More Evidence of a Promotional Class

Someone brought AdMin Fax #211188 to our attention. It is a notice from Human Resources that all verifications of Academic Credentials must be updated and current as of 12 December. This can only mean a "merit" list is being put together. According to this comment, the list has to be released before the new list hits the mailboxes:
  • Be on the lookout for scamming mfers....when you get your results it should say something along the lines of "you are now eligible for merit promotion". They usually try to sneak through one last class on the old merit list.

Based upon this, I am going to forecast a message coming out this week for sgt promotions starting monday. If they miss this one and release the results, they'll have to do a new merit selection from the new test eligibles.
We've seen guess-timates of low 30's to middle 80's for a class size. We've also heard that a class of lieutenants is in the offing.

Anyone know how short the sergeant rank supposedly is at the moment? Or lieutenants for that matter?

I know at least two sergeants who overstayed their welcome and should have retired by now, but they're desperate to get that lieutenant rank before they go.

Hope you both retire as sergeants. Outlasting everybody else doesn't make you any more qualified for the rank.

006/3rd watch! What in the hell is going on there? After working a few southside districts, this is hands down, the worst place I've ever been. From Sgt Mul***ex trying jam up any copper that misses a shave, or wearing black sneakers, to no people never working their assigned cars cuz Roytman thinks we need to be shaken up!

I feel a mass exodus coming, similar to the one in 003 a few years back.

Pax 501 - 2014 Career Opportunities

The future and success of any organization lies within its ranks, and CPD is no different. Everything undertaken over the past two and a half years is designed to help the Department build upon itself as a dynamic organization today, tomorrow and for years to come.

Opportunities for promotion and continued professional growth create a stronger Department, enhancing knowledge and abilities. For years there were far too few of these opportunities and I, along with the leadership of the Department, are working to change that.

Over the past 16 months, there have been promotions made to every rank in the Department. In 2013 alone, the Department saw the first new class of detectives promoted in five years and the first Sergeant's exam administered in over seven years.

Still, many of you joined the Chicago Police Department with the hope of serving in specialized law enforcement roles. Maybe you dream of becoming a canine handler or an explosive technician. Perhaps your ultimate goal is to patrol the shoreline of Lake Michigan in our Marine and Helicopter Unit. There are vast career opportunities within our Department. For years those opportunities were not within reach but, today, I am happy to announce we are making them a real possibility for you.

Beginning this month, and continuing throughout 2014, application processes will be announced for the following positions: Mounted Unit Officer, Marine Officer, Canine Handler, Explosive Technician, SWAT Team Member, and SWAT Team Sergeant.

Please do not wait until the application periods open to prepare for these career opportunities. Start now. These rewarding assignments require physical and mental stamina as well as specialized knowledge. The effort you put forth may help to distinguish you from the crowd and achieve your goals within the Department.

For those of you who have taken the first part of the Sergeant’s exam, I congratulate you on your commitment and I urge you to continue to prepare for the next portion. Your efforts will be revealed in the final results.

I would like to thank all of you, at every rank, for your continued dedication. You are the driving force behind the progress we are making to make our great City a safer place for everyone. You exceed expectations and demonstrate outstanding professionalism at every turn. With your continued hard work, we will build upon today’s successes and continue to serve and protect our communities.

Garry F. McCarthy
Superintendent of Police

OT. I just want to say the General Motors has just promoted their first female to their top position. Do you think we will hear from the press a hundred times that she is the first Caucasian to get this job? Nope, we won't cause no one cares about her skin color. Hey news whores, stop with first black this and first black that. The only ones worried about color keep shoving it in everyone else's face. Enough already. And oh yes since I'm on a rant, please stop using the phrase "Reverse discrimination" it's just ignorant. Discrimination isn't just if you are black, it's any color. If you are white blue or yellow and someone discriminates you based on color well, it's plain old shitty discrimination. You insult yourself by saying reverse discrimination. God bless the CPD.

OT: Armed citizens making a positive difference

Police say 25-year-old Demarcus Brandon tried to rob the store, in the 1700 block of East 87th Street, but was shot dead by the clerk. Brandon was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. Police found a handgun they believed to be his.

Brandon was paroled from the Shawnee Correctional Center this summer, where he had been serving concurrent 3-year and 13-year sentences, according to Illinois Department of Corrections and Cook County Court records.

The 13-year sentence stemmed from an incident in Chicago in which Brandon was charged with armed robbery with a firearm, armed violence, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, gun possession, aggravated fleeing from police, and having either a rifle with a barrel less than 16 inches or shotgun with a barrel less than 18 inches.

That case, and the one that ended with a 3-year sentence, both ended in plea deals, according to court records. He was credited for about 20 months time served and admitted to IDOC custody in September 2008

Thank you citizens for taking the initiative in your own defense.
More of this please!

I love to get my daily laugh when reading the comments on the blog. Here comes the truth. Sgts to start 23 December 2013. Class size will be 40. The academy has the room already set up. A second class of Sgts in January or February 2014. Class size is rumored anywhere from 20 to 50. The Sgt rank is over 150 short of authorized manpower.

McCarthy is doing merit interviews for Lt this week. Lts supposed to have a class on the 23rd of Dec 2013. Class is supposed to 20. Lts to get a second class in early 2014 whenever Sgts go. Class size rumored to be 20.

No Dicks at this time. Once again for the truth. All promotional exams are good until the new list is put up with both parts taken and invdividual rank is given out.

DO NOT LISTEN TO THE OTHER BS COMMENTS!!

I hope that the clueless sgt that ordered officers to a super flea, bug infested house be reprimanded. Knowingly sent officers to a house that it was supposed to be evicted by the cook county sheriffs. It downed at least a beat car and several officers sent to the hospital. The officers didn't even get far to do thr arrest due to the fleas. All the sgt had to do given fleas, bugs and unsafe conditions in that particular location. Just have the report done, contact caps and keep the officers safe. Yes, we must go into unsafe jobs, but not when we do not have a hazmat suit, we carry no bug spray and knowingly this downing of cars and sending officers to the hospital could of been avoided. Work, but do it smartly. This is the poor decision making we see in sgts. There should be better protocol to counter this type of poor decision making since our general order says that we cannot refuse an order. In the infinute wisdom now officers had to be sent to the hospital to get bug free and vehicle downed.

No management skills, HORRIBLE....HORRIBLE people skills, and No leadership skills. 006th district is a miserable place to work in, but when you have management who add to the stress of this misery its just an unhealthy negative work environment which patrolmen can't wait to either retire or leave the district if they can at the first chance they get. Ando, 56, was among three finalists for the $161,856-a-year job. Their names were submitted to Emanuel by a transition team that included former police Supt. i love all of the "take it to the bank" comments recently. I do have the true numbers of how many are getting made.. Im not saying "you heard it here first" or its some big secret but next friday the list for a new class will come out. The list will be for a class of 45 new sgts. one last class from the current list will be made in April (tentative) for 80 sgts. That list will then be taken down shortly after for the new list to come out. They are making a bigger class for the last class incase there is anything that may hold up the new list. im not saying take it to the bank yadayadayada but these are the final numbers at least for the next class. as we all know, the april class numbers and dates can be changed a dozen more times between now and then. but the list is set for next week and merit picks are also done. full class to be 45. congrats to those that made it, sure will be a nice christmas gift.

Completely agree with the 1:02 am post about 006. The Lt hates his people, hates his Sgts and hides in his office never making eye contact after messing with people's lives. I have NEVER been treated like this and what it's done to the morale is catastrophic. I've always found that bosses that focus on unnecessary things that aren't problems, are afraid to to address things that really are. It comes from Supvs working in slow Dists that never really had to be the police and that is what we have in 006 on 3rd watch. Between the Sgt nitpicking minor things on an already overworked watch and the most obnoxious Lt in the C.P.D. they create problems that don't exist,to say that they solved them. I can't get out of here soon enough.

SCC,

You ain't going to believe this shit.

The department spent who knows how many thousands of dollars installing a brand new set of lock boxes outside of the 011 District lockup. The existing lock boxes inside the sally-port haven't had keys in decades, so they installed these new ones.

There are two sets of keys, one in the door of the box and one in the DSS office. But the MASTER KEYS? The ones that open all 12 boxes? It seems the installers handed those off to the civilian maintenance personnel and they haven't been seen since, running on to 48 hours now, more than enough time top make any number of copies that can be used to........well, your imagination can run wild with that.

How long until guns start disappearing and if these master keys are keyed to any other stations' lock boxes, someone has just created a pretty big security nightmare.

I do agree with you to a point.... First off it's nobody's business what anyone else does or how long they stay... Now for my personal opinion.. If you can retire at 29 and a day you should.. I understand many can't due to kids still in high school or college etc but for me I will outwear my welcome at 29 and a day as many of you should.. Just my opinion. May work for some and not others. People should mind their own business. If they want to stay till 63 that is their business not yours. Worry about yourself only

excellent observation, but....someone might feel (their opinion) that someone is trying to run a legitimate operation within an illegitimate and corrupt organization...city stickers, shoes, shaving, uniform stuff..all part of the rules....then look at the bigger picture: hiring, promotions, assignments, so-called "merit" promotions, salaries (raises?), the future of pensions...take a look at the political leadership in Chicago, Cook County (the courts, the jails, etc.)....as the former US Secretary of State testified in Congress, when questioned as to the facts and circumstances surrounding the attack and murder of 4 Americans in Banghazi, Libya....she said, "what difference does it make?" (a life lesson?) Is it possible that small minded people think about the little things, maybe do not see, or cannot deal with, the whole picture?

The "rules" I was told. Finally I threw all my orders, law books, binders etc right in the garbage and stopped trying for promotion. The rest of my career was enjoyable after that.

SCC:

NEW Lieutenant's Exam to be given in 2014.

Bernstein just sent out an email for his study group coming up in February.

Bernstein files FOIAs on the city to see what outfit is going to be giving the exam and he should have a pretty good idea off what kind of bullshit test will be administered.

Rumor is Part 2 of the test will be some sort of oral board.... I am not even going to waste my time.

The list does NOT have to be released before the new scores come out. There have been numerous promotions over the years where new scores were out and they promoted one last time off of the old list. Our own 1st Deputy made Lt off of an old list when we had our new scores!

To the kid complaining about supervisors nitpicking things like uniforms, etc. Kid, try this. Wear the proper uniform, shave before you go to work and lastly try doing your job. You will be amazed how doing what you are supposed to will make your life and your supervisor's life easier. While you are sitting in your parent's basement saying how full of shit I am, consider this. If this was McDonalds, you would have been fired in the first few days for doing what you do everyday at work here. So grow up, drop to your knees and be thankful you have a job that you don't deserve. Hell kid, you should try being the police for once, you may actually enjoy it. Stuck in 006 but on 2nd watch and I feel sorry for those guys on the 3rd watch. The Lt (V.R.) has no respect for the kids and vets. He constantly belittles them and foolishly disciplines them all thru his weasel Sgt. If this watch is as stupid, lazy and useless as he says, maybe he should leave the safety of the station and deal with this hell hole of a place. Had to laugh when I saw the "McDrunky" campaign ticket calling for a clean slate at FLOP. Bunch of old FOP rip off artists and hucksters being sponsored by a lawyer who wants back in so he can raid the FOP henhouse (again). All the pictures taken at a law firm, by the way. FTW!

Not much better is the "Disability Dean" ticket, bought and paid for by another law firm that used to handle all FOP grievance work back when Disabled Dean was upstairs at FLOP. FLOP could not have paid more for worse results. But Angelo will bring them back b/c they are bankrolling his campaign.

Decisions, Decisions.

Education Supports Promotion
Through Saint Xavier University I have been involved in the undergraduate degree completion and graduate level MBA programs offered specifically for CPD officers and covered by the City’s tuition reimbursement program. I am impressed with CPD officers' commitment to self-improvement through education. As a former banker and now an instructor, I am impressed with the depth of business knowledge and understanding displayed by officers pursuing the MBA graduate degree program in classes I teach. I wonder why more officers do not take advantage of the educational benefit provided under their current union contract with the City. It is equivalent to a $20,000 per year bonus! If you wish to know more about the SXU graduate and undergraduate programs for the term starting in January, stop by the Training Academy on Wednesday, December 18, from noon until 4

God help CPD if any of these 4 year wonders score high enough to secure a promotion at 6 years otj. CPD needs experienced leadership. Not these know-it-alls from this entitlement generation. I'm sorry but ten nickel bag arrests from traffic stops of non licensed drivers do not make you the "real Police" and a qualified Supervisor. Talk to any of the new Ppos lately? Most of them think they should be bosses and never plan on being the Police.

Sorry man, I do agree I like seeing older guys make it just for the fact that thy deserve it for putting up with the job for so long but it doesn't make them a good sgt... I've met lost of guys who have 20 plus years who are absolutely clueless and others who refuse how to do things the way they should be done theses days not the way they were done in the 80s and 90s.. Times change and this dept is a new place that will never be the same. You have to know how to operate in this new dept... I've got 28 years on. I'm done in 11 more months. I even admit I sometime don't know what the hell to do anymore with some things when it comes to technology and new units and notifications.. It's not the simple job we once enjoyed. If we slapped someone it wasn't even put in the reports because it wasn't a big deal... Now your doin paper forever. Let the kids have it.. It's their dept now. We lost years ago. The last good year of them actually letting us be the police was 99.. All downhill pretty steady after that. Good luck to all who take the test old and young

What I have learned Junior, is that you can't motivate a do nothing lazy piece of shit. You had no intention of being the police, this was just the best paying job you could get with your pathetic work history. Thank goodness the city lowered the standards so you could slide in. Do you really want motivation? Would a rousing speech at roll call suddenly make you the "real police"? I doubt it, this like everything in your bag of excuses is just another reason not to do your job. I know you, you are the lazy POS that comes in late and wants to leave early after doing nothing all day. You feel that you are entitled to it just because you showed up to work. You bitch and moan about everything while doing nothing. So why exactly should anybody waste their time on you? And what the fuck does you supervisor have to do with your contract? Dumbass. Why don't you show me how wrong I am by quitting and working in the private sector, I am sure your impressive resume and superior work ethic will guarantee your success, you might even get that rah rah motivational speech you so desperately need to get you to work.

Spot on! I am working on a degree from a very well respected program. The school collects all the money upfront. If I do not earn an A (it is a real school and highly competitive), then I pay the difference. If the semester requires three classes, then I have to cover one of the classes. And I have to wait 5 or 6 months to get reimbursed for the part that the city is paying for. But at least I am not wasting my time with a diploma mill.

By the junior, how did you do on part one of the sgt's test? I always hope that guys like you actually make sgt because it would be so funny. What would you do, lead by example? You don't change from being a dogass to a super duper working supervisor. No, you would do the same BS only now you will be bitching about the guys that you have to supervise. I noticed that you never deny being a useless dogass, you just keep blaming your supervisors for all your problems. Does your sgt really have that much influence in your life? Junior, check your diaper and then man up. You decide the kind of police officer you want to be, not your supervisor. Time to start looking inward with the hard questions, because blaming others for your shortcomings isn't going to make things any better for yourself.

What an idiot this guy is... As for me, no juice, no clout, just work and studied hard. 19 years on job. Legit Sgt. and Legit Lt. If you apply yourself, stop everything else in your life for a few months, you can do well on these tests and get promoted.

St Xaviers MBA program is a joke. How is it that everyone on the dept graduates from that program with honors? Get a real degree.
