Camera Laws Falling

  • Ohio cities make missions on red light and speed cameras, but a recent court ruling should give them pause.

Cameras in Elmwood Place, Ohio, were declared a “scam,” and in March a judge ruled the city had to shut them down. The city defied the order, which led Hamilton County Judge Robert Ruehlman to declare the city in contempt. He then ordered the Hamilton County Sheriff to seize the equipment.

Thursday, Ruehlman reiterated the camera system violated Ohio’s constitution and rules on judicial process and public notice. He ordered the city to refund the $1.76 million collected in fines from the cameras — and to pay attorneys’ fees — because the city “acted in bad faith in implementing the ordinance.”
That's a pretty vicious slap at the town. This cold be the groundwork for any number of suits against the cameras, their operators and the city. After all, these things were pushed through with almost no debate and bribery was involved in seemingly every step of the process.

Anyone have a rich uncle who can spearhead the effort?

Born & raised in crook county, never knew anything else - but now, wowza, this judge is really for the working people, he recognized revenue thieves and political fuckery and is intent on ending it- This gentleman is certainly a hero to me. xoxoxo to OH Hamilton County Judge Robert Ruehlman <3

Red light and speed cameras overturned in Chicago and Rahm forced to make the captive taxpayers whole by returning to them the money he cut their ass pockets to get?

Hold that thought SCC... We're going to put on a tin of Jiffy-Pop and grab a couple of beers because THAT SHIT is going to be fucking hilarious!

It'll be like watching a purse-snatcher being chased down by a mob and getting a clown royal ass kicking because he targeted ol' Aunt Granny.

Rahm's a degenerate welcher anyway... Nobody but his friends and contributors are seeing any money, let along being made whole on an owed debt.

I can't wait for the hammer to fall on this one. Fox River Grove, Illinois ("Little Moscow") has been making millions with their red light scam system at US-14 and IL-22 citing "safety". If "safety is such a concern, why not simply install two "NO TURN ON RED" signs? Chicago is trying the same scam with their red light scamera system. Safety has nothing to do with it. It's really all about revenue.

Google red light cameras in North Carolina. They have failed the court test over and over, including appeals. I may be wrong, but I think the state supreme court went against it too. This Ohio thing is nothing new, just another state in the house of cards falling. Of course, Chicago will be the last to drop anything that penalizes the public, just like the way the taxpayers were put on the hook for violating gun rights.

Then again I wouldn't buy from someone that didn't have a storefront or shit I could view online. Glad to see that station security is at it's best. Daley opened the door for these type of scams when he made parking tickets a civil offense and not a criminal/traffic court offense. That led to tickets for just about anything and everything they could think of. The trouble is the hearing officers are all city employees and you don't have a chance at the hearing. The speed cameras are even worse. There are no warning signs. If you go slightly over the limit you are going to get tagged and this is just the beginning. Washington DC has speed cameras all over the city.

On an average city block you have spped limit signs parking meter signs, tow zone signs, cta signs, and safe passage signs. Some major street still have old no cruising zone signs from the 90's which are still up. This is not including all the business signs and city street light poles on the block. In drivers Ed you are taught to keep your eyes on the road to watch for traffic and pedestrians. Now a driver must continuously attempt to use their peripheral vision to find the speed camera warnings which are almost invisible with all the other distractions . Not so safe. It's a big set up for failure. How do these politicians get away with this. These are real criminals. Using their elected positions to change or make new laws so they can steal your hard earned money.

I also heard that one of the big wigs that are running the Camera enforcement review people over at Finance is a Cochran family member.

Proper enforcement of laws? Not a week goes by that there isn't posts about judges who refuse to properly enforce the laws and give out sentences according to statute. Speeding is by statute too.

Let's see, there's a "school" camera on Broadway, between Montrose & Wilson. Interesting thing is, the School at Sunnyside & Wilson was one of the schools CLOSED last year! And then there's "park" camera at Kenmore and Irving. WTF! When you check the Park District page, Challenger playlot is listed as 1100 W. Irving Park Rd. However, the actual park is an entire block south of Irving, along a very quiet, narrow, one way (NB) stretch of Kenmore, that only see an uptick in traffic when the Cubs are in town. And another of my favorites is Wrightwood Park, located at Ashland & Wrightwood. The camera set up to zap the SB traffic is just south of Wrightwood. The camera to get the NB traffic entire 2 BLOCKS south of the park!!

Hey Rahm, you can't tell me these are there, "for the children." Fuck you! This cameras are there for one thing, and one thing only…to make money off the working man!!

Contest every ticket on the grounds that it was not you driving the car. If there is no proof of you driving the car, ticket is void...unless you pay it which constitutes admission of guilt.

Why did Garrido sue the 7-11 store franchise years ago? Inquiring minds would like to know.

1/26/2014 06:33:00 PM

I don't recall specific details, but I assume it was related to the time he got beat to a pulp at 7-11. I do know he is one who will always find a way to file a lawsuit if it will make him some free money.

Let us hope not. Speed and red light cameras are a valuable tool of government. Not only do they raise needed revenue, but they are also an effective way to fight traffic crime and maintain law and order.

-------------

He got severely beaten and shot at while taking police action at the 7-11 at Belmont and Austin while attempting to assist them off duty in the mid 1990's.

The offenders were charged with attempted murder of a police officer.

He was probably trying to get a settlement for some civil action angle in the case against 7-11.

1/26/2014 11:59:00 PM

Sunnyside and Wilson run the same direction, east and west.

For the person who dislikes John Garrido's posts, stop reading them or like someone else said, unfriend him. He does put information on his posts regarding the pension and this job. I've worked for John in another district. You must be a miserable human being if you don't like him because as far as bosses go, he's a good one. If you hate him that much, tell him to his face or post it on his Facebook page.

OT- SCC is there anyway we could have an open post in regards to the upcoming FOP election. We have had all these people come into roll call and give us the "talk" on why we should vote for them. I would like to hear what others have to say.

1/26/2014 12:14:00 AM
Good idea, have heard from clean slate personally not at all impressed the top guy is a "nice guy" but had no answers about contract and pension issues facing us, sorry not time for another " mike shields starter kit" as many of us are nearing retirement we need a proven person and proven team, clean slate yep ok some of those guys have a history of jamming up other coppers as things move forward the "sunshine" on many will be revealed. I talked to 1 person running on another slate and he told me he could not understand why he gets so many questions and feels he is being "picked on" what kind of people are running? Little school girls?

It's supposed to be an open post not more propaganda from the city wide team. I don't have a dog in this fight but enough already. I wish I had the kind of free time your team has to constantly post here. I guess that's because none of you have worked a beat car for 15 years. Let's talk about issues, not more mudslinging and fingerprinting.

If it was that easy, why wouldn't everyone do it. You are not the first person to think of this. Cant believe the city would install all those cameras without first knowing if fining the owner is constutional or if a law covers it. Think of this as you sit and wait for your turn, the guy before you says I wasn't driving and the case is dismissed. What would you say? I wasnt driving and the case is dismissed. Everyone goes home and tells family and friends how easy it is to beat a red light ticket. Has that happened. No and I wonder why

1/26/2014 06:42:00 AM

And most of the cars cut thru the private drive right next to the light, FRG cops never have figured this out....

I got a speed warning notice in the mail that told me where I was, date and time, and ticket # however, never said the speed I was going. Letter told me because it was my 1 st violation I didn't have to pay a fine but I would for any future violations. Hmmmm... Seems to me with no mention of drivers speed they could be sending out bullshit warnings. Also, there was no recording or framed still pic of me violating anything on website. Anyone else have this happen to them?

All of the suburban villages that have red light camera are pushing
the villages to up the conviction rate. Remember all of them are reviewed by a PO. Why not Chicago?

1/26/2014 06:56:00 PM

Many companies review their own film as part of the contract - no leo has a say in it.
Has Chicago ever stated who is doing the 'reviewing'?

1/26/2014 10:23:00 PM

10:23 Law was changed, companies do not view the videos, All must be viewed by a PO of the department issuing and it is his decision if a ticket is issued.

McDonough did our roll call this morning. I did not know him but I liked what I heard. He is the anti-Mike Shields, he does not have an ego. We need a guy who has priorities straight. As long as coppers are number 1 priority, they will do well. Clean Slate for me and most of people at our roll call.

Hey, come on! Law & Order, you know? Follow the laws and there is no problem. Isn't that what police do, enforce the laws? Isn't that what so many scream about on these pages? Proper enforcement of laws? Not a week goes by that there isn't posts about judges who refuse to properly enforce the laws and give out sentences according to statute. Speeding is by statute too.

1/26/2014 10:17:00 PM
ok stooge. then make sure these corrupt judges and politicians do their job properly first and foremost rather than continue to try and find "clever" ways of extracting more money from taxpayers. there are police assigned to these schools anyway. our bosses can easily tell them to start monitoring traffic outside school zones. i noticed these speed cameras aren't around schools and parks on the side streets, hmm. instead they put the cameras on the busy streets because they know it increases the odds of catching a speeder/out-of-towner or someone driving in an unfamiliar area. so please stop talking about enforcing any and all statutes. why aren't you complaining of these judges not enforcing the violent crimes of criminals who continue to be let back out on the streets to have rap sheets that entail 30+ arrests and aren't even 30 years old yet.

Don't bet on it happening here. The rumors are growing of the move by the democrats to impose either a city of Chicago or a county of cook income tax of 1%. It probably is going to happen. They also want a progressive state income tax claiming that this is the only fair way for the rich to pay their share. However, it would increase taxes for most of the working people in this state and impose a state income tax on pensions and social security. For a state that claims it is broke Quinn signed a budget that increases state spending by 2 billion.

I don't have a rap sheet, just years on this job. I can't control what the idiot judges do.

Go 30 miles an hour or 20 in a school zone and you will never get a speeding ticket in the mail. That I can control.
