with pure scum along the way. You just have to make sure you can still scrub that scum off each night.

BTW, I miss the good old days when, 'Being Connected', meant something entirely different; pssst, don't mess with him, he's 'connected'. Those were fun days -- well...not for some, though at least car trunks were roomy then (joke).

It is called mathematics. Most of these pension funds assume 8% or so annual return. Not going to happen. Market up huge this year, but how much as the S&P returned annually for the last 10-11 years? Add the type of investments some funds make ( Vaneko) and thinking you can get 8% annually--pipe dream. Many pension funds up 12-15% this year and still losing capital.
As for the state law concerning Chicago having to put 600 million in the funds in 2015, not going to happen. New law will override it, some judge will throw it out or some such thing.

Enough bitching about McCarthy. He's better than his predecessor...and he is the real police. And in addition to be a decent leader, he thankfully has a policeman's sense of humor. We could do a LOT worse...even from among our own ranks.

12/07/2013 07:20:00 AM

I hope this was a lame excuse for humor. At best he is on par with his predecessor, but I believe he is worse. Here is why:

He is a habitual drunkard and womanizer and he brags about both. That alone should preclude him from being the top cop. He brings discredit to the Department every day he is in charge.

His an egomaniacal stooge. He never met a camera he didn't like and brings his own Media circus with him. Only Lady Gaga is more in love with herself and I don't think she is as big a self promoter.

He is obsessed not with law enforcement, but with the single thought of bringing down the homicide rate. The vast majority of homicides are gang bangers killing each other. So in effect we are keeping the problem alive. Nothing else matters to Mr. McCarthy though. Strip the tax paying neighborhoods of any police force, their crime doesn't matter.

He is the Mayor's puppet with all this nonsense about crime dropping all the time. There are less officers to take the reports. THAT is the single biggest reason for REPORTED crime going down. Ask yourself if you feel safer walking out your door every day.

Don't tell me this guy is good for Chicago. He is all about himself and promoting his COMPSTAT dogma. He knows it all and with the exception of the two New York guys he brought in, he takes no advice from anyone in the Department.

It was unheard for an exempt to bad mouth a Superintendent a few years ago, and that included Mr Weis. Now, a majority of the exempts openly bad mouth Mr McCarthy, and with good reason. You will never hear an exempt defend him.

Now you tell me, is this self promoting carpetbagger good for the Department or this City?

Dirty money disguised as campaign contributions greased the skids and paved the way for public funds to authorized, appropriated and dispersed according to the wishes ofthe ruling class in city hall and also Springfield. Ethics. What a fucking joke. No apparent improprieties noted nor any smoke filled backroom corporate deals here. No further investigation is needed to vet the keeper of the working class booty. In 1998 after leaving the Clinton White house Rahm Emmanuel was approached by Bruce Rauner the Chairman for GTCR Golder Rauner a private equity company. Rauner approached Rahm and advised him to use his White house connections and become an investment banker. Rahm has no investment banker credentials or backgroud.

Rahm wanted to make alot of quick money to give his family security before he went back to the low paying public sector job. Rahm was hired by the bank Wasserstein and Perella Co. as a managing director, RELATIONSHIP MANAGER.

Rahm would use his White House connections to create mergers. Rahm brought together the merger of Chicago Unicom and Philadelphia Peco to create Excelon where Obama advisor David Axlerod would soon work.

Rahm also oversaw the GTCR Golder Rauner ( Bruce Rauners company) purchase of SecurityLink from SBC Ameritech. William Daley was firm President of SBC at the time. Both deals were extremely lucarative.

When wasserstein was sold to a German co. Rahm received an unusually high payout.

Rahms reported income tax return:
1999- 900,000

Ya know, It's been snowing for the past few hours. No, not a lot, but there's snow on the ground nonetheless. I haven't seen one snowplow yet!

The other night, when it was 51 degrees, there were City Snowplows all over downtown, but when we need them... nothing.

Just a casual observation.

The Sunday Trib editorial and the comments posted thereafter show the hatred and disdain the public has for first responders...

"Next for pension reform: Chicago"
TRANSLATION: So what if the previous and current mayors and City Councils made an intention series of decisions to not only fail to fully fund Police pensions, but to repeatedly raid the Police Pension fund as if it were their own private piggy bank.

EXAMPLES:

Chicago Jeopardy Question #1
"Who WAS Miriam Santos?"

Chicago Jeopardy Question #2
"Who were the principals of Davis-Vanecko Realty?"

Chicago Jeopardy Question #3
"Whose was the hidden hand that approved the granting of multiple millions of muni employee pension money obstensibly for investure in an already tanking real estate market by the principals of Davis-Vanecko Realty?

As we see it... Our pension fund is very likely part of the largest financial crime scene in the 6000 year history of municipal governance.

Period.

The criminal political & media cabal and their neo-corporatist masters in the Gold Coast/North Shore fundraiser and phony charity money laundering cocktail party circuit, are all in to destroy the crime scene, i.e. our pension funds.

The Police didn't break it and it's WAAYY beyond The Police to fix.

THIS... Is what made our blood boil:

"One among many areas that ought to change: It makes no sense, with the average U.S. life expectancy of 78 years, to continue allowing police and fire personnel to retire and draw benefits at 50."

Apples and oranges comparison to gin up MORE anti-Police resentment.

This is a patently false, holey and intellectually lazy premise.

Policing by it's very nature is unlike anything the "average" U.S. citizen is likely to encounter... Let alone endure for 20 to 40+ years.

Policing is one of THE most studied and researched oareers in existence and the Tribune is rather blithely dismissive of the actuarial studies done over the last 50 years.

The mayor's office has quashed release of all manner of actuarial studies regarding Police Officer longevity/mortality...

Policemen give up 10 to 15 years compared to their age peers in the real world but everybody is so outraged about "early retirement and sweet pensions."

The "average" Policemen are usually walking wounded by the time they opt to retire.

Hey! Tribune editorial board!

Why don't you guys sacrifice one of your children or grandchildren to being a Chicago Cop?

No less than 20 years...
All on the west and/or south sides.

>Snicker!<
Get back to us after 20 years and tell us how you feel.

We've been seeing a lot of this comment lately... "We're so sick and tired of all this adulation being given to Cops!"

We don't ask for or actively seek adulation!

People who spout smug, ignorant and silly shit like this need to be left to fend for themselves since the very notion of Police/Policing is such an affront to them.

Would everyone rather that no one be willing to step up and give honorable service as a proud member of the Thin Blue Line?

"You guys have cush benefits..."
Oh shut up already!

You joyful haters did PLENTY of shit-talking to Policemen when times were good...

"You dumb Cops chasing bad guys for $40K and a pittance pension while we clear $100K and have a half-million in our 401K..."

25 years later and all of a sudden, "Why should those dumb greedy Cops have anything while we had to eat our 401K's? Take their pensions away and make them work until 70 so they can be just like us!"

People are genuinely looking forward to seeing 70 year old men rolling around on the ground with "Yung-Buk?"

Everything the Tribune proposes is nothing but politically orchestrated "who had said somthin'?" direct from City Hall.

"Never let the truth get in the way of a good story."

RANT: On/(OFF)

12/08/2013 01:13:00 PM

ABSOLUTELY spot on correct! He is hated by all ranks even more than Weis was by far. His contempt for the CPD and its members is obvious. Most importantly, he does not have the leadership ability nor the managerial skills to run this police department. It is very difficult to imagine how the CPD can be repaired after after these two back to back administrations. When will this experiment of bringing in under qualified outsiders come to an end?

2000- 1.4 million
2001- 6.5 million
Upon leaving Wasserstein Rahm would collect 9.7 million in DEFERRED COMPENSATION from the firm. During Rahms 2 1/2 years he would have ranked in the top 5% of all investment bankers. Not bad for a guy with no investment credentials. Thanks Bruce

Average return of the S&P for the last 10 years is 7.65 % but the pension fund depends on a steady cash flow to pay the retirees. The day the S&P hit 666 in march of 09- if the fund needed money for the retiree payouts-- much bigger percentage of the investment would have been taken out to make this payout. The low interest rates have hurt the pension funds ability to manage their payouts. They then depended on the derivative markets in 08 and 09 and got their head handed to them.

Like that has never been tried before. Below is just one (1970) of a number of such lawsuits. Nothing new here under the sun. The courts have always upheld the City's position so unless someone can come up with a new and novel legal argument, this issue has been resolved. We lost many times.

Billions sounds like a lot but it is short by more billions.

The police pension fund pays out approx. $250 million a year. There is a little more than 12 years worth of money in the fund right now.

$3.1 billion divided by $250 million equals a bit more than 12. Assets are being sold and used to pay retirees. Not good.
