Endorsement Batting Average = Piss Poor

We decided to do a little investigation last night. We dug up a copy of the FOP 2012 Endorsements for the Illinois Senate and House and compared it to the way that those people voted for the recent Pension Bill. We saved the file in case anyone over at FOP decides to take down the web page. The results we educational to say the least:

(click on the image for a larger view)

We drew a line between the Senate and House endorsements and hi-lighted the people voting "yes." We lined out those who either lost the election or have since left Springfield for the greener pastures of aldrecreature or lobbyist.
  • The Senate members endorsed by FOP were 7 out of 7 voting for the bill
  • The House members endorsed by FOP were 14 out of 18 voting for the bill
Now we realize that the pension bill in Springfield doesn't affect Chicago's woes. It is going to be used by Rahm as a road map to gut (aka "reform") our pensions at some point, and some of these politicians might have voted as they did knowing that they don't have to face downstate voters - the Machine will keep them relatively safe.

But as we had a presence at the vote this past week, and the FOP is supporting the We Are One organization, and the FOP made it known that this bill wasn't in the best interests of future issues that will directly impact CPD along with other workers, it's disappointing that our organization would endorse people so out of touch with what we determine to be in our best interests.

21-out-of-25, a full 84%, voted in favor of a bill that we made no bones about being against. That either points to:
  1. a complete disconnect of those running with our endorsement;
  2. a catastrophic failure of our Political Action Committee to endorse qualified candidates to vote for the interests of the FOP.
Either scenario needs to be addressed somehow.

Speaking of the list of endorsements, the Sergeant's list is coming out this Friday. I work at Headquarters and I overheard the top brass discussing the final list of Sergeants from the old list. Congratulations to those who made it; you will not have to take part two of the test.

The endorsement were all made by Mark and Bill. Bill are you in need of the extra $1,400 you are getting? Have some dignity and respect for yourself and the membership. Donahue at $75,000 a year plus his pension = approx. $150,000 a year of our union dues.

Throw them all out. Look at the FOP Book inside cover to throw them out.

No one should be endorsed...they should all work for it. One chance, after that they are out if no good. That's it. Americans are too soft, we believe too much and are easily led. Unions point a finger, pick an anointed one and we follow. How dumb...to let others call our vote. They not only call our vote but they know we will oblige. Yuck on us.

The FOP can either deny ever endorsing these candidates and claim Bill Dougherty hacked the web site or else the Board can claim they meant to say they did NOT endorse them and some secretary, now fired, made a mistake.

If that doesn't work, the FOP Board can vote to un-endorse the candidates.

CPD pensions are modest compared to other police pensions.

For those born after 1955 who do not receive the 3% COLA, they have no inflation protection and retiree buying power will erode during their most vulnerable years.

The problem is not overly generous benefits but inadequate funding.

I'd like to see the public response to a proposal to strip the COLA from Social Security.

Whatever damage is done by those currently in the House and Senate CANNOT be stopped or undone. (Madigan indicated months ago that the state Supreme court was already swayed.) But God help all of us if there are not sincere efforts to unseat each and every one of those that cast a vote to diminish the pension of a union member. Pretty sure we will see ballots cast "differently" when city pensions come up for a vote. Results, however, will be the same.

People who must be target for defeat in the upcoming elections are RAHM, CULLERTON and MADIGAN. Beating these three would be like cutting off the head of a poisonous snake. I can only hope that the unions stick together and support candidates who oppose those three evil Democrats. I am retired and live out of state, but I would come back to work against those three jagoffs.

If the city goes bankrupt we can lose our pensions completely. The Tribune editorial today about Detroit's pensions is definitely an eye opener. It now becomes a big game of "chicken" between the unions and Rahm, with Rahm holding the "bankruptcy" card. The final option will be reduced benefits or no pension at all.

Heard recently that a bill is stuck in house committee which would allow Shields to collect his salary as FOP President once he would retire. If this is true then there is no arguing that Mike Shields only cares about himself and himself alone. I am disgusted. Mike Shields receiving his FOP presidential salary once he retires is outrageous. He is has used his office to line his own pockets and waste all of our hard owned Money. We as members of FOP should not be made to look like fools and need to vote in this next election to get him out. If this Shields has the balls to come to my roll call asking me to vote for him I will walk out of roll call and so will my the others on the Watch. Mike, I have no clue how you can walk into these roll calls because people are livid with your actions and and ineptness. You have sabotaged our Union. I honestly can not believe that you have not been removed from office. You lied to everyones face that you got the Union paper work in to receive retro. You lied Shields. Hey SCC!

If exposing "certain others" as knee-walking incompetents and traitors who have failed in their duty to put the interests of the membership first doesn't work...

"HEY C'MON! WHY ARE YOU GUYS SO PISSED AT US? Look guys... Be reasonable. You know how it is, right?" >Wink!<

Just like bad bosses caught "en flagrante," these quislings will wave the flag of peace, mercy and understanding...

Kind of like those who swing the gates of the fort open under cover of dark to let the enemy in because of promises made and inferred...

Ironic that after the dust settles, the attack is beaten back and the gates of the fort are again secured, they always plead for peace, mercy and understanding while being poked from under their beds at bayonet point.

What were the rewards for betraying the membership?

Is the whole of FOP hierarchy compromised?

What is up with the failure to aggressively pursue the interests of the membership on all things?

The city is aggressive in promoting everything that is against the interests of the people who constitute the "Thin Blue Line."

The real irony we observe is that all who follow this KNOW there are no mystery "hundreds of thousands of people" lining up to take this shit doo-doo job. Contrary to what the "joyful haters" smugly post at every opportunity.

Everybody that has eyes and ears KNOWS this job has been turned to shit and not by The Policeman's hand either.

Whither thus?

From The Reader by Ben Joravsky:

"Just in case, my advice to the police and the firefighters is to counterpunch.

For instance, I'd like to see a big demonstration of cops and firefighters at the corner of Michigan and Cermak, where the mayor's gearing up to waste at least $92 million in TIF dollars on a basketball arena for DePaul and a hotel for Marriott.

C'mon, fellers: if the teachers can fight back, so can you."

Most of the Chicago Reps and Senators who voted for State pension reform will not vote to give Rahm a win here in Chicago. That being said WE have to start becoming a political force. That means we get off of our asses and start getting out and going door to door.

The 19th ward had a 75% turnout last election. We have to get that kind of turnout in an additional 5 or 6 wards. I'm pissed that many of endorsed people voted for this but when we give political donations its for future votes. If the vote against us and with Rahm then WE have to go our and field our own candidates. Donahue and Dougherty have to live with Hurley she was their handpicked candidate.

Political 'Monkey Business'

If you start with a cage containing five monkeys and inside the cage, hang a banana on a string from the top and then you place a set of stairs under the banana, before long a monkey will go to the stairs and climb toward the banana.
As soon as he touches the stairs, you spray all the other monkeys with cold water.
After a while another monkey makes an attempt with the same result... all the other monkeys are sprayed with cold water. Pretty soon when another monkey tries to climb the stairs, the other monkeys will try to prevent it.
Now, put the cold water away.
Remove one monkey from the cage and replace it with a new one.
The new monkey sees the banana and attempts to climb the stairs. To his shock, all of the other monkeys beat the crap out of him.
After another attempt and attack, he knows that if he tries to climb the stairs he will be assaulted.
Next, remove another of the original five monkeys, replacing it with a new one.
The newcomer goes to the stairs and is attacked. The previous newcomer takes part in the punishment, with enthusiasm, because he is now part of the "team".
Then, replace a third original monkey with a new one, followed by the fourth, then the fifth. Every time the newest monkey takes to the stairs, he is attacked.
Now, the monkeys that are beating him up have no idea why they were not permitted to climb the stairs. Neither do they know why they are participating in the beating of the newest monkey.
Finally, having replaced all of the original monkeys, none of the remaining monkeys will have ever been sprayed with cold water.
Nevertheless, not one of the monkeys will try to climb the stairway for the banana.
Why, you ask? Because in their minds...that is the way it has
always been!
This, my friends, is how U.S. Congress and the Illinois House and Senate operates... and this is why, from time to time...

ALL of the monkeys need to be REPLACED AT THE SAME TIME.

You're Welcome

There is little or no support by the public for public sector pensions. Both sides must compromise or someday there will be no pensions , and that someday is not far off. I mean absolutely zero disrepect for posting this - love our public servants - but I just don't get it.

1) Where has your union leadership been? Why did they allow the city to skip funding the pensions? It was plain as day what was going on - why did your union leadership allow it?

2) Let's not forget that every single contract that has been signed the last 25 years has had DEMANDS for higher pay, higher perks, etc. How did the city fund this? By cutting pension contributions. It was a tit-for-tat that your own union leaders (elected by the rank!) accepted.

3) Once the city's pension contribution went to zero, the only way to fund the DEMANDS for higher pay and perks was to cave in, but to offset these higher costs by cutting the workforce, raising taxes, red light cameras, speed cameras, soda taxes, parking taxes, etc, etc, etc which...

4) led to fewer boots on the ground, higher crime, and eventual cries from the ranks that "we're undermanned!"

As this average citizen sees it, your own union leadership - elected by you - negotiated your way right into this shitty situation with the "wink-wink" that the boys in Springfield would step in and take care of you if you just voted for them. Now they are sticking a knife in your back because THE PARTY IS OVER. They got what they wanted (YOUR votes = their political careers).

On top of this Obama's own FEDERAL RESERVE has all but guaranteed that pensions are they are today have ZERO hope for ever being solvent since they have committed to zero rates for years to come. How do you fund a pension that assumes 7%+ returns a year when 30 year US bonds yield under 4%? YOU DON'T.

So time to stop folding arms and screaming "don't touch my pension" because the next step will be to have a court-forced pension cram-down when Chicago declares bankrputcy.

To all of CPD, both retired and sworn:

Mike Shields no doubt is on the side of Mayor Rahm Emaunel . I can not stress that enough. We are all cop's either currently or retired and we need to wake up. Mike Shields did not just "forget" to put the proper paper work in on time for a retro check. Mike Shields literally saved the City by his own actions 10's of million's of dollars. Mike did this all on propose. Do not for one second believe him when he said he forgot. Trust your gut Officers. We are not foolish and he thinks the FOP membership are all fool's. Mr. Shields is a total fraud and his word means nothing. He saved the city serious amounts of Money. Ask yourself after reading this post, Do you think he just forgot to get that letter in on time? Officers we are talking about saving the city millions. He did the Mayor a huge huge favor. It will never go unnoticed by the Mayor. If Mike does not get re elected just watch where he goes. It will not be to a beat car. He will land well. How do you just forget? Below are some other links to make you look at just to make you all think about this. Where there is smoke there is Fire. Shields slamming the Mayor in the media is all a distraction and we need to not believe any of it at.

Knock it off with the scare tactics. Chicago isn't about to declare bankruptcy. Rahm wouldn't cut himself off at the knees like that. As long as there is TIF money, as long as there is 490million available to spruce up the Blue Line, Chicago isn't going bankrupt.
Real estate has turned around, which means more tax income and more TRANSFER tax income (which the City lives and dies on). Money is flowing again. The market is repeatedly hitting 'all time highs'.
Rahm is just trying to terrify the good citizens into backing his schemes to break our pensions and our unions. Guaranteed, once he does it, the casinos will come into Chicago and all that cash that could have saved our pension will go into a whole bunch of silk-lined pockets, as they laugh at us during their cocktail parties on the penthouse levels of Chicago.

I look forward to the day when a real boss takes over CPD and knocks them back to 1990 para-military uniform standards and everybody looks like professional police officer. 80/20's, round crown hat with proper hair cut/style standards, clean shaven, and if you have more than a mustache on your face you better have a "bump card" in your pocket. The city would save millions of dollars handing out, out of uniform suspensions on a daily basis.

I have no respect for a sloppy, dirty, unshaven, "wear whatever I want " police officer. The uniforms and bad boy/girl looks are what make you the laughing stock of policing.

Too bad Bratton went back to NYPD, I would have loved to have him as CPD superintendent. Under Bratton you would have had a chance a becoming a real police department. Now you're stuck with McCarthy and this new modern day "I don't give a fuck" police department where dreadlocks, goatees, beards and dirty uniforms are the norm as long as you bring in contact cards.

CPD was once the model for policing, now it's the biggest joke of policing.

Good luck CPD. I once respected you, now I just laugh at you.

To 3:33

Sir you are an imbecile.
1. First when I took this job I took a pay cut. Everyone I trained at my last job was making a 6 figure income in the early 2000's when i was mas making in the 70's. Yes it was my choice and today they make what i make but are increasing there pay every day. They told me I was stupid to take the CPD job.
2. Pay increases. You imbecile.. Look at our pay raises compared to the average pay raise in the city of Chicago. You will see that we are below the AVERAGE RAISE.
3. You imbecile... Yes we all paid higher taxes. Including the police that are forced to live in this shit hole. But guess what, you imbecile the taxes DID NOT GO INTO THE PENSIONS. Cpd, Cfd were paid to the minimum, Daley paid Zero into the teachers fund for 10 years. But guess what... He took money out. The criminal Vaneko family stole 47 million from our pensions.
4. Fewer boots on the ground. My ass you imbecile. Daley and Rham compare us to L.A and NY. NY has 0ver 25 thousand, police, they have a seperate transit police, Port Authority Police, Airport police dept. . LA has a police dept of around 10 thousand, Airport police dept and a Sheriff Dept of around 7 thousand. The Sheriff police patrol LA. CPD covers everything. City, airport, mass transit and the water ways.

Facts...
1. The city has 2 billion in Tif funds.
2. Every year the city replenishes the TIF funds between 4-6 million.
3. The city has allocated 1.5 Billion of the TIF funds to nonsense projects. Maggie park, bike lanes, river walks Miegs field, giving companies milllions to build skyscapers( look at Wolf point on the river}, canoe boat houses, Mal. X college and on and on.
4. CPD does not get compounded interest. Cpd born before 1955 gets 1.5 simple interest.
5. All of the politicians stole pension money.Daley, Madigan, Culerton to enrich themselves and friends company's.
6.Rauner who wants all unions in a 401K made his millions by investing pension funds and 401k's. So guess which investment firms will get the new 401k money. HMMMMM maybe Rauner's buddies.
Elect me mayor and tommorow we will no longer be in debt.
2Billion in TIF funds
1. Stop all TIF construction projects.
2. Pay off the 350 million dollar budget debt. BUDGET BALANCED
3. Pay the 600 million that is owed the pension funds. PENSIONS SECURED
3. Use remaining 1 Billion for needed projects and keep at least 500 million in reserves.

WOW THAT WAS HARD

So u sir you are an imbecile. I will never vote republican(RICH) for they want to take my pension. I will never vote Democrat(ENRICH THEMSELVES and POOR) because they stole my pension.
We need a middle class party now or else the whole middle class is doomed.

It would have been asinine to pursue that cola upgrade, considering the economic climate. Even at the retirement seminars, they talked about how it would only be pursued AFTER the economy turned around because the politicians couldn't excuse bringing it to a vote before then.

stop with the "para-military" standards of the old days nonsense.

I grew up looking at cops who looked like crap along side the cops who tried presenting themselves with authority.

That's not the entirety or the make or break of what commands respect.

We could all look like goose steppers out of some fascist nightmare but as long as the lawyers, politicians and bleeding hearts have us muzzled and whispering 'namaste' to gangbangers under threat of separation for some hidden video that shows us not reciting poetry and making sure to give out footrubs, thugs will continue to shoot each other over 2 dollar dice games.

All City and State workers on the Northwest Side.

Remember these Names at Election time,

John Mulroe State Senate and
Michael McAuliffe State Rep.

Vote for the person that runs against them.

They have done good by us in the past, but this Pension Bill Vote wiped that all away.
--------------------
Dude, I'm a total political junkie, and the Indo-Pak Democrat kid running against McAuliff is the worse possible choice for America. That's the way the combine works, McAuliff was insulated on this vote. The city needs to go bankrupt and then the fires and pitchforks will come out. Justice will be dispensed by the mob.

These elected officials are more afraid of Madigan than they are of us. But when Rahm’s bill comes up in January or June they will vote for us. Hurley will not vote against us either if she wants to be re-elected. But she should have never been elected in the first place. We should have gone for the other candidate. And if your think the money we donate to these people worried them your nuts. SIEU gave Quinn 2.5 million last election. He will lose that type of money if he does not do an amendatory veto on the Park District Bill.

Also while everyone was watching Springfield Dougherty’s friends on the board of directors were try to sneak in a bill to continue to give Dougherty D5 pay for three more months. But being cowards they wanted to do it on a secret ballot. When they had to do a roll call vote it failed. He wound up with the same stipend that Sid Davis and John Capparelli get.

All politics are dirty. The people in Springfield and those at the FOP hall are not that different. Do you really want a ruling class running FOP like Springfield? I posted a couple things joking about the old CityWide team trying to have a 1000 year Reich. It was a joke. But the more I think about it seems to be what they want.

So if any of you old times still have your khaki’s from the academy days mail them brown shirts to FOP headquarters C/O Frank DiMaria (aka Sgt. Schultz) as he has nothing to do most days. We especially need a 56 short for Kevin Graham.

Your full of shit. Post the link here to the bill in Springfield.

Rahm only hates Shields a little less than he hates Karen Lewis and a little more than he hates Mary Ann Ahern.

In fact I asked Donahue about getting the Gold Braid salaries out of our pension and he said no dice. The city fought this tooth and nail as it their way to reward their yes men/women. If Mark could not have gotten it done for himself it isn't getting done.

The fact that Donahue is not getting the 3% cola because he was born after 01 Jan 55 shows how ineffectual he is a lobbyist.

To the ads who says that our Union or for that matter local 2 president gets a pension based on their union salary, your lack of knowledge and intelligence makes me sad. Not because I feel sorry for your ignorant ads but because your vote counts the same as mine. That sir tells me there is no justice. I propose that an IS test be required before you can vote and an IQ far above yours be the minimum required to allow anyone to vote.
I just hope to God that Police Officers don't really believe all these posts from the other five or more Presidential wanna be`s. The current President made a mistake in not sending that "letter" but we are going to get any retro pay awarded by the arbitrator , they damage done by all these other Presidential wanna be`s is going to hurt us far more than than any loss of supposed retro pay. Do we have such short memories that we have forgotten the 16% originally offered to us as opposed to the 10% we wound up getting. Now that really was six percent loss of retro pay but I hear no call to get a rope to lynch Dougherty and Donahue for that. Strange silence on that matter on this blog, could it be that all these posts about the non existent loss of retro pay is being posted by the two who lost it and their team.? Think before you vote Ladies and Gentlemen, if Rahm wants Mike Shields out of Office but doesn't seem to mind a Bill Dougherty as President, a guy he can work with like " his friend Jim" from the Sgts. Union, then I want Shields in there, because I sure as he'll hate Rahm a lot more than I am displeased with Shields.

---

Do you have such a short memory that you forget that the 16% was contingent on accepting the entire contract offer from the city? I have tried to find it but cannot, there were some fucked up work rule changes, overall it wasn't worth it, it was a bad offer. People only remember the 16%, not the shit that went along with it. We could not cherry pick only the raise.

The City quickly withdrew that offer as the economy went south.

We got two things that we would NOT have gotten through arbitration alone. That was the age 55 retirement with free health care and the 4 and 2 work schedule change.

That 4 and 2 was worth much more than a 16% raise over however many years it was, 5 or 4.

What the 4 and 2 gave us, again, was 18 extra RDO's a year. That is more than a 16% raise right there. That was Jody Weiss that signed off on that without Daley's knowledge and Daley was reportedly fuming over it.

The lodge was right in turning down the package with the 16%, we did better with the age 55 and new work schedule.

Do we forget so quickly what it was like to work 6 days in a row, every week? Then a day of Special Employment, then one lousy day off. 6 and 2 sucked.

We tried for years to get that next birthdate for the COLA. Then the economy tanked and we were told we could get it but what did we want to give back. Legislature said, no new pension enhancements without corresponding funding. We could get a lot if we want to pay for it throughout our career. No one has mentioned going from 9% to pensions up to 12% or 13%. That was talked about but I haven't heard it lately. Want everyone to get the COLA? Want free healthcare for retirees? We will have to pay for it during our working career.

I was at a retirement seminar and asked Mikey point blank why the FOP endorsed Madigan when he clearly does not care about our interests. Mikey said that if FOP didn't, that Madigan would crush us. So why endorse anyone? Someone at the seminar said that it was not the place to discuss such things.

Really? Really? Short-sighted people, who were more concerned how long it would take their first check to arrive, who could not see the whole picture.

Mikey believes if we don't endorse the candidates who are clearly against us, that we will suffer more of their wrath....clearly, what else could they do to us if we don't endorse them at all?

Exactly what did we get for our endorsement, except for it being stuck to us you know where?

++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The bills past so far do not affect the CPD. Our pension is in a different article in the state constitution. I'll be the 1st one in front of Madigan's face when he tries to do it to us. Remember two years ago he would not carry Rahm’s water in Springfield. Rahm had Tom Cross R-Plainfield do it. Madigan may let Rahm have to carry his own water. Remember in this last redrawing of district lines Madigan has a whole lot of City workers.

How about when we did an audit of the FOP credit cards we found out in that month after you lost the election until we took over that you took you family out on our credit card and had to pay back the lodge $1600.00 for dinner?

Did you ever try to come off of Disability Dean? Free medical and NO taxes? Right Dean?

Flash mobs do not rule the lodge. Past presidents John Dineen and Bill Nolan both say Shields has the ability to remove a field rep just as every president has done including Donahue. Find out the REAL reason Capparelli was removed form the office. You will never vote for another city wide guy again.

Dineen is a past national president and also served later as the national grievance chairman. Billy is out and the board of directors have already elected his replacement.

Take a minute officer and look at the magnet mailed to us by the city wide team for the last election. NOW ASK YOURSELF WHY SIX GUYS WHO RAN WITH BELLA AND BILL ARE NOT RUNNING WITH HIM THIS TIME? There is a lot of dirt that you have no idea about. But you will.

You are full of shit. The 16% only looks good in hindsight. At the time everyone was saying the city should shove it. And it was NOT a stand alone offer of 16%. It was part of a total package which no one wanted. Work rule changes etc.

Go to the arbitration award at

http://chicagofop.org/arbitration/2010/interest_arb_award_04162010.pdf

Read pages 54-59 (approx) and you will see what I mean. Overall we did better without that 16%. Of course more would have been better. But if we took that entire offer we would not have had the work schedule change (17 or 18 more RDO's a year, that is huge) and the 55 and out.

People seem to think that work schedule and 55 retirement was a gimme anyway. It was not. Tell me how the city saves money with us off another 17-18 days a year? I'd like to know that.

.
