Sgt Results Coming

A number of people forwarded this form letter to us:
  • Dear [Officer],

This e-mail serves as notification that a hard copy letter containing your test results from the October 26, 2013 City of Chicago Police Sergeant Written Examination will be mailed via US Postal Service to your address within the next 10 business days. Please be aware that the notice will be sent by CPS Human Resource Services on behalf of the City of Chicago.

The letter will be sent to your address of record, which is:

    [xxxx N/S/E/W xxxxxxxx STREET
    CHICAGO, ILLINOIS 606xx]

If that is not your current address, please IMMEDIATELY contact the City of Chicago, Department of Human Resources via e-mail at police-application@cityofchicago.org providing your updated mailing address.
So just under two months to grade a ScanTron test. It'll be interesting to see the scores and if they release the actual raw base totals of the actual number of questions that survived the challenge and manipulation sessions.

You DID mean, SCAMTron, right?

Part One of this test is just the first step in the promotional charade process.

If this is your first crack at a CPD promotional exam and you have no juice, it'll soon be evident who does.

If you're disgusted with this job now, wait until you see who you might be addressing as "Sarge" after the first couple of classes are made off this test.

The reason it takes so long:

BECAUSE the scores had to be curved DOWN so many applicants will be eligible to be promoted by MERIT.

The entrance exam is this Saturday.

The test being given looks more difficult than the 2010 exam because it is being given by a different company: IO Solutions.

HOWEVER, the results of the exam will be given to the city the same as the sergeants exam and you can surely bet it will be curved ridiculously LOW so that the city will have a large pool of minority candidates who will be given a "lottery number" for consideration.

Did you know that the police can strike now? They can stand together and refuse to work for straight time for CTA, refuse to work VRI which screws themselves by allowing the city not to hire, refuse to work any specials.

Oh, never mind. It's CPD. Sell out yourselves and your brothers for a quick buck from the city. A real union would demand this of its members and force the city to negotiate a deal. Instead we get the last offer from Rahm because he knows we're a joke and won't stand together.

To the PO with the Foreign National driving question.
For 1237 Posting

They are authorized to drive as long as they have an international license along with a valid passport that has a current visa.

This is only for visitors and is void if the subject has established resident status in the US. If they don't have all the documents they should be issued a citation for operating with no DL.

Make sure to run checks for IL DL status along with INS if something doesn't seem right.

I remember when I was in college. It took the instructor two months to grade an exam. Oh, no, wait. Never mind. We had it the next school day/class session. I remember now. There was a grading system in place and you had to fall into its system.

I wonder if the medical boards do this shit, or if the airlines do it? You know, you can't pass the test on your own and we feel bad for you because you grew up in Englewood but here is your scalpel or here are the controls to the 747. Just figure it out even though we know that you are not qualified.

Now who would go to that Dr. or fly on that airline? Anyone? (Crickets....) Funny but for some reason "Oh, but that's different..." I am not sure how nor why but anytime I raise this point that is the response I usually get.

12/10/2013 05:06:00 AM

You are so funny. You say that people from Englewood are getting a pass and are the people with merit? More like Bridgeport son. Look, I hate it, absolutely hate it when people can't see reality in front of their own face. Please tell me, every single time in the last fifteen years (that is how much time I have) when they have made a merit Lt. D.C., Commander, etc. where have they come from? What is their race? In the majority of cases, they were white, Hispanic and then black. In that order.

Be on the lookout for scamming mfers....when you get your results it should say something along the lines of "you are now eligible for merit promotion". They usually try to sneak through one last class on the old merit list.

Based upon this, I am going to forecast a message coming out this week for sgt promotions starting monday. If they miss this one and release the results, they'll have to do a new merit selection from the new test eligibles.

Striking similarities. Inspector Mike R is a tough guy, rite?

It's all legit. I can't wait to see who is in the top 200. I can't wait to connect all of the dots and see who is connected to who. SCC once the sgt. list is published, we should all connect the dots.

I am all for a true merit process. An actual test in which no one gets inside help or knowledge and there are no special secret study groups. But I must be dreaming. Chicago is the only city in America in which a person can be promoted based on "merit". Yet even the city won't define or delineate specifically what "merit" actually means.

The reason it takes so long to score a Chicago Police or Fire promotion exam is because they have to research each candidates Department clout. Like so and so gets an extra 10 points because his Uncle is watch Commander in 8. That guy over there get an extra 5 point because he used to buy doughnuts for the Commander and crew when they were in Gang Crimes.

State law has said that any foreign person with a drivers license from their country can drive here legally as long as they can establish that they are in the country legally i.e. a visa, passport, plane ticket. Hence being able to rent a car on vacation in the same manner that we are able to drive in foreign countries. Department directive prohibits asking anyone about their immigration status so thats where the problem is so to answer your question. Yes they can drive here legally but no you will not be able to verify that. You can look up state law and department directive they conflict with each other but remember state law always trumps department directive.

All tourists are afforded the same privilege as long as they have their valid license from their country and are here legally per state law this has been the case for years. Certain countries require visas to enter the country such as Brazil and Mexico in addition the US government provides temporary work permits if presented with these documents they can drive legally. But remember you can not ask anyone about their "legal" status per G.O. I pointed this discrepancy out to a Sgt from IAD years ago when he came to our dist to speak to the public about their fears of being deported by the police and asked him how to verify if someone such as a tourist could drive here legally without us asking about their status to which he simply could not give me an answer. Look up the law and general order for yourself and you will see.

If I am correct, it is a United Nations Treaty that allows a citizen of any country to drive a motor vehicle in another country temporarily if they have a valid driver's license from their country. At one time, you could go to the Chicago Motor Club and obtain an " International Driver's License" with your photo on it ( it was paper book) and contained about 20 languages. You would show this and your home country license if stopped by police. I had one when traveling to Europe. When in the Army in Germany, I showed my Illinois license, and my military European license. You do not need anything else when traveling. I would venture to guess the same goes for Mexican citizens here illegally.

You guys are lucky. It took 4 years for the CFD to process 1200 combined written/oral grades for the most recent Lieutenants test.

I think you're missing the point, SARGE. People are not bitching about the long wait to see their results. People are pissed because everyone knows the results could have been known the same day as the test was taken. Everyone knows the department has to make sure the clouted morons make it to the next phase, and tweaking the minimum score takes time. This is what we're pissed about.

Clear now? Sounds like you benefitted from the meritorious process. Now go get me an event number, SARGE.

Sounds like YOU missed the "F" in CFD, officer.

That's great news, from dog p.o.'s to dog sgt's. Stay on the medical and your fake iod's dogs were doing fine without you. Go out drinking every night, yes we all know about it, and have the balls to still take the sgt. test with us, and to come to furlough pics when you can't come to work. Do your job first, then maybe someday you can get promoted. Stay safe for all officers who are working is this brutal cold, back each other up, and all have a Happy Holidays..

Yes you are so right, you should have seen these ones on medidal and their fake iod's coming to furlough pics today, looking like bustouts, out every night drinking, and have the balls to want to get a good furlough after they been off since summer, some even before. It's a shame to all of us that come to work every night even though we would rather be with our familes. Please be safe everybody and stay warm.

Do the math again. He didn't get 60 days, he got 183 days suspension. Big difference.

He didn't get any special treatment due to being a reverend. If you take a look at the medical integrity cases at the PB, no one has been fired with exception of the oil wrestler in 023 who had two police board cases. Look at the other cases and you will see. He should have been shitcanned because jerks like him are going to ruin it for everyone.

That's a tough man
I was a wee bit confused cuz of the similarities b'tween Ditka & the real "Iron Mike" former Capt/XO in Belmont.
Striking similarities. Inspector Mike R is a tough guy, rite?
He's not afraid to look U in the eye, screw a bike team this summer(5 day work week), and that grueling work schedule of 20 hours a week w/a take home car.
The two have soooo much in common. One is a legend in his career. The other "Iron Mike" is legend in his own mind....depending on what psych meds he's on.
Coach, congrats again. "Iron Mike", I'm so sorry U have to look at U'r self in the mirror. I wouldn't wish Belmont Mike's reflection back on anyone.
Cheers

Look, I hate it, absolutely hate it when people can't see reality in front of their own face. Please tell me, every single time in the last fifteen years (that is how much time I have) when they have made a merit Lt. D.C., Commander, etc. where have they come from? What is their race? In the majority of cases, they were white, Hispanic and then black. In that order.

You hit it on the nail with that one. It is extremely hard for a black to get meritoriously promoted, and if you are a a black female you have next to no chance of getting a merit promotion. Most black female supervisors got promoted based on their test score, well except Barb West..........lol

Let's hope and pray they make a sgt. class. A lot of good people are waiting to be called. A lot of officers have no clout, no juice and they have seen some people leap frog ahead of them while they wait for their turn. That is to be disheartening. I want some of my brothers and sisters to know that not everyone is rooting against you. Some are pulling for you. Why in the world some officers are full of glee and joy at other people's misery is beyond me. In my district when a bunch of officers were dumped to midnights, about 40% of the officers were happy and all smiles. That is truly sad.

you complain about the officers on IOD or extended medical absence like you know something the department doesn't...

If you have information that suggests they are taking something that doesn't belong to them, or that jeopardizes the extent to which benefits are afforded by your employer to officers in need of recovery from sickness or injury, then by all means, SPEAK UP!

Otherwise, you are engaging in the same type of broad accusations and a presumption of guilt that has the public clamoring to cut off benefits for things they know nothing about.

Someone on IOD or extended paid medical leave to recuperate from injury, sickness, or surgery, luckily for all of us, needs only comply with the policy set forth by the City, the Dept. and the Medical Section. That compliance has mostly to do with following doctors orders. We also now have 2nd and 3rd party corroboration with regard to IOD.

Working a side job? Certainly at fault. Stepping out for a few? None of anybody's business unless your doctor said don't do it, or unless you're on stationary status.

Matter of fact, next time you're on IOD or Medical, ask yourself how much you'd like to have every one at your district know your whereabouts and activities 24-7 and whether or not it seems like a good idea to add that as a prerequisite for certifying an injury or absence. Never mind my doctor, "what do my co-workers say? Do they concur...?"

Luckily, the dept. doesn't bother with that kind of threshold.

Yes. People from Ireland and many other countries can drive legally here as long as the carry a legit drivers license from their home countries and a valid passport/visa just as you may drive in mexico or cannada with your illinois drivers license. That is why rental car companies exist and operate internationally for business and tourists alike. If I couldn't drive when I travelled abroad I would not travel.

Whether it's Bridgeport or Englewood it's the same difference. Where you grew up should not matter is my point. There should not be any special considerations unless there a distinct definition of the word "Merit" and there is not. Race should not matter on promotions nor should sex nor if you are gay/lesbian. I think Affirmative Action has it's place but you should still be qualified for a job. The bar should be set and that's it. And the bar should be set in advance and not manipulated to accommodate who is on the list. Again if someone knew their pilot did not pass his test and was given special consideration because he was black, or it was a woman or they grew up in Bridegport and their daddy was a CEO would they want him/her at the controls at 35,000 feet in an emergency? I don't know about you but I want the most qualified at the controls and don't care if he/she is black, brown, short or fat. I just don't see why it's different on CPD. I have no problem working for anyone who is qualified irregardless of race or sex.

Throughout the history of the Department we have had medical role abusers. Yes we know who they are and surely the Department should know. The question is why is nothing being done about it? We hear this lame excuse of this is a benefit afforded to us and it's not a benefit if you don't use it.
I say bullshit, yes we are so lucky to have this benefit but again the select few abuse the hell out of it.
This puts the weight on the backs of the good officers who continue everyday doing their jobs and working their butts off.
I fully understand there will be medical issues and yes people do need recovery time, this is fully understandable and acceptable.
However you look at the recent front page were the officer was on disability allegedly for the inability to fire his weapon and yet shooting big game. Then you have a future candidate for FOP president who also on disability and yet working a full time job.
Now ask yourself is this right?
Then we have officers who I personally know that have been shot or got injured on the job some serious and others not so but yet they still have the desire to come back and give what they can to the job. I applaud you officers and thank you.
Now tell me just the two examples and there are many more, is there any reason that they cannot work the desk or call back or something to give relief to us who are busting our backs out here while others sit back and collect our money and yet make more money while under the ruse of medical disability?
Make all the excuses you want this is not right!!

Please tell me, every single time in the last fifteen years (that is how much time I have) when they have made a merit Lt. D.C., Commander, etc. where have they come from? What is their race? In the majority of cases, they were white, Hispanic and then black. In that order.

The above poster is really full of BS. It is people like this that post nonsense on the internet and expect others to pass it around as if it is the truth. If you post such BS, then back it up with actual numbers and not just your inner gut feeling after a night of drinking.

Here is a link to 025 1st watch officer R.W. hearing before the police board. He worked secondary employment while on iod. He got a 60 day suspension.

I guess it pays to be a reverend.

Isn't this the guy that ran for alderman and played the race card.

6 month suspension, not 60 days

who cares about what the number is, they should just skip the first part and take the second. there is no reason to have the first part at all. so all you little bitches who complain about people with low grades passing and fixing the grades for the first part just stop. dont you think they if they terrible on the first part and they lowered the score it would show up on the second part? if you cant figure that out then you wont pass the second part anyway.

"Iron Mike" is going in2 The Hall of Fame & his number is being retired as well.
Cheers

Self destruction through drinking thats' why he lost the spot.

He has being a bitter prick his whole meritorious career, what a disgrace that even in joke he is called Iron Mike.

There are more white police officers so that should be the case. Click on the "promotions" tag on SCC's blog. Take a look at the merit promotions under Jody's watch. It tells an entirely different story.

12/10/2013 11:44:00 PM

Jody's watch covers 3 years of merit promotions...big deal.

12/11/2013 06:25:00 AM

Well Jody's the only one who put it out there. It is the only tangible proof of who is merit and who is not. So it is a big deal. Carry on making shit up and then agreeing with yourself.

12/11/2013 09:28:00 AM

First, your dyslexia ought to be a cause for disability.
Aside from that, this job isn't about how many others need to help you with your "busted ass" problem, that sounds mighty personal. The department itself has restrictions on qualifying for 'desk jobs.' It's called CLOUT.

As for 'light duty,' again, you should familiarize yourself with medical section policy before you find yourself one day shocked to learn the hard way (when you need help with a sickness or injury) who gets those spots and how you get those spots. There are rules, policy, and restrictions. So all the mouthing off you do doesn't help.

The "recent" article (a year and a half or more ago) was a hit piece on our whole department and you should know better than to suddenly join in the kangaroo court of public opinion conjured up by the likes of the local press at the whim and pleasure of your lovely mayor...

If you don't know, then don't be quick to judge.

If a guy can't protect his weapon, due to an injury that compromises weapon retention, what does that have to do with his firing a gun on a vacation?
Since when did you become his doctor to say that he should never again fire a weapon?
Matter of fact, heaven forbid he owns a gun, because according to you, he's somehow lost the right to ever use it, even in an emergency for fear that even a fellow cop like you would now demand that he be brought in more than his mandated annual review, right?
People who opt to stay on the job aren't doing you a favor if the department didn't make sure the decision isn't just to please your sense of honor or to help you have an easier time out there.

There are departments around the country that hire disabled police officers.
They must be in places way more respectful of what a cop is able to offer in spite of his difficulties.

They make sure to fit the disabled officer into a position and title description that won't harm his status with whatever department he was serving when he was injured and disabled.

You don't get to keep doing your exact same duties in your job description if you or the job are now different then when hired.

If you can't do the job for which you were hired, you don't just get to modify it according to your (dis)abilities, especially not to satisfy co-workers' opinions of you.
Even for restricted duty there is an application process after your doctor has determined that you can't do the job as hired.

A guy or gal with a knee or back problem, for example, shouldn't be followed around by a secret goon squad with cameras because he or she picks up their kid or groceries or even goes for a jog to try and stay active.

There's a far cry difference between a 20 minute jog and 8 to 9 or more hours humping in a squad in and out in this weather.

I'm full duty, and hope to remain so, but jeez, if it isn't your business, quit assuming and stop stressing about what the other person is "getting away with..." life's way too short.

Something about a splinter in your neighbor's eye and that whole log in your own.

Prepare yourself for years of bitterness and disappointment. In the meantime, apply to the FBI, CIA, Secret Service, DEA, NCIS and US Marshals and take what comes first. Don't look back and retire at 55.

There is a reason much truth is found on this blog from old timers. No one in a position of power on this department gives the slightest shit about your creds with St Ignatius or the rest. All that matters is who is your daddy and who sent you.

You start thinking that you "deserve" a promotion and you will be terribly disappointed and years from now you will say "that asshole on the blog was right."

light duty spots don't get handed out like that.

you don't see the rights you have when hired?

Do you understand you don't just give up the protections of a contract that spells out your duties upon hire.

They could certainly find "anything" else for you to do...
Who gets to decide what this new job is, exactly?
You?

You are too special for patrol. Please find a federal job.
