- A national newspaper chain with nearly 100 publications and 1.6 million readers is considering building “state-by-state databases” on concealed weapons permit holders, according to an internal e-mail.
The plan, laid out in an email from a top editor at North Carolina-based Civitas Media, could be similar to a controversial project a New York state newspaper carried out in 2012 which included an online map that identified gun owners in two counties by name and address. Civitas' database project was detailed in a Jan. 19 e-mail to newsrooms across the chain, which has papers in 11 states, including Ohio, Illinois and Pennsylvania.
The newest project "examines the explosion of ‘conceal and carry’ gun permits across the U.S.,” wrote Jim Lawitz, Civitas’ director of content, in an e-mail first obtained by the Buckeye Firearms Association. “Through public records act requests, we will attempt to build state-by-state databases that list those who have the right to carry a concealed weapon.”
And once again, it is pointed out hat this "database" will most likely end up listing police officers (active and retired), victims of domestic violence who own a gun in case the psycho ex turns up on their doorstep, along with any person who knows that the police can't be everywhere and accept responsibility for their own protection.

Many states consider the identity database of their CCP holders to be confidential information available only to law enforcement and a court.
Anybody see the success Scott Walker is having in Wisconsin?

Civitas Media never had any plans or intentions of publishing in print or online lists of holders of “conceal and carry” permits. Nor will Civitas Media develop databases of permit holders. A poorly crafted internal memo meant to highlight editorial discussions and planning incorrectly indicated that such a database was being planned; it has been considered and rejected.

But Civitas President and CEO Michael Bush, in an email after FoxNews.com reported the story on Friday, stated that the memo should not have been sent and that the notion of such a project had been "rejected" upon consideration.

Both the FOID csrd list and the Carry permit list are protected from the Press and FOIA.
I know the CEO published a statement, but it looks to be only after the fact they got their hand caught on the cookie jar.

1. The fed background check only demonstrates that a person sought approval to purchase a weapon from a gun shop. It is not proof of ownership unto itself.
2. There is no such thing as a gun "black market" private sales are legal in most states, the exception being shitholes like Illinois.
Why did the passing and implementation of. HR218 carry conceal for retired law enforcement go so smooth and be so successful since being implemented some 7 yrs ago? A few simply understood rules a name check and qualification and a good program. It's all about the 2nd Amendment so the let the Feds pass one law for all. 50. States like HR 218 only for non retired law enforcement. One standard for everyone everywhere and no. I put from The wimpy do gooders Quinn and Rahm.

I wish there were more cops like you. Sadly, I can't take pro-second amendment cops too seriously. Why? Because if the government did impose a ban on guns, the majority of cops would be more than happy to confiscate guns from law abiding citizens.

We would lose our jobs if we accessed that information in the way you suggest. A better way of doing it (and YOU can do this) is to search it on the net. There are free sites and pay-as-you-go sites. Have a good time.
The new IL concealed carry law forbids release of permit holder information in response to FOIA requests. That was in addition to the FOID card holder info that is also forbidden to be released. You might remember Lisa Madigan tried to force the ISP to release FOID holder info a few years ago. The ISP refused.
The leftist media can print whatever the fuck they want but they need to remember such a list creates very real dangers for those on it. Don't be surprised if people with reasonable fears pre-empt some of them and come knocking on the doors of their ivory towers. Post the names and addresses of all involved.

That's what he is saying now. Bet that was not the original plan. Got too much negative press when it leaked out, so he sank the idea.
Sooner or later the LameStream Media will have to realize the Concealed Carry is here to stay. There are some who oppose it vigorously and some who support it likewise. The vast majority of the public has moved on as it has not been the disaster that was predicted for it.
