Bundle Up

  • After several inches of snow fell Sunday morning, the next winter weather story is the start of what could be the longest stretch of subzero temperatures the Chicago area has seen in decades.

A winter weather advisory is in effect from 3 a.m. Sunday to 6 a.m. Monday, as the snowstorms are expected to be followed by winds increasing Sunday afternoon to about 30 mph, with 40 mph gusts, with some snow expected as well.

Highs Sunday reached the lower 30s, but Sunday night, temperatures will begin to drop, falling to between 2 and 6 degrees below zero with wind chills around 35 degrees below zero. A wind chill warning is in effect from 3 a.m. Monday through 9 a.m. Wednesday.
Safety first boys and girls.

It's true that global warming is worse than expected this winter. It's our punishment for driving all those cars and SUVs instead of taking public transportation, or riding a bicycle.

I've pretty much had it with this weather. The only people who like this weather are the people with snowmobiles, backyard ice rinks, and McCrimeStats. Although, there was another shooting where a 15yr old was killed tonite. Only 54 days til spring.

Take public transportation?? The CTA? METRA? Get real.

Someone sneezes and the signaling and tracks get messed up on METRA. Trains are always late.

As for the CTA, I don't ride in enclosed cars where others seem to think it is ok to take a dump.

Slightly off topic.....while its so cold you need the thickest jacket you own lets nit forget the boots. The boots not because of all the added snow but because of all tithe added bullshit being thrown around by our own members (active, retired, and on disability) running for FOP. I have listen to more accusations by BD at DA and then even more by Dean back at Bill. Lets not forget that all of the accusations are not facts. The facts are that DA was with Nolan during a time when we....the body were stompped on by those who were supposed to ptotect us....money was flying everywhere where, incluging paying for nights out on the town on our dime and it was covered up. Funny thing DA thinks that we have forgotten, well we haven't. The only guy who talked about real issue has been McD......so far no bones have fallen out of his closet nor has he made accusations without proof. Hey DA that list you passed around had two running mates on it who's names were not highlighted ......what you thought we couldn't read. You are a little fake take you B.S. and peddle it somewheres else over by dare. You think, talk, walk and act like a little monster always scamming...cant work, can work in store, can't work, can teach, can't work, can run union.....NOT............ your team has two people not drinking your kool -aid and they have said so.

Guys follow these cold weather auto maintenance tips: 1. Fill up your entire gas tank. Don't leave it partially or like 80% empty. You need as much fuel as possible so if God forbid your car gets a flat tire, etc.. you can still have the heat on. In the winter time you will have to wait a long time for a tow truck. 2. In your car have jumper cables, blanket, perishable food like granola bars. Take water with you also. 3. Take a cell phone charger and also one of those portable battery charger for your cell phone. 4. Always let your relatives or friends know where you are heading and which road you are taking.

My daughter's life was spared two years ago. She lives in Dallas and went to school in Austin. In inclement weather her car slipped off the road and went into a ditch. She was stuck in her car. Thankfully daddy taught her to always know where she was at. So when she called 911 she mentioned she was between mile market 111 and 118. Knowing where she was saved her life.

Are the wheels falling off the citywide team bus?

Mark Donahue told numerous roll calls that it was a strategic decision not to send in the letter (i.e. it was ok to screw the membership in order to get the citywide team back in control). After he has received a lot of blow back his story is changing.

Billy Dougherty has told roll calls numerous revisions:

1. I did not know the letter was not signed.
2. It was not my job to make sure the letter was signed.
3. I could not sign the letter.
4. I would not have signed the letter even if I knew it was not signed.
5. It was Mark Donahue’s job to train Shields not mine.

Now Mark Donahue is accompanying Dougherty to every roll call he goes to. They now do not trust each other and are afraid that the other one will sell them out. Interesting.

I also heard at VRI that the roll calls in 025 all walked out on the citywide team. The wheels are falling off fast. Sid Davis is now trying to distance himself from the rest of the citywide ticket. But all vets know that Davis and Dougherty are married at the hip. Any vet will never vote for Davis agian or Dougherty either. Davis now says it was a big mistake to run retired Sgt Mike Voight for trustee.

New rumor is that Billy Dougherty and Tommy McMonagh have made a side bar pack that which ever one finishes 3rd will support the other in a run off. Who ever wins will appoint the other as a Field Rep. Aguliar is retiring 15 April 2014 and DiMaria is leaving shortly after he sworn in so if Billy somehow by a act of god got elected he has openings for Tommy.

They are cowering under ELECTRIC blankets.
Me, I'm running the water faucets like mom and dad taught me to do when the temps go below zero. I leave the doors to the sink cabinets open, to get heat from the room. I'm covering the one bad window with plastic sheeting.
And I'm using the car at least once a day, which warms up the car and which keeps me from becoming a prisoner in the house just because it's cold out. Gloves, people! And a warm coat. Winter in Chicago.

I also curious why you keep running on a platform of eliminating positions when you know that won't go into effect until the next term. You softies don't know how to dress... Stop your crying... Spend that leftover communion money for proper winter gear...

Firstly... Any supervisor that screams about ANY Copper blousing their boots is a goof.

He'll be the same one in your ass like cheap tissue jaw-jacking about a uniform infraction write-up because you grew a salt ring around the cuff of your trousers.

They're out there...

Good waterproof boots can run about $200-$300.

Stout wool socks about $15 a pair.

Midweight silk long johns $75-$100.

2nd layer of mid weight synthetic long johns with a plush/wicking fabric to pull perspiration away from the silk which is a wicking fabric itself.

Baklava/head cover/dickie with a nose/mouth vent.

The trick is layering/wearing clothing that doesn't bind and restrict movement... Think of stuff that will keep you warm even when damp...

Cotton thermals are a hypothermia/death sentence if you're stranded somewhere.

The only cotton you should have on is an outer garment that's been boiled in oil/wax treated to repel wind and water.

One-Finger mittens with a water/wind proof glove liner if you're doing things that require manual dexterity...

You're only as good as your clothing in weather like this.

Couldn't the lawyers who are funding the citywide team put up 10% more to use a union print shop. The Citywide guys could all be called scabs for not using union printers.

Now, we got midget from "Little people-Big world."
It really appears all us wheel-gun copper' have all about retired. We did try and train the new police in how to handle the shit, few listened.
Carried a wheel gun, but always had my 45.cal auto with three extra clips in the pocket.
We worked CD and when we got out of the car, we did not look like robo cop.
Our pistols were concealed and the only thing we had in our hand was our "kel-lite" or an axe handle. We got respect and gave it back in the hood and had a million laughs with hood laughs.
Been retired for a couple and have not seen a CPD squad rushing to call with lights and siren ! What is that all about.

Especially Coppers...

Please... Stay safe. Stay warm. Stay hydrated but avoid coffee beverages and eat dense stuff like hearty meat and vegetable stews.

P.S.

Field strip and lube those weapons and handcuffs... More fabric = more lint and other crud.

There is a difference between medical roll abuse and being put on permanent disability. You are talking about medical roll abuse, which can be reported to IAD anonymously as theft.
The post here, however, was referring to disability, which is granted by and paid for by our pension fund.

Talking about two different things. Disability comes from the pension fund and is long term. Medical roll scams the City and if the City lets you get away with it, shame on the City.

And what about the officers who say "There's a couple of real gems out of 019 that have been on the medical for nearly every part of their body" and do nothing? Why don't you go and put in a complaint about these officers scamming the system? Do you think there is some magic unit somewhere waiting to catch those stealing from the medical roll? There isn't. You go to IAD and complain about those scammers. Fuck them, set them up, whatever you have to do. Encourage others to do likewise. That's how to get officers to quit stealing from the medical roll. Peer pressure.

You already know the salary of the people upstairs in the office. The rest of them, the trustees, make a $600 per month stipend plus a smaller amount for each committee meeting, $50 or $75. The immediate past president (Donahue) also gets a stipend, at least $600 a month, in addition to his pay as lobbyist.

---

Good arctic weight mil spec polypropylene long underwear, tops and bottoms. They are great, not heavy or bulky but I have never got cold with those. Don't buy natural fabrics, the polypropylene works best. It wicks moisture out and is a great insulator. Don't wear any other fabric next to your skin, the polyprop goes next to your skin. The Army came up with this shit to keep soldiers warm in sub zero weather. I used it on motorcycle trips in cold weather. Use it at work. The only problem is when you go inside, gets too warm.

Amazing Back in the Ol 023 a PO returning from the War in Iraq that worked 3rd Watch with seniority was dumped to Mids 1st watch to take care of the useless folks that had less time and on the medical. The PO took it with grace and dignity. A guy who never hit the medical and a working copper too

Speaking of January in Chicago reminds me of two things growing up, CFD responding to calls with guys riding the tailboard because the cabs of the rigs only had room for the company officer and the engineer, and the officers assigned to the Loop traffic. They were out there no matter what and I never heard one cry about it. I can still hear their traffic whistles. We could learn a lot from people like these.

He is posting on this blog night and day to tell people how bad the other guys are. It's not working Billy Boy 12 years is way too long to be in the union office!

Arrest as many of these animal abusers as you can. These poor dogs are suffering every day at their hands, but more so being chained out in this weather. If we could just get judges to give some significant jail time too.

I was working back in the early 80's when we had 4 or 5 winters in a row of brutal cold. Feb of '82 was the worse; two consecutive weeks of temps 25-30 degrees blow zero. Homeless dying by the truckload and people stranded in their cars in the outlaying rural areas dying as well. No cell phones or GPS back then.

1/27/2014 04:25:00 PM

There's a thing called the internet. You're actually on it! It's also good for research. Your wild exaggerations of Feb 82 wouldn't even be valid in the Yukon. Save the drama. Maybe you confused it with an episode of T.J. Hooker.

If you are so aware of the internet and said it should be used for research, maybe you should do some research before you run off your mouth. Comments are valid and below is part of the research that you should have done.

1982 – Minus 26 on 10 January; Minus 25 on 16 January. Wettest December (8.56”) in Chicago history; 71 F on 2 December.
1983- Great El Nino year. Wettest calendar year in Chicago history (49.35”) up to this point. Coldest December, -25 F on 24th.
1985 – Coldest year since 1917. Minus 27 recorded on 20 January – coldest temperature in all Chicago history down to present. Wettest November (8.22”) in Chicago history

1)Cline is fleecing the fund with over $10K a month. Did little police work.
2)Lot of coppers are legitimately messed up.
3)Just cause the feds have the files, doesn't mean arrests are imminent.

Off Topic, I recently heard that a couple officers on disability were recently followed by private investigators in the last year and are now being forced to retire or be charged criminally?
I want to know what these officers were found doing by the private investigators.

Does anyone know if there is a court date coming up in the FOP lawsuit against Google? It would be a good idea for as many coppers as possible to be there, to show our support for this case and so that everyone knows where the real police stand: against these bastards from Google and their efforts to screw us.

Easy junior..... There is no lawsuit against Googlea nand they aren't fucking over the police, it's just to OBTAIN information , go back to sleep or read the court filing.

Some other goof also suggested to settle with Google and put that money in the pension.

Years ago I went into the Army Surplus store on the 4600 N. Block of Broadway and bought some silk long underwear, I was working a movie detail and it was getting really cold, I can't remember if they said to wear it over your long underwear or under it but it did work, I also bought a pair of NEO overshoe boots, if you are planning to be outdoors for a while these boots rocks.

There is a difference between medical roll abuse and being put on permanent disability. You are talking about medical roll abuse, which can be reported to IAD anonymously as theft.
The post here, however, was referring to disability, which is granted by and paid for by our pension fund.

Just a thought...

Will Chicago be ready when all this snow melts and floods the sewer and drainages system?

There could be hell to pay down south along the Mississippi River in cities like Vicksburg MS, and New Orleans LA when all this white stuff melts.

A crisis Rahm won't let go to waste.

1/27/2014 11:47:00 AM

So true! Because there has never been snow before in winter, and there will never be snow again!

1/27/2014 06:20:00 PM<<<

There has been water, there has been snow like this before. There also have been ice jams and massive floods of low laying cities and large area of farm lands. Now if the Department of the Interior and the Corps of Engineers is up for it they should be ready for the melt off when it comes and not be overwhelmed by it.

But maybe massive flooding is part of the plan, like what Larry the Cable Guy said about Cajuns with New Orleans, the levees and hurricanes.

"...I would like to state for the record that I disagree with that assessment that Cajuns are stupid. Anybody who would build a city 5 feet below sea level in a hurricane zone and fill it with Democrats who can't swim is a genius".

But Obama is ready for this; he will just blame George Bush.

OT- The brass heard from all the guys beefing that copper' were ducking early. Here it is.
Seeing the swipe machines are useless, EVERYONE will sign in and time stamp when you get in and leave at the end of tour.
Fool proof, don't even try to circumvent this simple sign in. Play games, and you just might get 30-pending.
This includes everyone, except the cmdr.
The sheet must be faxed and CPD mailed within 3 hours of tour end.
If you fail/forgot to sign out, you will take 1-3 days !
Caution - Don't even attempt to sign your friends out.
People will be taking a lot of time by trying to beat this system.
This came about by no arrests by tac/narcotics the last four hour into tour. The Supt is livid and wants this done ASAP. Also, the eye is the sky will be watching for violations. It appears that N/S districts were found to lead the pack in early ducks.
It also was noted that the beat guys are far from responsible of ducking early.
Don't risk catching a major beef on this issue guys. Bad beef (CR) to have in your pers. file.

Man, it's really cold in Chicago in January. Who the hell would have thought that? We should stay in and not work. That's the socialist message. If it's too cold, stay home and keep the kids home.

Pussies. If you put on more than a fucking tutu for your ballerina lifestyle you would be able to brave the fucking elements.

Some ideas for the clueless aldermen:
1. Take your kids to work with you.
2. Stay home and burn a sick day.
3. Know the names and phone numbers of your children's friends and their PARENTS. Call around. Put together a group that will step up when this rare event occurs. If Susie's dad is taking the day off to mind his two kids, maybe he likes you enough to watch your two kids, as well.
4. Ask your retired mom or dad to mind your kids.
5. Drop your kid (age sensitive here, you have to make the call) at the library and then work a half day or a shortened day. All my friends went to the library after school til our working parents got home three hours later and we got a lot of homework and leisure reading done that way.
6. In other words, use your brain and your associations and put something together. Is there a YMCA in your neighborhood? A boys/girls club? A church center? Be a parent and think for yourselves.
